[pericky; a look into ricky's head during their meeting.]
---
"I'm glad you came, I wasn't sure you would." The wine pours, the sound of it drowning out the missing word in that sentence: back.
Of course, is the response, and the part of Ricky that's spent twenty years tearing itself apart to understand why vibrates with relief. It doesn't matter anymore. Of course, of course, he thinks giddily along with the words. He never needed to wonder why Pericles wasn't coming back in the first place; he was always going to.
I'm happy you invited me, and of course he thinks again. A lifetime of pretending he wasn't always going to either falls away. However harsh and lonely the world has been, all's right with it again; and the shy voice of the boy inside him that he's tried so hard to kill says, so quietly, I missed you.
#sdmi#scooby doo: mystery incorporated#pericky#ricky owens#professor pericles#anyway fucking end me actually. lay me down to die#i said i was gonna write more pericky and by fucking god i did#the 'why did you do this to me' to 'oh thank god you didn't actually do this to me' pipeline of abuse folks 🥲#which like. their last conversation is yet another devastating example of ricky finally standing up to pericles' bullshit Too Late#ricky denounces him in the strongest terms he knows; based on his own feelings and opinions and the way he sees the world#(which: even then he can't bring himself to say 'i don't love you anymore')#(the closest he can get is 'i chose you and i can't take it back; the only way i can imagine not loving you is if i never had at all')#and pericles tries to go 'nyeh nyeh whatever i don't care' (and does a real bad job of pretending he is not obviously hurt lmao)#and ricky doesn't try to understand his logic; he doesn't try to reconcile a world where pericles didn't *really* mean to do anything wrong#his response is MAYBE YOU *SHOULD* CARE.#pericles' view of the world and what's right and acceptable are warped and *wrong* and he's the one who needs to get his shit together#'you shouldn't have abused me you shouldn't have killed cassidy you shouldn't have murdered a child in cold blood'#that is MASSIVE and i think it is really telling that pericles' response is to shut him down with force instead of trying to argue any more#and that in the end is the real true fucking tragedy of it all#ricky is making huge strides one after the other to take back his freedom from pericles emotionally#....and materially it makes no difference to improve his situation in the moment; because pericles doesn't have any less power to abuse him#he never has a triumphant moment where he Overcomes His Abuser and Breaks Out of His Control#there's nothing he can do to fight back until pericles is too Literally Dead to control him anymore#it is one of the rawest depictions of the reality of abuse i've ever seen and just. there is something very, very specific about the way shauna & nat understand each other. they've both done things that led to tragedy and because of that....things need to be worth it. shauna slept with jeff and jackie died over it (among other things). javi died in nat's place. shauna marries jeff because jackie dying needs to mean something so she'll mold herself into what jackie would have been. she doesn't get to move on. she stays right there where jackie is. nat and travis make a pact because javi dying has to be worth it. they keep falling back to each other because no one gets it like they do. travis asked for javi's help to save nat. javi screamed for nat's help to save him. nat let him die. that has to mean something. jackie dies and that has to be worth something.
they live while the people around them don't. they do the tasks no one wants, no one is grateful for, and they take the responsibility and the blame. they shoulder that shame. they get it.
do you still know how to do this?
she stared you in the eye and was going to pull the knife.

okay so here is my thing about r*nance. what i honestly loathe about the way the dynamic gets treated in the fandom is about how few people actually explore the, in my opinion, REALLY interesting stuff about them — primarily that this isn't an easy relationship for anyone involved lmao. too often fanon just throws robin & nancy together without any explanation whatsoever ( in favour of exploring steve & eddie which is fine, totally cool, you do you. but honestly robin & nancy in itself as a dynamic has so much baggage and history that is textually there in the canon and by waving it all away so easily so many people just WASTE that compelling potential ). a lot of people also just assume that robin & nancy would fit together easily which, if there's anything to observe about the way they interact in s4, is simply not the case lmao. they may be friends by the end of the season, but only friends in the superficial saving the world sort of way. nancy doesn't know robin is a lesbian, nancy doesn't know that robin used to be bffs with barb ( which isn't canon to the show, i know, but is imo a really good way of actually pushing these two closer together ), nancy also arguably doesn't know she's queer herself either — and i would argue that she would have the hardest journey out of those four ( robin, eddie, steve & nancy ) towards embracing her queerness because of the way that her arc is surrounded by heteronormative relationships with steve and then jonathan. and, something easily forgotten by the fandom, but she lives in the midwest in the 80s. nancy may want to break out of the suburban trappings of her parents' relationship, but she is still arguably trapped by them despite those attempts.
but, at its core with this dynamic, you have nancy, who i love, but is not the easiest of individuals ( embrace her flaws >:(((( ) and has a lot of issues and trauma surrounding not just her romantic relationships with the boys, but also the way that barb haunts her entire narrative. you have robin, who isn't even canonically out to anyone but steve yet, and struggles to even talk to her canon crush, vickie, let alone self-reflect on the fact that she may have a crush on nancy wheeler ( which, unpopular opinion, but i don't think she does during the s4 timeline ), who is the it girl of the show but also her best friend's ex. and then you have steve, an integral third part of this dynamic that should not be ignored, who has absolutely every right to feel weird about the concept of his best friend dating his ex — the same ex who, regardless of who you feel is at fault in the breakdown of the steve & nancy dynamic, canonically broke his heart.
a fundamental truth about this dynamic is that robin will not date nancy or act upon any hypothetical feelings unless steve is okay with it, and steve is fully entitled to not feel okay about it or at least have Something to say about it ( i hate when fanon just brushes over that tbh, stop invalidating steve's feelings, especially by using girl power as an excuse, i fucking hate it ) — at least at first. this is why i fully endorse the idea that the robin / nancy / steve trio should be about robin bringing steve & nancy together to a point where the two of them can resolve their issues and work towards a friendship, as that definitely needs to happen first before robin & nancy can even begin. robin will prioritise steve over everything, to her detriment or not — i do think the fandom's hesitance to explore things that would challenge robin & steve's friendship is a shame, because as with any sort of relationship, a friendship, even one as strong as theirs, is not a fixed thing. it will bend, it will encounter struggles, it will change and mature as the two of them get older. they will always be best friends, but the way they define themselves as best friends in middle of nowhere, indiana, location of their trauma where they only have each other for support, will be entirely different to how they define themselves as best friends 20 years down the line when they are living their best lives, both in relationships, steve with kids.
but back to the point: r*nance is arguably about steve & nancy figuring out their shit first. steve has to come to terms with nancy & robin being friends first — which admittedly he already was working towards in s4, his comment to nancy that it's cool that she and robin are friends now and that they should all hang out when jonathan comes to visit was cute!! and a step in the right direction!! i hate that the show then suddenly shifted gears and started pushing romantic st*ncy. but nancy also has a part to play, since i fully believe that if she were to ditch jonathan and then immediately jump in with robin, she will just end up in the same cycle that she was in when she left steve. before robin, nancy needs some time on her own to figure some stuff out. she needs an arc equivalent to steve's in s2 and 3 where she can figure out what is actually important to her — and part of that is having a friendship with robin, another girl her own age who she can have fun with and who can help her with her barb trauma. the friendship part is vitally important!!!! only then would she be ready for another romantic relationship imo, but then that can only happen after robin comes out to her as a lesbian. and, considering that to robin's eyes, nancy is probably one of the straightest girls out there lmao, that's also not gonna be an easy thing either.
so anyway my tl;dr; about this is just. robin & nancy as a romantic pairing won't be canon anyway, but even if there was the tiniest sliver of a chance that it will happen in s5, i wouldn't want it. because there is SO MUCH that could be ruined for all three characterisations here and considering the duffers reputation for writing romantic relationships ( is there a single canon romantic relationship in this show that i am invested in ? aside from joyce & hop idk jury's out. i'm even sceptical on robin & vickie ), i don't trust that it would be handled in the right way. this dynamic is difficult!!! it challenges everyone involved!! which doesn't make it bad — it actually makes it really compelling, imo, but fanon just throwing nancy & robin together because girls or because they've paired the boys off and need something to do with the girls without any real thought given to it is just.... i'm not a fan ( it's why i'm also not the biggest fan of the fruity four as a concept, another unpopular opinion lmao ).

the dynamic between billy and heather makes me INSANE because no matter how you like to see them — friends, dating, mortal enemies, barely knew each other before the Nonsense, the blood brother comradery of two people with registers next to each other during seasonal shopping — they have this undeniable powerful bond that literally no one else can match because of the flaying.
how extensive it is is up for debate but there is canonically some about of hivemind activity between all the flayed. we see things like the sauna test cause a reaction in mrs. driscoll and when el finds billy in the astral when he finds her location the flesh flayer instantly knows it too. so for a couple days there (at minimum depending on how you wanted to dick around with their shit post-s3) billy and heather’s brains were at minimum, next door neighbors with VERY thin walls.
like yes there’s all the obvious stuff they could connect over like the physical loss of control, the sense of violation, etc — all the kind of trauma that i think comes to people’s minds first and foremost when thinking about post-flaying billy or heather. but there’s also this whole aspect where like, for a few days there they were linked up with like 20-30 other people in the chatroom from hell and there was no mute button.
all the other flayed are dead, they’re the only ones left who lived through this. they’ve been exposed to each others core essences on a level no other human being can comprehend save maybe all the psychic types like el, kali and henry. but even then they’re psychics, they have some control over this and their experiences are totally different. heather and billy are like their own species now, the last two members of a dying race. they were normal kids, then they were part of something horrific but bigger, then they were tossed back into the ocean irrevocably changed. no matter how they feel about each other they’re the only ones who can Comprehend each other.

Alina re mal would take so many metas but I do want to point out that so many of her reactions are borne from jealousy and insecurity. Alina is in love with mal, but that is not why Alina is jealous of every girl that looks at him or the thought of mal looking at other people. Alina does not understand or believe that mal would do anything for her or loves her for her.
Mal says it's always you and me and Alina scoffs because she wants to believe it but can't. Mal means every word. He cannot imagine his life without Alina in it. He, in some ways, takes this for granted because he always assumes that Alina will be there.
Alina, however, has a poor sense of self worth. Years of being sickly and also being an orphan have made her defiant and it is difficult to trust. But they always felt like they fit with mal. Alina is terrified that Mal will find someone else and fall in love and have beautiful children, but it is not jealousy about Mal loving someone else so much as fear of losing mal. Alina is terrified that one day mal will leave and they will be left alone. Alina thinks mal can fit in anyone and misses the fact that mal always looks to see if Alina is responding the way he wants (is she smiling?is she laughing? Is she enjoying herself? Is she worried?)
They do not know what they would do without mal and truly believe that mal is waiting to leave them behind.

Doing some tab closing and I enjoyed this piece a lot; it has a clean thoroughness on investigating each of the different possible causes of the Baby Boom of the mid 20th century.
For those who don't know, the Baby Boom, despite what is often taught, probably had little to do directly with World War Two - it was not a phenomenon of soldiers "coming up" and releasing their pent-up baby-making drive. This is most easily proven by the fact that countries that didn't participate in the war had the same boom! And that the boom was already starting in the 1930's.
Its cause is still unproven, but the article makes a solid case for it primarily being a product of affordable housing (which itself is connected to WW2 in some ways) and more importantly medical technology, as maternal mortality declined between 1930 and 1960 by ~90%:
Tumblr media
Which is another classic case of the 'short' being made by time into the 'long' - most people probably think of safe pregnancy as this gradual process of improving sanitation & medical technology throughout the 19th and 20th century, but in fact the lion's share of the decline was the invention of antibiotics that could treat sepsis over the span of 20 years. The "price" of having a child, combined with the housing boom creating the space for it, induced a fertility bump.
The article ends by stating that these forces could, in some way, be reproduced - that if today you make pregnancy safer and childcare cheaper again, you can get a similar rise. I think this is the false, solutionist optimism that only a concluding paragraph can bring, however. For one, if that was the case, you think you would evidence along the income spectrum of that - for a 75% income band couple in Sweden or the US, housing is more plentiful then ever, and pregnancy safer than ever, but in the main fertility continues to decline across every band (the super-rich in some countries are a tiny exception).
But more importantly, I think it mistakes why this happened. If you portray it as a cost-benefit calculation, as "oh the price of kids is way down now, lets shift our consumption basket", then sure it sounds replicable. I don't think that is right, however - you should instead look at this as a cultural revolution induced by rapid change.
The role of women in the workplace & wider society was undergoing a ton of flux in this era, and it was in a period of "contestation" - these changes were not settled or agreed on by society at large. What a woman should "do" with her life was very open, and many factions still pushed for a form of family traditionalism. The counter-forces to that 'benefited' from things like maternal mortality as counter-arguments; women (and their husbands) both desired the old way but feared the price, one they no longer had to bear due to no longer being mass farmers. That was the equilibrium of the 1920's.
Then technology came along and throw the whole game into whack, changing the equilibrium. It was so rapid, so sudden, it induced a culture shift. You can metaphorically think of it as like a consumer rush, buying the hot new toy - in this case the hot new thing was safe pregnancy and houses to raise the kids in. Everyone wanted a piece of that *new* possible life, different from the old. It was, in a sense, a fad.
Which you cannot replicate - its done. We have the tech, we have the wealth, it didn't last. The culture shift that began of the 1960's was absolutely a response to new equilibrium of the 50's, its gender roles were never stable. Radical new technology (like exo-wombs) could change that, sure, create a new hotness. But 5% reductions in maternal mortality or slightly cheaper childcare won't cut it. It could shift the margins, but it can't make a boom.
Or so I predict at least. Its certainly hard to quantify that dynamic, but I think if you study how people saw themselves & family in that time, this comes out from the narratives of the time - with no equivalent today.

I see videos where celebs read tweets about themselves and I just-
Imagine dating Bakugou, the both of you working side by side at his self run agency and a TV show asks for the two of you to come onto a NFSW episode on their show where the two of you will be reading thirst posts about yourselves together-
You accepted the request happily and basically bullied him into doing it with you (The nudge from your PR manager helped a bit, but it was mostly you.)
So here you sat, scrolling through screenshots upon screenshots of thirst posts and responding to them aloud with a sly smile, and the occasional flex from Katsuki that he has in fact been "stepped on" by you as so many posts have begged you to do, when all of a sudden he reads off a very familiar username.
"This ones by 'Dyn@mite$€umDump47' and says-"
He's quickly interrupted by a surprised yelp from you as you snatch the tablet from his hand. "NO!" Everyone on set looks at you and you can feel your entire face heat up as you clear your throat. "I-I mean- We uhm, we dont need to read this one..."
You can practically hear the smirk in his tone as your boyfriend reaches across the couch to try and take it back from you. "Why not princess? Was this one you?"
"No-" Quickly moving the tablet out of his reach you frown at him. "You just dont need to read it."
"So it was you?"
"Was not!"
"That's fine- I'll get it out of you eventually Doll..-"
"Theres no need!" The host spoke up and you both looked up to the screen on the wall to see the tweet plastered on the screen. "It says, 'Thinking about being absolutely manhandled by ProHero Dynamite and letting him wrap his big ass hand around my throat until he has me seeing stars' followed by a bunch of hearts and- Oh? The next screenshot was a retweet by the same original poster that adds on 'But also thinking about sitting him down after a long day out in the field and overstimulating him until his thighs are shaking and hes crying, begging me to slow down'."
Katsuki is silent beside you as you let out an embarrassed squeak and hide behind the tablet in your hands, making no effort to defend yourself anymore because- How are you supposed to defend yourself from that on live TV?
You finally feel him shift beside you at the same time you work up the courage to lower the tablet so you can see only to find him leaning closer to you with a smirk.
"Katsuki please-"
"Didn't know you felt that way Doll- Coulda told me, yeah?"
"Oh my god- Katsuki!" Theres a whine to your tone as you shove the tablet into his chest. "Shut up! It was before I met you ok-"
"And yet you sti-"
"Katsuki!"

A mockup for what I'd want the digitized aesthetic of my new language Erelian to look like. It's a sister language to Collective Seraphic, both stemming from Aeonic Seraphic, and uses an evolved form of the Aeonic Seraphic script. This is definitely not the final look of the writing system, and I want to tweak some things here and there. It's a translation of article 1 of the UDHR, translation info below

49. Who hurt you? From the angst prompt list if you want to :3c
"Who hurt you?" - Lambden (of course 😁).
Lambert learns that some winters aren't as relaxing as others.
“Who hurt you?”
It was the first year they’d actually made plans to meet in the spring rather than just leaving it to chance when they’d run into each other and Lambert knew he’d failed to hide his surprise. Whilst he and his brothers always left the Keep looking and feeling well fed and well rested, Aiden looked very much the opposite. He should have only left the caravan behind three days ago and yet he looked the same as he had when they’d parted ways. Worse, even. Lambert would have just chalked it up to a bad winter until he noticed the bruises.
“Hmm? Oh, it’s nothing.”
“Those aren’t nothing Aiden, those are fucking finger marks! So I’ll ask again. Who hurt you?”
Aiden laughed. Actually laughed, “You’re sweet but it’s genuinely nothing. You know how it gets towards the end of winter.”
“No, I don’t.” Lambert had the sinking feeling they were reading from totally different books, nevermind from different pages.
“You know.” Aiden said as if he was trying to prompt a child, “Tensions are high, supplies are low...”
“So these are from your siblings?” Gods. How hard had they grabbed him if the marks were still there after at least three days?
Aiden blinked, his scent turning slightly impatient, “I’m starting to feel like whatever I say is going to be the wrong answer but, yes?” He rubbed at the bruises, suddenly self conscious under Lambert’s scrutiny, “Why are you so worked up about this anyway? It’s not like I haven’t had worse. I bet your brothers have left you with a few decent ones before now too.”
“Not outside of training and nothing like this.” He paused as he thought on what Aiden had said about supplies, letting his eyes move over his body and ignoring Aiden's suggestive smirk as he did, “Aiden, did you get these fighting over food?”
Aiden’s scent shifted to something close to shame, “Guxart rations it out but there’s always the dickheads who think they’re entitled to more than their share. You do what you have to.”
Lambert felt a wave of indignation and sympathy come over him. The winter months were supposed to be a break from fighting for survival. He was resting and enjoying all the perks Kaer Morhen had offer (however few they may be) and every year Aiden was probably worse of then he was on The Path.
“Don’t.” Aiden spat out, eyes turning flinty, “Don’t you dare fucking pity me. I know it’s fucked up, but it is what it is.”
“It shouldn’t be though!” Lambert spat, “You should be going back to somewhere that’s safe and instead, what, Guxart’s letting you beat the shit out of each other fighting over scraps?"
“It’s not his fault!” Aiden yelled, jabbing a finger in Lambert’s chest breathing hard through his nose, “You try looking out for upwards of twenty people when you’re constantly on the move. Good luck knowing exactly how many, it fluctuates every year, throughout the year. Barely staying in one place long enough to do any decent hunting, nowhere to properly store fresh shit where it won’t start turning after a couple of days. I know it’s not a patch on your Keep with your-your green houses and cellars and whatever the fuck else you have up there, but Dyn Marv is my home. And you don’t have the right to look down on it.”
He stormed past Lambert, muttering angrily under his breath and leaving the Wolf stood stunned in the middle of the road.
“Aiden.” He jogged after the other, who seemed determined to put as much distance between them as he could without breaking into a run, “Aiden, hold on a fucking second.”
“What?”
“You were right, I get it. As much as I hate Kaer Morhen...it might be a shit hole, but it’s my shit hole. I just-“
Aiden stopped, turning to look at him, “Just?”
“I worry about you.” Lambert muttered to his boots so quietly Aiden would have missed it if it weren’t for his Witcher hearing.
“Fucking softie.” Aiden teased lightly, leaning slightly and resting his forehead against Lambert’s shoulder, “I survived an entire childhood there, I can survive a few months out of the year. You really don’t need to worry.”
“I know I don’t. If you ever want a proper break though; Cat or no, Vesemir is too noble to toss someone out into the snow and to certain death. Plus, I just might behave myself if I have a friend to play with.”
The last part had the desired affect and Aiden smothered his laughter in Lambert’s armour, “I’ll definitely think about it.”
