Rail traffic resumes in Gotthard rail tunnel after fire

Freight trains have been circulating again in Switzerland's Gotthard Base Tunnel since 2pm on Monday. Rail traffic had been suspended for six hours after a vehicle caught fire early in the morning near the tunnel exit in southern Switzerland. Swiss public radio, SRF, reported on Monday that a vehicle belonging to a security firm had caught fire at around 8:20am at the end of the tunnel exit near Faido in canton Ticino. In all, 29 workers were evacuated on a rescue train. Ten of them had to be taken to hospital after inhaling smoke, the Ticino cantonal police said. Rail freight traffic was suspended for six hours. Image par shilin wang de Pixabay Pendant les fêtes de Noël et du Nouvel An, il faudra s’attendre à de longs embouteillages et à de fortes perturbations du trafic en raison des départs en vacances, principalement en direction des domaines skiables. L’OFROU prévoit également un trafic important sur les autoroutes des agglomérations et du Plateau. Les effets des déplacements des vacanciers se feront sentir sur l’A1, l’A2, l’A3, l’A9 et l’A13, et en particulier dans les régions de Zurich, Berne, Bâle, Lucerne et Lugano, dans le secteur du tunnel du Gothard, sur la route du San Bernardino entre Sargans et Rothenbrunnen ainsi que sur les tronçons en direction de l’Oberland bernois et du Valais. Dès le Nouvel An et jusqu’au 8 janvier probablement, les trajets de retour seront nombreux. Décharger les localités en restant sur l’autoroute en cas d’embouteillages Un volume de circulation important qui s’accompagne d’embouteillages et de pertes de temps sur les axes principaux entraîne fréquemment un report du trafic sur d’autres routes. Ce phénomène pèse sur les habitants des localités qui bordent les routes nationales et a finalement pour effet de paralyser le trafic dans les régions concernées. Les déplacements individuels et d’affaires locaux, les transports publics (bus, car postaux) et la mobilité douce sur les routes cantonales et communales sont perturbés, et le risque d’accident augmente. Il est donc important que les voyageurs restent sur l’autoroute même en cas d’embouteillages, ne serait-ce que par respect pour la population locale.  Durant les fêtes aussi, l’Office fédéral des routes (OFROU) restera en contact étroit avec les autorités des cantons particulièrement touchés, notamment avec les forces de police. Medels im Rheinwald-San Bernardinopass-Airolo 131 km.

Nach einem leckeren Frühstück im Walserhof sind wir um 10.30 Uhr losgefahren: Nufenen-Hinterrhein-über den San Bernardinopass 🌸🌼🌺 und wieder runter ⬇️ via Cappella Cebbia-Loggiano-Deira-Soazza. Dort haben wir gegen 14.00 h im Grotto Verbi Mittagspause gemacht. Nach verschiedenen Routenvorschlägen beschlossen wir, dass unser Tagesziel heute Airolo ist. Also fuhren wir ca um 15.40 h weiter via Cabbiolo-Lostallo-Verdabbio-Roveredo-Lumino TICINO☀️🌴!-Bellinzona. Dann Richtung Biasca weitergetuckerlet und schliesslich via Faido-kleiner Apero auf dem Weg-erreichten wir 10 Minuten nach dem Gewitter unser Zimmer in Airolo. Trockene Kleider angezogen, nasse Kleider mit Ludovica im Tumbler gestartet. In unserer Strasse, einige Häuser weiter, vis à vis vom Bahnhof 🚉 , gingen wir eine sehr feine Pizza essen.🍕😋Beim Nachhause Laufen setzte der Regen 🌧 wieder ein und die morgigen Prognosen sind nass… 💦💦 Wir konnten heute bei heissem sonnigen ☀️ Wetter viele schöne Velowege fahren und Teilstrecken mit sehr wenig Verkehr auf Hauptstrassen. 🌻 Auf dem San Bernardinopass war es sehr erfrischend und windig 🥶💨

“The juxtaposition of color is amazing.  This man [Claude Monet] was the real father of abstract expressionism.  I take that back, maybe Turner...” (”Midnight In Paris”)  Reflecting on Monet’s iconic “Water Lilies,” at the Museum of Modern Art, is an awesome experience.  On a much smaller scale, I also enjoyed my encounter with J.M.W. Turner’s “The Pass at St. Gotthard, near Faido” at the Morgan Library and Museum.  After visiting the actual location, art critic John Ruskin found that “the mountains, compared with Turner’s colossal conception, look pigmy & poor.”  (Photo taken on October 27, 2017)

The Roadtrip to Hell :: Stop 3: Zurich (With a Stop in Faido)

Night Before

The family gets to Zurich overnight, and park to sleep, with Jericho once again entering the dreamscape. 

Jericho asks Nethaniel what the hell is going on with that dream, and Neth says it's none of his business. Jericho argues that - if he was going to be getting nightmares- then it absolutely is. Neth doesn’t have a rebuttal, but tells him that his end was not as peaceful as one might think. Jericho doesn’t know what he means, but Neth disappears, not answering any of his follow-up questions. 

Day 1

Jericho awakens, with Helena happy to wake up with her dad there. They plot out their day, saying that they were going to do “museums” today, and “activities” The next, for the most part. 

They start their day at the Swiss National Museum, with Jericho taking many photos, and Helena buying a new hat.   

While in the museum, Helena keeps sprouting medieval facts that were just slightly wrong, and after she stated one that was just off enough, Neth basically forces his way through and corrects her almost aggressively. She then asks him to correct the placards, and while at first he seems iffy about it, he starts doing it passively, and Helena asks follow-up questions. It ends up being a fun time for her, and she asks him how he knows so much about the middle ages, and he states that he is from that time, confirming her suspicions. 

Helena states that they’re going to the Rietberg Museum next for a picnic lunch with pictures, and Neth shrugs, souring Helena's mood on him once more. The time in the museum is quiet this go around, but Neth seems a bit more attentive to her. When she’s writing in a notebook about a renaissance painting, he actually asks her what she’s doing, and she says it's for school - her art class wants her to talk about art that she likes and why.  

After a walk through half of the museum, they go to the cafe, where Helena asks for one of the picnic baskets, and they sit out in the park for lunch. Neth complains about Jericho’s limited palette, making Helena honestly laugh, saying that just because he doesn’t like snails doesn't mean he can’t eat other things. Neth rolls his eyes, complaining about his preference for lamb since he hates lamb. He lays down after eating, and Helena uses her phone to talk to Beatrice.

When Helena goes to ask Neth if they should leave, she sees that he fell asleep, and when she shakes him awake, her father is back in control. 

They go through the other half of the museum, and end their day at the Clockwork and Watch Museum. Helena ends the day rereading the story of “The Mad Prince Nethaniel and his beloved Queen” She reads it quietly to herself, but notices that little things about Nethaniel don’t make sense from what she’s learned about him, particularly what was supposedly his last meal - a food he just told her that he couldn’t stand. She texts Muriel and requests that she finds something more about Queen Vanessa of Catalonia. She gets a thumbs up in response. 

Day 2

The next day, they woke up - Helena stuck with Neth that morning, but wasn’t as off about it as before. Helena leads the way to the shopping district - Bahnhofstrasse. Neth seems unimpressed with most of the luxury goods on sale, scrutinizing the clothing the most, annoying at some of the “ametuer” stitching on a particular coat. Helena sasses with him about his fancy taste, and manages a smile out of him that doesn’t feel condescending. 

Their next stop was the Botanical gardens at the city university. Neth ended up taking a ton of photos, with Helena recommending certain shots, and the two having a pretty good time, which was a bit off for Helena. She didn’t want to like this jerk, but he was funny, and wasn’t being as mean as he had been before. 

They stopped for lunch, and Helena makes of point of getting herself something with ham in it, and Neth gets pork as well - in the form of back bacon. She asked if he liked bacon, and he said that he’d never had “bacon” before, just pork belly. They shared an amusing moment where Neth takes the first bite, and then scarfs it down. Helena laughs and says that something he shares with her father, who also loves all forms of bacon. 

They make their way up to Lindenhof after setting up on a blanket under the shade of a tree, and Helena ends up falling into a light sleep with her head on his leg. He thinks quietly about her odd change of attitude, watching out and looking upon Zurich with interest. He’d never been this far east as a living being. He’d only ever heard of Zurich through the travels of others. He talks to himself - as if to Helena, of his home in Catalonia, and the last time he got close to going back to himself before  the body he’d taken over having him exorcised back into his hellish box. He doesn’t realize that Helena had woken up and was listening. By the time she sits up though, its her father who is in control, and the two of them share a puzzled look at what Neth had been talking about

The day ends with a stroll along the river, and a ride on the Limmat cruise, with Helena wondering more about Neth, who seemed more off and not-on-brand now than he had even a few days ago. Maybe he’d mellowed out? 

She gets a message from Muriel, who sends her a link to a long article about Queen Vanessa. She resolves to read it while they’re traveling tomorrow. 

At night, while Jericho and Neth are in the dreamscape, Jericho thanks Neth for making Helena’s day fun and enjoyable, something he sometimes struggles with as a single father with only so much time in the day. He rolls his eyes at this and brushes it off. Jericho rolls his eyes right back, and decides to wander about in the nonsense of the dream. But, when he gets too close to a wooden door, Neth drags him away from it, telling him he won’t like what he finds in there. 

Leaving

Jericho awakens, and sees that Helena is fast asleep still. He’s a bit relieved at this, and takes some time to write a new blog post draft about Zurich. He looks at their map, seeing they’d have to stop in Faido for a break. They’d never been there before, and he started looking things up - There was a very pretty waterfall - that could make a good hike for Helena, as well as a nice place for photographs. Once Helena wakes up, they get the van ready, and head out. 

Rest Stop 4: Faido (From Zurich 1 Hour 45 Minutes)

While driving, Helena is reading the old story, which goes like this

Nethaniel of Catalonia is engaged to Princess Vanessa of Britannia, and they were very happy. However, after the prince was caught cheating, it was believed that a saint cursed him to madness, and he was imprisoned and locked away per order of the priesthood, his loyal servant charged to watch over his ancient grave. However his madness spread to her, and she nearly destroyed Catalonia before Nethaniels brother, the beloved prince Felipe Marca, who became king soon after, saved the kingdom by slaying her

Helena rereads the story again on her phone, and starts finding little details that don’t add up about how they refer to Nethaniel. 

They get to Faido, and Jericho asks if she’s ready for a little hike? She welcomes it, and they head out. 

They get to the waterfall, take pictures and have lunch. Helena goes near the water and is still thinking about Neth’s legend. She wants to talk to Beatrice about it. She always has good ideas. She returns to her dad and asks him some vague questions about Neth, which he tries to answer. They end up both coming to the same conclusion - something here doesn’t add up. 

They drive, and park outside of Milan for the night. Night comes and Helena has a nightmare and is woken up by who she assumes is her father, who she clings to and mutters to for several minutes as she calms down. He asks what the dream was about. She says that she dreamed she was in the “cave” again, and that two different voices were calling for her but she couldn’t tell which one was him, and as she fell into the water in the cave, two hands reached for her, and she woke up. She asks for reassurance, and he gives it to her, assuring her that he would always go after her. Something in his tone is off but she falls asleep after the reassurance.
