Guilin liegt im Nordosten des autonomen Gebiets Guangxi der Zhuang-Nationalität im Südosten Chinas an den Ufern des Li Jiang (Li-Fluss). Die Stadt ist in einer beeindruckenden Landschaft zwischen Hügeln erbaut und sehr bekannt für ihre Reisterrassen. Unser erster Stopp waren die Dazhai yao Terrace Fields, ein gigantischer Blick von hier oben.

Terrazas de arroz de Longji-  "Espina del dragón"

Situado a unos 100 km al norte de Guilin, el condado de Longsheng alberga las famosas terrazas de arroz de Longji, un hecho sorprendente de ingeniería agrícola.

Las aparentemente interminables filas de terrazas de arroz esculpidas en las laderas dicen que se asemejan a las escamas onduladas en la espina dorsal de un dragón cuando llenas de agua, dando a las terrazas su nombre, que significa literalmente "espina del dragón".

Estos increíbles campos de arroz en terrazas fueron construidos por primera vez en la dinastía Yuan (1271-1368) por los grupos étnicos Zhuang y Yao, que todavía ocupan la región hoy. Entre las aldeas minoritarias repartidas entre los campos de arroz, la aldea Ping'an Zhuang y la villa Jinkeng Dazhai Red Yao son dos puertas de entrada populares para explorar las magníficas terrazas. La vecindaria aldea de Longji Old Zhuang, otra zona escénica popular, es accesible por una caminata de media hora desde la villa de Ping'an.

"A People's History"

Frank Dikötter describes a chronology of the Cultural revolution and its aftereffects on Chinese society, contextualizing it in modern Chine story.

Following the failures of the GLF and Soviet revisionist destruction of Stalin, Mao attempts at reaffirming his purpose and power with a new political project. This time purging counter revolution means destroying "capitalist" culture. Red Years chaos erupts in 1966, plunging rabid indoctrinated youth, party members, ordinary people victims, then military into factionalized violence (groups are not unities!). Mao and certain people make use of it to eliminate opponents consolidate power until all controling effective military dictatorship emerges. Black Years students and ordinary disgruntled people are purged to countryside, finally following the Lin Biao military around 1971. Economically, 2/3 of the industrial budget is meanwhile wasted on relocating the industrial complex Third Front. The Grey Years see local communes disintegrate into more efficient pseudo feudal (tithe) cadre operated privatised economy. Black markets, underground factories, family privatised collective assets make a dynamic system to replace the inflexible stupidly homogenized Dazhai model of collectivised self reliance.

Arepo’s god. 

Someone on Tumblr posted this writing prompt for people to continue the story and this heartwarming tale about a selfless farmer inspired me to paint his main character, Arepo.

 As I read it, I remembered how a few years ago, when visiting the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces I did an 8 hour trekking from Ping'an Zhuang Village to Dazhai village. On the way amidst the rice terraces it started raining and as we stopped under a tree, there he was, Arepo. Merry and content, welcoming eyes, smoking his pipe. 

So, I decided to paint the character in this story inspired by the gracious man we met in China. The Tumblr story starts like this: 

Temples are built for gods. Knowing this a farmer builds a small temple to see what kind of god turns up.

Arepo built a temple in his field, a humble thing, some stones stacked up to make a cairn, and two days later a god moved in.
