The loose cloth of loose runner shorts will be slippery when the side of boat lifts up in strong gusts.

A bike tour epilogue
This turned out to be a bit of a “mini bike tour” in terms of miles and cycling days. The weather was humbling, the traffic was unexpected, and the logistics were at times complicated. There was a lot that worked but some big stuff that didn’t. Here are my parting thoughts in case you want to be doing a trip like this in Iceland.
What worked:
Our gear (s/o to our bikes, Fanny and Socks, special mention to my trusty SPF chapstick and my entire wool baselayer. With only a few exceptions, we were comfy and prepared and not over burdened.)
Camping (cheap and plentiful, if crowded at times; the communal kitchens are a godsend especially in bad weather)
Public heated pools (some of the fancier spas were worth it as a treat, but the pools were cheaper, less crowded, more plentiful, and overall just universally sparkling clean, awesome and relaxing)
The nature (we saw some awesome stuff; in some areas the landscape seemed to change every 10 minutes. Despite fewer bike days than we planned, we were never at a loss for things to do outside.)
Strava (I paid for the premium plan for elevation profiles and road types and referred to it constantly when planning routes)
What didn’t work very well:
The wind while biking (it can be steady, or it can be steady WITH gusts. Be realistic and ask yourself if you want to spend 8 hours fighting a 25mph headwind. Check the wind forecast. Be flexible in your planning to allow for down days or reroutes.)
The wind off bike (your sleeping bag temperature grade goes out the window when it’s being blown on by a freezing, moist breeze. Do yourself a favor and bring a wind proof tent. We had to block the gap under our rain fly to get a good night sleep some nights.)
Cycling the ring road (you probably don’t want to bike on most of it, traffic is too dangerous. Look at traffic counts if you don’t believe me. If you plan some alt routes like we did, be prepared for complicated bus shenanigans and some gravel riding. And with the buses, most only had the space for 2 bikes so we really got lucky we were the only cyclists. We met some folks who only biked at night to avoid traffic - the sun’s out nearly 24 hours in the summer - so that is an option if you’re into it.)
If I could do it over again, I’d set up a sort of basecamp area far away from Reykjavik traffic - probably in Egilsstaðir - and plan on shorter multi day loops in the east and north, instead of trying to cycle around the whole island. Maybe fly into Denmark, bike a little around there, then take this ferry.
Finally, re Iceland itself. I would recommend traveling here if you:
Love horsies
Love birdies
Love camping and nature and geology
I would NOT recommend traveling here if you:
Hate the idea of spending money (you can do the thrifty thing we did and camp, but food etc is just gonna be more expensive. It’s an island. They have to import a lot.)
Hate cold and / or windy weather
Travel in order to immerse yourself in another culture (I feel like I got glimpses of it, but it’s so crowded with tourists that those glimpses were few and far between)

i've vaguely been eyeing merino tees/baselayers for fall/winter cycling purposes and as with all intended-to-be-fitted clothing the question has arisen: what will bug me more, weird bagginess or a too-feminine cut
(spoiler: the answer is almost definitely 'a too-feminine cut' but like. would love a scenario where there was an actual win condition instead of just the lesser of two evils!)

This morning I learned that, perhaps unsurprisingly, several riders had been unable to complete yesterday’s grueling ride due to dehydration, exhaustion etc. Also, as we prepared to leave the hotel today, I noticed that a number of riders chose to ride in the vans because of yesterdays’ after-effects.
Today started out with the sun breaking through the clouds and that happened on and off during the day which was a welcome morale-boost. Even so, it was a stark 42 degrees F when we stepped outside so I wore my polartec baselayer, a decision I did not regret all day. The wind had not let up but maybe was a tad less - hard to tell because, yes, it was still a grind and it was hitting us more from our left side. Very hard to keep the bike steady under those conditions, and made more difficult by trucks screaming by at 70 mph (we were not an a highway but that was the speed limit) and by an available cycle “lane” to the right of the rumble strip that was no more than 12-18” wide in places and could become very disorienting due to the intense concentration needed to not veer off track. With all that said, we sometimes had a shoulder that was well paved where 2 riders could comfortably travel side by side. The wind did not let up all day and it was still a battle but I was averaging about 14 mph cycling by myself for the first 50 miles or so. I passed through “Texhoma”, a tiny town, guess where, on the Texas -Oklahoma state line where my 3 good friends caught up with me. We then went to the local subway shop for a well earned sandwich (6” tuna for me) after which I rode the remaining 20 miles or so alongside Jeannine so she could draught to my right and get some wind protection from my large muscled body 😂. All in all a much better day than yesterday but more challenging than “on paper”. Todays hill profile suggests a gentle downward slope all day but that was never noticed, unlike the 250-ft ascent.
Dinner was at Pub 54 (we are riding on route 54) which sits next to the hotel. The ribs and Modelo (🍺) were very tasty. I continue to eat vast amounts of food to (try to?) replace my caloric output.
Tomorrow we ride just 40 miles ! Sounds blissful. What am I missing?

Day 2: Marlborough - Sevenoaks: a ride of two halves
You would think given the mileage I’m going to be putting in over the next 3 1/2 weeks, I’d be continuously ravenous. But I had to force myself to eat chicken and chips last night, and here I sit at breakfast at the Bear hotel with a plate of egg and mushrooms in front of me, and I’m thinking this is hard work.

The prospect of riding inside the M25 today fills me with horror. I trusted Google and Strava when planning my route to the continent and believed as it suggested that Calais was the best way forward. Why didn’t I question this? I could have gone to Poole and Cherbourg but alas, I gave this no thought. Only a few days ago, I realised that not only would Poole be closer, it also avoids London and gets me further south in France quicker. Hindsight...all that said, I think today is going to be the most Urbanlely ride until I get to Athens. The sun is up, and I’m properly fed...

On a day that I couldn’t have felt more skanky if I’d followed Nyla into a stagnant pond, this happened.
Reeling from the cost of a shandy x 2 (£7 each) and my budget blown for the day, I headed to Waitrose for some Houmous and breakfast. As I walked past a parked van with a 6 year old boy hanging off the side:
Him: “Hi! Can you come over here?”
Me: “ah thanks for the invitation, but I have to get some food before the shops shut”
Him: “That’s sad, because my dad says he wants to kiss you!”

Although I’d had a bath, and treated myself to some of my rationed shampoo and conditioner, I still looked like Waynetta Slob...and this in discerning Sevenoaks! Before my bath and unbeknown to me until I’d looked in the mirror after my shandies, my face was covered in grime - from where? Greater London? I looked like I’d just finished Flanders in the rain. I’d say there was no chance of catching the sun with a baselayer of sun cream and coating of dirt, but I am a little pink! It was almost worth taking a selfie!
Today’s journey took in a no need to navigate until you get beyond Windsor route, down the A4 then head for Windsor. If you know the Great West Road that heads past the Fulham Brewery ans becomes the M4 or if you continue on the A4, takes you through delightful Slough, you will be surprised to hear that between Marlborough and Newbury, it is positively dreamy; rolling countryside, not many cars, even at rush hour, and wide, resurfaced carriageways. I know it from my first trip in 1991, though I was going the other way. It is the road that triggered something in my head for that first two wheeled exploration. At an even younger age I remember asking my dad, “Dad, you know the Bath Road?”, Yes, of course, he answered. “Does it go all the way to Bath?”. Lessons in life! A Roman road. I love that it’s still there and still goes to Bath, and perhaps now more than then, I appreciate the beautiful towns, burial grounds, the huge chalk white horse, inns and fields it passes through and still imagine all the journeys made over around 2,000 years and the various means of transport. I could almost forget I passed through Reading, as it wasn’t long that I continued down Memory Lane, reminiscing that at such a young age of 10/11, I’d take my pushbike and cycle as far afield as Twyford, and at 13 to Reading. I’m not sure my parents ever knew then but Dad will now if he reads this 😆.

Arriving in Windsor, I’d shed my arm and leg warmers. I never get bored of returning home, and it dawned on me as I nearly rode through without stopping, for once, I’m in no hurry; go back, sit down and enjoy. Someone asked me if I still know anyone there...most people if I knew them and they are still there will have changed beyond recognition. But I sat there people-watching and wondering: I would love to just recognise one person...it didn’t happen and I guess everyone has moved on.
Trusting my instinct rather than google or strava, I managed to avoid central London and some of the busier suburbs, and although horrible, smelly, polluted, the Greater London phase passed much quicker than I had anticipated. Start/stop x 150, riding on the outside of stationary traffic, I soon reached Purley (disappointingly I didn’t see the Purley King and Queen) and found with strong encouragement from a man at the side of the road, the biggest climb of the day. At this point, the inside of my right knee started to cry out it had had enough, and that leg sat in whilst my left leg largely took over for the last 20 miles. I have ridden in this area before when I lived in London for a while about 5 years ago. However, I must have been riding with my eyes shut. Inside the M25 and less than 10 miles from central London, and I’d returned to the countryside and rode alongside the North Downs Way. WHAT a surprise. Maybe it was just the perfect weather that made everything so stunning.

The last 10 miles to Sevenoaks was largely downhill. The headwind and traffic were the only negatives from the day, but 100 miles in and I arrived in Sevenoaks, another fantastic town. There’s a real cafe culture and if you can look past my rookie error of extortion for two shandies, it’s a place I’d consider living like Marlborough. Am I going to think like this for every stop I make over the next few weeks? 😊
So, it looks like I’ll make Dover, and therefore Calais. 10% of the journey complete...my first milestone hopefully awaits! Good night...France awaits...
