My Master Has No Tail

Uchi no Shishou wa Shippo ga Nai, or My Master Has No Tail, is one of the anime I have been following this season. And I have been loving it for 3 reasons. 1 - Mameda the Tanuki. Growing up constantly belittled by other Tanuki on her home island for working on her transformation she strived to head out to the main land and trick humans just as he father had done before her. However she is living at a changing of times in Japan’s history. Westernization and industrialization has begun, and the people do not fall for her tricks. Luckily she comes across a mysterious woman and watches her perform rakugo, a type of tradition theater/storytelling. The woman, Bunko Daikokutei, enthralls our little troublemaker and after the performer ends up saving her, Mameda makes it her goal to perform rakugo, too. And thus the journey of a goofy but sincerly determined tanuki begins. 2 - Rakugo. An old style of performance done with 1 performer (and on occasion a back up instrument or 2). Their only physical tools are a wooden block and wooden fan, both to keep the pace of the story and the audience’s attention. Beyond that it is one person on their knees performing multiple roles through the use of slight body movement and changes in tone. Tough, but getting the wanted reaction out of a crowd is a great reward. 3 - Theater. I have a bit of history with theater, so getting to learn about an old style from another country is always a treat. There have even been a few moments during my watching where my reaction is “THIS! This is what it means to be a part of theater.” After all, while a rakugo is performed by one, that one is still supported by the rest of the people on the team. Tea, pillows, accompaniment, ushers, everyone is on the same team and the shared goal is “give the audience a great experience”. So, if you like tanuki shenanigans, performing arts, or even a bit of history, then I invite you into the theater and hope you enjoy the performance. EDIT; also stick around after the credits for the shorts after each episode where Mameda explains more about the story performed in each episode.
