Wrinkly, your ghost-type Gym Leader for the Pokemon Trainer AU
Grandma has mcfuckin' arrived.
Wrinkly is the ghost-type specialist for the Unova region, and the leader of Aspertia City Gym, having served the longest out of any of the others. Her dual career as the local Trainer's School's headmaster may make her seem wise and intelligent---which, to be fair, is still true---but she can get very excited and talk non-stop for hours about pokemon of her specialty to anyone who will listen. Even with this, she encourages her students and challengers to meet and befriend all types of pokemon when on their journeys. She's hell-bent on ensuring trainers understand that their team is only as strong as their bond with their pokemon.
Wrinkly is a Unovan native, but also carries Sinnohan heritage. She may appear insistent about trying different paths when others try to choose for you, but this is because she's a firm believer in letting the trainer choose their own way as a result of experiences in her youth.
Her team consists of:
Hitoshi (Chandelure, male, Calm nature)
Anubus (Cofagrigus, male, Quirky nature)
James (Banette, male, Lax nature)
Kaiju (Drifblim, female, Bashful nature)
Daedalus (Ceruledge, male, Relaxed nature)
Boggy (Annihilape, male, Rash nature)
Some additional fun fact:
-Design inspirations take cues mostly from Wrinkly's appearance in DKC2 (or at least how I draw it), the various ghost-type specialists whose similarities can be summed up as either purple or skirts, and as far as I can recall she's one of maybe only two or three characters whose clothing took at least slight inspiration from pokemon of their typing.
-Similar to Swanky, I couldn't find a way to fit this and not ruin the flow of the paragraph, but she is also Diddy's great-grandmother.
-When she first became a gym leader and was offered the Trainer's School as her location, Wrinkly's immediate thought was to make it themed around a haunted school.
-She was quite the busy battler before becoming a gym leader! She earned the title of Unova's champion as a teenager and held it for three years, later beating the gym circuits of Galar, Sinnoh, and Kanto. Galar's major league is the only time she ever came close to entering another region's Hall of Fame.
-Wrinkly was the first design I drew for the current version of the AU! As a result, the way I presented her was a bit underdeveloped compared to everyone else despite following roughly the same outline, but we all know the hamster in my brain is always hitting the wheel when it comes to her, especially in AUs, so it worked out.
-Through the connection between her and her husband's occupations, Aspertia's Trainer's School and Pokemon Research Lab collaborate on certain lessons and events throughout the year to help build the students' pokemon studies.

Skurvy, your water-type Gym Leader for the Pokemon Trainer AU
Using characters from the cartoon was inevitable.
Quint Skurvy is Unova's own water-type gym leader, and the head of Humilau City Gym. Coming from a long line of gym leaders and whatever predecessor the position has all over the world, Skurvy is loud and brash, often boasting about his seafaring exploits to anyone who will listen. While what he's talking about usually is nothing to bat an eye at, others have noticed dangerous incidents taking place when he opts to go out at sea. The people of Humilau believe their gym leader to be just a prideful, if a little reckless, fisherman, but are certain he wouldn't harm anyone who doesn't deserve it... right?
Skurvy is originally from Kalos, but also carries heritage from Hoenn and Alola. He would like to go out to sea more often than he gets to, but understands why his duty locks him to the land more often than not.
His team consists of:
Undertow (Sharpedo, male, Adamant nature)
Iscan (Basculegion, male, Timid nature)
Aquanarius (Dondozo, female, Bashful nature)
Jolly (Cramorant, male, Sassy nature)
Crysta (Slowking, female, Impish nature)
Kremin (Seismitoad, male, Naughty nature)
Some additional fun facts:
-Design-wise, there aren't any inspirations from the main Pokemon games. Skurvy's whole being is "pirate", so there wasn't much to work with from DKC canon either. Trainer-wise, there's bits of Archie (pirate aesthetic) and Iscan (fisherman vibes) if you squint, but not much else. Any references I could have made to the cartoon or even DKC2 are seen more in his pokemon than anything else.
-He was ultimately picked among the remaining characters at my disposal because he had the most to work with. This is because he was, if I recall correctly, the next to last league-related character to be drawn up.
-When at sea, he tends to let all of his pokemon out of their balls for the duration of time they're not on land. The larger ones will ride along his boat while the others hang out onboard.
-Most tend to call Skurvy by his surname, but others will also call him Kanon from time to time, because when he sees a friend he will come barreling at them like a cannonball.
-He has a younger brother, but they were separated as children.

Cranky, your Pokemon Professor in the AU
:)
Cranky is the Unova region's pokemon professor, and Diddy's great-grandfather. He seems scary, and rightly has a reputation for being grouchy and hard to work with, but the right subjects being broached have been known to reveal soft spots in his demeanor. His method of introducing new trainers to their starter pokemon is a bit different than in other regions, as he does provide them with the option to receive a pokemon that is different from the standard starter set, and often times these pokemon were ones that had come into the lab as a result of wild pokemon that attached themselves to him due to some strange draw he has. Despite his exterior visage, he genuinely cares about pokemon and their well-being.
Cranky is originally from Kanto, but also has Kalosian ancestry. He originally arrived in Unova at 14 to stay with his uncle in order to try out the region's gym circuit, but his plans were slightly derailed when he met his future wife.
His team consists of:
Spectre (Gengar, female, Naughty nature)
Bramble (Leafeon, male, Serious nature)
Falkor (Drampa, male, Relaxed nature)
Pokey (Slowbro, female, Bold nature)
Ptah (Conkeldurr, male, Impish nature)
Pepper (Ninetails, female, Sassy nature)
Some additional fun facts:
-Design-wise, it's pretty much just his gijinka design with a different pair of shoes and the lab coat on top (it's giving DK64 energy VwV). Trainer-wise, I tried to give him mostly Professor Oak vibes, but upon reflection, there may be some Professor Rowan vibes in there too.
-Cranky once managed to convince someone he forgot his wife's name and had just been too afraid to ask what it was after all this time.
-If he's actually doing work in the Pokemon Lab, you can usually find a small or base-stage pokemon in his lap or on his shoulder. He claims it helps him concentrate.
-Spectre has been with him the longest out of any of the pokemon he's ever had or tended to. (In fact, she picked him.)
-His desire to ensure the well-being of pokemon usually results in him being followed home by them. This once resulted in Kyurem of all pokemon tailing him.
-Cranky keeps his fourth-wall-breaking abilities from the DKC games, but with a little twist. :)

Kairo, your fighting-type gym leader for the Pokemon Trainer AU
Oooh he ourple.
Kairo is the Unova region's fighting-type expert, and a master of martial arts in his own right, taking post in Opelucid City. He is very serious as a martial artist and pokemon trainer, having been trained under the same type experts from different parts of the world. Despite this, he is very encouraging to those he battles and always has wisdom to dispense, whether he emerges victorious from the fight or not. In addition to his duties as a gym leader, he also owns a dojo that trainers can visit to help up their pokemon's less stellar stats.
Kairo is a Unovan native, and has ancestry from all over the world. Although he enjoys martial arts, he prefers it more as a way to stay active, but will gladly instruct anyone who wishes to know it for self-defense.
His team consists of:
Taeko (Mienshao, female, Careful nature)
Lee (Throh, male, Relaxed nature)
Shu (Sawk, male, Jolly nature)
Ryu (Lucario, female, Bold nature)
Hugo (Hawlucha, male, Sassy nature)
Ripple (Poliwrath, male, Modest nature)
Some additional fun facts:
-Similar to other characters, Karate goes by a different name in the AU for simplicity... and also because it felt kind of weird for people to know his actual name while calling him something that deals with his profession outside of being a gym leader. While it was going to happen anyway, this change was not actually implemented until this posting. From my brief research, the name he uses here can mean either "victorious one" or "master" depending on the origin you're looking at.
-Of course his trainer inspirations are the various fighting-type experts over the course of the series. The appearance is mostly inspired by the clothing of various forms of martial arts.
-Karate/Kairo as the fighting-type gym leader was actually chosen by poll! He was up against the other three "kong" bosses from Jungle Beat, and is the only one who got more than one vote.
-I mentioned a really long time ago that there were three characters that I had to redraw. Karate/Kairo is one of them, being one of two that I drew but was unable to post before my computer went fucky-wucky in July 2022. His and Taeko's design here is mostly redrawn from what I remember of the original.
-He and Wrinkly were neighbors as children.
-The fighting-type experts he's trained under include Marshall of Unova's Elite Four (at least in regards to his youth) and Mustard of the Isle of Armor.
-Kairo is quite fond of bluk berries, so much so that he has a patch of plants of them that he grows himself. If he happens to find himself with an overabundance, he'll give the berries to his gym trainers or sell them to shops for a reasonable price despite their rarity in the region.

Funky, your transportation expert for the Pokemon Trainer AU
...Somehow, I don't have a witty comment for this one, but guarantee I am excited.
Funky is one of Diddy's uncles through his mother, and perhaps the one that dispenses some of the more graspable wisdom amidst the family. Unlike the others, he's not a part of the Unova league or even a renowned pokemon trainer in any form. He began his gym challenge much like his older siblings and father before him had, starry-eyed and excited for what awaited, but when he came to face his second gym, he suffered a devastating defeat. Although Funky's pokemon were able to be healed back to tip-top shape, the experience led to him resigning from the gym challenge altogether. As a result, he was encouraged to set his eyes on other pursuits.
Funky is a Unovan native, but has ancestry in too many regions to name here. He's been to all sorts of different regions, and in present day runs a business that provides both air and sea travel as well as a beachside shop for those hoping to take advantage of the endeavors Unova's coasts provide.
His team consists of:
Blaze (Growlithe, male, Relaxed nature)
Crush (Tirtouga, male, Lax nature)
Sage (Pansage, male, Docile nature)
Stripes (Basculin, female, Jolly nature)
Dewey (Ducklett, female, Hasty nature)
Caril (Ferroseed, female, Timid nature)
Some additional fun facts:
-Yes. The first three pokemon in his team are referencing exactly what you may be thinking.
-Design-wise, Funky mostly takes after his appearances in the DKC games. Trainer and character-wise, there's bits and pieces of Gym Leaders Marlon and Skyla as well as the male Swimmer class.
-Immediately following The Incident™, only one other person knew what happened simply because they were the only person Funky felt like he could tell. (It was DK.) Funky himself was the one who ultimately spilled the beans a few months later.
-Funky is the second youngest among his siblings. As a result, he may or may not have a mild case of middle-child syndrome, but he actively tries to avoid letting it spoil his relationship with his siblings and parents.
-Blaze was the only pokemon he had for the longest time. Stripes and Sage came along right before that fateful second gym battle, and Funky only gained the rest later on.
-The pokeball Funky has in his alternate artwork is my own interpretation of a modern jetball from Legends Arceus. We were in for a decently long line of regular pokeballs if I'd given him one too, so I wanted something that more signified his role as the regional transportation that could be used instead of just having the protagonists use fly. (Also I forgot the polka dots lmao.)
-When he was younger and still going to the Trainers School, he managed to convince his entire class that the Battle Subway was cursed while they were on a field trip there. He does not regret it to this day.

I know that was a lot, so have a lil extra piece of da family all happy :)
In the wake of everything, Diddy was often considered by both sides of his family as a victim of misfortune. Ten years on, the effect of their lives on those they knew can still be seen, especially in the ripples of unease their son finds while on his journey across Unova.
It's just a shame those ripples eventually became fissures.

Lily, Diddy's mother
Lily is also owned by @lady-zephyrine
Lily was the mother of Diddy (as well as the oldest of 5 siblings). A seasoned trainer in her own right, she was a kind soul who inherited her grandfather's way with pokemon, but was never afraid to play rough when the situation called for it, be it with the pokemon or their trainers. Her passion for pokemon and people lead to her pursuing a career as a pokemon ranger, tho she didn't feel like she had the time to delve into it as much as she would like after her son was born.
But... then Osprey disappeared. She made an arrangement with their neighbors---friends of theirs---to take care of Diddy as she assisted in the searches across the Slumbering Weald. Lily's prior experiences helped during the initial searches, when it had been at its most hectic. Six months would go by, and no one found anything more than his pokemon, and the searches slowed gradually.
So, Lily kept her arrangement with the neighbors, picking up jobs from the rangers to help keep them afloat. Her supervisors worried for her, and made sure she took time off so that she didn't run herself ragged and was able to see her child. While she heeded their words, she also occasionally used this time to comb the Slumbering Weald, trying desperately to find any trace of her husband.
On one such day, she dropped Diddy off and promised to be back in the morning. 24 hours came and went, and by midnight the following night, the police and the rangers had been notified. Like Osprey, her last traces were in the Slumbering Weald, but unlike him, she was found, even she had perished. No cause was ever found, not even a single scratch.
Lily was born in Unova, with a long list of ancestry in other regions, but moved to Hulbury in Galar just before marrying Osprey. Although she is gone, the tragedy of her and her family remain a haunting thought in the lives of the people who knew her.
Her team consisted of:
Daedrys (Hydreigon, male, Quirky nature)
Flora, (Lilligant, female, Hasty nature)
Aubrey (Tinkaton, female, Jolly nature)
Mintaka (Minior, yellow forme, Sassy nature)
Bacon (Centiskorch, male, Lax nature)
Gilgamesh (Samurott, female, Hardy nature)
Some additional fun facts:
-Her team was split across her parents, oldest brother, and grandfather after her passing. No matter who landed where, they are all well-taken care of and mostly happy.
-The eye highlight being missing from her alternate artwork was an unintentional mistake, but I think it adds a slight bit of symbolism.
-Lily would often take her youngest siblings to Route 16 just outside of Lostlorn Forest in Unova to watch wild pokemon. She would later do something similar in the Wild Area of Galar with Diddy.
-It wasn't uncommon for someone to refer to her as a petilil (as a child) or lilligant (as an adult), if only for how close her name was to them.
-Lily quite enjoyed cherri berries, and always had a vast stash of them on hand for both the paralysis status and to consume as a snack.

Osprey, Diddy's father
Osprey belongs to @lady-zephyrine :)
Osprey was the father of Diddy. A man with a love for flying and flying-types, he has often been described by those who knew him best as being surprisingly well-grounded in reality for someone who often had his head in the clouds. He worked for the Galar Taxi Company as a cabbie, but worked on the side as a bird-keeper as well. Osprey quite enjoyed both jobs, but especially the former as it allowed him to be in the sky with the birds while also making a living to help support his family.
He was making his way back from a drop-off in the Crown Tundra one rainy afternoon when he suddenly disappeared. The last trace of his phone was found in the Slumbering Weald, but despite countless searches, only his pokemon were ever found. Currently, they are being taken care of by his parents, and were reported by the neighbors as often crying out for their trainer in the months after his disappearance.
Osprey was a Galar native, having lived with his wife and son in Hulbury. Although searches for him have long since ended and life has gone on in the past ten years he is fondly remembered by the ones who knew him best.
His team consisted of:
Guile (Braviary, male, Adamant nature)
Arturia (Corviknight, female, Brave nature)
Zephyr (Aerodactyl, female, Impish nature)
Chocobo (Galarian Zapdos, Docile nature)
Kazooie (Cramorant, female, Naughty nature)
Dusk (Crobat, male, Bold nature)
Some additional fun facts:
-Yes. That pokeball in his alternate artwork is intentional. Tee hee. :)
-While he may not appear much in the main story, he does still have birdkeepers to thank as part of his trainer inspirations. The idea of him also being a taxi cabbie came later on, although his pre-existing outfit being a close match was a happy coincidence.
-To this day, no one is quite certain how he managed to catch Zapdos of all pokemon, but he treated them with as much love and care as he did the rest of his team.
-The wing Osprey is holding in his original artwork is supposed to be one of the feather held items. I think it's either specifically meant to be either the Swift Feather or Pretty Feather, I don't quite remember which.
-Osprey had a habit of picking up Wishing Stars when he came across them.

Dixie, your main rival for the Pokemon Trainer AU
I meant to upload this so much sooner, I swear.
Diddy’s best friend and self-proclaimed rival, Dixie is a teen of similar age who starts her journey across Unova with him. Unlike Diddy, her journey was delayed due to the wishes of her mother so she could help her younger sister if the need were ever to arise. Dixie doesn’t quite know what she wants to be to the world, but she has an interest in the functions of battle facilities outside of their region and has been studying them since she was a child. At the present moment, however, her current goal is just to see beyond the town they live in.
Dixie is an Alola native who came to the region with her mother and sister after her father sustained an injury that ultimately stole him from them. She wishes to see its shores again, but knows she will need patience in the mean time.
Her team consists of:
Cashew (Chimchar, female, Inpish nature)
Scruffy (Rockruff, male, Quirky nature)
Hermie (Dwebble, male, Brave nature)
Dandy (Swadloon, male, Relaxed nature)
Lum (Golett, Hardy nature)
Pip (Pidove, female, Modest nature)
Some additional fun facts:
-The differing appearances between initial artwork (left) and the alternate artwork (right) are part of exactly why the alt artworks are a thing, as it allows me to correct anything I was unhappy about with the initial design or to maybe make them seem more or less serious. In her case, it’s why her shirt is different between the two pieces.
-Aside from the few elements lifted from her canon designs, the only design influences present are from the various female protagonists over the course of Pokemon gens I thru VIII, particularly gen V.
-Dixie and Diddy meet on her first day attending Aspertia City’s Trainers School, where she chases off some kids bullying him by crab walking really fast towards them.
-Speaking of crabs, Hermie the dwebble was originally part of an alternate team she has set up that was nothing but crab-like pokemon, but she swapped the places of him and another pokemon, a steenee name Cherry, on either team.
-As she wins each gym badge, she pins them to her hat.
-Dixie’s interest in battle facilities has lead some to ask if she’d consider working in one as a battle facility trainer as a potential future job, but it remains to be seen if she winds up in one.

Diddy, your protagonist for the Pokemon Trainer AU
It’s finally here, after I’ve forgotten about posting it for a while now! It’s time to start learning about the Pokemon Trainer AU for Donkey Kong Country.
A boy of fourteen living in Aspertia City, Diddy starts his adventure late by most people’s standards (tho in line with how the games seems to have gone from gen V onwards). This was in part due to his uncertainty of the path he wanted to take in the world of Pokemon. Most of those in his surrounding family tend to be competitive battlers, either Unova League trainers or Battle Subway trainers, and he feels they would be unhappy if he didn’t follow in their footsteps. He’s always being told the journey is more about exploring the region and making his own mark on the world, but it’s a worry that won’t leave him for quite some time.
Diddy is originally from Galar, but lost both of his parents to the Slumbering Weald when he was rather young. As a result, he was placed in the care of his mother’s family in Unova. He still travels to Galar for at least a few months out of the year to visit with the family and friends from his father’s side.
His team consists of:
Mirage (Zorua, male, Relaxed nature)
Ain (Aipom, female, Sassy nature)
Etoile (Staravia, female, Bold nature)
Cygnus (Minior, blue forme, Quirky nature)
Dinraal (Charcadet, male, Brave nature)
Cascade (Panpour, male, Impish nature)
Some additonal fun facts:
-Diddy’s AU design incorporates parts of his look in the DKC games (mostly his hat and stars), but his look here does also take some cues from a trainer card I made for him in Sword and Shield. It also takes some inspiration from the various male Pokemon game protagonists over the years.
-His necklace is supposed to be a star piece! I like to think Funky gave it to him.
-He didn’t really talk much following his initial departure from Galar. To this day, no one is certain whether it was the loss of his parents so close to one another or how quickly he was uprooted and placed into Unova.
-Despite Ain being pictured with him here, Mirage is actually his first/main. The zorua was initially a temporary solution to keep him company one day in the Pokemon Lab, but the creature was ultimately given to him to help him feel less alone. (Ain is given to him later as an egg.)

Tiny, your fourth rival for the Pokemon Trainer AU
It her :)
Three years younger than her older sister Dixie, Tiny is very much the baby of their group. While she was very much wanting to experience her journey on her own, she obeys her mother and sticks with Dixie... for the most part. She isn't quite sure yet what she wants to do, but she's intending to take at least part of the gym challenge like the others until she does. Although, if she were forced to admit it, she has been eyeing the contest halls...
Tiny is an Alola native who moved with her sister and mother to the region after her father's passing. She doesn't have many clear memories of the region because of her age when she left, but hopes to go back some day.
Her team consists of:
Bolt (Pichu, male, Jolly nature)
Posie (Comfey, male, Gentle nature)
Chime (Chingling, female, Quiet nature)
Lily (Petilil, female, Careful nature)
Lady (Lillipup, female, Calm nature)
Wizgig (Klink, Mild nature)
Some additional fun facts:
-Tiny's design is based almost entirely off her DK64 attire, with some minor alternations to fit in with Pokemon protagonists (mostly the symbol on her hat). Aside from this, she has no main trainer basis aside from maybe a splash of Rosa.
-When not hanging around Dixie and Diddy, she tends to split off to travel with Chunky and Lanky.
-Another case of someone pictured with their "starter" pokemon rather than their first: in this case, it's Bolt rather than Posie.
-A certain aspect of her alternative art makes her look a bit older than intended. She's very much 11.
-Tiny once was grounded and had the charging cord to a handheld game console she had taken from her as a result so she used Bolt to charge it in secret. How the system never blew up or was otherwise destroyed as a result of this is anyone's guess.

Chunky, your third rival for the Pokemon Trainer AU
Ahh, finally! Time to introduce the feller :3
Chunky is the timid but soft-natured cousin of Dixie and Tiny. He sets out on a journey through the region at the same time as them in an attempt to make sure they stay safe. The recent attacks of Team Void worry him to the point he's afraid of staying in one place other than his home for too long, but he knows he can't let that fear stop him. Despite this, aims to protect the people and pokemon he cares about if he can and always shows up prepared for whatever needs his friends have.
Chunky was born in Unova, but both of his parents are Alolan. He became something of a brother figure to his cousins when they came to live with him after his uncle's passing, and likes hearing Dixie talk about what she remembers of Alola.
His team consists of:
Skippy (Jumpluff, male, Brave nature)
Roxie (Whismur, male, Bold nature)
Skurmp (Silcoon, male, Sassy nature)
Downy (Cottonee, male, Naughty nature)
Gasper (Trubbish, female, Jolly nature)
Cobbler (Applin, female, Hasty nature)
Some additional fun facts:
-Due to living in different regions, Chunky actually didn't know his cousins that well until they moved in, having only met them in-person a handful of times. Despite this, they quickly bonded afterward.
-Chunky's design is lifted almost verbatim from how I drew him gijinka when I was younger, in combination with some old trainer cards I made in SwSh a couple of years ago. As for trainer basis, there's a tiny bit of Bianca if you squint.
-His younger brother Kiddy does still exist in this AU! However, he has just started in the Pokemon Trainer School when the main story begins, and likely won't make very many physical appearances.
-He and Lanky are actually really good friends, and benefit each other greatly in their leg of the journey with their respective knowledge and supplies.
-Chunky carries many items on him at any given time. No one is quite sure how he keeps so many things in one small backpack, but their relief at the convenience usually tends to overshadow the confusion.
-Chunky and Diddy knew each other before Dixie and Tiny arrived in Unova by virtue of being classmates, but didn't really interact much until Diddy and Dixie became friends.
