Whereas birthdays had once been a solitary affair ( outside his family, of course, who was always loud and rowdy, eager to make a big deal out of a special day ), Reki's slowly grown used to having friends around him who genuinely want to spend the day with him.

Right now, it's just the teenagers of their makeshift little friend group — the adults confined to their average day jobs until the sun starts to go down, and they can all get together for a small celebration at Sia la Luce. Reki had ( predictably ) been the one to suggest a skate around town in the meantime. However, it's the middle of summer and the Okinawa sun is brutal. It hadn't been longer than an hour before they'd needed a quick break.

So they're sat outside an ice cream shop. Langa was currently inside grabbing them all a treat ( as he was the one most in need of a respite in the AC, reki hadn't put up a fight ), and Reki and Miya wait on a bench. It hadn't exactly been a surprise when the younger boy pulled his switch out of his bag.

But — then he says that, and for a long, silent moment all Reki can do is stare at him in vague shock.

" .... I'm gonna pretend you didn't just tell me that. I don't need to know that."

Oh, there is a shit - eating grin present on the redhead’s face the moment he hears those words from Miya. He’s going to treasure this moment forever. He’s never gonna let the other live it down. 

“What was that? You were talking so quietly I don’t think   I heard you. Could you say it again? A little bit louder,    this time? Don’t mind my phone, just think I might need   to preserve this moment. Y’didn’t even call me a slime!”

“What, about bringing you to ‘ S ‘? Yeah, of course.” 

He knows Shion isn’t going to like the idea. It makes the other boy nervous enough just to see Reki on his own board skating to school — he’s going to hate a place as chaotic as ‘ S ‘, where skating recklessly is considered the norm. And yet, Reki wants him to see. ‘ S ‘ has become something important to him in the years that Shion has been gone, a large part of his life that he wants Shion to know. He wants him to understand, even if he doesn’t approve. 

“Just once. If you hate it, you don’t ever have to go again.   Promise. Y’don’t have to skate, obviously, and I’ll be lookin’   out for you the whole time. Langa and Annie too. And I’ll    tell the others — Miya, Shadow, Joe, and Cherry. If they’ve   got your back, no one’s gonna mess with you.”

He reaches between them, grabbing hold of one of Shion’s hands between both of his own. Gives it a small squeeze and flashes a hopeful smile. 

“Please. It’s important to me.”
