Colorado BDR
Tumblr media
The monkeys and Sophia all assembled as planned in Denver and we spent the better part of the evening doing final preparations for our launch.  The weather was looking bleak as fresh snows in the Rockies and Southern Wyoming were clearly going to throw wrenches into our plans.  Cosmo did what she does best and developed a set of alternate plans in case we ran into the unexpected.  Which we did on day one of the trip.
Our plan had been to make our way to Eagle, Colorado, drop the motos off, and reverse Section 4 of the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route in the Jeep.  There are several sections of the COBDR which we had not done yet, and this plan would allow us to tick off one of those boxes.  Unfortunately, within the first 40 miles, we ran into a short, but crucial road closure that the US Forest Service had done to protect the soft clay road from damage due to the unexpectedly late rain and snow.  While it might have been a bummer, we looked at it optimistically as it allowed us to shake out a few kinks in our loading and we got to check out an area we had not seen.
Tumblr media
Day 2 arrived soon enough.  This was a day which we were eagerly awaiting...  a full BDR day on Section 5 with both the bikes and the Jeep.  While the route itself is not hard, as usual, it provided a few moments of short gasps as some of the more rocky sections followed precipitous old jeep roads.  Those moments behind us, section five took us deep into the remote backcountry along the Upper Colorado River basin through beautiful areas that few people get to explore.
The end of the day saw us taking a few detours along the course to avoid obvious thunderstorms, but we still finished strong in beautiful Steamboat Springs.  After an excellent dinner and a walk about town and checking the weather and road closures, we had worked up a new plan to skip the BDR section 6, which we had previously done, and make a dash deep into Wyoming.

Image by Pierce Martin My father riding his KLR650 through the San Juans on one of the many amazing roads we discovered on the COBDR (Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route). This is a motorcycle route that starts in the four corners and winds its way all the way up Wyoming, all on back roads. This is just some of the amazing scenery we witnessed!

With summer just around the corner it's a good time to plan rides in the High Country, and the adventure riding doesn't get much better than in Colorado. Take on the High Rockies 14ers perhaps? Or maybe scratch the COBDR off your bucket list? How about this year's KTM Adventure Rider Rally in Breckenridge? One way to do it if you live far away is a Fly'n Ride trip. Fly to Grand Junction, CO and pick up a rental from our friends at MotoDiscovery. They've got a fleet of adventure-ready CRF250L's, WR250R's, DRZ's, and Africa Twins to choose from. Plus they can hook you up with riding gear, maps or GPS equipment if you need it. For details go to bit.ly/coloradoadv or CLICK PHOTO.

Day 4 - I Got High...
I woke to a beautiful morning in Basalt, CO.  Drastically different from the day before.  I got my gear around and got some breakfast.  I was able to see the gentlemen from OH before I left.  We did a little routine bike maintenance and I was off.  I was getting high today.  Altitude...
First up, Hagerman pass.  The guys at Colorado Motorcycle Adventures said if I could do Hagerman, I could do anything on the COBDR.  I have to admit I was anxious the whole way to the start point.  It was brilliant.  I had so much fun. Without a doubt the most exhausting and technical riding I have ever done. It was amazing.  The air was thin at the top.  That didn't stop me from getting a glamour shot of the bike.

After that is was on to Westin Pass.  Another amazing ride.  Not as hard, but fun.

Way up there.  Elevation 11,921 Feet
After that it was a challenging ride through the Aspen forest on a single track.  Is was really challenging because it was on a camber.  Not much room for error on either side.  I also got to do several water crossings.  The final one threw me off the bike and bruised my knee as well as knocked the wind out of me.  I picked up and got going again.  I then headed in to Buena Vista for Tacos.  After that I found my place for the night in Salida, CO.  Tomorrow should prove to be another challenging day.

Keep an eye out for a special posting.  I did some amateur editing of my film for the day.  3 1/2 hours till it publishes to youtube.  This wifi is slow!

Second Annual ADVWoman Rally set for Colorado I am woman hear me roar. On dual-sports too big to ignore. Actually, men are welcome too, at what sounds like a great time in Colorado this summer, and they might even learn something from the all-woman instructor corps. Here’s the lowdown: GRANBY, COLORADO, February 9, 2017 – Second Annual woman-led ADVWoman Rally dates Announced for July 20-23, 2017, at Flying Heels Rodeo Arena in Granby, Colorado Dates are announced for the second annual adventure rally organized for women and families. To be held July 20-23, 2017, in Granby, Colorado, the event will include a variety of self-guided rides, Geocache scavenger hunt, classroom training sessions as well as on-range adventure and dirt bike rider training. All instructors are women! Men are welcome too – this is a female and family friendly rally. “We are building on last year’s success with several key changes,” said Pat Jacques, Rally Director. “BMW Off Road instructor Caroline Stevenson has joined the teaching staff, plus the rally is expanded to four days, Thursday through Sunday. We have obtained indoor convention space, and have hotel accommodations available. We will teach on-range rider training ‘Adventure Essentials’ and ‘Dirt Bike Essentials’, and we’ve added the advanced level ‘BDR Essentials’ class. This will support riders in successfully completing the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route teaching steep ascents and descents, hair pin turns, water crossings, and rocky terrain skills.” Last year’s Rally was a great success with several participants traveling over 1800 miles to attend. “I knew the ladies would have a blast, but I was most surprised by how much the gentlemen enjoyed themselves,” said Jacques. “They were thrilled to see their spouses and partners quickly gain confidence and skill, which translates to more opportunities to enjoy riding together and also strengthens the industry.” Classroom Sessions are open to all attendees and will run Thursday & Friday 3:30PM-4:30PM and 4:45-5:45PM, with several classes running simultaneously in different locations. Topics include trailside maintenance, trailside first aid, intro to GPS navigation, fitness and training for off-road riding, truck & trailer motorcycle loading and unloading, flat tire repair, how to pick up a bike, moto-camping and travel photography. “Women teaching women is natural and transformative. We’re excited to have Canadian GS Trophy Candidate and BMW Off-Road Certified Instructor Caroline Stevenson joining our all-woman staff this year. Caroline’s quiet, confident manner and considerable skill is sure to resonate with many women,” said Jacques. Immediately following the Rally there will be a “First Ever” All-ladies Colorado Backcountry Discovery (COBDR) Tour led by Jacques and fellow adventure rider Alisa Clickenger. All classes are taught Thursday and Friday so participants can enjoy a full day of adventure riding on Saturday. http://ift.tt/1VAmrKZ Second Annual ADVWoman Rally set for Colorado appeared first on Motorcycle.com News.

Completed the #COBDR with @mygsadventures North to South ending in Four Corners NM in 100 degree desert heat. A change from the 50 degree Alpine temps that morning. What a good time! We then drove back North for the #TopOfTheRockies rally by the BMW club of Colorado. Long day of riding, but had a lot of fun and met some great people along the way.
