‘Soldier’s Christmas’ — Italian Christmas poster from the Second World War (December 1944) showing Jesus holding a parchment reading ‘You will give your arm to the country, you will give your thoughts to God’. The illustration is based off Titian’s painting ‘Cristo della moneta’ (or ‘The Tribute Money’), which depicts the “Render unto Caesar” episode in the Bible, with a man handing a Roman coin to Jesus as he asks whether it is right to pay tax to Caesar. The poster was also published as a Christmas card for soldiers fighting for what was then the Italian Social Republic. The ‘XXIII’ at the bottom right means “23rd year of the Fascist Era”, referring to the calendar era established in Italy in 1926 to mark the period from the March of Rome onwards.
