wow i immediately want to rewatch the return because holy fuck!  
i have a lot of thoughts, but think the main thing to note wrt the ending is that.. coop failed again. he fucked up on a cosmic scale this time. 
so the girl in the 1950s was sarah, which i didn’t catch at first, and as a result judy now inhabits her, but for all of dale/gordon/garland/phillip’s strategizing to find judy over the years, dale never realized that she was in twin peaks all along. just like he never realized that leland was bob until it was too late, or that he never realized the extent of windom’s plan until it was too late.
bob’s cooper form (mr. c) is killed through deus ex machina in the most literal way possible. after he is returned to the lodge, all main plot lines of the show seem to wrap up neatly, including the girl with no eyes magically becoming the real diane, except for the fact that dale’s fear/guilt-wracked face is superimposed over the entire scene. our false sense of security as watchers is slowly withered away.
the implication was that laura was somehow the one who could stop judy (because she’s “the One”, the angels were with her, or maybe simply because sarah was her mother?). dale attempts twice to finish the blue rose team’s 25-year-old plan, first by trying to snatch laura out of 1989 and second by taking carrie back to twin peaks. there are no concrete indications that laura would be able to accomplish the task at either of these points-- dale is running on intuition from 25 years ago, a “simpler” time when we saw him to be an exemplary agent with a fundamentally good nature. 
since then, mr. c has fundamentally altered the course of dale’s life and irreparably damaged so many others. dale expects things to be the same with diane, even after they go to texas and everything is “different”. she can’t look at him during lovemaking because she only sees her rapist. dale is compared by her with richard, who may or may not be his (or mr. c’s) son, and whom he has never personally met but whose name he reads with fearful recognition. 
his behavior delineates sharply from what we are used to seeing-- he’s sloppy, taciturn, reckless. he grabs a woman he believes to be laura and drives her halfway across the country because he believes that she can help him complete his mission, not realizing that he is also putting her in mortal danger on nothing more than a hunch. at the end, he can’t even remember what year it is. he’s still stuck in the lodge where the eternal question of “is it future or is it past?” is never answered. 
in the last shot, the lights go out. no more electricity. 
judy, being associated with the lodge spirits, feeds on pain and sorrow. she got what she wanted. if dale and mr. c are truly inextricable, as other characters and some of his behaviors indicate, then mr. c accomplished his mission to meet judy at the same time that cooper failed his mission to kill her. 
we don’t want to admit that cooper has darkness or failings in him. we want to see him as dougie, innocent and brave and caring. we don’t want to think about the pain and sorrow he caused or the pain and sorrow inside himself, just like the people of twin peaks didn’t want to see the pain and sorrow inside laura.
anyway i'm calling it quits there for now but wow what a show.

Then we are ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as God exhorting through us, we beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For He has made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
As we’ve been traveling across the United States, one of the messages we’ve been carrying is being a minister of reconciliation for bringing restoration of relationships between parties that have been divided and wounded.
Throughout this journey, we’ve spoken at multiple venues hearing numerous stories of congregations who have split for one reason or another. Yet through our outreach, divided communities have come together, in some instances for the first time since they parted ways.
The enemy works skillfully and diligently to divide, disrupt, and destroy the body of Messiah. But we have a duty and an obligation to be ministers of reconciliation and work toward spiritual unity.
When, through humility and prayerful seeking of God's mind, we learn to resolve conflicts, we will realize the unity of the Spirit and display the reconciling power of love (agape) and give testimony of Yeshua as He said," “They will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” [John 13:35]
The spirit of reconciliation does not necessarily require uniformity of belief but unity in deferential love, where disagreements are not in essentials. My wife and I disagree in several areas, for example, but we will not allow these disagreements to override our love for one another.
One of the greatest revivals in history, the Moravian revival endured for 100 years, as all the saints were committed to practicing this maxim, “In essentials UNITY, in non-essentials LIBERTY, and in all things LOVE.”
If we can unify in the essentials of our faith … without surrendering sound doctrine … not based on the spirit of ecumenism, but the unity of the Holy Spirit, our testimony will be authentic and powerful as we bring the message of the Kingdom, "Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand."
Reconciliation is the work of the Messiah, accomplished on His cross to reconcile men to God. Yeshua's exemplary work of reconciliation lays a completely sufficient foundation for us to walk in as well. We must diligently seek unity and reconciliation with one another, both individually and corporately, through humility, prayer, confession, and forgiveness. Our enemy, the Devil loves and knows how to divide us. Will we pursue the Lord's way? By the power of His Spirit, we can love one another and fight to achieve the Unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

At 200,000 sq. ft., this New Central Library replaces the outdated Faulk Central Library as part of the Austin Public Library System – doubling its capacity. The project team, City of Austin, and Austin community genuinely collaborated to envision a Library of the Future — a technology-rich, inviting community gathering place for exploration of knowledge and celebration of Austin’s unique and authentic culture. The New Central Library is a vibrant and flexible epicenter for the entire Austin community, imbued with connections to the outdoors.

Country Bank Chairman Honored for Leadership by U.S. Marine Corps University Foundation
Country Bank New York Chairman Joseph M. Murphy, a U.S. Marine, has been named the recipient of The Major General John H. Russell Leadership Award by the Marine Corps University Foundation. Murphy was chosen for his exemplary service and dedication to community, and the award honors his lifelong commitment to excellence in leadership and character, which reflects the history, traditions and ethos of the Marine Corps.
Major General John H. Russell, USMC, was the 16th Commandant of the Marine Corps. The Major General John H. Russell Leadership Award established in his honor is presented annually at a luncheon to a distinguished American whose commitment to personal and professional excellence embodies those qualities of leadership and character uniquely associated with the U.S. Marine Corps. Murphy will receive the award at the luncheon on Oct. 18, 2018 at The Union League Club in New York City.
In addition to his many endeavors, Murphy is chairman of Value Investors, Inc. a national real estate development and finance company. For over 20 years, the Murphy Family have been the majority owners of Value Express LLC, a mortgage origination and securitization entity.
Murphy was born and raised in the Inwood Section of Manhattan.His father, Michael, was from Dunworley, County Cork, and his mother, Mary Sullivan, was fromBallyporeen, County Tipperary.He attended Rice High School in Harlem, and subsequently Iona College—both were operated by The Congregation of Irish Christian Brothers.After one year at Iona, he joined the U.S.Marine Corps.
Murphy served as a Platoon Sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps, Fifth Marines, First Marine Division, from 1953-1956, in defense of United Nations positions in Korea. He remained in the Reserves until 1961. Subsequently, Murphy visited Afghanistan with General James L. Jones, Jr. USMC (Ret), Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commanding General of NATO, on a research mission to study the opium/heroin problem with the hope of finding a solution. Murphy assembled a team in Brussels to create a white paper, which was presented to General Jones, the DEA and NATO.
Following his military service, Murphy completed his undergraduate at Iona College and graduated with honors in 1959. He later attended the Graduate School of Business at New York University. Murphy received his CPA in public accounting and spent three years at Pannell, Kerr, Forster & Co. and six years at Price Waterhouse & Co. He was associated with Groupe Bruxelles Lambert (GBL), Belgium’s second-largest banking and investment company, from 1970-1990. Murphy was a director and member of the Executive Committee of GBL, president and CEO of the U.S. affiliate, Lambert Brussels Corporation after 1974. GBL invested in Drexel Burnham Lambert.
Murphy has been an active director of the Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation since 1997. He was a director of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation (Museum of the Marine Corps) in Quantico, Va. He was also a trustee, member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Investment Committee of the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas, and also served on the Board of the Marine Corps University Foundation. As treasurer emeritus, he received the Leonard F. Chapman medal for his service.
Murphy is chairman emeritus of the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Advisory Committee and a member of the Board and Executive Committee of the Columbia University Medical Center Board of Advisors. He was appointed by President George H.W. Bush as a member of the National Board of the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. He was a member of the Financial Advisory Board of the Congregation of Christian Brothers-Eastern American Province. He was a trustee and member of the Executive, Finance and Marketing Committees of Iona College for over 20 years, and is now trustee emeritus. Additionally, Murphy funded The Murphy Science and Technology Center, The Iona College Art Center, Christopher J. Murphy Auditorium and Mazzella Field named after the parents of his wife, JoAnn Murphy. He was a director and member of the Executive Committee of the Partnership for Quality Education, which was established in the Archdiocese of New York in 1998 by Cardinal John O’Connor. In 2004, Murphy was also a recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
As the chairman of the Board of Directors and chairman of the Executive Committee for Country Bank, Murphy has ensured the bank exemplifies solid corporate citizenship within the communities it serves: New York City, Riverdale, Woodlawn and Scarsdale. Country Bank fosters and values the spirit of volunteerism in its staff, and members of the Murphy Family have served on Board of Directors for many not-for-profit and charitable organizations. In 2016, the bank was awarded the Outstanding Corporate Philanthropy Award by the Association of Development Officers for its support of Westchester nonprofits and their causes. In June 2018, Country Bank received the Burke Award from Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in recognition of its longtime support of the medical institution as it continues to expand its excellence of healthcare to the New York community. The bank is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
Murphy and his wife JoAnn reside in Eastchester, N.Y. They have five children: Patricia, Joseph Jr., Christopher (deceased), Carolyn and Mary, and eight grandchildren.

Technology Turnaround Stories from Hawaii and California
All around the country, schools are turning around education through the use of technology. Here are two, one in Hawaii and one in California that show you steps that might work for you:
  Kalakaua Middle School leadership team gets into the spirit to boost positive behavior.
King David Kalakaua MS, Hawaii
When innovative school leaders decided to try a new technology program at King David Kalakaua Middle School this year, they hoped recognizing students’ good behavior would lessen their bad behavior. Their goal was to improve school climate and build positive relationships with everyone on campus by focusing on the positive. In less than six months, not only have they met that goal, but they also changed their peer’s perception of “trouble” students and helped boost grades.
“We feel like it’s had a major impact on students,” says MTSS Coordinator, Tiana Kamiko. She spearheaded the program with her fellow Behavioral Health Specialist Kristen Shimabukuro. “The campus itself feels happier. The kids are smiling more. Just the other day, we had a student telling Kristen that we’re part of the reason he likes to come to school now.”
The idea of rewarding students for positive behavior has a long history in schools, and numerous studies have shown the practice can improve student behavior, reduce suspensions, and even boost student achievement. It is, however, unusual for a school to see such a large jump in so many categories so quickly.
In Kalakaua, Kamiko and Shimabukuro took the lead in updating the school’s little-used paper reward system to an electronic version that rewards more students and offers everyone a chance to redeem prizes based on points they have earned.
The old system was a paper shuffle. Students would receive a paper ticket with their name on it for every positive deed a teacher recognized, from helping a classmate to always being prepared for class. Students would deposit their tickets in a big box and every week a few names would be drawn to win a prize, mostly snacks. “Universal recognition wasn’t happening. Some students’ tickets were never selected in the random drawing, so they were never recognized school-wide,” Kamiko says. “Many kids didn’t even turn in their tickets.”
This year, the MTSS/ PBIS team at Kalakaua decided to adopt technology from Hero K12, an online program where teachers can chart a wide variety of student behaviors, handing out points for everything from being prepared for school with supplies, assignments, uniform, and student ID (1 point) to going to an afterschool event (50 points). The school is even giving out extra Hero points for good grades with each A earning students 100 points. According to Kamiko, “by offering points for exemplary grades, we not only motivate students to pass all of their classes, but we motivate them to excel.” All staff members on campus can give and receive Hero points, from administration to office staff, from classroom teachers to education assistants, from custodial staff to security guards. This allows staff members to put themselves in their students’ shoes by experiencing the Hero program first-hand.
The big payoff for students is the ability to purchase items at a school store. In a school where the vast majority of students are economically disadvantaged, the store offers everything from school supplies and snacks to special school jackets and the biggest prize of all, the ability to reserve private time on the school’s basketball court. “It’s one of our biggest sellers,” Kamiko says, noting that students need 1,000 points to reserve time. “They have to work really hard to pay for that one.”

But the impact is going beyond numbers. Every week, Kalakaua’s Hero team highlights the top Heroes of the week, those students who earn the most points. Recently, a group of students with serious behavior issues topped the school’s list, surprising some of the staff. “It’s a huge milestone to get those students who have shown a history of negative behavior to do so well. It speaks a lot to what Kristen and I have been trying to push,” Kamiko says. In fact, there’s a group of students at the grade 6-8 school who are isolated from other students because of past misbehaviors. But these students have become the school’s best Hero helpers who set up and monitor the basketball court when a VIP session has been booked. “They are seen as positive role models,” she adds. “It has shifted a lot of the perceptions of them.”
Hero K12, a Miami Lakes, Florida, company, started in 2014 and now serves more than 1 million students in 43 states. Schools and districts can use the company’s software to set up their own program, calibrating not only what they choose to reward but also how many points to give each item. The program is used at locations from Indian Springs High School in San Bernardino, California, to Cedar Creek Middle School in Texas, and Lyons Creek Middle School in Florida.

Educators at Indian Springs High School in San Bernardino, California are running a similar program and have seen results on their campus. San Bernardino is one of the poorest cities in the country where violence is a regular part of life. Yet when the Hero school store opened for the first time at Indian Springs High School, 120 kids waited in line for 45 minutes to redeem their points for school gear. “It gave us a unified voice for how teachers were using PBIS,” says Chelsea Ramirez, the school’s PBIS coordinator. “So much of teaching is behavior and discipline. This helps teachers stay in a positive mindset.” The rewards, which included tickets for homecoming and school football games, “gave kids who would not typically be able to afford these events the ability to attend,” she adds. “They got to be part of their school’s culture.”
Back in Honolulu, the popularity of Hero threatened to overrun the school budget’s ability to purchase items for the school store. While the store started out with school supplies and snacks, it became apparent iTunes gift cards and more Kalakaua gear were coveted, Shimabukuro says. The team quickly realized they would need more money for the program. Their solution? Give students 100 points if they wrote a letter asking a local business to make a donation to the school. “The response from students was overwhelmingly positive,” Shimabukuro says. “We had a stack of 300 letters – that’s huge for our school.” The school has even created a GoFundMe page to try to raise enough money to sustain the school’s Hero store.  
The results are showing on students’ bottom lines as well. Comparing this year’s grades to last year’s shows that students went from 658 A’s to 745 A’s this year, with smaller jumps in students getting B’s and C’s. The positive results seem to be coming from every corner of the school.

The number of students who needed some type of extra support, from behavioral to social and emotional help, decreased this year from 101 students to just 62. “We do think Hero has had a large impact on the climate of our school as well as the behaviors of our students both inside and outside the classroom,” Shimabukuro says.
The rewards have even improved parents’ connection with the school, she adds. When students were offered 25 points for attending the school’s Open House with their parents, the number of attendees jumped well above the typical 40-50 parents who would show up, Kamiko says. “Our cafeteria was packed and there were even people standing along the edges of the room. That’s an incredible success for our school.” This program’s success and innovativeness would not have been possible without the strong leadership of Principal Lorelei Aiwohi, teachers, and each and every staff member on campus.

Dealing with behavior issues day in and day out is difficult when it feels like punishment is an educator’s only option. The school is even giving out extra Hero points for good grades with each A earning students 100 points. According to Kamiko, “by offering points for exemplary grades, we not only motivate students to pass all of their classes, but we motivate them to excel.” All staff members on campus can give and receive Hero points, from administration to office staff, from classroom teachers to education assistants, from custodial staff to security guards. This allows staff members to put themselves in their students’ shoes by experiencing the Hero program first-hand.
The big payoff for students is the ability to purchase items at a school store. In a school where the vast majority of students are economically disadvantaged, the store offers everything from school supplies and snacks to special school jackets and the biggest prize of all, the ability to reserve private time on the school’s basketball court. “It’s one of our biggest sellers,” Kamiko says, noting that students need 1,000 points to reserve time. “They have to work really hard to pay for that one.”

And that is the whole point. By noticing and rewarding students’ good behaviors, and enticing them to create good habits, Kamiko and Shimabukuro say the new program is succeeding quicker than they expected. More than 60 percent of the school’s sixth graders use the program regularly, according to a recent school survey. More than 500 of the school’s 1,200 students follow the school program on Instagram while 65 percent who answered the survey said they have purchased something from the Hero store.
But the impact is going beyond numbers. Every week, Kalakaua’s Hero team highlights the top Heroes of the week, those students who earn the most points. Recently, a group of students with serious behavior issues topped the school’s list, surprising some of the staff. “It’s a huge milestone to get those students who have shown a history of negative behavior to do so well. It speaks a lot to what Kristen and I have been trying to push,” Kamiko says. In fact, there’s a group of students at the grade 6-8 school who are isolated from other students because of past misbehaviors. But these students have become the school’s best Hero helpers who set up and monitor the basketball court when a VIP session has been booked. “They are seen as positive role models,” she adds. “It has shifted a lot of the perceptions of them.”
Hero K12, a Miami Lakes, Florida, company, started in 2014 and now serves more than 1 million students in 43 states. Schools and districts can use the company’s software to set up their own program, calibrating not only what they choose to reward but also how many points to give each item. The program is used at locations from Indian Springs High School in San Bernardino, California, to Cedar Creek Middle School in Texas, and Lyons Creek Middle School in Florida.

Educators at Indian Springs High School in San Bernardino, California are running a similar program and have seen results on their campus. San Bernardino is one of the poorest cities in the country where violence is a regular part of life. Yet when the Hero school store opened for the first time at Indian Springs High School, 120 kids waited in line for 45 minutes to redeem their points for school gear. “It gave us a unified voice for how teachers were using PBIS,” says Chelsea Ramirez, the school’s PBIS coordinator. “So much of teaching is behavior and discipline. This helps teachers stay in a positive mindset.” The rewards, which included tickets for homecoming and school football games, “gave kids who would not typically be able to afford these events the ability to attend,” she adds. “They got to be part of their school’s culture.”
Back in Honolulu, the popularity of Hero threatened to overrun the school budget’s ability to purchase items for the school store. While the store started out with school supplies and snacks, it became apparent iTunes gift cards and more Kalakaua gear were coveted, Shimabukuro says. The team quickly realized they would need more money for the program. Their solution? Give students 100 points if they wrote a letter asking a local business to make a donation to the school. “The response from students was overwhelmingly positive,” Shimabukuro says. “We had a stack of 300 letters – that’s huge for our school.” The school has even created a GoFundMe page to try to raise enough money to sustain the school’s Hero store.  
The results are showing on students’ bottom lines as well. Comparing this year’s grades to last year’s shows that students went from 658 A’s to 745 A’s this year, with smaller jumps in students getting B’s and C’s. The positive results seem to be coming from every corner of the school.

The number of students who needed some type of extra support, from behavioral to social and emotional help, decreased this year from 101 students to just 62. “We do think Hero has had a large impact on the climate of our school as well as the behaviors of our students both inside and outside the classroom,” Shimabukuro says.
The rewards have even improved parents’ connection with the school, she adds. When students were offered 25 points for attending the school’s Open House with their parents, the number of attendees jumped well above the typical 40-50 parents who would show up, Kamiko says. “Our cafeteria was packed and there were even people standing along the edges of the room. That’s an incredible success for our school.” This program’s success and innovativeness would not have been possible without the strong leadership of Principal Lorelei Aiwohi, teachers, and each and every staff member on campus.

Dealing with behavior issues day in and day out is difficult when it feels like punishment is an educator’s only option. Kalakaua Middle School and Indian Springs High School are proof that positive efforts can pay off big time. And they show positive behavior programs can implement real change across a school.

People, especially in Houston, should be reminded that their spineless President slashed the Federal National Flood Insurance program down his golden toilet!...not too long before the Flood!!
And to show America even more of his "Humility" and Compassion, this Bullshit Artist who promised Texas, the Greatest most Awesome re-building relief job in History...besides gutting Flood Insurance away from about 50-100,000 residents, he made FEMA Funding cuts, and cut $190 Million in funding the updates of Maps for Flood Prone Areas! $Millions$ which were also "reportedly" diverted from Texas' Flood Insurance to fund his damn wall!!! And to add to the nightmare…a toxic chemical gas plant explosion with toxic water merging into the flood. EPA? Nowhere in sight & very silent!
How more disgraceful and how much more dishonorable could a man who's the Leader of our Nation be with the American People?? And Trump? He only praises himself, what else!
In his 1st Visit, Trump couldn't be happier…Wow! What a Crowd, What an Audience!!...2nd visit, he got his hands dirty helping a little and physically touching someone with less $$$ than him in 50 years. It was your Standard "Concerned Look after a Disaster" Presidential Photo-op…and Melania? still with her damn Spike Stilettoes! Trip 2 Sound byte embarrassments? "Harvey has been a wonderful thing for Texas"…and "have a good time in the shelters, everybody"! This, to people who have just lost everything in their lives…their homes and their livelihood.
Many fine words of condolence, praise to Volunteers, thanks for all donations, and solidarity among Americans. Pretty sound-byte moments of Unity...but, at the end of the day? Where's the Beef!?!? . Where's that Relief Money? Where's that $$$ going to come from? Over a Hundred Thousand have either lost or severely damaged their homes, along with all their Life Belongings & Memories...and on some occasions...the loss of their families, and even their own Lives!!! How do you repair and rebuild, when the Government stops funding the Federal Flood Insurance Plan, to rebuild your home?? How do you re-built a City without proper funding? Dumping a seriously needed Program just because Obama initiated it, to spite him?? That's just Cruel & Evil! All arriving from across the United States, Canada....and yes! Mexico!!!! And in times of Grief and Despair, all Faiths truly perform their Services together, in the same Shelters...all praying side by side…Christians, Jews, Muslims, whatever your denomination is! And whatever Hate between the different Faiths? !s remarkably absent in times of Catastrophes!
Houston!! So much respect for your actions on Immigrants and ICE! The actions on the part of the Mayor and the Sheriff in Houston, shows the exemplary behavior all Law Enforcement Agencies are supposed to have! And to the Citizens of Houston and the Hundreds of boats!. Your collective moral responsibilities ...your Empathy, honorably opening your doors wide for Louisiana Survivors during Katrina, and now battling with your own Crisis. Stronger Together…your Serenity & Courage is a shining example of what makes America Great! The reminder of Catastrophes is in the stories of those who perish. Like the tragic drowning of a Houston Deputy Sheriff, a Hero, who drowned while saving people's lives...and Ironically, a Hero who was of Mexican Heritage. And a Dreamer also drowned rescuing survivors. Did anyone being saved ever give a damn who saved him or her? What ethnicity were they? what color?  Who refused a hand getting out of the water? What Racist or Bigot preferred to drown than be picked up by a Black, a Latino, an Asian, or a Muslim? None!!

The world of sports is a tough field to pursue at the best of times. All of the athletes on this list set goals and achieved them in an era when society made an awful deal about their race and gender. Those factors were used to shut them out of competitions, but in spite of the obstacles they faced they proved that nothing can douse their competitive spirit and love of their games. If these athletes had admitted defeat, where would the world of sports be today?
#1 Curt Flood Though St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Curt Flood lost a U.S. Supreme Court case against Major League Baseball in 1972, his actions ushered in the era of the free agent. Refusing to let the Cardinals trade him at the end of the 1969 season, Flood challenged the MLB about the reserve clause, which stipulated that a team owns a player for life until their release or trade. Flood was fully aware of the repercussions for his career, but knew the case would benefit other athletes. The lost Supreme Court case was not a lost cause, however. In 1976, through collective bargaining, two pitchers became free agents when they agreed to play one season with no contract. Flood overcame a rough post-baseball life of alcoholism, debt and a failed marriage to receive the NAACP Jackie Robinson Award in 1992.
#2 Joe Louis Joe Louis was the first African-American athlete to receive crossover appeal in mainstream America, earning reverence from black and white people alike. His astounding wins as a heavyweight champion got him the name “The Brown Bomber,” a man who, no matter what a boxing match or life threw at him, always rebounded. He even famously overcame his only boxing defeat with German fighter Max Schmeling in a much-publicized 1938 rematch. To many Americans, this rematch represented the United States overcoming Nazi Germany. Growing up in poverty, Louis started training at around 10 years old. Though he was the top boxing champion from 1937 to his 1949 retirement, Louis maintained his characteristic integrity, which instilled dignity in a sport long riddled with brutal violence and gambling.
#3 Billie Jean King With her tireless crusade for women’s equality in sports, Billie Jean King greatly leveled the playing field. She launched many organizations for women athletes including a sports magazine, a sports foundation and a professional women’s tour. Her numerous accomplishments include six Wimbledon singles championship wins. However, the turning point in her life and women’s sports was when she accepted a challenge to play against one-time Wimbledon champion Bobby Riggs. In 1973 at the Houston Astrodome, the 29-year-old King defeated 55-year-old Riggs in straight sets in what became known as the “Battle of the Sexes.”
#4 Jesse Owens The first American athlete to win four gold medals in one Olympics, Jesse Cleveland was born James Cleveland Owens in 1913. He became known as “Jesse Owens” instead of going by “J.C.” when a school teacher thought he said “Jesse” during a classroom roll call. Owens’ record-setting track and field career began in high school, when he set national records in the long jump and the 100 and 200-yard dashes. He shattered more track and field records while attending Ohio State University. The pinnacle of his career was the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, when he garnered four gold medals in track and field. Gerald R. Ford granted him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976. Owens died from lung cancer complications in 1980. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush awarded him the Congressional Gold Medal.
#5 Charlie Sifford In spite of his significant role in breaking the racial barrier in the Professional Golf Association (PGA), Charlie Sifford said he wasn’t trying to make a historical statement, but simply wanted to play the game he loves. “I just wanted to play golf, you know?” he told Fox Sports. “That’s all there was to it.” Sifford honed his golfing skills as a young caddy in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he practiced on the green after work. In 1952, Sifford received an invitation to play in the Phoenix Open after boxer Joe Louis passed on the invitation from the PGA. As an African-American in those days, he received much mistreatment during his career. Sifford’s career highlights include winning the UGA National Negro open five times prior to winning his first PGA Tour. He was the first black individual to get inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004.
#6 Althea Gibson Althea Gibson was an African-American woman who achieved greatness in not one, but two sports: tennis and golf. She found her athletic calling during a tough childhood, which she spent mostly in the Harlem area of New York City. Gibson won a college scholarship in sports after winning numerous tournaments and championships. She was the first black woman to be invited to compete in Wimbledon in 1951. She won the French Open in 1956 and Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles in 1957 and 1958. She became a tennis professional in 1959. Her brief professional golf career wasn’t as successful as her tennis career, but Gibson nevertheless broke racial and gender barriers in golf as well. After retirement, Gibson was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1971. She served as the New Jersey Commissioner of Athletics and a member of the governor’s council of fitness. Gibson died of respiratory failure in 2003.
#7 Frederick “Fritz” Pollard One of the first black trailblazers of professional football, Frederick Douglass “Fritz” Pollard established a series of firsts. He was the NFL’s first African-American coach and the first black person to play in the Rose Bowl (in 1915). This athletically gifted Chicagoan attended Brown University on a scholarship from the Rockefeller family in 1915. He played for the Akron Pros in the American Professional Football League (which was renamed the NFL in 1922) and won a championship for them in 1920. In 1921, Pollard became head coach while still playing pro. He coached NFL teams in Indiana and Milwaukee until the NFL segregated the organization in 1926. Pollard fought back against the NFL’s decision until 1937, when he retired to pursue a career in business. Though the NFL discontinued segregation in 1946, actual integration didn’t occur until 1962 when Bobby Mitchell signed on with the Washington Redskins. Pollard died in 1986. Three years later, Art Shell became the first black coach (for the Oakland Raiders) in the contemporary NFL. Pollard was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2005.
#8 Babe Didrikson Zaharias Babe Didrikson Zaharias defied traditional femininity and proved that women can make exceptional athletes. As “the World’s Greatest Woman Athlete,” Zaharias dominated tennis, track and field, basketball, golf and baseball. Born Mildred Ella Didrikson, Zaharias got the nickname “Babe” after baseball great Babe Ruth, reflecting her baseball abilities. Her participation in several sports at Beaumont High School in Beaumont, Texas was varied and exemplary. She won two gold medals and a silver medal in track and field at the 1932 Olympics. Though very athletically talented, it was said that golf was her sport. She won 82 tournaments, including amateur and professional, and was a founding member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association. She met her husband, professional wrestler George Zaharias, while playing golf; they married in 1938. She died from colon cancer in 1956 at age 45. Among Babe Didrikson Zaharias’s legacy are a museum dedicated to her in Beaumont and topping several greatest athlete lists in the media.
#9 Muhammad Ali Two major media outlets, the BBC and Sports Illustrated, named Ali Sportsman of the 20th Century. He was recognized as one of the most famous faces of the last century, and he made his personality — in which he famously boasted he could “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” — as big as his boxing skills. There has been no one like Muhammad Ali. Born Cassius Clay Jr. in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1942, Ali first trained as a boy after his bicycle got stolen and said he wanted to “whup” the thief. Five years later, in 1959, he became a Golden Gloves champion and an Olympic medalist in 1960. After the Olympics, he turned pro and was unbeatable throughout the 1960s, becoming the heavyweight champion of the world. In 1964, he adapted the name Muhammad Ali (“Praiseworthy One”) after joining the Nation of Islam. He cited his faith as the reason for refusing to fight in the Vietnam War; this decision stirred controversy that took a hit to his career. Making a comeback in 1970, Ali reclaimed victory in elaborately named matches set in exotic locations like the “Rumble in the Jungle” against George Foreman in Zaire and the “Thrilla in Manila” against Joe Frazier in the Philippines. He announced his retirement in 1981 after experiencing some defeats. Since then, the continuously active Ali has supported and donated to numerous charities and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.
#10 Jackie Robinson At the time Brooklyn Dodgers President Branch Rickey invited Jackie Robinson to join the Major League Baseball team in 1947, the MLB hadn’t had an African American play for it since its segregation in 1889. Jackie Robinson’s legendary decade-long baseball career included winning six pennants and one World Series Championship for his team. He was recognized as the National League Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player of the Year and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. Long after his death in 1972, Robinson has never left the American consciousness. The world honored him in 1997, the 50th anniversary of his signing with the Dodgers. He was featured on a commemorative stamp, was made the subject of a 2011 biopic starring Harrison Ford as Rickey and Chadwick Boseman as Robinson, and starred in a 2014 Mazda3 commercial, the greatest of all honors.

McAllen, Texas— For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community, McAllen Memorial High School’s student council has been awarded a 2017 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC).
“Receiving an NASC National Gold Council of Excellence Award reflects the highest dedication on the part of the school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program,” said Ann Postlewaite, National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) student programs director.
“NASC applauds the work of the National Gold Councils of Excellence and challenges them to continue their leadership and service to their schools and communities.”
“Our council has participated in many projects that have impacted our community.  We have strived to make a mark with our service and our leadership.  This recognition is proof of all the hard work that went into accomplishing that task”, said Fernanda Aguilera, Student Council President.
“It’s an honor to work with such a committed group of students.  These kids are a great example of true leadership and service.  I’m glad they get to reap the benefits of the projects they worked so hard to plan and execute”, said Valeria Carpenter, Student Council Co-Advisor.
To meet the requirements for the NASC National Council of Excellence Award, a student council must meet a variety of criteria. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process, and membership in NASC, councils demonstrate things such as leadership training for council members, teacher/staff appreciation activities, student recognition programs, school and community service projects, spirit activities, goal setting, financial planning, and active participation in state and national student council associations. Those councils awarded the gold level have successfully demonstrated the highest levels of leadership.
