idiots in love to the nth degree, lots of internal angst, robin and barb are gay and we're all here for it -you're going to see a lot more from them soon, trust-, affectionate touching / petnames, mentions of alcohol/smoking/w**d, swearing, eventual filth, reader suffers from gifted kid burnout but is.. also a workaholic apparently, mentions of the annoying and oh so judgmental small town mindset, internalized confusion / fear due to sexual pref -being gay in the 80's isn't fun and when I write Barb and Robin in a more romantic way, this will be reflected, marital conflicts ( tommy and carol , other 'couples' mentioned ) and tons of other stuff..
reader/you are a female with female parts. you/reader are the oldest Byers. you/reader have a very specific personality / clothing style and/or nicknames and petnames. this is yet another self indulgent thing and i'm not sorry at all.

"Hey guys, give me a second." you stop outside the record store and turn to look back at Barb and Robin. They share a look and burst out laughing. You pout, flip them off and wander into the store. Eddie is rearranging a clearance bin with his headphones in, as you approach him you can hear Metallica playing faintly.
You tap his shoulder and he jumps, whirling around with a glare in doe eyes that seems to soften as soon as he realizes it's you. He chuckles, eyes roaming slowly as he takes in the heels, the stockings, the way your skirt fits just a little too well… all of it.
"Hot date, right?" He's only half teasing, trying to fight off a surge of jealousy at the thought. You laugh and shrug. "Job interview count, Eddie?"
"Another one? Jesus H.Christ, woman, do you ever sleep?" he's laughing but he's looking at you in concern. You shrug. "It's a legal secretary gig.. for Albright? Here in town?"
Eddie chuckles. "Figured you'd go back to Boston."
"There's nothing there for me. I uh..got homesick." you admit and he'll die before admitting it but he's glad you're not leaving, even if he never acts on the way he feels because he knows it'll never happen.
"According t' my mom this one is gonna pay. Like.. big time. Yeah, Albright got several big cases back to back and she's swamped with paperwork but she has zero time." You give an evil laugh, "means I get to do a lot of organization."
Eddie snorts because he can't help it, the fact that you're giddy about organizing a ton of files which is completely his opposite, should be more than enough further proof that you and him won't ever work.
He pouts a little. "Aw, this mean I won't see you at my gigs?"
"No? Why would I stop coming? Angel really needs the help." You're laughing and stepping closer, Eddie steps closer to you too, a hand just barely grazes your hip and you can feel the way your breath catches over just a simple accidental touch. "Besides," you add, tilting your head slightly to look up at him, " Maybe I enjoy the scenery."
Eddie rubs his chin. A smile that spreads lazily across his lips and draws your gaze down to them. "The scenery, huh?"
"Mhm." you've got a hand against the front of his Hellfire shirt and the scent of him surrounds you, it taunts you and ultimately, before you can stop yourself, you've stepped closer. Much closer.
Robin is laughing and Barb is tapping her wrist. You use your grip on the front of his shirt to pull yourself up closer and you give his hair a little fluff. And you're biting your lip again and he fixated, breath hanging in his throat. You laugh softly as soon as you remember the envelope your little brother Will gave to you to give to him and you find it, pressing it into his hand.
"What's this?"
"All I know is that Will wanted me to give it to you."
"Ooh. It looks fancy."
You laugh softly, hand catching in wild and thick locks, "My little brother doesn't do anything half-assed." and after a few seconds, you pout. "I need to get going. I'll see you tonight?"
Eddie chuckles as he smiles and nods. "You know where I'll be."
As you walk out, Eddie has to lean against a wall and take several deep breaths to pull himself together. And he fans himself, chuckling quietly. "Go get 'em, sweetheart."
Nearby, Gareth Emerson bursts into laughter. "Holy shit.. is this Eddie Munson speechless for once?"
Eddie flips him off as his cheeks darken. "Shut up, Emerson."
"Not gonna happen. I still say you're wrong this time and she wants you. The tension just now, dude" he fans himself and laughs again, "enough to smother anyone else present."
"Look.. I'm not saying I don't want her. I am saying she's 'grown', Emerson. She's got her shit together. In what world is a girl like that ever gonna settle or be happy with a guy like me, huh?"
"Ya never know, Munson."
–
The heels are killing your feet. You're excited because you just landed the job and while it isn't being a lawyer, it is still adjacent to the field you chose so long ago.
You're still on the high from it when you happen to catch sight of Eddie's new motorcycle parked outside of the laundromat across the street. Your mom realizes you haven't heard a thing she's asked so she follows your gaze and smiles to herself as soon as she picks up on the way your eyes linger and roam over the tall boy.
"Airhead!"
"___, are you okay?"
You zone back in right around the time your brother Jonathan throws a piece of French fry at your nose. And naturally, he's teasing you, he's quick to tell your mom that things between you and Eddie are "intense", to quote him directly.
"Are not!"
"I dunno, it looks pretty intense to me." your mom is teasing you and you pout. "I like him. He seems sweet, I mean from what I've seen when I see him around town."
You laugh softly and nod, agreeing. "He's different than the other jerks."
"She admitted it!" Will and Jane laugh when they say it the whole time.
Once they're gone to the arcade to meet their friends and Jonathan's left to meet Nance, this leaves you alone with your mom.
"Hey mom?"
"Yeah, sweetie?"
"Like.. do you think it's possible to look at a person and just know theyre.. nevermind. This is crazy. Insane."
"No, tell me. I'm your mom. You can talk to me about anything."
"Do you think it's possible that you can look at a person and you know you're going to love them?"
"Yeah. I did.. with Hopper. And I almost let my own fear mess it up, more than once.. don't make my mistake, sweetie."
"I'm scared."
"Yeah, I know that feeling. Just go with it..whatever it is you're feeling, I mean."
You nod. Laugh softly. "Easier said than done."
Your mom laughs and nods. "I know what you mean."
There are even more people at the show tonight and Eddie is thrilled. He's also nervous as hell.
You make your way into the bar and as you're hopping over to hurry and start mixing drinks, you lock eyes. You give him a thumbs up and he gives you that lopsided charmers grin.
"I see what you mean, Gareth. Dude goes silent when she's around." Jeff chuckles as he says it and Eddie grumbles, flipping his friend the bird. "Fucking do not!"
"You do!"
"Do not!"
As the band begins to warm up, you smile to yourself. "Amazing as always, handsome." you mumble to yourself as you wipe down the bar.
And unbeknownst to you, Wayne happens to be sitting a few seats away. Close enough that he's heard you. He chuckles to himself.
Both of you are so clueless it's not funny.
The show has just ended. Eddie is loading his setup into the back of Jeff's dad's truck when Wayne surprises him by wandering out into the back.
"Hell of a show tonight, kid."
Eddie laughs. "You saw it?"
Wayne shrugs. "Sometimes I come to watch." and he drags a hand over his head, smirks at his nephew, "I wasn't the only one watching."
"Oh you weren't, huh?"
Wayne catches sight of you walking out with some of the other girls, you're sandwiched between the two girls laughing and talking. Wayne catches sight of the way Eddie is staring and he speaks up. "She was watching too, kid."
"Yeah, she kinda had to. She tends bar, man."
"She clocked out at 10, kid. Angel only needs her from 7 t' 9."
Eddie gapes. Then he laughs. "She probably stayed to talk to the other girls."
Wayne shrugs. "I dunno about that kid."
"Trust me. That's all it is, it has t'be."
You've spotted Eddie in the alley out back of the bar. You tell Tanya and Sheila goodbye and you turn back, slipping up behind him. "Boo." You're laughing as he turns around, a mocked 'scared' look on his face as you shrug.
"Always trying to scare me, woman." Eddie shakes his head. You laugh softly. Step up into him and toy with the front of his denim vest as you stare up at him. His eyes catch on the purple streak of hair and before he can stop himself, he's reached out for it, passing it through his fingers as he chuckles quietly. "Whens that..uh, the secretary gig start?"
"Tomorrow. I'm kinda torn between nervous and excited."
And he doesn't say it but he's excited too. Because until today, he'd been assuming you were only back for the summer. That when fall came around, you'd be leaving for Boston again. Now that he knows you're not, if he were more optimistic, he'd make a move.
He's tempted to go for it, the only thing that stops him is you're not the kind of girl who is just gonna settle for him, you've got all this stuff ahead of you and he knows this and refuses to get in the way of it.
He's excited also because he can look at you and tell that this job is something you really want.
And he's happy for you. Proud of you because you seem fearless and nothing seems to stop you from going after what you want. If he didn't love that about you it might actually make him a little jealous.
"Don't overdo it, alright? Even Supergirl needs rest, doll."
"I'll keep that in mind, Eddie. I'll see you later. I need to get home. You were amazing up there tonight, as always." you give his hair one last little fluff until the next time you see him and reluctantly, you step away, walking over to your moms car.
Your mom is right.. and it's getting to a point where you can't fight the direction you're being pulled. The problem is…what should your next move be?

“Wait..”
“Yeah?” Eddie pauses and glances over at Gareth as he slips the black t-shirt over his head. “What?”
“She asked you first, man.” Gareth chuckles and  shakes his head. “And you’re still telling me she’s not into you.. Like, at all.” he rubs a hand over his face. He loves his friend dearly, but sometimes the guy is impossibly stubborn. Like right now, when Eddie looks him straight in the face and shrugs. “That’s exactly what I’m saying. She’s my friend.I’m telling you, she just sees me as another friend. That has to be it.”
Gareth grumbles. “You’re so oblivious it fuckin hurts. It physically pains me, man.”
Eddie turns to him. “This look alright, dude?”
“Yeah. But that’s your good shirt.”
Eddie shrugs. Balks at Gareth’s eagle eyes picking right up on the fact that he’s wearing one of his better shirts as he retorts lamely, “It’s not a date. Maybe I just wanted t’ look nice.”
“I’m telling you. One of you thinks this is a date and the other doesn’t.”
“Okay, fine, since you’re the ‘expert’ all of a sudden, man…” Eddie chuckles, and he’s actually attempting to do something with the wayward frizz that forms in his hair after it’s been washed and air drys, “Tell me what a date is.”
Gareth laughs. “Oh trust me. If I’m right and this is a date, which I know it is, you’ll figure it out pretty fast, man.”
“Okay, but like.. How?”
Gareth rubs a hand over his face. Takes a deep breath. He knows Eddie well enough to know by now that Eddie is purposely getting on his nerves. He flips Eddie off and then runs through his own personal checklist.
Eddie listens, he starts to argue several ‘points’ Gareth brings up, but Gareth gives him a silencing look that’s actually pretty intimidating for once. And at some point during the conversation, Wayne gets up and goes to start getting ready for work.
And he takes one look at Eddie and laughs. “Why do you look like a long -tailed cat in a room full of rockers right now, kid?”
Gareth smirks. “Because ___ asked him on a date. To the drive in movies.”
“She did not! She just said that there’s this horror movie she wants t’see but all her friends are babies about the stuff.”
Wayne snickers at first. And then the snickering turns into doubled over, side clenching laughter. “Son..” he shakes his head as the laughter dies away. “Nothin, kid, forget it, you’re as stubborn as I am, it’d be like talkin t’ a brick wall.” but he spritzes Eddie with just a little of his cologne anyway, making Eddie scowl and sniff his pits. “I showered, man!”
“Just trust me, kid. I’ve uh.. Been on a few dates in my time.”
“This is not a date! It’s not.”
“What time is this movie, kid?”
“10?”
Gareth and Wayne share a look and both burst into side clutching laughter all over again. “He’s so clueless, man.” Gareth wheezes out. Jeff yells Eddie’s name from the front door. Gareth calls out that they’re back in the back of the  trailer. When he tacks on that Eddie’s getting ready to go out, Jeff smirks to himself. Shakes his head as he comes into view, leaned against the hallway wall. “She asked you, huh?”
“Yeah. To go to a movie that apparently, all her friends are too scared t’ go see. As a friend.”
“Mhm.” Jeff chuckles. Glances at Gareth. “He still wants t’ be stubborn, I see.”
“He’ll be stubborn til he fuckin dies, Jeff.” Gareth answers, making Wayne nod in agreement.
The fifth shirt flies out into the room and settles over the footboard of your bed. And as soon as this happens, Nancy and Barb share a look. Robin laughs softly to herself and reaches out to lower the volume on your radio. “So you asked him on a date?”
“I asked him to go to a movie, Robbie.”
“You asked him to go see that horror movie with you at the drive in, __. A horror movie makes it a date instantly.” Nancy’s teasing you and you lean far enough out of the walk in closet you share with your step-sister Jane to flip her off. “No, it doesn’t. And if I’d asked him on a date, he’d have laughed his ass off and we know it. I just… Eased into this.”
“Oh.”
“Since you’re easing into things, ___.” Robin’s pushing it just a little, “Maybe when the body count starts to rise, you can ease into diving into his lap.”
“And then you can ease into kissing him senseless. So you don’t have to see the scary parts.”
Nancy and Robin high five and Barb is doubled over laughing. “Just wear the little leopard print dress.. The tank top one?”
You lean out of the closet and raise a brow.
Max and Jane wander in.
“Is she still getting ready?” Max asks, barely hiding a laugh.
Jane flings her arms to the growing pile of clothing on your bed. “Obviously. She’s overthinking it.”
Jane walks into the closet and digs around a little. When she finds the slinky little black dress with bell sleeves, she thrusts it’s hanger at you and walks out, flopping onto her bed as Max pours some M&M’s into her hand. Max nudges her. “You found the black one, right?”
Jane nods. Max smiles and gives her friend the thumbs up. You walk out of the closet and stop in front of the mirror on your shared vanity. Biting your lip as you eye the way your wild mess of hair is yet again, refusing to cooperate. “The humidity has me out here looking like someone who stuck their finger in a light socket.”
“It’s not that bad!”
“It’s really not. Maybe with a little spray..” Barb wanders over, stopping behind you at the vanity. You sit down and rummage through the little silver tray that holds hair ties, clips and both you and your sister’s hair brushes until you find a gold barrette.
You finally resort to putting up half your hair with the barrette and you’re trying to actually do something with the curtain bangs you just had to have when you hear his motorcycle pulling into the yard.
“That can’t be him.”
Robin peeks out your bedroom window. “How sure are you about that? Because I’m looking right at him.”
Nancy’s barely hiding a laugh at this point and Jonathan peeks into the bedroom. “Ready t’ go, babe?”
She smiles and nods. Jonathan looks at you and he bursts out laughing.
“What?” you ask, “Is it the hair?”
Your brother just shrugs. You pick up a pillow from your bed and raise it as if you’re going to hit him with it. “It’s not funny, Jon! Tell me what’s funny!”
“You. You said this was just two people seeing a movie. I’m telling you, this is not that, sis.”
“He’s got flowers.” Robin’s wiggling her brows suggestively and she hurries to let the curtain fall back into place before launching herself onto the bed beside Barb. Barb waits until everyone is preoccupied and leans down, feathering a kiss against Robin’s hairline. “We should get going. Their movie starts later. If we get there now, we can get the good seats in the back of the theater.”
“I love the way you think.” Robin mumbles back. Barb clears her throat. “Take a deep breath, __.”
You breathe in and out.
“We’re going to Starcourt. To try getting tickets to the movie we were going to see.” Robin speaks up, fidgeting just a little. You pick up on it and give her a playful wink. She shrugs and then the two of them rush out too.
Max and Jane share a look when they hear Eddie knocking at the door. “We’ll go keep Hopper from trying to waterboard the guy. You..” Max says, “Finish getting ready.”
You go back to attempting to do just a little something with makeup. Which has never really been your strong suit.
And your heart is racing, all fluttery.
You finish slicking on your favorite red lipstick and make your way out into the living room, clearing your throat. Hopper looks from you to Eddie and chuckles. “You’re in luck, Munson. Looks like she’s ready to leave.”
You want to crawl into a hole and die. You shoot Hopper a pout and he chuckles again.
Your mother is walking into the cabin from work just as you’re walking out. And she looks from you to Eddie, giving you a soft and knowing smile. “Where are you two heading?”
“The drive-in.” you answer. Your mom laughs softly. “Have fun, sweetie.”
“I’ll be in later, Mom. I have the key.”
“Okay, good.” Joyce says it before stepping into the house. She lingers in the open door for a few seconds, watching you get onto the back of Eddie Munson’s motorcycle. Hopper wanders up behind her, wrapping his arms around her to pull her back against his chest and rest his chin on her shoulders. “I dunno what t’ think about that, babe.” he mumbles.
“I have a feeling.” Joyce begins, giggling as Hopper nuzzles his nose against her neck, “Oh yeah, babe?” and Joyce sucks in a breath. “Behave, Jim!” to which he pouts. “What’s your feelin?”
“They’re going to end up together, I know it. I’m actually really confident about it.”
“Oh yeah?” Hopper chuckles. “I made pasta, woman. Hope you’re hungry.”
“I’m starving.” Joyce answers, following Jim into the kitchen.
“Oh Christ!” you’re hiding your face in his neck for a fifth time, “A little warning, maybe?” you whine against his skin and he has to shift the way he’s sitting on the seat of his motorcycle. He slips his arms around you and at first, it’s awkward. Because he’s not sure if doing it is okay, he only knows that you’re apparently scared and he doesn’t like that.
“Hey. ‘S just a movie.” he mumbles as he gets you looking up at him. You laugh softly. “I know that.. I just don’t do well with jumpscares.”
“Or blood.” Eddie chuckles as he  says it and you pout at him. “Or blood.” you echo. “We don’t have t’ stay, woman.”
“ Oh no, I’m finishing the movie. I..” you go quiet. You’re starting to  realize that your insistence at choosing this exact movie was mostly due to having an excuse to touch Eddie Munson without getting over the top creative. You laugh at yourself as this sinks in.
,, okay, you think to yourself, i’m falling hard hard. That’s what this is.” and the thought’s got you in a daze so deep you don’t even realize you’re staring at him and you’re staring hard until his brows knit together and he’s chuckling, the sound dying away. The screams on the giant screen in front of where you’re parked in the middle row die away, other sounds do the same.
Your breath is hung in your throat. “Mhm?” Eddie mumbles, gripping your hips to drag you even closer on the seat of his motorcycle. He’s glad you just gave up on watching a few minutes ago, turning away from the screen entirely to lean against him and hide your eyes from the violence and gore of a grisly murder as it occurred on the  screen.
You did not mean to say it when it comes, but it comes out regardless. “I picked this stupid fucking movie to..” your words hang. And you pause, laughing at yourself as you shake your head. You reach down into the tub of popcorn you’ve been sharing and eat a mouthful as you try to decide the best way to continue because you’re just so damn tired of hiding, fighting the way you feel.
“To what, doll? C’mon, say it.” Eddie’s torn between watching the homocidal maniac on screen as he chases down another victim and torn on the way the butter’s formed a glistening film on your pretty lips. And he’s not expecting what you ultimately wind up saying when it comes, so that takes him completely by surprise.
“Okay, you asked for it.” you mutter in a softer tone. You take a deep breath and make yourself stare up at him. Growing increasingly frustrated with yourself because Will’s been telling you all summer that it’s not hard to just say what you feel. Or it shouldn’t be. And so has Jane. Even Jonathan’s told you on more than one occasion that you need to say or do something before you sky rocket to the moon under the pressure.
“Yeah.” he snickers. But his stomach is churning and he’s going back over every single second of the night so far as if he’ll find the one thing he has to have done to make you so tense all of a sudden.
“Fuck it.” you mumble. And you’re closer to him, suddenly, so close that the sweet scent of your favorite perfume oil fills his nose and engulfs him. When your legs settle on top of his thighs and you slip your arms around his neck, he nearly chokes on the handful of popcorn he’s just taken for himself.
The realization comes crashing down on him with the velocity of a speeding car at a cement barricade. Your hand catches in his hair and you’re pulling his mouth down and straight into your own and it’s a split second that’s almost agony for Eddie Munson because he wants your mouth against his right now. He’s never been the best with patience or waiting and if he’d even stopped to think at any point that this was what everyone kept trying to tell him it was, he would’ve already gone for it a thousand times over.
He’s stunned it’s even happening but.. He’s not so stunned that instinct doesn’t kick in. It turns from you pulling his mouth down onto yours to his mouth seeking yours out. “This is happenin, huh?” he mumbles in a husky daze just as kissable lips engulf your own, smearing red lipstick around on your lips just a little.
He chuckles quietly. But the whimper when his tongue slips past your lips goes straight down, straight to his cock.
He raises his hands, one caressing the side of your face as his forehead settles in against your own. The other hand catches in long and thick hair, tangling in it. Tugging at it as if that alone will pull your mouth even deeper.
Your mouth falls open wider and your  tongue is clumsy at first, massaging his tongue. He chuckles quietly, a playful growl swallowed by the kiss when your teeth catch against his plump bottom lip and tug.
The hand on the side of your face drifts down, settles on your ass and fingers dig against black velvet fabric. “Yeah.” you breathe out at last, smiling into the kiss as colored dots line your vision for a minute or two. You come apart to breathe and he keeps his forehead resting against your forehead.
“Do you get it?” you ask with a soft laugh after a few seconds.
“You could explain it again.. Just like you did.” Eddie mutters, dragging his tongue over the outline of your mouth as his hands raise and catch against either side of your face. “Or you could just tell me, sweetheart. No reason t’ be afraid.”
You take a very shaky breath. “I picked this movie so I could be all clingy and touch you as much as I wanted without havin t’ make a clever excuse, Eddie.. Because I..” you laugh at yourself and shake your head, staring down at the way your thighs contrast the black denim covering his lower body. But he’s not going to let you look down.
He tucks ringed fingers beneath your chin, the metal adorning each one is cool against your warm skin and it feels so good that you shiver slightly. “Because you what, doll? C’mon.” he coaxes, laughing because he’s still frantically trying to grasp that just once, he wasn’t totally right about a situation.
“Because I can’t stop? Because I’ve never.. Felt this way about anybody. I..” you’re glaring at the loose corner of the patch on his vest for a second to gather yourself, gather your thoughts and try to calm down because as usual, everything about him is so overwhelming til you can’t think straight.
“Yeah?” the word comes and it’s shaky. Huskier, the perfect mix of gravel and velvet. His heart’s about to beat right out of his chest and he’s never wanted to hear what someone’s trying to say as much as he wants to hear what you’re trying to say.
He’s just hoping against hope that everyone is actually right.
You clutch the front of his black t-shirt. Because it’s tangible and real and right now, touching him is keeping you grounded. “I think I’m in love with you. I’m kind of freaking out right now, actually.” you admit, going quiet.
And he’s floored. Gaping for a second.
“Fuck.” he mumbles it quietly. It’s not a definite and he knows this. But it is something. And he can tell you really are scared and he just knows somehow that you’re not lying when you say it. Same as him. So, he chuckles and he gets you looking up at him, a lazy grin playing at his lips. You’re nose to nose again and as he presses his mouth against yours, he mutters out quietly, “I’m not dreamin right now..”
“No?” you laugh softly. A hand raising to rest against the side of his face. “You.. Uh.. you don’t have to say anything, you don’t even have to feel the same way, I just needed to get it out. I mean that, Eddie.”
He gapes at you for a second. Then he’s laughing, shaking his head. “Here’s the thing.. I do, actually. And it’s been driving me crazy. I should’ve made th’ first move, sweetheart.”
“Eddie.” you laugh as your mouth meets his all over again. “I wanted to.” you argue.
“So did I.” he admits quietly. “I just didn’t think.. This.. was a possibility.”
“So you didn’t know I was flirting..” you laugh as you clutch at the front of his shirt again. He laughs and shakes his head. “Not a clue, doll. On Ozzy.”
“Guess I’ll just have to be more obvious.” you tease quietly and he bites back a growl because you’ve shifted in his lap and rubbed right against him and the warmth when you do it has him straining even harder against black jeans. “I’m fucked.” he mutters quietly. “Aren’t I?”
You bite your lip. Staring at his. And he takes this as an invitation, a chance to make up for astronomically misreading everything the way he has until this point. His hands settle on your sides and he pulls you into him completely so that there’s no space left. One hand slips up your side and tangles in thick hair, tugging your mouth against his own all over again. Greedy, hungry and devouring.
“Yeah.” he laughs against your lips quietly as the kiss breaks, “I am.” he answers his own rhetorical question from seconds before and you’re hot all over, a quiet whimper slipping out because of the way he’s looking at you so deep.
“Is that a bad thing?” you ask, tilting your head just a little. And doe eyes fix on your neck, staring intently. Distracted. He chuckles. “Maybe not.”

warning
idiots in love + Eddie is endearingly oblivious to you/reader's open flirting where he's concerned, sloooow burn., mentions of divorce/marital troubles (Carol + Tommy), Carol being the same mean girl she was in high school, barb and robin hooked up + made things official and some angst about them having to hide it (cos 80s were not the time to be wlw or mlm, it's sad buuut. I'm writing this accurate to the time period so.. there will be internal fear/angst and anger that they can't just be together openly.), sexual tension, lots of little touches, swearing, a confrontation between reader/carol that kind of ends on a vulnerable!carol note?, post season 4 au with absolutely no sci fi driven plot / previous seasons did not happen here either, fyi. Hawkins is just a normal small midwestern town. OH AND.. Eddie might seem OOC to some, this is merely my take on the character.
<- reader/you are a female. reader/you have female parts. reader/you also have a specific style aesthetic ( ie this or this ) and a defined personality + nicknames and/or petnames. reader/you also happens to be Joyce Byer's oldest child, putting reader/you at 21 which is the same age as Eddie here. So.. this is another self indulgent thing and I am.. not sorry or ashamed. if specific readers aren't your thing, dldr ig?

“You askin me out on a date, __?”
You realize what you’ve done and you’re panicking a little. Then you shrug. “Maybe I am.” you’re dragging your fingers over the raised edges of his tattoo and he has to bite back a groan. “It’s just the drive in.” you laugh softly.
“The drive in, huh?”
“Mhm.. there’s a horror movie playing I really wanna see. And my friends are all babies, Eddie. So am I, come t’ think of it.”
“So you want me t’ go.. Protect you, huh?” he’s teasing right back, totally unaware of what his teasing is doing to you, because if he knew how crazy it drove you -or how wet it made you, whenever he teased like this..

" ____ since when do you work for Ms. Albright?" Carol's voice has you looking up from a growing pile of transcripts, depositions and other legal documents.
You roll your eyes and you start off strong ignoring her but then she does the obnoxious throat clearing bit.  "What do you want, Carol?"
Carol swallows hard. "I have a consult. 3 pm?"
"Shit. She's in court right now. All I can tell you is come back in a few minutes, she should be back then..if court doesn't run over." Carol isn't leaving when you tell her this. Your hand settles on your hip. "You don't have t' wait around, y'know. I'll tell her you checked in."
She's still lingering.
You turn your attention to the documents and files littering your desk. You can feel her staring and it's giving flashbacks to the way she always did this right before she decimated your self esteem back in high school. "Say whatever you're thinking. Just get it out and leave, Carol because I am up to my ears in files and phone calls right now."
"You should really thank me."
You scoff at her audacity. "Now why would I do that, huh? I mean, I'd understand if any of the useless shit you did or said actually.. ya know..inspired me. None of this came from your bullying though."
"Are you really sure about that?" Carol asks and you clutch your sides in laughter. "You really are delusional, huh?"
"It's true. You weren't anything before. People didn't see you. Unless they wanted to hurt you or needed amusement in the form of making you cry."
You laugh.
"I was invisible because I chose to be though? Some of  us don't need constant validation. So whatever point you think your making is.. useless. Kinda like you always were."
"Bitch."
"Aw, thank you, buttercup."
Ms. Albright walks in and she's fuming about the outcome of her case. You clear your throat and nod to Carol and she raises a brow. "Did we have an appointment?"
"Carol, ma'am. I'm your 3 pm."
"Uh huh?"
"My mother, she uh..she made my appointment?"
"Oh! Okay, come right this way, sweetheart!"
You sink down in your desk chair and recline your legs against the edge of the desk. You're tempted to eavesdrop but then again, you just don't care enough about Carol enough to bother, so you get back to organizing files and putting them away. By the time 4 pm rolls around, you've lined up your bosses entire next day and you've made it to m with sorting the files.
Carol wanders out of the woman’s office and it looks as if she’s been crying. And normally, you’d have something snarky to say, but she just looks so hurt that for once, you feel really, really bad for her.
She barely meets your gaze as she walks past your desk, but once she’s at the door to the office, she pauses. “Go ahead and laugh. I know you want to. Everybody else is laughing. Everybody but me.”
She turns to lock eyes with you and you do the same, popping a bubble with your gum. “Why would I laugh? Look, I dunno what led to this, but… Even you deserve to try and find your own happiness. Maybe you should do that, Carol.”
Carol gives you a nod and steps out of the office, letting the door close softly behind her. You stretch and stand, tidying up your desk as you wander into Ms. Albright’s office to give her the list of appointments and consultations you took down from her calls for the rest of the week.
“Another one made the same mistake I did.” the woman says it without any prompting or further context and you shrug. She takes the paper from you and reads over it, smiling at you. “I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow.”
You nod and smile, wandering back out into the front of the office to gather your things. And as you walk past the diner, you spot Carol Perkins sitting inside. Nursing a milkshake, with her toddler sitting in a high chair and her 5 month old asleep in a car seat carrier.
“Those poor kids.” you mutter, shaking your head. Remembering when it was your own mother in Carol’s situation. Wondering what the final straw for Carol was because you know exactly what the final straw for your mother was. And just thinking about it all makes you flinch a little. You make your way down, wandering into the office of the newspaper Nancy works at.
“How was your first day working with Albright?”
“It was.. Interesting. I mean, it’s not exactly what I planned, Nance.. But maybe my plan is changing.”
Nancy smiles brightly at you. “That’s great!”
“Carol came in.”
Nancy gapes. “No way.”
“Mhm.”
“Well, my mom did mention that Tommy’s mother told him they were getting divorced soon. I feel bad for them.”
“I feel bad for their kids.” you say it and sigh, shaking your head. “Anyway, let’s think about literally anything else. Did my lug of a brother tell you anything yet?” you ask, giggling when she shakes her head and gives you a confused look. You shrug. “I may or may not know he’s up to something really, really big.”
“Oh he is, huh?”
“Mhm. But I can’t tell you.”
“Damn it, __.. Why do you always insist on doing this? You’ve done this to Barb and I since we were kids.”
“Because I can. It’s fun, watching the two of you try everything under the sun to get it out of me.”
“C’mon. We need to get a move on. Barb and Robin are headed into town now. And I’m starving.”
“So am I. The takeout I ordered at 9 is wearing off.” you admit, making Nancy gape. “You didn’t take a lunch break?”
“I was in the zone, Nance.”
Robin smiles as she feels Barb’s body melt into hers. Barb’s eyes flutter open and she gives Robin a sleepy peck on the freckled bridge of her nose, raising a hand to caress her face. “Last night was..” Barb trails off, she’s searching for the best word to describe what finally happened between the two of them the night before after months of dancing around their feelings. But there’s not a word that even comes close. Robin sighs in content. “Amazing. Mind blowing. Every good thing I’ve ever wanted t’ feel.” she goes quiet, the two a tangle of arms and legs beneath a faded purple sheet as Robin rolls onto her back and pulls Barb so that she’s partially draped on top of her.
But the afterglow is short lived when a car door slams outside, the sound floating in through the crack in Robin’s bedroom window. Barb pries herself apart from Robin to move to the end of the bed and peer out the window. And she’s wide-eyed when she turns back to look at Robin. “It’s your mom!”
“Shit!” Robin can feel her heart speed up and suddenly, she’s wide awake as panic sets in. Barb has slipped out of bed and Robin joins her, the pair gathering flung articles of clothing off of the bed and helping each other get dressed. Unable to keep their hands to themselves, pausing to exchange breathless and needy kisses or rest their forehead against the other one’s forehead. “I hate that we have to hide this.”
“Me too.” Robin breathes out against her lover’s mouth. Barb motions for Robin to turn facing away and she’s just hooking the last clasp in Barb’s bra when they hear Robin’s mother shut the front door to the trailer behind her and call Robin’s name. Barb nods to the open window, heading over to slip out and Robin comes over too, helping  Barb out, Barb lingering in the window to steal another deep kiss and caress Robin’s face. “I’ll go bring the car up and pretend I just got here.”
Robin nods, pouting as Barb pulls away from her and jumps out the window of her bedroom, bolting across the lawn. Robin’s mother is knocking on the door at this point and Robin makes her way over, opening the door.
“Oh good. You’re awake. Didn’t you hear me come in, Robbie? Come help me bring in the groceries.”
Robin smiles, nodding. A pang of guilt at having to lie to her mother again, but for now, it’s what she has to do. She has to come up with a way to spring everything on her mother gently.
As they unload the trunk of Robin’s mom’s car, Barb pulls to a stop behind it in her own car. Robin’s mom glances from the idling car to Robin and she smiles.
Robin is blushing again, it’s something she doesn’t even realize she’s doing. But her mother picks right up on it. She laughs softly. “Look who’s here, Robbie!” she gives a bright grin, waving at the girl currently sitting inside the parked car. Barb kills the engine and gets out just as Robin’s mother takes in a few more bags from the trunk. Robin steps up into her girlfriend -awed by the fact that now, it’s official. Now she can actually call her this, even if for the time being, it’s kept private. Between the two of them.
She gives Barb a little peck on the lips and Barb laughs softly, returning the small peck. She nods to the trunk. “I’ll grab some bags too.”
As Barb grabs bags to help carry them into the trailer, Robin is silently mulling everything over, waiting. She stops Barb on the steps.
“We have to tell someone soon. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to keep this a secret.” and Barb nods, smiling. Stepping up to her girlfriend as she mumbles quietly, “I was thinking the same thing. Keeping you.. Keeping us.. Hidden.. I don’t want to.”
Robin smiles bright, opening the door so that Barb can step into the trailer. As the two of them set the bags that they’d grabbed from the trunk down, her mother speaks up. “Do you have to work today?”
“I need to get going, actually.”
Barb nods. “I can take her, Mrs. Buckley.”
Robin’s mother smiles. “She’s such a sweet girl, Robbie. You two have fun!”
As the two make their way out to  Barb’s parked car, they let out very ragged breaths. “That was.. Close.”
“Not as close as last weekend. I was just about to kiss you and Steve wandered out onto the patio to smoke.” Barb admits, making Robin gape at her in surprise. “You were.. About to kiss me?”
Barb laughs softly. “Why wouldn’t I want to kiss you, huh?”
Robin laughs, shrugs and answers quietly, “I.. I don’t know. I’m still shocked, okay?” Barb nods, smiling as she turns out of the driveway and onto the dirt and gravel road leading into Forest Hills. “Me too.”
“I hate that we have to hide this.”
“So do I. We’re going to tell everyone soon.”
“We are.”
As the car heads into town, Barb’s hand leaves the wheel, settling over the top of Robin’s hand, giving it a soft little squeeze before Robin laces their fingers together and leans towards Barb, leaning her head against Barb’s shoulder.
“These heels are killing my feet.” you stop behind the rest of your friends to  take off the heels you’ve been wearing all day and Nancy laughs. “I don’t know why you keep wearing them.”
“Because they make my ass look good?” you laugh as you shrug and look up at her through a curtain of hair. Nancy’s laughing too. “But you’re always complaining about how painful they are.”
“You’ve got me there.” you straighten to full height and start to walk again, the heels tucked beneath your arm. As you make your way past the service station, you happen to see Eddie Munson sitting on a 5 gallon barrel out in the back. He’s smoking, dark brown hair stuck to his face. He’s got his shirt off and a pair of FR overalls with the bib down at his waist and you’re mesmerized.
“__.. You’re staring again.”
“Uh uh.”
“You were.”
“I can’t help it he’s pretty and my eyes enjoy the view.” you give a sheepish shrug and Nancy laughs, shaking her head at you. “Instead of staring, go do something about it.” she gives you a gentle shove towards the opening in the  fence.
“I can’t!”
“You can. You need to because the sexual tension between you is unreal, okay? Look.. I’ve been in the same room as both of you at the same time and I almost choked on the way the air got so thick.”
You laugh, shaking your head. But you’re lingering in the opening of fence. Your eyes roam over him, taking in the side profile. The grease smear on his cheek. The way kissable lips curl around a Marlboro Red as he drags the back of his hand over his sweaty forehead to wipe away the sweat.
“It’s a new world, __. You can totally make the first move.”
“I cannot!” you’re gaping at Nancy when you say it, but then you happen to look back just in time to see Eddie glance up, looking right at you. He grins and stands, wandering over.
You swallow hard as he comes to a stop in front of you because there’s just something about the way he absolutely towers over you that drives you crazy. You step closer before you can stop yourself and Eddie chuckles. “Careful, woman. I’m all sweaty n’ dirty n’ shit right now.” Doe eyes settle on your bare feet. “What the hell are y’ doin, there’s glass and shit out here.”
“These shoes,” you raise the pair of stilettos so he can see them, “Were killing my feet.”
He snickers to himself, shaking his head. He’s trying to stop himself but he just can’t. The urge to be closer to you wins out so he steps even closer. “How’d your first day go?”
“It went.” you laugh. “It was pretty boring. All I did was try to give the woman an actual filing system that was easy to keep up with and answer phones?” you notice that his knuckles are caked in dried blood so you raise his hand, surveying the damage as you hiss and glance up at him. “What the hell did you do?”
He chuckles. “Got th’ station wagon from hell in my garage bay. I might’ve slammed the damn hood on my hand because of course, the hood latch is a piece of garbage too.”
“Eddie, you need to clean this.”
“Woman, it’s fine.”
“Eddie, your hand could rot.” you scold gently. He chuckles, turning away to thump his cigarette into the gravel behind him. Then he turns to face you again. And he’s got this teasing look in his eyes. “Aw..” he mutters, leaning down just a little, “You worried about me, doll?”
You stick out your tongue. “I’m just telling you what could happen if you don’t clean out the wound.”
“You really don’t wanna know what I did last week when th’ box cutter slipped when I was tearin’ down boxes at the record store.” he chuckles. He’s teasing a little. You swallow hard. “I probably don’t. I swear to God if you say you used super glue…”
“Maybe I did.”
“God damn it, Eddie. If you needed actual medical attention.. What is it with men and their stubborn refusal to go to a fucking doctor?” you laugh softly, shaking your head. Eddie laughs too and he shrugs. “And women who insist on wearin’ shoes that hurt their feet. Kinda the same thing, right?”
“Not really?” you raise a brow, laughing again.  Raising a hand to rest against his bare chest before you even realize that you’ve done it. Eddie’s breath hangs and he gulps as he looks down at the way your hand’s settled against his chest tattoos.
He shuffles his feet because currently, all the blood in his body is southbound. Straight to his cock.
And you’re struggling. Trying to think of something to say. When you open your mouth, you’re honestly not expecting what comes out.
“Are you doing anything later?”
Eddie rubs his chin as he stares down at you, trying not to marvel over how your pretty little body would be easily engulfed by his. Or how good that might feel. How it’s something he might be able to let himself get used to.
You barely manage to pull yourself together and when you go to answer him, you accidentally squeak out your answer. He laughs and nods. “9’s okay, right?”
“9 is perfect.”
“Are you opposed to the motorcycle?” he asks.
“Not at all.” you mumble out the answer, managing to step away from him a little as Nancy laughs nearby and speaks up. “I think Barb and Robin are at the  diner waiting.”
You glance at her to nod and turn your attention back to Eddie. “Try not to bust anymore knuckles today, Eddie?”
“I’m not makin any promises, woman.” Eddie responds, stepping up into you. His hand lingers close, grazing against your hip and you feel your breath hang in your throat. “I gotta get going.” you finally manage to say it after about four or five seconds of just staring up at him.
Mesmerized.
