⁣⠀ ⠀ Tekumi Photowalk VOL. 27 SHIN-OKUBO⠀ ⠀ Tekumi visits Koreatown!⠀ ⠀ When I first arrived to Japan I was enrolled full time at a Japanese language school in this hood (こんにちは @kaijs 🤓) so I got to know it well. The main streets are narrow but once you sneak into the labyrinth of back streets of izakayas there is some solid street shooting to do here. We got the extra pretty rainy night aesthetic without so much rain too which was awesome ! ⁣⠀ ⠀ Tekumi Photowalk VOL. 22 SUGAMO⠀ ⠀ ⠀ We had a pretty big group out for this one, even with the rain… we ended up building an entire light and production set in one area. At some point, I decided to take a walk and do some solo street shots (what you’re seeing in the post)… and this was the rare time that I had to leave early for another engagement. When I checked the group chat a littler later it was flooded with images and videos of the group members being interrogated by police! ⁣⠀ ⠀ Some street snaps from Osaka from my recent travels in Kansai.⠀ ⠀ I was doing 15-20 kms per day almost the entire trip, of walking and exploring on foot the small nooks and alleys of each city for near 2 weeks. ⁣⠀ ⠀ I had an afternoon of cloud and intermittent rain in Kobe for the first time recently. Can’t believe it took me all these years of Kansai travel to eventually get somewhere that is just under 1 hour transit from Osaka.⠀ ⠀ Conclusion, port cities are always beautiful and Kobe is no exception. Also, had a lot more worn down and beat up areas that always makes for great photography spots which is another typical port city trait. It gave me some definite Vancouver, BC (my hometown) vibes.⠀ ⠀ Nankin-Machi (Kobe’s Chinatown and Kansais largest) is one of 3 major chinatowns in all of Japan (other two in Yokohama and Nagasaki) with over 100 Chinese restaurants and killer street food (Peking duck steamed buns 🤤).⠀ ⠀ Next trip will have to be a few days at least though, I have a feeling the night photography would be really good here.⠀ ⠀ Have you been? Is that weird? Probably, but I don’t care. Wouldn’t it be more fun with others to share the adventure with? As I get older I think yes but finding someone to keep up? Not sure haha. ⁣⠀ ⠀ Tekumi Photowalk VOL. 6 SHINAGAWA⠀ ⠀ Shinagawa….you were a small group this week but with the rain it was to be expected. There was something mysterious about these streets on this night. A neighbourhood so big, being one of the key stations on the Yamanote line… yet it felt empty, dark, almost like we were back to lockdown days. In any case, you set the perfect backdrop for some moody rainy day vibes so I thank you and our group of photo walkers and model this night. ⁣⠀ ⠀ Over the years I’ve learned that going out to do street photography especially is more than just being out there pointing your camera at things hoping to catch something cool. I think there is a meditative quality and philosophy of mindfulness that is integral to not just be documenting as an outside observer. What do you smell? Hear? What are the textures and colours around you? Who is interesting or about to do something interesting? I do my best to convey all of these things and more when I capture and share a photo. At least this is the goal for me. Not something easy to achieve no doubt but I think it’s integral to understand your philosophy for shooting before you even put your camera in your bag. ⠀ ⠀ To anyone that has read this far 😝 What do you think?
