If we gather together only to move through the actions a church is “supposed” to do, without the presence and power of the Spirit with/in us, we have become a sect indeed. Static. Inconsequential. But if we come together ready to hear the voice of Jesus, open to be changed within – transformed, renewed, transformING, renewING,– then we are empowered to BE transformative, a conduit for the reformation of a nation. We are meant to live by a different kind of power. We are already made for, and have access to, the Source of this other power! Do we look like a church that is composed of a people who are empowered by the Spirit of God? When someone sees his donation as a responsibility (v. gift) – sharing, because it is her duty, something that ought to be done – it’s much more difficult to ignore. When we take a moment to breathe in the truth of our privilege and breathe out the impulse to protect it, we are compelled to do something about it. When I breathe in the realization that ‘what became of my life is as much a factor of the inequities that exist in our society today’ as anything else, and breathe out my part in perpetuating a perception that it’s somehow their fault for not trying hard enough, or similar sentiment, then maybe my gifts – given by the very Spirit of God – might contribute to the project of making things right, the transformation of the world! Jesus says in Matthew, If you have lost your saltiness, your flavor, what good are you‽ Maintain your unique flavor, and notice and appreciate the unique flavors of others. Expand your perspective of what delicious is, enjoy the infinite gifts and evidence of God’s goodness in this world. Let Holy Love be the end of us, even the end of Methodism. Be a light, evidence of your devotion to God. You are a light. Let it shine! Paul addresses the Corinthian church in 1:1-9 as the “Church of God” and reminds them they are sanctified already – called to be saints! Not only that, they are called to be saints together with all, in every place! Grace to you and peace from God… Then he reminds them of some truths of what this actually means: the grace of God is given them – they possess God’s grace. And it is by this grace (profound, unimaginable, more than anyone might even consider needing) by this grace, they are enriched in every way: in speech and in knowledge of every kind! Already – because the graces have already been poured out. And the testimony of Jesus – that others witness those graces among them – reveals an even more remarkable truth: they are not lacking in any. spiritual. gift. They are enough. You are enough. You already contain and are strengthened by the graces of Jesus – will continue to be to the end. And this calling means you are called into the fellowship of Jesus. Together. With all. In every place. Martin Luther King, Jr. taught, “For systemic and personal transformation to occur, there must be “an honest confrontation with [the truth] and a willing search for the truth and a willingness to admit the truth when we discover it.” Consider. Notice. Invite the Spirit of God to expose you to truths – or, at least, an openness to be willing to admit the truths of our prejudices and apathy and fear. To uproot guilt and plant forgiveness with us. Tear out arrogance and seed humility. Sprout hope and sow resilience. Listen. Reflect. Be transformed. (ala, Maya Angelou) Because, we are called to be saints together with all, in every place! And we are enriched in every way: in speech and in knowledge of every kind! And we are not lacking in any. spiritual. gift. All are chosen by God. All are created in God’s image – through Christ, our Redeemer, sustained by the Spirit. All are enough. Just, Enough. The fullness of God the Creator – of everything! was pleased to have all of God’s own being (fullness) dwell in this itty bitty of a baby whose birth we claim to Celebrate on December 25th. Still, “without justice and love, peace is an illusion.” #DomHelderCamara The project of God’s justice – making all things right, reconciling us to God and each other, AND all creation (whether things on earth or things in heaven) – this project of God’s justice is fueled, empowered, made personal, purely by Love: by making peace through Christ’s blood, shed on the cross. Then, God’s presence will be known, the people will consult God - and pay attention, and an industry of war will no longer be necessary: indiscriminately, across the board, the only commerce will be the facilitation of peace. Put on the armor of light – walk in the light of Jesus. Live with honor. What does that look like to live honorably? For one, it means living honestly – let your actions live out what you believe. What is it that you believe? We believe in Jesus Christ – the messiah, anointed Present. So if you say that you believe in Jesus Christ, to live honorably is to act on that, to live it. Awake! remember your baptism and, together, let us center on Jesus who dwells in me and in you – take time allowing the spirit of Jesus (in whom God is pleased to dwell) to speak; confess our frenzy and anxiety at the onset of Advent. Awaken, and remember. Together we are members of peace. Know peace; be an instrument of peace. “True religion is real living; living with all one’s soul, with all one’s goodness and righteousness.” - Albert Einstein Jesus asks his disciples, Who do you say that I am? Whom do you seek? For in this Jesus Christ all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. God indwells Christ, abides with, and Jesus is God’s abode, dwelling place. And through Jesus, God reconciles to God All Things – making peace between us. And so dwells in us. In me. Jesus is God’s abode, and Jesus dwells in me – So this same Spirit, of the Anointed One, the Christ, makes an abode in me. In you. For whom do I create? Well, for everyone who listens to what comes from my mouth and views the art I’ve crafted. Ultimately, though, I know I do all of this because I believe in Jesus Christ, and the project of Kingdom building – a kin-dom of all creation, perfecting, becoming… Opening hearts, opening minds, opening doors. So why would I ever give potentate status to anyone other than Jesus? What convinces us that others’ opinions or disposition toward us should have unlimited power or influence over us? To say, “I believe in Jesus Christ,” ought to indicate that my life would display something of that belief. Christ, the Messiah, Redeemer – Anointed – is present, now. I believe this reality because I experience that nearness, the truth of Jesus’ voice and strength and love. And because if I don’t? where else can I go? everything about who am I will eventually fall apart.   What does it mean, might it look like, that we live our belief together? Maybe it means not looking to other “successful” churches to find answers to our problem of dwindling numbers, but look to the Presence, the Jesus Christ we claim to believe in, praying together for God’s leading, praying that we can be the light of Jesus in this world. Perhaps if we pray like we had nowhere else to go, we might even pray ourselves into truly believing it. God promised to abide with us. God created us for that purpose. We are made to be the dwelling place of God. All creation – the universe, the earth and everything it contains – was made to be the dwelling place for God. But if we are being poor stewards of our relationships with one another and with the earth, it only follows that all of God’s goodness will be diverted from those spaces. The result is the destruction of our environment – now felt acutely by our farmers, and only worsening. And it is evident in our relationships – the inability (or difficulty in) finding unity, to see the divine in one another. God said, "I am about to create new heavens and a new earth..." And we are a part of that re-creation. Equity and equality will occur because all will work together for the good of the community – not to exploit the weak or take advantage of the generous. To be lovestruck with each other (MLK) we notice first what we love – then any difference is secondary, a point of uniqueness and possibility for growth. And if we are lovestruck with our environment – with awe and wonder – then it will matter how we use our resources. It is creative. It is collaborative. It is for the dreamers. “Sometimes, the only realists are the dreamers.” (Paul Wellstone). So not grow weary in doing what is right. God’s holy mountain – the new heavens and the new earth – where God’s presence abides. The presence, God’s glory, that is evident in the making-right of all things – this intentional activity to dwell in God’s glory: this universe, this world, an intentional abode. We are interconnected. We are accountable to God – together. Which means, we are accountable to each other, too. The whole earth is full of God’s glory. This holy God fills the land with plenty of what we need – exactly enough. But we are accountable to one another for its care. Men and women put their lives on the line, and have given their lives for the protection of this land. Your land. My land. But it is rebelling against us because of the disregard we’ve given it. Perhaps, as we remember and honor the veterans who have and who are even now in service to the protection of our freedoms in this land... consider what our responsibility is to the land – this land that was made for you and me. And we might see the reality, God’s glory, the reality of God’s presence even here, and see more clearly that material things “only collect rust or dust, and once we know that the only thing that counts is treasure in heaven, surely we [will] find a new way to live!” (continue to read/view, link in bio) . . . #veteransday #thislandisourland #godisenough #paceofgrace #sanctification #reconcile #covenant #instrumentofpeace #womenclergy #feministpriest #feministpastor #nonbinary #inclusive #lovefirst #communion #paceofgrace #thepaceofgrace #argueitout #bewhoyouare #lovewashismeaning #reconciliation https://www.instagram.com/p/B4sxEEJgLBx/?igshid=1a4nyu4z8oe0q

The result of living out of a mythology of self and without grace, the grace of dignity – the truth of who I am, who you are, as uniquely imaging God – the result of living for the myth and not living in the grace of knowing my true worth … is shame. If each of us understands of what our relationship with God consists, If each of us let go of the mask that we made identity – cobbled together as a façade - our entire sense of worth is no longer in question; and there is no longer shame. But we have to have faith. Believe that the end is present because God is timeless, and God is near. In fact, God is among us. And we are not alone. “Everything in God’s universe is present-tense. Divine love transcends time and place.” In the Eucharist, taking communion, we remember. Today we remember – remembering the saints, in communion. And together dwell in this Cosmic Abode of the communion of saints. #vinitawright #communion #grace #allsaintsday #communionofsaints #paceofgrace #sanctification #reconcile #covenant #instrumentofpeace #womenclergy #feministpriest #feministpastor #nonbinary #inclusive #lovefirst #communion #paceofgrace #thepaceofgrace #argueitout #bewhoyouare #lovewashismeaning #reconciliation Fredric and Jane (Jennie) Whipp https://www.instagram.com/p/B4bgaxtAF9h/?igshid=1qnfb2ghuob5

We are accountable to each other. God created us to be in community and to be unified – one with God and one with each other. Not identical, not doing ministry in the same way, but at one with who God made us to be and live out of that strength, leading and moving with dignity: knowing our worth, knowing the worth of those who lead and move and live beside us, with us. Each of us is more precious than the costliest of stones. Our identity in the dignity of our worth as uniquely, creatively created in the very image of God. And we ARE accountable to one another to be involved in one another’s life, this transformation, empowered by the grace that supports and nourishes the sanctifying reality of God-With-Us, in us, among us. Transformation in the spiritual life is experiential and perpetual. It is a verb. An occurrence, and ongoing. It is not a one-and-done this side of glory. But it asks that we die to our hold on anything that we are making god to us – our things, our money, position, homes, pensions, even our generosity can become a god… “As long as you do not have experience of this dying and becoming, you are only a troubled guest on this dark earth.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe #reimaginecommunity [to read/view more, link in bio] ~ ~ ~ #transformation #grace #discipleship #paceofgrace #bejust #listen #sanctification #reconcile #covenant #instrumentofpeace #womenclergy #feministpriest #feministpastor #nonbinary #inclusive #lovefirst #communion #paceofgrace #thepaceofgrace #argueitout #bewhoyouare #lovewashismeaning #reconciliation https://www.instagram.com/p/B4IpVlhgTOo/?igshid=ww7ip874e9qz

Sometimes faith is believing that you are enough, that I am enough – believing that God’s love is the only true standard – and that if I fall short in loving others (or even myself), God’s love has covered even that. Because, you know, grace. Faith gives us the courage to be vulnerable. God promised that this new covenant will mean that every bit of who God is and God’s intention for creation will already be writ large on their hearts. This hope is timeless. As it was for the Israelites, so it is for us. Faith is what got them through it all, and it is faith that moves us now. We can be fewer in number, decreasing in mobility and endurance - and permeate the community, disciple with nothing but who we are. And that is enough. Because God alone, is enough. It requires a fair amount of faith to live in unity, with a bond of peace. We must believe there is “one body and one Spirit, … called to the one hope … one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.” It is communion; it is the disciple’s communion. It is active faith – not unthinking, holding to some literalism that creates a fissure between us – but genuine, ‘working out our faith’ (Phil2:12) working hard at it, with even a bit of fear and trembling. For this kind of faith we must be gentle with each other and with ourselves, patient, bearing with each other in Love. Because those who love are born of God and know God. Those who don’t love – and it is easy to love those who love you, but Jesus says, “love your enemies too!” (Lk6:35) those who don’t love, don’t know God. Period. Because God. Is. Love. The Japanese concept of ma – the sound of silence – is the silence that can be found between sounds. It is being present to the moment, attentive to the noises and sounds – and finding a sense of well-being, even joy, within it. It is only enjoyed, however, when there is true listening. Only when we pay attention to what we hear can we also detect the substance that is in the in between. Crucially, if I’m not listening and noticing those spaces, hearing into the nuance, the life contained with them, I “may indeed look, but not perceive,    and may indeed listen, but not understand; . . . [and fail to] turn again and be forgiven.” Mk4:12. I may not turn to you and be reconciled, or truly understand from where you are coming . . . and alienate you.   “The [Apostle’s] Creed is not a call to believe in the Church. When I look, actually see – because I’m not paying attention to you if I’m trying to say everything I want to make you understand – when I see you, I notice more about your expression, sense your presence. And it is powerful. This is what Jesus did. He went to the people – the outcasts, the immigrant, ones that made other people uncomfortable – Jesus went to the people and listened. He noticed the sick and healed them, he recognized the foreigner and offered acceptance, belonging. #Twinning “Instruments of Reconciliation” I wonder if the idea of changing our perspective on a matter – which we previously considered sinful (surely they’re going to hell for this) we might feel something like the sibling to the prodigal son. The sin of the prodigal son was not that he spent all his money. That he drank too much or ate more than he needed. It wasn’t even that he had sex with multiple women. The sin of the prodigal son was that he thought he didn’t need anyone else – or that anyone else counted on him. The prodigal son thought that all he needed was a bunch of money and to find all the ways he could be entertained, feel “good,” to live a full life. What God calls sin has nothing to do with whatever thing a person does, and everything to do with being in right relationship with one another and God, the dutiful son – doing all the “right” things – became indignant. When the dutiful son forgets that it has nothing to do with the things we do, per se, he becomes just as much the “sinner” as his brother. Not until he recognizes why he stays, what actually does belong to him – belonging itself, for one, and all the rights of an heir – then he too is reconciled with the father. When we let go of what we call “sin” – it isn’t our duty to do so, of course – instead of becoming indignant at the thought that, wow, women who wear men’s clothing are not actually going to hell, or whatever we took out of context from the Bible and called it sin (weaving wool and linen together, women wearing braids or jewelry, etc.) – moving past the thought: well, I never did those things, I worked so hard not to do them, but now I have to believe it is actually ok? As soon as we move beyond that, and really search scripture for God’s heart on the matter, it is possible to see God working in/through that other person. Love God with everything, and love everyone else. “No other commandment is greater than these.” (To cont read/watch, link in bio) . . . #bejust #listen #sacrament #reconcile #covenant #instrumentofpeace #lovefirst #womenclergy #feministpriest #feministpastor #nonbinary #inclusive #lovefirst #lovewashismeaning #thepaceofgrace #argueitout #organon #deracinate https://www.instagram.com/p/B2egpcNgsqS/?igshid=1shiycka2j8x

Reconciliation is not just agreeing to disagree. Reconciliation that argues it out (Is1.18) and settles the matter of how to move forward together, that is based on a covenant with one another, that is obtained by communing together – this reconciliation is active (Col1.20). We choose to listen into one another’s perspectives without assumptions. If I say to you, “you are wrong about your notion of God’s heart on a matter” (implying you aren’t really seeking God) I am “liable to the hell of fire” (So says Jesus in Matt 5:22). But if I am hearing God, and you are hearing God, and we listen for God’s voice, God’s Word  . . . the Word that God is watching over to perform  . . . in each other, perhaps we might overlay <https://durandumc.org/2019/07/accepting-love/> the x-ray and the gamma ray and the ultraviolet and infrared – and see a little more clearly into the vastness, the universe, the incomprehensible God of the universe – who also wants to be known by us! Communion is a sacred, holy space-time because we recognize God's presence in it – God is known in this act, in our coming together. The sacrament of communion is an enactment, a remembering what Jesus did so we are reconciled to God. And it happens in community, our communing together, enacting, remembering that we are continuously reconciling with one another in our relationships. – and here is where the living water does not flow through the cracks (Jer2.13): our community is the cup with which we offer this living water to all who have need of it. ALL who have need.
