BAD thing about moving back home not including finding a car an apartment and a new phone number is finding a JOB. here are my options
entry-level admin/human resources job (over-qualified for this tbh but it's an easy office job)
bartender/waitress (tip money is tempting but customer service fatigues the brain whether u like it or not)
behavioral therapist/health technician (low pay, hard and sometimes dangerous work but looks good for applying to doctoral programs and it's more meaningful than sitting at a desk)

I’m in the middle of finding out if it was a) a bad idea or b) a terrible idea to agree to do 9 hours of one-on-one make-up class (3 hours per session) this week on top of 16 hours of regular class. The first session on Monday went better than I expected, so I was feeling optimistic. I keep writing and deleting rants about today. I did keep a reasonable composure (I think. I hope. I’m pretty sure I was visibly agitated in that first hour.) by going to watch the koi pond in the courtyard during breaks. I didn’t really have a deep appreciation for the utilitarian function of koi ponds before, but now I think I do. Tomorrow I won’t have time to go home and have a midday nap first because I have to go have yet another check-up with the surgeon, pray for me (or rather, for the teacher. tutor? random guy the school has hired for this ordeal? I have no idea who he is to be honest but if he asks me one more time “As an English teacher, what are your thoughts on ___?” I’m going to lose it.)  I have 30 hours of class to make up because of this break-scheduling snafu (I don’t even want to try to describe how all this came to pass, suffice to say both the organisation and communication at my language center are dreadfully lacking. Never a dull moment though.) I’m sure some day I’ll look back on this and laugh. Or, optimally, just forget about it entirely.

the other Tiffany Problem
I reblogged a post earlier about the OTW elections (AO3 is under their umbrella) that was warning folks about one of the candidates, Tiffany.
A lot of good points were made and I went and read the transcripts myself to get a better idea of the problem and then came back and read some of the comments being made on the post to get a feel for the situation on this side of things.
Most people are, IMO, understandably concerned about Tiffany and her viewpoint that “stricter guidelines” are needed on certain content. Some, however, are using her ESL status as an excuse and others are accusing the suspicious folks of racism because Tiffany is Chinese.
Personally speaking, I don’t care where Tiffany is from and I think she’s better in English than some native speakers I’ve encountered. What I DO care about is that she continuously refers to AO3 as hosting pedophilic content and cites it as the reason it was banned in China. Even after the moderator corrected her and said that there’s no pedophilia on AO3, she continued to hammer that point. She’s factually wrong and THAT is a problem.
Having a difference of opinion? Sure, that’s to be expected and getting multiple perspectives is almost always a good idea. Misrepresenting facts, however, is a different animal, and it’s a dangerous one. From the skimming I’ve done, AO3 wasn’t banned in China for hosting pedophilia (which, again, it DOES NOT DO), it’s a far more nebulous “sexual innuendo and explicit content.” Fictional underage sex might be included in that, but it isn’t the sole reason, and the general vibe I get is that it’s far more about queer content than anything else.
Tiffany’s stance seems to revolve almost entirely around this “pedophilia” accusation (again, WRONG) and her wanting to try and improve the Archive’s “public image.” As far as I’ve seen, the only issue AO3′s “public image” has is among the Purity Cult who are obsessed with anything they perceive as sexually immoral and use “pedophilia” as a rallying cry to try and arm folks with torches and pitchforks.
The thing is that AO3 already has policies in place forbidding shit like that. The TOS are publicly available and in plain speech, but the A.ntis don’t care because their definition of “pedophilia” isn’t the US legal definition, it’s an amorphous category that includes fictional depictions of sex/romance between two or more characters who have an age difference of 5+ years even when all of them are legal adults. Hells, even when there isn’t any sex it gets labeled as pedophilia because it’s such a triggery, meaning-laden word.
Or at least it used to be a meaningful word. The A.ntis have done their level best to make it meaningless by applying it to anything they don’t like in fanfiction/art. Which is a whole additional essay, TBH.
What it boils down to is that Tiffany is wrong. Not just “has a different opinion,” but WRONG. Fundamentally. And it isn’t a case of her not “understanding” English, because she has a damn good grasp on that.
Adding more language and clarification to the TOS would be fine, but it isn’t going to change how the Purity Cult views AO3 because they don’t care. Updating the TOS would require people to READ the TOS and those folks aren’t doing it. As for the tagging system, those tags already exist. Nothing additional is required. While some people don’t tag things properly, most do, especially for triggering content like that. And yes, even “Author chose not to use warnings” counts as a warning in itself.
I’d say the problem is less “people are being exposed to content they didn’t expect to see” and more “certain people with ulterior motives are specifically seeking out ‘dead dove: do not eat’ content and feigning shock when they find it.”
Hopefully once Tiffany’s been around longer her worldview will open up and she’ll realize how wrong she was to classify certain content on AO3 as pedophilia. Until then I don’t think she should hold any position on the OTW board.
It’s too late to join and vote in this year’s election, but those of you who are current members should pay close attention. Those who missed the deadline should consider joining (or rejoining) so we can add to the numbers keeping an eye on this situation.

I’m triggered because a few days ago I found out the worst news of my life. Ok I’m exaggerating I’m the queen of hyperbole but still I want to suicide 🤦🏻‍♀️ basically with my shitty English degree I still had one last cope and that was online ESL teaching.
So the story went like if you have any sort of bachelor’s degree + you do a quick cheapie online TEFL course you can make up to $2-3k a month teaching foreign language students online. It’s like a goldmine for lazy mfs and digital nomads who want to travel and make easy $$. Or it WAS
Up until Sept 2021 because that was the month where China banned online foreign tutors lmao! It was a multibillion dollar industry with hundreds of thousands of American, Canadian and European online teachers supporting their families with this income as they worked from home. Then it was wiped out overnight when China decided that they don’t want muh ~foreign influence~ in their country.. because it’s easier to abuse your citizens when they can’t communicate it I guess.
90%+ of the online English teaching industry was centred in China bc they were the only nation wealthy enough to pay decent wages to learn English and now. Thousands were left jobless as the TEFL market crashed and now some despos are reduced to -$10 an hour because they’re still thirsty to work from home and can’t cope that it’s over.
Anyways I’m stupid bc I didn’t check earlier did anyone even know about this lol? Now I’m fucked and have to do a shit waste of $$ course or get an in-person wageslaving gig kill me. But the point is damn they really want us to suffer huh there’s no escape except showing your asshole on onlyfans and don’t tell me to learn coding the field is already full of incels smarter than me and who has the time.

sooooo tired of scam calls, like...
"Heard you're going to California." "Hi, I'm Theresa, I have you in my contacts, but I forgot your name..." "Did you get my message from yesterday?" As a golden retriever soul i want to reply SO BAD but they're LYING and that's so ROTTEN i just have to squelch my friendliness and turn my heart to stone on the spot and become squidward like
Tumblr media
IT'S AGAINST MY NATURE AUGH!!!
And then, somehow I started getting them in Mandarin! "Hi, my old classmate! It's been so long since we've met! Do you have free time later?" (I did not go to school in China. I just happen to be studying Mandarin.) "Hi, my old friend! I heard you're in America, do you have time to catch up later?" (Also in Chinese. Just reiterating here I've never been to China to make all these "old friends".) The dishonesty is exhausting!
...although one time I did text back a Chinese scam caller (this was around the time I first started getting them in Chinese so I had thought it was one of my ESL friends) and we ended up chatting for 2 hours and became friends and she gave me a Chinese name so...
idk man. that one nice one aside i despise scamming as an attack on kindness and openness on the whole, how disgusting...

ESL phonics/grammar anon here - thanks for the quick history, really interesting! One thing that jumps out is how non-standardized basic education is in the US. So: my first language is actually Mandarin. Traditionally, learning to read Chinese does require hard memorizing many characters. (And some char's have components that combine to hint at how the overall thing is pronounced, but it's not 100%.) So in the 1910s, ed researchers and the Ministry of Ed of the newly formed Republic of (1/2)
(ESL anon 2/2) China created a phonetic annotation alphabet. It's meant to be written as small supertext next to each character (in children's books), that shows EXACTLY how the character is pronounced, no guesswork. This is still used in Taiwan today - it's how every kindergartener is taught how to read. Mainland China replaced it with a Roman alphabet based annotation system in the 50s, but the idea is the same. It's wild to think how generally handwavy US classrooms are about basic literacy!
wait ok so you're saying that the solution teachers in china & taiwan have devised to deal with the challenges of learning to read a non-phonetic alphabet is to........ create a phonetic system to use alongside it in teaching reading? cuz i legit was out here like "idk i guess there's maybe something different about the language structure or the way the characters are arranged that makes it easier [shrug]." but it really sounds like a hundred years ago some people were like "hm, getting children to learn to read by having them memorize a zillion characters is super fucking hard and is not going to be successful for most kids, it would make sense to break up language into sounds - something our longstanding current system has never done even though it's been good enough for the needs of a civilization that is like five thousand fucking years old - to make this process easier." literally i just saw someone on twitter snarkily respond to a pro-phonics thread like "how does anyone learn to read mandarin then." i am going to walk into the ocean.

If you don't mind me asking where are your parents from?
It's ok if you don't wanna answer this 😊
I don’t mind. My mom is from Cambodia and my dad is from Vietnam. They’re both Chinese but not born in China. My mom escaped communism in Cambodia and my dad fled Vietnam by boat because of the Vietnam War. They both came to the US as refugees and went to the same ESL (English as a Second Language) class and the rest is history. 😂
