Who is more likely to commit crime?

In Britain and USA, it has been proved that some groups are more involved in crime than others. Even though crimes can be committed by anyone conversely according to official data, male, the working class, the young and some ethnic minority are more likely to commit crimes than the middle class, the elderly, femalesand whites. There are many reasons as to why these evident groups seem to take part in crime more than others.

In regard to gender, males commit more crime than female due to the dissimilar upbringing they have to females, from a young age male are raised to be strong and hard thus being this way takes out their emotions and their soft spot which then allows them to have a superior part in committing crimes. Females tend to be more controlled and supervised on the other hand males are more tough and violent and they are encouraged to take challenges without fear, these roles are rooted from birth to us. This results in males having more of an opportunity in committing crimes. “Despite greater recognition of gender roles, we continue to raise our boys to be assertive and aggressive, while we raise our girls to be gentle and nurturing” (Lindsey, 2011). Since both genders are socialized differently this results in males becoming more delinquent. Henceforth some men believe that by committing crime it raises their essential feature of maleness, and it makes them feel better to be known as being hard and not afraid of doing what they want. Hence not all men are violent, violence is learnt, and some men manage to learn it and enhance on it more than others depending on how important it may be for them. Some men find masculinity in carrying out the standards norms of the society however others imagine that by committing crime it can reinforce patriarchal standards.

The national crime statistics state that in 2016/17, a higher percentage of people from the Mixed and Black ethnic groups were victims of crime compared with White people. There are many reasons behind why this certain gender and ethnic group are known to be more offensive than others. These reasons involve a high number of unemployment amongst these categories. An individual who is unemployed or is receiving a low income will definitely need money which the only way they prosome they can receive it is by committing an act of crime. The report had stated that majority of men held responsible by police for gun crimes, robberies and street crimes are black and it also specified that black men are disproportionately the victims of violent crime in the capital. These percentages are very high for one particular ethnic group and yet these figures do not consider that any one criminal may have committed several offences. Since the employment rate for the black ethnic group is low, they would want to get some sort of status and they chose to earn this through criminal offences these are the means men with low status use to exploit out their masculinity when they lack power in mainstream society.

Some men believe that by committing crimes they are showing their masculine powers and they believes that by showing that you are a strong man it enables you to commit offenses. The most dominant form of masculinity is known as hegemonic masculinity. ‘Normative masculinity’ is the socially accepted ideal of what a ‘real man’ is. This comprises being successful in terms of money and sexual defeats, being in control/exercising power. It has also been argued that the main reason behind high levels of male crime are simply down to men trying to prove they are ‘real men’. They believe they earn some kind of position, status and competition. Some men do it for competition to beat other that are trying to prove their toughness by offending.
