Alright fine I’ll explain why I genuinely think Aaron was reclaiming fag in thank you for not moshing:
Well for starters, the song’s lyrics are satirical. He’s not actually saying he played football in high school and enjoys pushing people around for fun. Aaron’s essentially mocking those types of standoffish violent guys in this song. The people that were bullies in high school and continue that behavior later on in life at punk/ska shows. Not to mention the idea that at ska shows it’s primarily people who are regarded as outcasts and nerds who aren’t into the same culture as most people at punk shows are. People who don’t know how to mosh and end up getting shoved without their consent cos they didn’t know + dudes like this exist.
So what I’m saying is when Aaron says “look out fag, there’s gonna be a fight when I’m in the pit” he’s not using fag in a derogatory way or calling anyone in particular a faggot. Instead, he’s mocking every person who ever called HIM and the people he associates with(the kids coming getting shoved in the pit by this guy) a fag. He’s taking the word that got used to put him down and he’s using it to mock the people who throw it around to sound cooler and more intimidating.
Now sure, Aaron’s not a faggot and that’s fine. His orientation isn’t my problem. But the idea is that he’s had these words used against him, and the people around him have had these words used against them. The way he uses it in the song is a form of reclamation, taking all the insults used against him and mocking the people that said them. Because yeah, he’s not gay, but he’s definitely been called a fag and is able to reuse it as a way to say fuck you to everyone who’s called him that. Not to mention it was the 90s so pretty much everyone who didn’t fit in was being called slurs even if they weren’t gay.
