she’s sitting on the edge of her bed, cellphone in hand. her little sister. iris - the only member of her family that was still talking to her, was on her way over - or at least, she was supposed to be. picking at her cuticles, aurora glances down at her cracked device, wondering if she’d misheard her when she spoke earlier that week.
she was doing better than she was this time last year, mostly sober ( save for the adderall she bought off that college student, he didn’t count ). she had a freaking job! granted, it was in a place where the devil wouldn’t go to make deals, a certified shit hole, but it gave her a bit of cash and she was at least off the streets.
huffing out a breath, she stopped fidgeting with her fingers and slid one of them across the broken screen, unlocking her device before searching in her contacts for iris' number. pressing the words ‘baby girl’, she sat, tapping her feet against the shag carpet in hopes that she would answer.
one, two, three rings. absolutely nothing. when the sound of the voicemail message hit aurora’s ears, she perked up for a second and left a jovial little message before hanging up the call and dropping the phone in her lap. maybe she had forgotten? maybe she had decided not to come?
rory didn’t want to let those thoughts invade her brain, and so she walked over to her bedside table and took a small swig of the travel size bottle of fireball that she keeps in her nightstand drawer. the burn is enough to cause her brain to refocus. she walks into the living room and turns on the television, hoping the mindless blathering of the news reporter is going to be enough background noise to drown out the depression that’s slowly seeping it’s way back in.
hours pass and there’s no word from little sister. no missed call, no text, nothing. aurora is starting to get worried, and she dials her number again. and again. and twice more before she’s just about to give up, when finally, the call is answered, but it’s not her little sister on the other line.
“this aurora?”
the voice is not one she recognizes, but they know her name, so she figures that it must be someone who knows at least of her - but that begs to ask the question, why is this person answering her sister’s cellphone?
“who the fuck’re you?” she says, her voice taking on a defensive tone, despite the monotone way the man speaks to her - she’s already on edge and it’s not doing anyone any favors.
“s’not important.”
“the fuck it’s not. where’s my girl. where's iris?”
there is a click of tongue against teeth, a short whistle before the sound of screaming in the background has aurora jumping up from the couch.
“you took something that didn’t belong to you. so. this is payback. consider this a….well let’s call it a friendly little warning. you wouldn’t want anything to happen to baby sis, now would you?”
before she can respond, the line goes dead. the audacity! so of course, she dials the number again, only to be met with the robotic voice telling her that the person on the other line wasn’t taking calls at this time. kicking over her coffee table, she watches as the half-eaten lo mein scatters across the carpet, and her cat running up to snatch a piece of chicken.
“fuck. fuck. fuck.”
she knows what she has to do - she has to call celeste. if anyone can find her - it’s her. pressing her palm into her ocular cavities, she sighs out loud. it takes her a few minutes to build up the courage to call.
this is life or death aurora. get your shit together and call her.
pressing her fingers to the touch screen keypad, she dials a familiar number not saved in her contacts and prays to god she’s not blocked on this number - because there’s no way she can go at this alone. eva doesn’t answer at first, and so she tries again, and when the sound of her sister’s annoyed voice rings true through the line, she starts to word vomit all over the place.
“they have her. they have iris. i don’t know who they are, but they do. i….need your help. for her sake, please. celeste please. she needs us....you...she needs you.”
