Why despite owning valuable trade assets, the Bulls dealing for Anthony Davis is unlikely
Why despite owning valuable trade assets, the Bulls dealing for Anthony Davis is unlikely originally appeared on nbcsportschicago.com
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski dropped one of his biggest bombs to date on Monday morning when he reported that Pelicans All-Star Anthony Davis wants out of New Orleans. His agent Rich Paul reportedly told the Pelicans that Davis is requesting a trade and has no intention of re-signing with the team in 2020.
Davis, who is currently out with a finger injury, is averaging a career-high 29.3 points and 13.3 rebounds this season. He's been named an All-Star in each of the last five seasons and has been an All-NBA First Team member three of the last four seasons. He's one of the most valuable trade chips in the NBA at just 25 years old and will command a steep price for whichever team wants to deal for him.
Wojnarowski reported that Davis wants to play for a winner after suffering through five losing seasons and just one playoff series win in New Orleans.
Before getting into trade packages and which teams can offer the Pelicans the most, it's important to understand this: the Pelicans are only trading Davis to a team that he will sign an extension with, because it's an almost guarantee that no team is trading for Davis without a long-term commitment from the 25-year-old. Davis is eligible to sign a five-year, $240 million extension this summer.
This isn't the Timberwolves trading for Jimmy Butler or the Thunder trading for Paul George or the Raptors trading for Kawhi Leonard. Given the assets that will be needed to acquire one of the game's best players just about to enter his prime, it's incredibly unlikely a franchise is going to package together their most valuable assets just to see Davis leave in free agency in the summer of 2020.
Because of that, the leader for Davis' services right now has to be the Los Angeles Lakers. For starters, Davis wants to win and the Lakers employ LeBron James. Davis and James share an agent in Rich Paul, which makes the courtship even more likely. What's more, the Lakers have been stockpiling young assets the last five seasons, and while none of them are can't miss, home run prospects, they're certainly good enough to entice New Orleans.
A combination of Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Ivica Zubac and Brandon Ingram would be a starter in any deal, and the Lakers also have all future draft picks, for whatever that's worth.
Next in line is the Celtics, a team that was hoping these trade discussions would stay dormant until the summer. That's when Kyrie Irving can opt out of his contract and become a free agent. Both Irving and Davis signed their current contracts under the Rose Rule, named after Derrick Rose hat allows a player to make 30 percent of a team's salary cap if he's a two-time All-Star, two-time All-NBA player or an MVP. Teams are only allowed to have one "Rose Rule" contract, meaning Irving and Davis can't play for the same team this season. Put a different way: any deal between the Celtics and Pelicans before July 1 would need to include Irving, and that seems highly unlikely to happen.
If the Pelicans do stand their ground and wait until the offseason, Boston's surplus of young assets would be enticing. Jayson Tatum has future All-Star written all over him, while Jaylen Brown, Terry Rozier and, to a lesser degree, Robert Williams and Semi Ojeleye are potential pieces.
The real kicker is Boston's embarrassment of draft picks: the Celtics have three first round picks in the 2019 NBA Draft (their own, Sacramento's and the Clippers') and a future first round pick from Memphis that is top-8 protected this year, top-6 protected in 2020 and unprotected in 2021. With the Grizzlies about to enter a rebuild that pick could be among the highest in 2021, when high-school prospects may be able to bypass college and enter the league, creating a Super-Draft.
Then there's the Bulls. Any deal for Davis begins with Lauri Markkanen, by far the Bulls' best asset. Beyond him, their 2019 draft pick could yield a franchise-changing player in Zion Williamson or R.J. Barrett. That's why the Bulls should also be hoping that no deal gets done before the Feb. 7 trade deadline; the Bulls' offer gets substantially better on May 14 when the Draft Lottery occurs (or worse if the ping pong balls bounce the wrong way).
Story continues
Beyond that, Wendell Carter Jr., Zach LaVine and Kris Dunn are also potential pieces to include in the deal. The Pelicans could have their choice of going super young with Carter included in the deal, or taking a more sure bet in LaVine to pair with Jrue Holiday in the backcourt. Dunn has had his struggles in Chicago but is still three years removed from being a top-5 pick. Either way, they're the smaller pieces of a potential deal after Markkanen and the 2019 first-round pick.
But remember that small caveat? That Davis is only going to sign an extension with a team he feels he can win a title? That could be a real issue. Aside from the fact that Davis reportedly has no desire to play in Chicago, whatever package the Bulls put together is going to decimate their roster. They've won 11 games this season and just finished off a week in which they lost to the Hawks and Cavaliers at home.
Yes, they have intriguing young pieces who could form a nice core. But their supporting cast is one of the weakest and shallowest in the league; dealing for Davis while including a combination of Markkanen, Carter and LaVine (plus the 2019 first round pick) guts the Bulls roster. It turns them into the current Pelicans team, middling below .500, lost without Davis in the lineup and going nowhere fast. There's little reason for Davis to believe the Bulls would be capable of building the same kind of winner he'd find in L.A. with LeBron or in Boston with a perennial winner and one of the game's best head coach.
Because of all that, despite what the Bulls could potentially offer in a deal, it's unlikely it happens. There's always a chance that John Paxson and Gar Forman decide to roll the dice and deal for Davis without the guarantee that he re-signs.
But even that feels a little too far-fetched, especially after they watched that same strategy backfire from the other side of the fence two years ago with the Timberwolves and Jimmy Butler. The assets needed to deal for Davis would be even larger, meaning the loss would be even greater if the Chicago native walked and the Bulls were forced to sell for fewer cents on the dollar than they acquired him for.

The method is based in the philosophy that a dog acts on its right to choose its actions. Koehler explained that a dog’s learned behavior is an act of choice based on its own learning experience. When those choices are influenced by the expectation of reward, the behavior will most likely be repeated, and when those choices are influenced by the anticipation of punishment, they will most likely cease. Once the dog has learned that its choices result in comfort or discomfort it can be taught to make the correct decisions. Action→Memory→Desire encapsulates the learning pattern used by the method; the dog acts, remembers the consequences, and forms the desire to repeat or avoid those consequences. Adherents believe that once the behavior has been correctly taught, it should be performed, thus making any correction, fair, reasonable, and expected.[57] While the model has been used consistently since 1962, some of the punishment procedures described in the book are now not considered necessary, humane, or appropriate by many trainers.[23] Bath Time K9 Advantix CancelReport Not Enabled Dog Training Collar Seattle Sounders FC To start, get on your puppy’s level, either crouching/kneeling on the floor or sitting in a chair beside her. Protests block streets after funeral for man shot by police
SACRAMENTO, Calif. /March 29, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) — A standing-room-only crowd packed into a church Thursday to celebrate the life of a 22-year-old black man who was shot to death by Sacramento police, prompting angry protests in California’s capital city and a resolve to force changes in police departments around the country.
The musical and scriptural celebration of Stephon Clark’s life was interrupted by his emotional brother Stevante, who hugged and kissed the casket, led the crowd in chanting his brother’s name, pounded his chest and shouted. Others on the stage attempted to calm him, with limited success.
The Rev. Al Sharpton hugged and consoled him and told the crowd not to judge how families grieve.
“This brother could be any one of us, so let them express and grieve,” Sharpton said as he delivered the eulogy with Stevante Clark clutching him around the neck. “We are proud of them for standing up for justice.”
Later Thursday, about 100 protesters blocked downtown streets for the third day in a row during rush hour but did not prevent fans from entering a Sacramento Kings NBA game at a downtown arena as they had during two previous games. Stevante Clark had asked protesters not to block the game.
Security was heavy outside, with police standing in riot gear and fans entering through heavy fencing and metal detectors. The game between the Kings and Indiana Pacers began without disruption.
Clark was killed March 18 by two Sacramento police officers responding to a report of someone breaking car windows. Video of the nighttime incident released by police shows a man later identified as Clark running into the backyard of his grandparent’s home where police fired 20 rounds at him after screaming “gun, gun, gun.”
It turned out Clark was holding a cellphone.
About 500 people attended the funeral, where friends and family shared memories of Stephon Clark’s “keen dancing ability,” sense of humor and smarts, and his desire to be a good father to his two young sons.  Speakers frequently started call-and-response chants of “I am … Stephon Clark.”
Clark’s name has been a rallying cry at protests and calls for police reform in California and beyond. Families of people killed by police marched Thursday in Compton, calling for more transparency in use-of-force investigations, and the night before a small group of protesters gathered in New York City.
In Sacramento, Sharpton and others chastised President Donald Trump for failing to comment on police shootings of young black men. On Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders was asked about the Clark shooting and demurred, referring to it as a local issue.
“That is a systemic problem, not a local problem,” said Zaid Shakir, a prominent California imam and former spiritual adviser to Muhammad Ali. “That’s an American problem, a uniquely American problem.”
Omar Suleiman, another imam who spoke, warned of attempts by the press to attack Clark’s character as a way to suggest he’s not “worth fighting for.”
“The same media that humanizes white terrorists vilifies black victims,” he said.
The near daily protests in downtown Sacramento have remained largely peaceful, with only a few instances of physical confrontations between protesters and police or other civilians. Several protesters Thursday approached a line of police on bicycles, with one holding up a cellphone and asking “is this a gun?”
At the funeral, Sharpton and others praised demonstrators for their restraint and urged them to follow the lead of the Rev Martin Luther King Jr. and his advocacy of nonviolent protest.
The Kings and their owner have been supportive of the Clark family.
The team announced plans to set up an education fund for Stephon Clark’s children and a partnership with Black Lives Matter Sacramento to bring “transformational change” to the city’s black communities.  Former Kings player Matt Barnes attended the funeral and helped pay for it.
The arena is the focal point of a downtown revitalization effort. The area has struggled economically and has a large homeless population.
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said he’s committed to working with Stevante Clark to bring more resources to his South Sacramento community.
The two spoke at the funeral, where Stevante Clark apologized for previously disrupting a City Council meeting by jumping on a desk, dancing and shouting his brother’s name at Steinberg.
“We’re going to forgive the mayor, amen,” Clark said at the funeral. “Everybody say they love the mayor.”
Shernita Crosby, Stephon Clark’s aunt, has said the family isn’t “mad at all the law enforcement.”
“We’re not trying to start a riot,” she said. “What we want the world to know is that we got to stop this because black lives matter.”

Our homegrown star
By Rebecca Huval, 11.09.17.
source: https://www.newsreview.com/sacramento/our-homegrown-star/content?oid=25328337
Friends and former teachers credit Gerwig’s success to her ability to listen keenly, both in daily life and on stage.
From the opening scene of Lady Bird, it’s obvious that the filmmaker has paid close attention to her hometown. Under her direction, Sacramento sparkles like it never has on screen, both for its natural beauty and straightforward elegance.
“We wanted it to look plain and luscious,” Gerwig told SN&R. “I had a really strong feeling of: Sacramento is beautiful, we don’t have to do anything to make it beautiful. We have to spend time there and we have to think about what it looks like and we have to shoot it honestly—and it will be beautiful because we shoot it honestly, just as these characters will be beautiful because they’re written and acted and shot honestly.”
Despite the city’s supple look, drama queen Lady Bird (given name Christine McPherson) can’t wait to leave. In the movie’s opening line, she self-consciously asks, “Do you think I look like I’m from Sacramento?”
“You are from Sacramento,” deadpans her mother, Marion, played by Laurie Metcalf.
After watching the highly naturalistic film, you’re left to wonder how much Gerwig identifies with Lady Bird. Like the title character, the director graduated from a Catholic high school in the early aughts, and her mother also worked in medicine. Where does the fiction cross-fade into reality? And how does she truly feel about Sacramento?
A thread connects Gerwig with characters she's written, and it's difficult to untangle the fact from the fiction. Like Brooke in Mistress America, she’s a multidisciplinary artist—what with her writing, acting, directing, fencing and dancing—who admires others’ ability to cross-pollinate.
She left California to attend Barnard College in New York City. Her reason for going? Well, first, Gerwig was rejected from UCLA’s musical theater department, she says. But she whisked away to New York because she was fascinated with the students at Barnard and their a la cart degrees.
“The girl who interviewed me was a double major in astrophysics and opera,” she says, “and I was like, ’Who are you? How do I get in here?’”
Like the pirouetting protagonist of Frances Ha, Gerwig admits that she herself is sincere. Plus, friends describe her as whimsical and kind, a graceful dancer yet a klutz. “She would come into a room and trip because it was Greta,” says high school drama teacher Cheryl Watson. “Or just stumble a little and come up in a Greta way.” This mirrors the awkward gestures yet refined movements of the aspiring dancer she played.
She, like Frances and Lady Bird, left Sacramento for New York to make it in the arts.
“I had a pretty strong sense of needing to—feeling like I have to go prove myself,” Gerwig says. “That I have to go do this in another place and then I can come back.”
During college, Gerwig was cast in a small role in LOL, an indie film in the mumblecore genre that would continue to shape her dialogue-driven sensibilities as a filmmaker. In New York, she also met Baumbach, her future boyfriend and pivotal creative collaborator. The two co-wrote Frances Ha in 2012—earning Gerwig a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress—and Mistress America in 2015.
And with Lady Bird, Gerwig has come into her own. Compared to her introspective co-written films, this script rips to the heart of relationships. She probes into icy mother-daughter rifts and deeply rooted friendships with an openhearted humor that makes the ordinary tragedies sting with realness. Poignant scenes, such as a son interviewing for the same job as his unemployed father, resonate in her hands, not for their florid banter, but for the silences in between the dialogue.
“I wanted the language of the script to be quotidian but also poetic, and that it felt like you would stumble into something beautiful,” she says, “and even though it’s teenagers bumbling and never saying exactly what they mean, or a mother and daughter fighting, that there was a way that you could somehow get to something that was beautiful without meaning to. And not trying to dress up language, but allow it to exist.”
The plot is as straightforward as the language. Lady Bird dreams of flying away to an East Coast school to become someone. Her nitpicky mother dotes on her while criticizing her every statement and thrift-store purchase. So Lady Bird colludes with her father to apply to the fancy East Coast colleges that would meet her mother’s disapproval. In the meantime, Lady Bird finds an outlet for her hammy personality in theater, falls in love, gets her heart broken—twice—dumps her best friend for the cool crowd and eventually makes right.
She realizes that, all along, she’s loved those things that nurtured and bugged her at the same time: her mother and her motherland.
It all sounds so normal, but many moments feel remarkable. During the Sacramento debut screening at the Tower Theatre on October 29—filled to capacity with Gerwig’s friends, family and other Sacramentans—viewers sniffled back tears in surround sound.
Upon reading her college application essay, one of the teacher-nuns remarks: “You clearly love Sacramento.”
After some back-and-forth, Lady Bird eventually realizes, “I pay attention.”
“Don’t you think maybe they are the same thing? Love and attention.” The words rippled through the audience with the warm flush of wonder.
Though the characters often fail at their small aspirations, the story elicits a stream of laughter. It ping-pongs us between a state of bemusement and reluctant recognition of ourselves in these characters.
For those of us who live in Sacramento, the film tugs even harder. Gerwig and cinematographer Sam Levy studied local painters Gregory Kondos (think: soft landscapes) and Wayne Thiebaud (pastel-colored diner food). The palette reads just as they intended: plain and lush.
“It has a painterly quality—the whole film,” Gerwig says. “I felt like those were two painters who really captured that Northern California palette, which is so specific, which is different from L.A., it’s its own world.”
For locals, the movie also offers a treasure hunt: There’s the liquor store across from CLARA! The SN&R stand outside a coffee shop! (Forgive the self-promotion.) The yellow Tower Bridge hovering like a timeless icon!
“I wanted to do a tip-of-the-hat to the scene in Manhattan where they’re talking until dawn and you see the Brooklyn Bridge, but I wanted it to be the Tower Bridge,” Gerwig says. “It was like their own cinematic moment.”
During the screening at Tower Theatre, the audience hooted each time a local landmark flashed on screen.
Though she has lovingly depicted Sacramento, Gerwig grew up dreaming of leaving her home, like Lady Bird. But how does the relocated New Yorker feel about Sacramento today?
Reckoning with the past
I met Greta Gerwig inside the Ritz-Carlton on the tippy top of Nob Hill in San Francisco. She tells me that the night before, she had gone out drinking with friends she'd met at Phoebe Hearst Elementary School in East Sacramento. Longtime buddies, including local art consultant Tre Borden and Mat Cusick, the founder of Q Arts Foundation, had crashed in her extra room at the Ritz.
“Last night, I had four people I’ve known since I was 6 years old at the screening, and it was so moving,” Gerwig says. The lanky filmmaker wore an artfully tousled bob and a drapey shirtdress patterned with palm fronds. Even in a chilly and cavernous meeting room, she exuded ease.
Borden remembers that Gerwig showed signs of her future career in early elementary school. “There was a talent show where she did ’Yankee Doodle Dandy and tap-danced, and it was epic,” he says. “She’s always been a triple-threat kind of person.”
Gerwig recalls Borden a little differently. “Tre would tease me a lot, and I did not like it,” she says with a smirk. “I’m very easy to tease because I’m really sincere, and also I take things really personally, which, obviously, kids love that, and then they’re like, I’m just gonna razz you more.”
Borden says he probably teased her “for knowing everything.” Clearly, they’ve since made up.
Gerwig did know a lot of things early on: In addition to being a fencer and a dancer, she was a high-achiever academically. “Greta was such a cool geek,” says former drama teacher Watson. Her heavy load of extracurriculars continued on through high school at St. Francis in East Sacramento.
“She had her hand in every pot in high school,” Mickiewicz says. “A very smart student, very unlike Lady Bird.”
Gerwig credits St. Francis’ all-girl atmosphere with providing a haven where she could concentrate on her work, an environment she carried over into college when she chose to go to Barnard.
“I was the combination of a late bloomer and also kind of precocious, so it was an unfortunate combination,” she says. “Once I got to St. Francis, I felt this relief of not having to present yourself as a desirable object. All of the girls looked like hell for all four years—it was a wonderful thing.”
Thanks to brother-school Jesuit High in Carmichael, Gerwig was able to act in four theater productions a year. Gerwig says it was through these plays that she grew as an artist. High school theater also is central to Lady Bird; through goofy warm-ups, student actors bond indelibly.
Ed Trafton, a drama teacher at Jesuit, remembers a performance that seemed to stop time. Gerwig played Dorothy in the musical The Wizard of Oz, but as an alto, she wasn’t able to hit some of the high notes in “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” During practice, Trafton lowered the key to A flat—he still remembers—and asked her to imagine speaking it.
“She performed it beautiful and plaintively, and she moved everyone there,” Trafton says. “It became this incredible moment that she managed to make really open and vulnerable and really transparent. That’s another thing that’s in her work now. She’s simultaneously so strong and so full of steel, but she also is so tender, and she also has the capacity to convey delicacy.”
When Gerwig rewatches videos of those early performances, she says, she cringes.
“When you see any child or teenager do something with incredible intensity, there’s just a slight amount of humor around it because it feels a bit like they’re play-acting being an adult,” she says.
Through high school drama, Gerwig also cemented some of her most lasting friendships, including with Mickiewicz and Rebecca Light, theater-director Watson’s daughter, who now lives in Southern California. Their real-life stories and friendships are echoed but not exactly copied in the film.
“I don’t think I ever laughed harder in my life than doing plays in high school,” Gerwig says.
Outside of school plays, Mickiewicz and Gerwig remained serious actors. They went to many school dances where they played dress-up, including as characters from The Great Gatsby and a French couple. (In Lady Bird, themed dances include cowboys and eternal hell.) One year, they thrifted for a 1920s ballgown, fedora and suspenders, Mickiewicz says. They were so committed to their roles that, when the backdrop for the couples’ photos was a cardboard cutout of a jukebox, the young couple moved the set piece because it had not yet been popularized in their chosen decade.
“She was totally committed to the moment,” drama teacher Watson says. “She was always in the moment on stage and always present and real. It’s a gift that she has. She makes every moment her own, but in a way that supports everything around her.”
Gerwig consciously created memories outside of school as well, she says. She fondly remembers a pre-cellphone-era Sacramento, when she and her friends would drive between the now-shuttered True Love Coffeehouse and the still-open Willie’s Burgers looking for her crush. One time, she left her car parked at True Love and hitched a ride with her friend to cruise around town in pursuit of him.
“We got back to True Love, and the crush had left a note at my car, and I was like, ’Noooo! I was thwarted!’”
Unlike the title character of Lady Bird, Gerwig says, she didn’t think Sacramento was uncool. She compulsively kept notebooks to hold onto her memories of home.
“There are many ways in which I’m not like this character,” Gerwig says. “I’ve always had a presentiment of loss, as Joan Didion puts it, and sort of nostalgia for what I’m experiencing now. So I kind of knew I was going to have these memories embossed. … I think I always knew that I was preserving it somehow, and I loved it.”
Now, Gerwig is recording Sacramento in a far more public forum, and as usual, she’s taking the role seriously. While the city grows, seemingly at a faster clip than in decades prior, she hopes to preserve it on film.
“It’s hard to see it change,” she says. “There are little things that I know are fading, which was one of the nice things about shooting in Sacramento. There’s a ton of footage that’s not in the movie that I’m actually gonna try to cut together into something else—not a full-length movie, but just a piece of Sacramento because I feel like I want to get it before it’s totally changed over.”
At the Tower Theatre premiere, she announced her hopes to direct a quartet of films here.
Gerwig says she adores the people of Sacramento most of all, as it’s the place where her family and some of her closest friends live. She cites her mother’s friend who grows the majority of her own food in her backyard.
“If that was anywhere else, that person would make it their whole identity that they grow their food, and they would have an Instagram page about it and do all this stuff, and it would be so public—and she just does it in her backyard,” Gerwig says. “There’s something about that to me, not commodifying everything, that’s great about a place, that feels like Sacramento to me.”
But would she ever move back, or does success still require living on the East Coast?
“I would move back,” she says. “A lot of different filmmakers, you get to a point where you can live anywhere you want.”

I have posted many blogs about this house because I am unashamedly proud.  Those of you who follow my blog are probably about to start spamming my write ups, however, I’m always writing for the new person that comes on the scene looking for a more frugal life, a less expensive way to live, a way to survive and thrive on one income.
Welcome! You have come to the right place.  I love nothing more than to drink coffee and talk about doing life and homemaking, raising a family, following a dream…and all of that in the easiest and most affordable way.
Don’t get me mixed up with cheap skates and thrifty queens from the land of penny-pinching and beyond though.  I do love to shop now and then and I love my stuff.  I’m also into decluttering and simplifying.  A walking contradiction?  No, just finding that balance daily and working it to my advantage.
I feel as though, now that I have finally purchased our first home at age 47, that I can talk frugal shop with the veterans at last.  I have earned at least a few titles.  Why?  Because I found, bid on, and won this fixer upper for dirt cheap at the worst time in the market in California when all the housing is at an all time high.  I did this when there wasn’t much out there, it was all exorbitant, finance rates were going up, people were freaking out, as well as myself.
But I did it and I did it with only a $130,000 loan to work with in a market that mere shacks in bad neighborhoods were starting at $200,000.  And I found that one house that looked awful but was a true diamond in the rough.  This house had many of our friends pursing their lips and faking their happiness for us.  Later many of them would admit that they were wondering just what the heck we were thinking.  They didn’t want to tell me that the house was a filthy and run down mistake because they knew that I was pretty fragile at that point and this house was truly my last hope.
But all sorts of magic occurred.  God sent a handy man desperate for work and who, though slow as molasses and wound up leaving in the middle of the night for Mexico half way through the job, was skilled and knowledgeable and got us most of the way through the transformation.  Bali found skills he didn’t know he had.  I found brain power I had no idea I had access to all these years.
It literally took some mowing, fertilizer, major pruning, a few days of rain, planting of trees, both fruit and shade, and fences to make the outside look great.  As for the inside, it took a bit of plumbing, a tad of electric, lots of scrubbing, tons of paint, carpets were torn out, and windows washed to bring it back to its old glory.  But not much more than that.  The foundation was solid, the electric and plumbing are old but the good old stuff.  The house has solid bones.  It was built during a time when homes were built to last.
All in all the house renovation with the handy man (while he was around) cost a total of $15,000.  That was for everything; the worker, electrician, plumber, paint, all the garden supplies, trees, seeds, plants, all the fences, 6-foot cedar fence in back and white picket in front, the exterior paint (which we still have 10 gallons of), and dump runs.
The house was a total of $135K plus $4K closing cost and $15K renovation = $154K.  Wow!
We now enjoy a mortgage of $918.02.  That includes taxes, MIP, and insurance.
Now, I know for some of you in other states you may laugh at all this being that housing is much cheaper elsewhere.  Here in California, it is out of control.  An average house in the Sacramento-Sutter area is around $300K to start and that is for nothing special.
I desperately wanted our mortgage to be smaller than any rent we have ever paid.  Our rents have always been around $1300 give or take a hundred dollars.
This house is very small.  The house is 1120 square feet and the yard is 5,220 square feet.  It is a two bedroom and one bath.  There are 4 of us and now an elder that has joined us, so 5 people, 2 large dogs, a cat, and I’ve created the back yard into a mini urban farm.
Although it’s small, I feel like we have all the room we need and we can create even more if we desire.  After fencing in all the yard it made it more vast.  We have a detached garage that can be later turned into a studio apartment if needs be and we have planted a mini food forest that will continue to expand and grow.  The house is stuffed with people but the way it’s set up with a hall and separate rooms, we have plenty of room for now.  Of course, our boys are also very small still and don’t take up much room.  I have most of their toys either packed up in the garage or outside to play with.
In the old days, a house like this was cherished and tended to.  Families our size inhabited this small home and it was considered more than enough.  With the trend of bigger homes, bigger cars,  and supersized everything…this home may seem small to the average family.  But we are into keeping things simple and easy.  I have decluttered down to what is absolutely necessary, quality, and cherished so our home isn’t packed with stuff.
I long ago learned that a simple can of paint and lush house plants can make all the difference.
We are really into this new movement (new to us that is) of urban farming and we have been practicing living simply and frugally for years.  Now with our own home, we get to practice all of the green and sustainable living.  Not much is wasted here, including space.  We love nothing more than being thrifty, down home, and reusing, composting, recycling, and re-inventing everything.
I also enjoy learning all I can about living well on very little as we have one small income that provides for all of us and I just don’t buy into this consumerist society.  I believe that we must all change our ways of living for families and individuals to thrive and for this planet to heal and thrive again.  We need to go back to simpler times and reincorporate that into today’s world, to find balance with modern times and our great grandmothers time.  If we mix the two we can find the life that connects us to Mother Earth, God (or Spirit), to ourselves and those we love, and slow down this crazy pace and dollar chasing lifestyle to something more real and pleasurable.
The start of that is living under our means and this house was my answered prayer to that.
Buying and creating a cute cottage for real cheap. Living simply. I have posted many blogs about this house because I am unashamedly proud.  Those of you who follow my blog are probably about to start spamming my write ups, however, I'm always writing for the new person that comes on the scene looking for a more frugal life, a less expensive way to live, a way to survive and thrive on one income.

Dennis Smith Jr. will be the Best Player in the 2017 NBA Draft
The NBA draft is unpredictable by nature, but given the depth, talent, youth, and hype surrounding this year's crop, identifying the best player right now is a lot different than predicting who will be seen as the brightest star a few years down the road.
On level ground, it's hard to definitively separate any one elite prospect in this class from another. Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball, Jayson Tatum, Josh Jackson, and De'Arron Fox are all supremely gifted players who could all enjoy numerous All-Star appearances. But once they find their NBA homes on Thursday night, a host of new variables enter the equation—their new coach, surrounding personnel, culture, and the system in which they find themselves will ultimately play a major role in determining which prospect winds up at the head of this talented class.
And then there's Dennis Smith Jr., an athletic monster who, for a variety of reasons, often sees his name left out of this conversation. If he winds up with the right organization, Smith is absolutely good enough to separate himself from everyone listed above. Smith tore his ACL at adidas Nations in 2015, and then endured a complicated and trying freshman campaign at North Carolina State that included the entire coaching staff being fired in February. But before all that, he was viewed as the top point guard in his class.
That perception didn't survive the season, but the violent downhill burst that's drawn comparisons to 2011-era Derrick Rose (Smith Jr.'s favorite player) and Russell Westbrook has not. In a league commandeered by guards who can thrash the rim at will, Smith Jr. has the physical tools to be the type of unstoppable playmaking weapon so coveted around the league. He's shifty on his feet and crafty with the ball. For him not to be considered at the top of the draft is curious, but something Smith Jr. seems prepared to take in stride.
"It doesn't surprise me at all," Smith Jr. told reporters on Wednesday. "It's been like this my whole life. Regardless of how I go out and perform, if I am the best player, in some way I would still get slighted. But I'm accustomed to it now."
Photo by Rob Kinnan - USA TODAY Sports
With college numbers that size up well against Fultz, the probable number one pick, Smith Jr. is, from a statistical standpoint, absolutely worth taking with a top-three pick. But his ultimate NBA fate will be impacted by his habitat; some situations are more opportune than others, and it's unclear whether he'll go as high as three or low as 10. On Wednesday, the 19-year-old comfortably swatted away at least a dozen questions about the increasingly antiquated Triangle offense, which may become his new world if New York Knicks President Phil Jackson takes him with the eighth pick.
"I believe I can play in any offense. It just takes time," he said. "There's going to be a learning curve with everything that you do, but if you're mentally strong you can do anything."
The Knicks offer a very different situation than do, say, the Boston Celtics, where Smith would fight for minutes in a crowded backcourt that's already overflowing with gamers who've already proven their ability to positively impact a playoff run. Boston, unique among this year's lottery squads, is a team that doesn't need a rookie to take 15 shots per game or even log a dozen minutes every night. But their desire to sign a max player this summer means at least one of their four guards is likely gone, and it shouldn't shock anyone if the Celtics trade down for Smith Jr. or snag him with the third pick.
But either way, being on the Celtics would be very different from, say, the Dallas Mavericks, where Smith Jr. can presumably start on opening night and thrive in a steady, pick-and-roll dependent scheme where he'd be surrounded by some of the league's most feared outside shooters and a rim-rolling vortex in Nerlens Noel. Spacing matters as much as a stable work environment, and Dallas can provide both while still competing for a playoff spot.
Smith Jr. may also be Sacramento's first post-Boogie Cousins lottery pick, drafted onto arguably the least talented roster in the league, fenced in by fellow first and second-year players who are all adjusting to each other and life in the NBA at the same time. On the Orlando Magic, should they abandon Elfrid Payton, Smith would face an uphill battle against defenses that can afford to constantly ignore Aaron Gordon and Bismack Biyombo and focus on clogging driving and passing lanes.
"He will be good in any system you put him in," former N.C. State assistant coach Orlando Early told VICE Sports. "He will be better in a system where he's got the ball in his hands."
For his own safety, Smith Jr. shouldn't be allowed to play basketball without a parachute strapped to his back. During a recent workout with the Los Angeles Lakers, he logged a ridiculous 48-inch vertical leap. Gravity doesn't affect Smith Jr. like most human beings; he's equally explosive off one leg or two, and packs enough energy in his 195-pound frame to convince shot-blocking bigs to retreat and live another day.
Taught the game by his father, Dennis Smith Sr.—a supreme athlete in his own right, who boasted 4.2 40-yard-dash speed before an ankle injury derailed his football career—Smith Jr. transformed into someone worth paying attention to when he scored 42 points at a Holiday Invitational against current Milwaukee Bucks center Thon Maker. It convinced North Carolina State to offer him a scholarship the very next day. He was a sophomore in high school.
"You know Thon, I don't know what they list him at, seven feet, but his brother is 6'9", 6'10"," Early said. "They had a fairly long and athletic team and Dennis could finish above those guys. I have been around guys that were possibly as athletic, and maybe even more athletic, but I haven't been around guys that played athletic like Dennis. Like, some guys can run and jump and dunk and they're just tremendous when nobody's on the court with them. Dennis does it in the game. He plays athletic, and that's what separates him from other guys."
Smith Jr. can do more than score, too. He averaged 6.2 assists per game on a team that was packed with teammates who have just about no chance to make the NBA. Instead of going to Kentucky or Duke—a team he gave 32 points in ACC conference play—and playing for a national championship beside fellow five-star recruits, Smith Jr.'s underdog mentality convinced him it'd be more stimulating to dismantle powerhouse programs than suit up for one.
"We weren't very good this year," Early said. "And we had guys that missed shots that, you know, there were games where I walked out saying 'man, he should've had 13 assists tonight. He should've had 14.' He could've definitely averaged eight or nine."
Photo by Joshua S. Kelly - USA TODAY Sports
Family friend Shawn Farmer, a trainer who first worked him out as a sixth grader, told VICE Sports that something about Smith Jr. is "extra-terrestrial" whenever he steps on a basketball court.
"I don't want to call it a dog. I don't want to say he's a whole different animal. There's just something about this kid when he plays, man. His eyes do something weird," Farmer said. "When he starts to compete his eyes do something that I don't see out of other kids. His eyes are different. Like the Duke game, against Virginia Tech, against Carolina, I saw his eyes. He's different."
Last season Farmer would regularly sit behind N.C. State's bench. He remembers Wolfpack coaches turning their heads to flash him a "what the hell just happened?" look whenever Smith Jr. would pull off something ridiculous. This happened often.
"I've played professionally. Eight years in Europe, one year in the CBA. I've seen some guys that could jump," Farmer said. "But at 6'3"? I mean, I used to tell Junior, 'Man, you make me sick. You just make me sick.' It don't make no sense. The stuff he does, man. I can't explain it."
That extraterrestrial talent certainly helps, but to succeed as a ball-dominant point guard in the NBA, Smith Jr. will need to turn his jumper into a dart. It's a relatively small sample size, but he only made 35.9 percent of his threes as a freshman. That number isn't terrible, but in order to force NBA defenders to chase him over screens it's a mark that will have to improve.
Judging from the work ethic in play, here, it will. After the season ended, Farmer's instructed Smith Jr. to make 4000 jumpers a week, catch-and-shoot and off-the-dribble attempts from different spots all over the court. "He looked at me like I was crazy," Farmer said. But the work is already starting to pay off, with drastic improvement seen in charted results from April to June.
Defense matters, too. And by his own admission, Smith Jr. knows he needs to be more attentive on that side of the floor. "Small things, like remembering to box out, staying low on defense, communication, things of that nature," he said. "Everything else I'll continue to work on and tighten it up skill-wise, but it's the sound things that matter.
In today's NBA, point guards who double as their team's top playmaker and primary scorer are essentially a prerequisite for success. Smith Jr. is that, a cloud-hopping marauder who can pencil All-Star weekend into his calendar every year if things work out right. He'll be effective no matter what, but a little draft night luck needs to be involved if he's to elevate ahead of the other great players in this year's class.
"He's the type of guy that, today, there are various reasons you may like a guy better than him," Early said. "But three years from now, your owner is going to say 'Now wait a minute, we took him over Dennis for what reason? Explain that to me one more time so I'm sure I understand this.'"
Dennis Smith Jr. will be the Best Player in the 2017 NBA Draft published first on http://ift.tt/2pLTmlv

Flying drones over the internet isn't the future we wanted, but it's the one we've got
You're flying... kind of! Cape lets registered users fly drones in remote locations. Takeoff and landing are handled automatically by the drone.
We were promised jetpacks, but as many-a-scholar has noted, here we are knocking on 2020's door and we are still jetpackless. We have, however, managed to put countless drones into the sky. While jetpacks are scarce, a drone can be had for as little as $15 and as much as, well a hell of a lot more than that. Anyone can fly a cheapo drone into their living room wall, but if you want to fly a bigger drone somewhere cool there are costs, logistics and federal guidelines to contend with. What's an apartment-dweller with big drone flying ambitions to do?
Enter Cape: a service that lets you fly real drones in real outdoor locations, without leaving the comfort of your home or your web browser. No license, no learning curve, no expensive crashes. Flight locations are exclusively located in California at this point, and the service is in beta so its developers expect to work out some bugs and improve latency before launch. Deep into a stretch of grey Seattle weather, flying a drone around a sunny California desert sounded fantastic to me.
Just sitting at my desk in Seattle, flying over the Sacramento River. You know, no big deal.
How I learned to stop worrying and love the drone
Cape's locations include desert and coastal sites including San Francisco Bay, the Salton Sea and Sacramento River. Each has its own hours and days of availability, but most are available weekdays until 5pm Pacific Time. Provided your internet connection is robust, all you need to do is select a site that's available and hop to the controls of your very own DJI Inspire 1.
Your flight begins with a diagram of your keyboard control shortcuts overlaying the camera's live feed. Getting started just requires pressing 'enter' to initiate autopilot take-off. And there you are – soaring above the California desert with the press of a button.
When your session starts, you're met with this handy controls diagram.
Cape's drones are as dummy-proof as you'd hope they would be. A map in the corner of the screen indicates where your aircraft is in the geo-fenced zone. You can't go beyond the zone's boundaries, can't crash your drone into another drone, and can't stray outside of minimum and maximum altitudes – autopilot will kick in and prevent you from doing any of these things.
You quite literally learn the controls on the fly, but they're easy to master. There's some lag, but it was honestly less than I expected. In no time, I was zooming across a little patch of California desert at a reasonable speed and legal altitude. There wasn't much to see, since that's how deserts are, aside from some distant brush and pixelated mountains on the horizon.
And on that topic: considering you're flying a drone that could very well be a world away, the live feed resolution isn't bad. At best it looks like a Google Street View image, but most of the time it's a bit more pixelated than that as it catches up with your movements. This translates to a slightly less awe-inspiring experience than, say, actually being there to gaze on some distant desert mountains.
I'm trying to drown this drone and it's having none of it.
It's a small world after all
The zones feel small once you've flown from one edge to the other, and by necessity the controls are pared down to a minimum. If it's a truly realistic piloting experience you're hankering, I'm not sure it'll scratch that itch. Playing tennis on a Nintendo Wii is convenient and fun in its own way, but it's not the same experience as playing on a real court with a racquet in your hand. You don't come away with the same satisfaction when so much is done for you.
So if it doesn't quite provide the same excitement as flying a drone in person, is it escapism that Cape can provide? Sure, getting a peek at the sun for the first time in days, even virtually, felt pretty nice. I can attest to how strong the desire is around Seattle to be somewhere sunny right now. I got a little bit of that escapism from Cape, but not so much that I'll be racing back to fly somewhere else tomorrow.
But really, when you think about what Cape allows you to do, it's kind of incredible. You're controlling an aircraft hundreds, maybe thousands of miles away, in real time. Finding visually rich places where those drones can be operated safely and legally seems like a tricky balance. Cape's website says the company is working on 'unlocking new locations,' and if one of those locations is in say, Norway or Iceland, then you'd definitely have my attention.
It's not jetpacks, but maybe we're getting closer.
