Best of 2022
Tumblr media
Here it is: my yearly summation of the small labels working through rising costs and punishing manufacturing delays, the artists making music unafraid of chance, and the freaks supporting all of it in spite of the daily consequences of a ruling class increasingly detached from reality. Lots more that deserve accolades from more prestigious publications, and I'm sure they'll get 'em, but these are records that were inseparable from certain points of my year, including now. Yeah, they were all kinda my favorite at one point, and could be again tomorrow, but Kilynn Lunsford is #1 for a reason. Glad to be back at shows, however sparingly, experiencing all the awkward camaraderie and room-silencing/room-flattening performances that come with them. It all feels more necessary than ever. Up and up in a world of lava. Happy New Year, everyone.

Best records 2022 - part one
So, in the latest episode of De Algemene Verwarring, #84, I mentioned that I put a list of what I think are the best records of 2023 on my personal Facebook page, and that is a bit of a pity for Facebook users that are not connected with me and even more for non-Facebook users, as someone pointed out. Some listeners are curious, but honestly, if you’re a regular listener of the show you should probably be familiar with most of these. And it won’t surprise many of you that there are quite some Swedish records in there. So, here we go. 10 to 6 plus best of the rest.
10. The Idealist - A Lion Is A Lion And Not A Lamb (Meakusma) - I’ve always thought The Idealist (Joachim Nordwall from Skull Defekts) was a dub project and I don’t like dub so I thought hey I won’t like this. But it turns out this records isn’t that dubby and I like it.
youtube
9. The Drin - Engine Sings For The Pale Moon (Drunken Sailor) - first released on a very limited tape, this is a solo project from a guy from The Serfs and Drunken Sailor saved it from total obscurity. In the meantime two more records have been released that sound a little different but this one is perfect.
youtube
8. Astrid Øster Mortensen – Skærgårdslyd (Discreet Music) - The difficult second record. I like it, but I liked her first one better, probably because she sings more on the first record. Still, this is absolutely gorgeous.
youtube
7. Puppet Wipes - The Stones Are Watching & They Can Be A Handful (Siltbreeze) - Just recently bought this one and I’m very intrigued. First Canadian band on the Siltbreeze label. Features a member of Judy & The Jerks, but it’s not punk, it’s scabby lo-fi rock and I love it.
youtube
6. Arv & Miljö - Vålnad Av Fornskog (Discreet Music) - part 4 of the “seasonal ambient” albums from the project of Matthias Andersson, who runs the Discreet Music and I Dischi Del Barone labels, and it is as beautiful as the three previous ones, but now that this series is over and done with I’m curious about his next steps. Started as a harsh noise act, by the way.
youtube
Best of the rest:
Poison Ruin - Poison Ruin (Drunken Sailor)
Lettera 22 - Exposition of Clove (Nashazphone)
Stefan Christensen - Atlas Rand (Kashual Plastik)
Klara Livet - Varandra (Förlag För Fri Musik)
Sarah Davachi - Two Sisters (Late Music)
Organ Of Corti - Auris (New Forces)
Lewsberg - In Your Hands (Self-released)
Ekin Fil - Dora Agora (Helen Scarsdale Agency)
Non Plus Temps - Desire Choir (Post Present Medium)
Exek - Advertise Here (Castle Face)

Laughing with the gods
Tumblr media
A couple latecomers in 2023 that ought not to be missed. Happy New Year, in February.
Drifting, Dream Autopsy (Förlag För Fri Musik)
A welcome sign that the Discreet Music-adjacent actors continue to find grey skies and grimy alleys to haunt. Drifting is an overseas collaboration between Form Hunter's Weston Czerkies and Gothenburg's own Julia Bjernelind and Dan Johansson. Both Julia and Dan are in Amateur Hour, and Dream Autopsy ends up around the same neighborhood as the underrated Krökta Tankar och Brända Vanor double LP, but Weston reorients Drifting with a strong emphasis on tape hiss and mechanical noise. Within this space, Julia's voice acts more as a poltergeist haunting the proceedings; there are probably proper lyrics, but long song titles are colorful enough, and the keening vocals provide instrumental contrast to the rather bleak, often caustic rumblings below. A few brief respites are found across the album: the beginning of "Kill Them All at Once," for example, is a catchy yet eerie vocals-and-keyboard snippet, and the very end of "Narratives In Music Is a Fuck (In Two Parts)" rides distantly groaning tape loops with Julia's sickly-sweet vocals. The push-pull between the gentle vocals and the tape noise is presented as organically as possible, playing out as two sidelong tracks devoid of any clunky transitions or jarring cuts. Dream Autopsy doesn't come as much of a surprise in terms of the sounds within; the label's own "sublime tape music" descriptor fits. But how effectively the sounds are rendered makes it feel more intentional than just a meeting of the minds. Shocking how much this one sticks once it's over, and even more shocking that it's still widely available - scoop now and avoid regret later.
Mount Trout, Petrol Bush (Albert's Basement)
Praise be to Albert's Basement for putting the new Mount Trout album on wax, something I've daydreamed about doing for both Screwy and Shelter Belt but never had the connections, know-how or gumption to do. The warm-sounding, naturally imperfect vinyl format is readymade for Mount Trout's brand of detuned, shambling and spacious music, a tradition the guitar-bass-drums trio continues on Petrol Bush. This one feels like the most approachable of their three albums to date, with tracks like "Dan's Bar," "Aquatic Waltz" and "No Wrong" featuring sparkling guitars and gentle tempos that could slot in next to Devotion-era Beach House on a playlist. True to form, there's some grit and sinew buried in the mix, a couple curveballs lest you get too comfortable in the late day sunshine conjured by certain tracks. I'll let you decipher the lyrics to "Dreams," and "Find a Man" and "Shoveller" simmer with a nearly AmRep level of angst. "Find a Man" is particularly jarring, coming after the daydreaming "Aquatic Waltz,” where the lyrics ("Find a man, find a man/who can be my lover") become drawn out and more menacing as the song goes on. The lyrical efficiency on "Find a Man" is a new refinement for the band across Petrol Bush, and one need look no further than the first track here for proof. The lyrics are made up of little more than "Laughing with the gods/I don't know/if things are really good," slipping a splinter under the fingernail during some Dionysian afternoon. It's the space Mount Trout has always lived in, looking for comfort or peace (possibly found on "No Wrong") but embracing the pain, injustice and shame pervasive in the world. Petrol Bush, like Shelter Belt, puts me in a contemplative, somewhat melancholy headspace, but everything here feels warm, gently baked in the sun; it sits somewhere between Low and Palace Brothers, but with enough needling from the lyrics to sidestep any self-pity. The LP was released late last year, and didn't land here until late January, otherwise it might've taken the top spot in my year-end list for 2023. Highly, highly recommended; put it on and simmer in it while the great thaw beckons.
ssabæ, Le Roi Est L'oiseau (Few Crackles)
Blink-and-it's-gone release from mid-November 2023, courtesy of France's intriguing and selective Few Crackles label. ssabæ released Azurescens one year before and was favorably reviewed by some shops and writers I respect, and while I managed to grab a copy from Technique Street (fave shop/distro, big ups), at the time it felt a bit too refined and stately for my taste. Still, there was something present in the music that made it past the sparkling reviews and limited edition pressing, and stuck in my craw long enough to make checking out this new album a priority. Glad I did, because Le Roi Est L'oiseau is even better. The loose collective running about 12 members deep, according to all of the names on the sleeve, takes elements of jazz, folk, field recordings and chamber music to make this hushed, spare music that only works with the rapt attention of the listener. On one hand, this is a collection of influences and sounds that pops up a lot these days, either from contemporary outfits or reissues, and it's not really a priority for me to make space for all of it; on the other hand, a track like Le Roi Est L'oiseau's "Le Premier Soir du Monde" comes on, sits you down and makes apparent the potential of this amalgamation of sounds in the right hands. There is an almost alchemical, mystical element to ssabæ, the austere presentation giving the impression that these sounds are sacred and deeply spiritual. The sounds here live in darkness, stillness, away from any light pollution; where notable contemporaries use repetition to transcend this sphere, ssabæ conjure shadows and voices in isolation. The stunning title track could fit on the Twin Peaks soundtrack were it devoid of kitsch, and there've been more than a few late nights where the voices at the end of the track get under my skin. Quintessential late-night soundtrack, near-perfect in presentation and execution, and hopefully an album the label sees fit to make available again.
Stress Positions, Harsh Reality (Three One G)
I caught Stress Positions at a last-minute show booked here in Knoxville last December, knowing only that (a) Iron Lung reissued their demo on vinyl, and (b) the Chicago band was mostly made up of former members of C.H.E.W., who also had an LP and 7" on Iron Lung. The band went on to tear apart my flagrant indifference and put on one of the best sets I saw all year, drawing mostly from their just-released LP on Three One G, a label that I had no idea was still active. It's getting harder for me to differentiate hardcore punk, let alone get excited about analyzing why some bands are more convincingly pissed off than others. Stress Positions make it easy with acrobatic drumming courtesy of Jon Giralt (check "White Leech"), meaty riffs smeared with righteous anger, and the performance of Stephanie Brooks, a vocalist that can easily shift from rapid-fire to menacing. It doesn't hurt that the songs tackle politically-induced pervasive poverty, white privilege and police brutality with pointed lyrics and the appropriate high level of rage and indignation. The band does the fast stuff as effectively as they can do mosh-worthy: "No Sympathy (For the Police)" is the most fun you'll have stage-diving to hating cops, and "Performative Justice" fits an impressive number of movements in its grinding 25 seconds. It's after "Performative Justice" that things begin to depart from the norms of hardcore; "Sunken Place" has the same feel as the rest of the record, but the lyrics are more opaque ("Hell is a sunken place/in awe of its power/a subtle spasm flirts with desire"), and the crawling closer "Ode to Aphrodite" lumbers with a violent Life Time-era Rollins Band level of menace before the raging close. It's a jaw-dropping ending, both musically and lyrically anomalous for hardcore, the lyrics tackling the repression of sexual desire tangled within a hollow morality. Powerful record; here's hoping they stick together to tease out the ideas in the last two tracks into another recording.

Best of 2023 - part 2
So, last year I posted my best-of-2022 list on this Tumblr page after some non Facebook minded listeners asked me about it, and this time I'm being proactive so here it is, my best records and gigs of 2023, starting with the records that were released in 2023 - 6 to 1 + best gigs 2023. With YouTube clips or Bandcamp links if available.
6. CIA Débutante: Down, Willow (Siltbreeze) - best record yet of the duo CIA Débutante, and they also released the collab lp with Al Karpenter, also a beast of a record.
youtube
5. Leda: Neuter (Discreet) - guitar loops looping guitar loops looping. It's Leda, you know what to expect, and still this is probably, together with the Music For A Film tape, the best effort of Sofie Herner so far. And very close to what she did with Neutral too.
youtube
4. The Sheaves: Excess Death Cult Time (Minimum Table Stacks) - bizarre nasal post-punk. The record is too short, but so great. First released on tape, thanks to MTS now also on vinyl. The Fall is dead, long live The Sheaves.
3. Drifting: Dream Autopsy (Förlag För Fri Musik) - Angelic voices on a background of tape loops and sheer noise. New trio with Sewer Election, Form Hunter and Julia from Amateur Hour. Probably sounds like Amateur Hour without the songs/guitars.
youtube
2. Ordeal: Vätterns Pärla (Aguirre) - there was already a very limited tape released in 2020 that was screaming for more, and suddenly out of nothing comes Vätterns Pärla, released on Belgian label Aguirre Records, and when they made this announcement I kinda jumped out of my chair with excitement. Ordeal is another alter ego of Dan Johansson of Sewer Election/Neutral/Amateur Hour and more, and this drone music inspired by master Maurizio Bianchi. Great great record.
1. Famous Mammals: Instant Pop Expressionism Now! (Siltbreeze) - Same story: there was a tape first and a digital release and then suddenly this record on Siltbreeze and it's sooooo good. And it's a supergroup made up of Andy Jordan (Andy Human, Non Plus Temps, The World, Lenz, Naked Roommate), Stanley Martinez (Rays, Children Maybe Later, Violent Change) and Amber Sermeño (The World, Naked Roommate). Again: The Fall is dead, long live Famous Mammals.
youtube
To end: it wasn't a big hot gigs year, but there's been more than enough to enjoy. Here's a small list of the best shows I saw in 2023:
Oi Boys @ De Kreun/Pit’s
Ignatz/Christophe Clébard @ Pit’s
The Serfs @ Pit’s
Front 242 @ De Kreun
France @ Pit’s
Bad Breeding @ Pit’s
Pain Appendix & Sisto Rossi @ Crude Transmissions Festival, Leiden
Olimpia Splendid @ Trefpunt
Tramhaus @ De Kreun
Boy Harsher @ Dour Festival
Gee Tee @ Pit’s
Stereolab & Chalk @ Sonic City
Venediktos Tempelboom @ a chapel in Kortrijk.
Enjoy 2024. De Algemene Verwarring #104 is coming up on January 8!

Monokultur Live at Folk
Tumblr media
When the support act outshines the headliner! Monokultur were great. Live, their music took on a different dimension. Tracks like Dåliga Nyheter sounded particularly impressive. The album is still available digitally here or here. The Ever/Never vinyl edition is out at some point soon and the Förlag För Fri Musik  version can still be snagged via Discogs.

De Algemene Verwarring #98 - 2 October 2023
The ninety-eighth episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, October 2, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Again, I'm late, I know. You know, work, life, gym, etcetera. Anyway, pictured below is the UK anarcho punk band Poison Girls. They are one of the many bands on the excellent double lp compilation"Cease & Resist - Anarcho Punk In The Uk 1979-1986", released by Optimo Music. I played their track "Underbitch" in this episode. I can't say I'm really familiar with the anarcho punk subgenre, and that's why I welcome compilations like this one. There's some obvious bands on it such as Crass, Honey Bane, Chumbawamba, Flux Of Pink Indians and Zounds, but also quite a few names that I had never heard of. I've heard the name Poison Girls before, obviously, as they are one of the better known bands, but to be honest I have never really checked their music, but after hearing this track "Underbitch" I might very well do an effort to listen to some more Poison Girls. You might hear more from this compilation in the upcoming next episodes. Also there's new and less new music from Famous Mammals, Burnt Envelope, Buck Biloxi, Now, The Cool Greenhouse, Al Karpenter & CIA Debutante, Private Arms, Soccer Committee and last but not least: Coil! And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for the show. Enjoy!

Pictured below is Rick Froberg, here performing with Drive Like Jehu somewhere in the early nineties. It’s always a pity that I have to write something about someone who passed away unexpectedly at a much too young age. Rick Froberg was 55. That’s only three years older than I am, and he died from natural causes. Froberg was an graphic artist but was mainly known as frontman and guitar player for the bands (in chronological order) Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Snakes, and Obits and only that last one wasn’t with his partner in crime John ‘Swami’ Reis. I’ve seen the last three of those bands live, and I have always been most impressed with Drive Like Jehu, who released only two full length albums, but whose influence cannot be underestimated. It’s their brilliant mixture of melody and dissonance that have influenced fellow nineties bands such as Polvo, Trumans Water, and many more. Drive Like Jehu played in the Pit’s in those early nineties, and the day after they played in a garden in my student home town Leuven, saw them twice and each time left me in amazement. Later I saw Hot Snakes in Ghent, and as encores they played two Drive Like Jehu tracks and in all honesty I can say those two tracks blew the whole Hot Snakes set away. Drive Like Jehu was a brilliant, a brilliant band and I cannot recommend you enough to buy their albums. And when you are 55, you don’t die, ok? Laat ons dat afspreken.
Other music in this episode, last one of the season by the way, comes from Avengers, TNT, Nots, Swell Maps, Soft Drinks, The Christian Family, Chrome Cranks, Dinosaur Jr & Lou Barlow, Nova Mob, De Fabriek, and there’s also brand new stuff from Roy Montgomery, Oroskällan, and Leda. Oh and by the way I have to apologize for a short break in the recording of this episode during the Brecht Ameel track. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy the summer and you’ll hear me back in September!

De Algemene Verwarring #81 - 14 November 2022
The eighty-first episode of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday November 14, 2022, and you can listen to it by clicking on the Mixcloud widget below. And if that does not work, here’s the direct link to the Mixcloud page:
https://www.mixcloud.com/MedialabKortrijk/de-algemene-verwarring-81-14-november-2022/
Pictured below is Frederikke Hoffmeier, aka Puce Mary. Puce Mary has been very active between 2011 and 2018, but 2018 was the year of the last full length “The Drought”, released on PAN. She was also active as the duo (with Jesse Sanes) JH1.FS3, but the last three-four years it’s been quiet around the power electronics project that is Puce Mary. Until recently, two new tapes were released on Hypersomnia Records, a new label probably started by Hoffmeier herself. It took a while to send the tapes to the listeners, and there were a lot of unhappy comments on the PM Bandcamp page, but the tapes were sent out and they are simply awesome. I’m playing a track out of the “You Must Have Been Dreaming” tape called “The Alphabet”, a track that shows a softer side of Puce Mary. The noise and the power electronics are a little more suppressed and turned inwards, more introspective, somewhere in between early Puce Mary releases and the JH1.FS3 releases, and I really hope that these two new releases give new energy to the Puce Mary project. In this episode we also shortly look back on a very nice Sonic City weekend here in Kortrijk with excellent shows by Lewsberg, Crack Cloud and Kiran Leonard, amongst others (EXEK were awesome too), and we play some new tracks by Vision 3D, Mitraille, Lithics, and old tracks from Kate Fagan, Galaxie 500, The Ex and Parquet Courts. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for the show. Enjoy!
