The Trauma effect.
It is coming up on 10 years since I fell ill suddenly with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. It seems such a long time ago and the effects of the illness are still with me today. Let me explain; I have been left with permanent nerve damage in both legs, I suffer with nerve pain that can affect my legs, arms, hands and face. This sometimes is like my body having electric shocks that run through it, a very strange sensation and quite painful and I suffer from fatigue due to the disabilities.
The one that always catches me out is when it runs through my face, it is so sudden and is like being hit in the face by a heavy weight boxer.
These are the residuals I live with, but you know what I count my blessings more than I count my ailments. Why? To put it simply I am alive!!!
You see, despite my weak legs, I can walk short distances, I sometimes need a wheelchair but I am alive. My arms and hands can be annoying with the weakness and nerve pain but I can do so much that I never thought I would be able to do. My face when the nerve tick happens is truly painful, but it passes and I regain my senses. To put all this as simply as I can, they are all ailments that I live with but they do not define the person that I am.
So how do I define myself? I know that I am wonderfully created, I know that God loves me so much that He chose to save me. Today I am a church Pastor who just happens to be disabled; but more than any of this I know I am loved by God through Christ Jesus. On a standpoint of my faith I am alive “In Christ.” Ephesians 2: 4-6.
As I walk with God daily in my life I am reminded of the path I have taken to get where I am today. Life is not always easy, but God walks the darkest paths with us Guiding us through the depths of our own despair in this world. Psalm 23: 4, Psalm 119:105.
So, yes I live with disability and the trauma of this world but I live my life with a very able God; who guides me and leads me and is an ever present help in my hours of need. I know that I am not perfect but then who is?
Lastly here I want to tell you that no matter what you face, face it with courage, face it head on, for God is with you even in the depths of your deepest trials, and never give up. You may find yourself like me, living with the trauma as a reminder of the struggles you have been through, but never let them define you for you are alive and alive “In Christ.”

Living through the storm/part 5
Some days are just a complete trial.
I had been in hospital around three months and now moved to a new hospital where my rehabilitation was to begin. I was really looking forward to the new challenges that were ahead and I believed I could meet them head on and would succeed. Failure wasn’t something I had considered. Yet here I was severely disabled, just a few short months ago I had been completely paralysed yet now I believed I would succeed and get my life back exactly how it was before.
This may sound strange but I am going to tell you things will never be as they were, if we hold onto the past and refuse to move on we become stuck just where we are. For me to recover I had to move forward and keep on striving for a new day, for new circumstances.
So in short, my life changed and God continually showed me the way but things could not go back to how they were. If we read the bible in Joshua 1:6-7 we read that God tells Joshua to be “Strong and very courageous.” and he will lead the people. Joshua had always been under Moses leadership and now here he was being told to be the leader. Sometimes in life we need to be strong and courageous too. Leading may mean that we have to be strong and courageous and when I was ill I certainly felt that though I wanted to go back to what was familiar and for everything to be as it was or had been that in fact God knew it could not.
You see I had to be strong and courageous, I had to throw off the old life I had had. I had to in some ways make a new life out of the ashes of the old, but if I refused to do this then nothing would change for the better. I would have been stuck with all the same problems, all the same issues that were in my life. So yes I had to be strong and very courageous. That doesn’t mean that it didn’t hurt or that I never feared but God has a way with us where he is loving and encouraging us through the steps we need to take. Actually so loving that as you take steps to rectify and sort your life problems out and are strong then you always find Him in the midst of those tough decisions.
In my case I was fighting to recover physically and personally on another level. The storms that swirled around me were intense. There were days I cried quietly, days where I was brave and trusting of God, days where I couldn’t be bothered due to the enormity of the situation I was in. However God was my ever constant source of courage, he willed me on and I knew I had to be strong and courageous otherwise only failure would be left for me.
So today be brave, be strong and very courageous. The Lord your God will be with you always and forever.

Disabled - Not finished or useless
Life does throw some serious curve balls!
9 years ago I had no idea what being disabled was, how it affects your life and your chances in the work place just because of disability. Yet I have now lived so long as a disabled man that it is a part of my life that today seems normal.
I have a friend who is also disabled and we had a chat about what was normal, he is wise beyond his years and he said to me, “who’s to say our disability isn’t what is normal?” He was dead right, I think that I had lived searching and striving to regain my ability and to not be disabled, yet in this very quote I found true identity. It’s an identity where we can embrace true reality, so what am I getting at tonight?
Too many people accept that to be recognised as disabled must mean that you are inferior, that there is something wrong with you, well here’s the truth “there is nothing wrong with me!” I may need to do things slightly differently, I may need to work out how to do something in a new way but I do not identify with being useless or finished because of disability.
I am going to say something that will not shock any of you but it really should, but discrimination is rife in the work place and the worst form of it is when employers/prospective employers try to hide the fact that it is the norm.
When people like MP Philip Hammond go around saying “ Britain’s sluggish productivity could partly be blamed on more disabled people in the workforce.” you don’t have to look far to see discrimination will be rife elsewhere if MP’s are saying things like this too.
No disabled person should be made to feel less worthy than any other person; because you know what, I have skills that able bodied people don’t have and equally they have abilities I don’t have. We need to strive for a world where the workplace is not propped up by hearing somebody like this say that productivity will be worse because of disabled employment. But that regardless of how we look, and how we are recognised in society we are worthy and that discrimination has no place in our world on any grounds.
You know my faith plays a big part of who I am today, it is the centre of my being as a person. I know that I would not be here today if I had not held onto God in the midst of my year in hospital. There are days I would not have gotten through had I not had my faith and God with me through this very difficult year of my life. Faith Through the Storm is my book about illness, about God and trials and how I overcame them all to lead the life I do today. Illness, disability, difficulty, none of these things should stop us living the lives we wan’t to. We may need to adapt how we go about doing something but we are not useless; we are only that if we accept our fate and give in.
So today I say to you have faith and trust that you can do it. To the employers out there don’t be scared by what some people say but trust that if a disabled person is qualified to do the job you have advertised then they are as a capable as anyone else. Let’s look beyond a persons unique disability or their abilities and see the person, the human who has a normal way of living. Here is the truth “We all have disabilities and this is normal.”
