'The Women Could Fly is an absolute triumph....Giddings conjures up a world that feels familiar, despite the increasingly creepy hints of dystopia. And along the way, she shows what the anti-witch crusaders really fear most: our ability to create a better world if we work together.' — Charlie Jane Anders, @charliejaneanders Washington Post @washingtonpost Reposted from @never_withouta_book ⁣ A piercing dystopian novel about the unbreakable bond between a young woman and her mysterious mother, set in a world where witches are real and single women are closely monitored—a biting social commentary from the acclaimed author of Lakewood that speaks to our times. ⁣ Josephine Thomas has heard every possible explanation for her mother's disappearance. That she had been kidnapped. Murdered. That she assumed a new identity in order to start a new family. She was a witch, after all. This is the most concerning charge because, in a world where witches exist, unusual behavior raises suspicions, and a woman—particularly a Black woman—can find herself on trial for witchcraft. ⁣ Megan Giddings's powerful and timely novel explores the boundaries that women face—and the abilities they have to break through and transcend them.⁣ ⁣ Thank you, @amistadbooks @tlcbooktours for this gifted copy. ⁣ ⁣ #TheWomenCouldFly #MeganGiddings #witches #BlackWitches #dystopianlit #SistahScifi (at Mixed: Coffee and Community) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnuYptWJ4Hw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

✅ 21/52 - a book that became a film / tv show ✅ boning up on some quality #dystopianlit in an era that feels far too dystopian for my taste. Now, onto the #Hulu adaptation to while away these summer vacation hours #thehandmaidstale #margaretatwood #dystopia #52bookchallenge #readingisfundamental

We are so excited or today's Sistah Scifi Wine Down Wednesday!! @isisasare with discuss The Union with Leah Vernon @lvernon2000. Registration link in bio: @sistahscifi | www.sistahscifi.com Reposted from @find.tessa.reading 🟡 -The Union by Leah Vernon- QOTD: Do you read dystopian? What’s your favorite? Review- Did I ever mention I LOVE dystopian novels??? All joking aside, this one is spectacular! Leah Vernon has created a disturbing, sometimes incredibly graphic and brutal world that gripped me from the start. Was it hard to read sometimes? Yes. Was it uncomfortable? Yes. But it was WORTH IT! Sometimes a writer moves past creativity into a whole new realm of writing and Leah Vernon killed it. Thank you to @wunderbookspr for sending me a copy of the book! #TheUnionTour #TheUnion #LeahVernon #wunderbookspr #SistahScifi #dystopian #dystopianlit (at Sistah Scifi) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl4CvN0vw0E/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

What was your experience the first time you read Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents?  Parable of the Sower was an uplifting and powerful read for us. To see a young Black woman not only navigate but embrace change despite her disability - Lauren Olamina is diagnosed with hyper empathy - to help her community thrive was beautiful.  We rapidly drove into Parable of the Talents, thinking Earthseed made it to the promise land and this book will be a literary victory lap. We could not have been more wrong! Despite Olamina's harrowing journey, we see her dream of taking root among the stars 🌟 become a reality.  We agreed with Read With Jinger that Butler’s work is thought-provoking! Both Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents are available from Sistah Scifi! Link in bio: @sistahscifi | www.sistahscifi.com. Better yet, check them out from your local #library! First image reposted from @readwithjinger ✨Parable of the Sower✨ by Octavia E. Butler • 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I am not a big sci-fi fan, but Butler makes it impossible not to get immersed in her alternative dystopian reality. It is thought-provoking. I also enjoyed reading about a black female protagonist who isn't often represented in the sci-fi genre. The chaotic society has an uncanny similarity to what is happening in the present day (hence my t-shirt!). Particularly with the pandemic and current social justice movements. The desperation for a return for normalcy and the apparent suffering alluded to present struggles with civil rights, classism, and disparities in the health care system.  • Overall, this book took me on an imaginative and extraterrestrial journey. I recommend it regardless of if you are a sci-fi reader or not! • 🖋𝗙𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗼𝘁𝗲:  “There is no end To what a living world Will demand of you.”   Second image reposted from @octaviaebutler // @grandcentralpub Parable of the Sower with a foreword from N.K.
