After having received numerous complaints about missing valuables on board her Emirates flight from Melbourne to Dubai, crew manager Lucy Hargreaves eventually felt she had no choice but to seek permission from the captain for an emergency hand luggage search of all passengers in the section of the plane where the thefts had occurred. Lucy and her colleagues, stewardesses Elena Borsiovna and Helen Pryce, then undertook the search, asking passengers to pull out their luggage from their overhead compartments. “As you can imagine,” Lucy related later, “Elena, Helen and I soon became the three most unpopular women on board!” However, to their surprise, the flight attendants soon located many of the stolen items, all lying in bags that they quickly traced to four embarrassed looking male Chinese nationals. When confronted by the crew, the men initially claimed ignorance as to how the items got there, but their implausible story broke down when the women searched the group individually and found more stolen items on their persons.
“In all, we retrieved five laptops, seventeen debit cards, six watches and a bottle of whisky from their bags, plus cash and more cards when we searched them.” laughed Lucy. “It was quite a haul!” The passengers’ annoyance at the search soon dissipated when many of them had their stolen items returned to them by the crew. As for the thieves, they eventually confessed and surrendered to Lucy and her colleagues. The three stewardesses marched the despondent men to the rear of the plane where the women bound them securely, tying their hands behind their backs, and held them there, bound back to back in the aisle, for the remainder of the flight. The crew handed their prisoners over to Emirati police once the flight had landed at Dubai. The three heroines were later warmly thanked by passengers and the airline for their feat.
