This is the Future

Once upon a time, there was a geek who dreamed of a future where he would never have to step out of the house, stay indoors in his underwear the whole day, and order everything he needed off Amazon.com. It didn't happen.

Future generations of this geek compromised, pared down the dream of having anything delivered to your home whenever you wanted it, and settled for digital things being delivered to your home whenever you wanted it.

Except things started to get stupid again along the way and stuff didn't work the way it ought to. For example, Digital Rights Management. Somehow, someone whispered to those companies that have been selling us CDs all these years that they could double or triple their sales if they could not just sell consumers a CD, but a CD and an MP3 and a DVD collection.

So companies started make us buy things not once, but multiple times. A CD for when I'm sitting in the car. An MP3 to load onto my mobile phone. And the live recording DVD for the home.

The good news is, some of them companies have wisened up, and realised, that it's probably best not to antagonise consumers by selling them three copies of everything they made. Instead, with pleasant surprise, the movie industry seems to have taken to heart that we'd prefer to pay once for a piece of content, and then access or view it from whatever devices we owned.

The name of the game-changer is a project called UltraViolet. Formed by a consortium of over 60 Hollywood producers and retailers called the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE), UltraViolet will be a "digital locker" service that will enable consumers who've purchased content to access it from any and every supported device.

Here's how it works. Let's say you really enjoyed watching Horrible Bosses in the cinema, and wanted to keep a copy at home for austerity's sake. You could run out to your nearest DVD store and pick one off the shelf, and go home and watch it on your DVD player. Now, let's say you're in the office, and you wanted to continue watching the movie for a bit; well, you can then stream it from UltraViolet's service. And so on and so forth.

The idea is that every movie you buy can then be added into your UltraViolet "locker", and then accessed from any device you buy. This also does away with the nasty habit the entertainment industry has of changing its media formats every five years or so. Remember the video cassette? Well, it got replaced by the Video CD. Which got replaced by the DVD.

And now, we have the Blu-Ray disc teetering on the edge. With UltraViolet, the idea of licensing is that the programmes that you've "purchased" are not tied to one particular physical format, but rather made available to you as long as you are alive.

In my opinion, that's the way it should work. And the rest of the world seems to be heading that way. Already, Google Music and Amazon provides you with a "digital locker" for your owned music, only, those copies of music online are not your own files - they are files the service recognises you own and have a right to. It's the same with iTunes Match where you pay a subscription to listen to music you have already got on your home computer, and subsequent music you're purchasing.

Steam does this very well within it's own ecosystem, allowing you to back-up save games to the cloud (a feat iCloud is promising for iOS games), and letting you re-download any games you may have already purchased. But the big leap with UltraViolet is that almost every player in the industry has banded together to create something for the good of the entire industry.

It's an industry solution the likes we've never seen before, and one that even the music industry has yet to achieve. Yet I think it's a significant idea and one that will sit very well with consumers. Don't you just wish all your digital content was managed like this? Never having to worry where you left the disc, or worry that if you changed computers, you'd never get to play your computer game again.

This is what the future should look like - where everything that's digitally mine, is mine. And locked up somewhere nicely on the Internetz.
