It’s been five days since Dani has seen Eddie. Was she purposefully avoiding him? Maybe. But she truly needed to be able to think up an excuse for why she reacted the way she did when he told her he had a girl coming over. She also needed to think of a way to tell him about the woods.
Dani realizes she wasn’t very brave when it came down to it. She knew there was something of importance with those woods but she couldn't bring herself to check. She just wasn't ready, and who could blame her for that?
Jealousy was an evil monster that held her in its claws over the past few days. Every waking moment ate at her. There was no escape with sleeping though she knew if she could dream they would all be of Eddie and she wasnt sure if that would be a good thing or bad thing at this point.
After running from the dark creepy woods she made her way home. By the time she reached the trailer park it was late and dark and she avoided Eddie’s side of the park like a disease. She took a while to stare at the piles of empty beer cans that took up all of the living room and kitchen. She wondered how her dad was able to drive and function at work. She thinks that at this point that high amount of beer doesn’t even have an affect on him any more.
Dani found herself wondering who the girl was. Would it be a one night thing or a forever thing? Was she pretty? Would he fall in love with her and marry her some day? Dani cursed herself, she knew thats what Eddie deserved, a happy life. In no way would she be able to fit into the puzzle of the world any more. There was nowhere that she would ever truly belong. Maybe it had been like that even before she was dead.
Opting to stay away from her dads drinking pit, she spent more time in her room than she would like to. Glad that her father hadn't touched anything in here. She hadn't had the motivation to unpack when she got here. Bags and boxes still remained stacked in the corner of her room. The only thing showing that this room did in fact once belong to her was the picture of her and her mom she had set on her night stand the second she got here. The wooden frame housed a photo of her and her mother smiling during a summer break trip to the beach. Just before her mother had gotten ill. It was always a thought that maybe her mom knew something was wrong well before she told Dani.
The picture used to bring her comfort on the nights that she missed her mom the most but now in this room she couldn't stand to look at it, and the worst part was she couldn't even move it to a drawer. She wouldn’t be able to press her fingers against the cool glass in front of the picture and imagine that she was still there on the beach with her mom. Laughing and talking the day away. She couldn’t help but wonder if she went so long without talking if she would ever lose her voice.
Her bed was made, assuming that was the way she left it when she left. Dirty clothes sat in a laundry basket by her dresser. Plain white walls surrounded her feeling like a jail cell instead of a bedroom. Every night, Dani laid on that floor and felt like she was rotting. She came to terms that she would be the ghost that haunted trailer 34 forever. Doomed to watch Eddie move on from a distance. Doomed to see families come and go. Doomed to be the phantom imposing on their lives.
Dani thought that maybe she had heard Eddie calling for her every night. But she knew better than to expect that. How could she ever expect him to feel the same way she does about him. She was nothing, holding no more weight than a light spring breeze.
On the fourth night of her pity party, Dani couldn’t bear to stare at the walls anymore, Couldn’t bear to look at the picture on her night stand, couldn’t bear to be around her dad or look at the outcome of his alcoholism.
Laying on the yellow carpet of her bedroom floor, she closed her eyes and thought of the spot Eddie had taken her to at the lake. She could picture it so clearly in her mind, that relaxing place she had laughed and joked with him before everything between them went to shit.
Dani opened her eyes to find herself no longer lying on her bedroom floor but instead lying in the grass by the lake, exactly where she had been imagining. Well, that’s a new development, she thought.
Her first thought was to go to Eddies to tell him about the cool new thing she discovered she could do, but she didn’t think she could look him in the eye right now. Also, what if she was there. The thought made her stomach churn.
Dani sat up and stared over the lake. The sky grew darker and the stars started to make their appearance. She stared up at the stars that shone over the lake. Wispy clouds moving out of her way to provide a better view. The wind moved through the breeze like a song. In that moment, she knew that she was in love with Eddie Munson and that would be why she had to let him go.

It had been six days since Eddie had seen Dani.
Eddie didn’t want to walk back to that side of the trailer park ever again. He wanted to avoid anything that reminded him of her. He couldn't even go to his special spot on the lake because of the reminder of the time they had spent together.
But, he knew if he didn’t eventually take the trash out that Uncle Wayne would get pissed. So, he grabbed a pack of cigarettes and made the solemn walk to the dumpsters. He promised himself he wouldn't even look in the direction of the trailer. Wouldn’t hope to see movement in a window or the sound of her voice calling out for him as he walked past.
Humming and tapping a rhythm out on his leg with one hand and a bag of trash in the other, he made it to the dumpster without allowing himself a peek over at her trailer. That was, until movement caught the corner of his eye, and he turned his head out of habit.
There she was. He felt the breath woosh out of his longs in surprise and relief at the sight of her. She stood deathly still with her eyes focused on the ground. Eddie threw the trash in the bin and took a step to get a closer look.
There in the front lawn of her trailer was Dani, standing over a body.
“Dani?” Eddie said while stumbling towards her. “Dani, what happened?” As he got closer he realized the body that reeked of sweat and alcohol on the ground was her fathers. He was able to sigh a breath of relief when he saw that man was in fact still breathing.
Dani didn’t bother to look up at Eddie, too ashamed for him to see the sight before her. “He’s drunk. One of his bar buddies dropped him here a little bit ago.” She bit her lip like she was keeping herself from saying more as she continued to stare at the drunken man. “I guess they couldn’t be bothered to at least bring him inside.” She said darkly.
“Is the door unlocked?” Eddie asked. She gave a quick nod with out looking at him. Eddie went to open the trailer door and was able to prop it open with a heavy work boot that he had seen at the entrance. “What’s his name?”
“Thomas. But if you’re gonna pick him up don’t hurt yourself.”
“Don’t worry, I’m stronger than I look.” He laughed.
Dani didnt giggle or make any notion that she had heard him like he hoped.
“Thomas, hey man, you gotta get up.” He shook the man's arm, earning him some mumbled words. “Get up.” He said while pulling the man's arm. Surprisingly he was able to get him to his feet before guiding him through the front door and to the couch. Thomas was able to plop his full body on the couch before he started snoring.
Eddie was finally able to see the inside of the trailer that Dani had to spend most of her time at. Beer cans and trash littered nearly every surface. The strong smell of cigarette smoke and beer crowded the room. As he looked around the room he saw that Dani was still avoiding his eyes and looking away ashamed instead.
“Hey, we should go back to my place and talk.” He said softly nodding his head to the front door.
Dani let out a deep sigh and a small “okay” before walking to the door.
Dani couldnt bring herself to talk or look at him on the walk over to the trailer. Instead, she decided to find the dirt road beneath her feet utterly interesting. Even now, as they sat in the floor of his bedroom she looked at the carpet instead. After a long stretch of silence Eddie said, “I’m sorry, Dani.”
“Sorry for what Eddie? You can have a girl over if you want. You don't have to feel bad for not hanging out with me.” She mumbled.
“Dani, please, look at me.” He said.
She looked up to see two watery brown eyes staring back at her.
He continued, “I thought that maybe…I could get over how I feel about you if I moved on to some one else. And I’m not going to lie, yeah I made myself get excited over the thought of a girl coming over but you have to understand girls don’t ever like me. I was flattered and I thought that it would be a good way to protect my heart from you. It was a bad call and I am so sorry.”
“What do you mean when you say 'how you feel about me'?” Dani asked, confused.
“The way I feel for you means my heart is going to be ripped out when you leave me, Dani.” He hoped she understood what that meant.
“I feel the same way.” She whispered.
“These past few days have been hell, Dani. I thought you left with out saying goodbye.”
“No…I just needed some space to think. I’m not gong to lie though, I did consider staying away so you can live your life with out having an annoying ghost hanging around you.”
Eddie snorted at that. “You're my favorite annoying ghost though. I just wanted you to know I didn’t even let that girl inside the trailer. I immediately made her leave when she got here. Turns out it was all a joke anyways so.” He shrugged, pretending that it didn’t bother him.
“You dont have to explain yourself, Eddie.”
“But I want to.”

Over the next few hours they caught each other up on what they had done the past few days. It seemed that they had both been doing the same amount of moping. Dani learned that she was not hearing things when she thought she was imagining Eddie every night. And Eddie learned about Dani searching Andy's place, the weird feelings from the woods, and her new ghost teleportation trick. Eddie made her test that out by teleporting back and forth from the living room to the bedroom a few times. Each time he was just as amazed as the last.
“I’m telling you theres something weird about those woods. The feeling I got…was like my mind was telling me I needed to be in there. What if that's where my body is?” Dani asked eventually.
Eddie sat for a second. Staring at the wall. Dani realized he was starting at the poster board that he must have pinned back up before she had gotten there. Her heart swelled at the thought. Even though he thought she had moved on, he was still going to solve this for her.
“I’ll go look in the woods tomorrow.” He declared.
“Not by yourself you're not.” She exclaimed. “Look, if there is something in there I need to be there to see it too. It’s not like it can hurt me.”
Eddie sighed before nodding in agreement.

The next day Dani talked Eddie into going to school prior ot them searching the woods. He wanted to stay home, saying he wouldn't be able to concentrate knowing what they were looking for later, Dani reminded him it wouldn't be any different because it's not like he could usually concentrate at school on a normal day. He huffed at this but still agreed to go.
Dani told him where to park the van and agreed to meet him there after school. Eddie would leave school and head straight there. Parking his van on the edge of the winding road. He put on a brave face.
“You ready?” He asked with a grim look on his face.
“As ready as I’ll ever be.” She said before walking towards the woods.
Eddie, in all of his clumsy glory, had trouble maneuvering the steep shoulder and rocks that lined the road. Having to physically climb down to reach the woods.
After he slipped a few times, Dani decided if she wasn’t already dead then he would have given her a heart attack by now.
When they reached the spot she had seen the other day the feelings returned. Eddie must have understood what the look on her face meant as he gave her a small smile and head nod.
Stepping into the woods the feeling grew like a pressure beating down on her. “You alright?’ he asked her.
“Yeah it just gets worse the deeper in we go.” She whispered.
Eddie and Dani did their best to look through any bushes, both hopeful that with each search that they wouldn’t find anything mentally scarring. Eddie paused abruptly in front of Dani. “Wait, what's that.” He pointed towards a fallen tree branch. Dani squinted and could see something small and out of place on the forest ground. Eddie moved towards it.
“Wait no. I’ll look.” Dani said with a pointed look. Willing him to understand that if it was anything bad, she didn't want him to have to carry that memory with him for the rest of his life. Some things you just can not come back from.
Eddie gave her a worried look but didn’t argue with her as she stepped towards the object. As she got closer, the sunlight from the treetops reflected off of it. A small silver charm bracelet. Her silver charm bracelet. The bracelet with a little charm of a book on it. Her mother had given it to her as a gift. How could she have forgotten that?
Dani reached down instinctively and was surprised when her fingers connected with the cool metal and she was able to hold the bracelet in her hand. Immediately she felt whole again. She had found the thing she had been missing this whole time.
The second she clasped her fingers around it she was tossed into her memories, visions of that night flooded her mind, the sadness and the raw fear showed her everything she had forgotten. She blinked once more, returning to the trees and staring at a very confused Eddie.
She knew now why the woods carried such an awful feeling.
“We need to get out of the woods.”
