Monday, December 4: Fear Factory, "Virus of Faith"
The Industrialist was a bridge too far for Fear Factory, the record where Burton C. Bell and Dino Cazares followed the band’s whole conceit past its logical endpoint and painted themselves into a corner they were never really able to escape. It wasn’t entirely a bad record, as numbers like the title track and “Virus of Faith” sounded completely natural and leaned in on the duo’s individual and collective strengths. But for arguably the first time, this felt like Fear Factory by numbers, and the absence of a proper drummer was one of those nuances that, for this enterprise, may not have initially seemed like a big deal, but ultimately stripped away a lot of personality.

Fear Factory “Recoded” (Adapt or Die) DJ Special – DJ Zardonic
When the worlds of drum and bass and heavy metal collide, you’ll find DJ Zardonic at ground zero of a high energy impact point. Born in Venezuela and currently based in Germany, the artist and sound engineer blends genres whether it’s his own music or remixes; either way the passion is very much real. An excellent example of cross-genre energy and pushing the boundaries of artistry. Not to…

Wednesday, January 18: Fear Factory, “Terminate”
“Terminate” was the last thing Fear Factory’s classic lineup recorded together, surfacing on the Hatefiles odds-and-ends compilation put out by Roadrunner as a contractual obligation during their brief breakup. And while it found the band in diminished state, the track managed to capture and distill the distinct attributes that made them a force in metal; if anything, it homed in on each member’s abilities by stripping out keyboards and production flourishes and locking in on Dino Cazares’ precise and serrated riffing, Raymond Herrera’s jackhammer on cinders drumming and Christian Olde Wolbers’ thick bottom end. Burton C. Bell’s vocals weren’t quite as stirring as usual, but his bark remained forceful and compelling. “Terminate” still had the feeling of compromise that permeated Digimortal, but it showed that when Fear Factory hunkered down and got to work, the results were still strong.
