Raleigh Becket is not appreciated enough. This man is a fucking subversion by himself. You get the traumatized insomniac veteran who's lost his will to live and is childishly reckless—and partly gains it back because he meets a girl—sounds very familiar, a character archetype, yet!—this kind of character is usually always a bitch to the people around him.
But Raleigh? So polite? So respectful. Of everyone—until they disrespect him and even then, he avoids them rather than throw a tantrum. What actually managed to rile him up was Chuck insulting Mako! When Chuck insulted him multiple times he was like “whatever.”
And!—he fights for Mako’s agency. Pentecost holding her back from being a pilot out of love and worry is very much the father in him. But here you have a love interest who, instead of telling her how dangerous it is and that she should stay behind in safety, actually stands up to Pentecost for her.
He doesn't act like her fucking dad. Pentecost does and he kinda sorta is her dad. Raleigh’s not; he's her equal. Her co-pilot. And he acts like it.
P.S. my heart is much more willing to make room for Pentecost being that kind of protective over Mako because I'm Asian and as Mako says “It’s not obedience, it's respect.” He's her father-figure/teacher: and the entire thing that elders say about how you'd always be a kid to them. However, I don't like it when the love interest is like that—like, dude, you ain't her parent, she ain't a child. Stop it.
