Blanca Flight Suit by Closet Core Patterns
So I posted a big post about my mock up of this flight suit and I loved it so much i really regretted not making it in a better fabric for the mock up.
Tumblr media
So I used a Lurex Woven Jacquard Fabric Green I got from Minerva in the last sale. It's poly and woven and dead-stock so they consider it 'earth friendly' but I'm on the fence about that.
I made a single alteration to the patter, which was to lengthen the 'crotch' seam by an inch. Although the fit was good in the mock up, I wanted to completely remove the chance of this riding up and pulling on the neck.
Tumblr media
This worked amazingly and I can sit like a pretzel without choking.
I also added short sleeves.
I love this pattern so much. It's so easy to sew up and the end results have really blown me away! I'd really like to get better pictures of this one, as the flowers are actually gold metallic, it's just really hard to see.
I need to make a proper belt to go with this, as I'm using the belt I made with the mock up. I think this would look so good with any belt.
I'd give this pattern a solid 10/10 - It's easy to follow, looks just like the image, and gives you options for sleeves and length of the trousers.
This fabric is a little softer than the cotton I used for the mock up and shifted a little when sewing, but the pattern is forgiving and I think you can't really make a few mistakes without it showing.
Th drape on this fabric means this is softer and less structured, but it would also look amazing in denim or something!
(just less flattering pics on the cut)

Update on Fall Sewing Goals
Tumblr media
Me, next to a giant pumpkin, at the Stillwater Autumn Fest
Fall might be my new favorite season! This year I am fully leaning into the pumpkin-spiced lattes, autumn outfits, and slower pace of life. My creativity tends to peak in the summer (thank you, sun!) and by October or November the ideas that were bursting to life in my brain are settling like falling leaves. In the past I didn't appreciate that, but as I get older I have realized that it's totally okay to not be on 100 all year round. Constantly creating takes a toll on my mental health and my budget.
In my last blog, I talked about goals for clothing/sewing projects that will last me a long a time. I don't want to be buying new fabric every month and making garments that I can't wear and love for years to come. So here is an update on the progress I've made concerning those goals.
Finding a pants pattern that I love
I tried to make the #PietraPants by #ClosetCorePatterns . I adjusted the pattern for my body, but this found that fit to be baggy and boxy. I am rectangle shaping, with my bust, waist, and hip measurements being within inches of each other, and I found that the wide leg Pietra Pants didn't accentuate my legs or butts in the way I wanted.
My next attempt is going to be a 50's style Cigarette Pant. I like the slimmer fit and it will hopefully display my assets more than a wide leg pant. I found a promising sewing pattern/instruction guide on how to make a cigarette pant based on personal measurements. I like it because I wanted a vintage pattern but couldn't find a lot available in my size.
Tumblr media
Plus Size (or any size) Vintage 1950s Pants Pattern - PDF
The pattern is from Etsy and is described as such: "it's a drafting system...whether you want this garment for a doll or plus-size person you will be able to make this fit perfectly."
2. Learning to clean my wool sweaters.
I have made some progress here! I washed one camel-hair cardigan and one wool turtleneck. By hand washing the garments I hoped to preserve the shape of each one. The washing part was easy; the hard part was the drying. Both garments took almost four days to air dry; I tried to squeeze the water out of the sweater and I stretched it. The cardigan and sweater are still very wearable so I'd call this a success.
3. Billowing, pleated skirt
I haven't started this project yet, but I did realize that I can't just add pleats to a skirt that already has the waistband attached. My next step is to draft a skirt in a fabric I like and try making pleats!
4. Using fabric I already own
My aunt gifted me some really pretty fabric from South Africa earlier this year. I decided to use it to make a kaftan from my partner's birthday in July. It was only this week that I actually looked up a tutorial and cut the fabric. The kaftan looks nice, but he hasn't tried it on yet so we will see! I'm just glad to be tackling some of my stash and using what I have.
Tumblr media
The pieces cut for a men's kaftan. This is before I attached the pieces together or cut out the neck hole.
I think I will do another blog post for this kaftan alone because the project has been super fun and surprisingly easy. Also, I want to share the finished look!
Signing off,
Gabriella

I whipped up this sewing machine cover last weekend thanks to a pattern from #closetcorepatterns. I got the purple piping and jacquard fabric from #auburnfabricoutlet (my new favorite place to shop... Everything is literally $2.99/yard!). Now I don't have to worry about dust bunnies in my machine and curious little fingers finding my scissors when I want to leave my wips out overnight! #closetcorecovers #sewing #sewingaddict https://www.instagram.com/p/CMU5TJ7nwag/?igshid=m80k74mamt9p

Petit à petit. J’ai épinglé la parementure aujourd’hui. J’adore que les instructions donnent une direction de couture pour l’encolure. C’est important, c’est la différence entre ça baille ou ça baille pas. 🧵 Little by little. I pinned the facing today. I love that the instructions give you a sewing direction for them. It’s important, it’s the difference between a gape or no gape. 🧵 Well done @closetcorepatterns 👏👏👏 https://instagr.am/p/CTmTop5N5ck/

Annnnnd.... I'm done!
This was my test fit for the Blanka Flight Suit by Closet Core Patterns and I'm in love. I really look my time with these as I really find myself cutting corners a lot - esp with finishing and top-stitching and things. The material is a poly cotton from Ikea and is really thin and low quality and I have LOADS so I'm using it as muslin. The zipper is white, I know - but I didn't have anything else this size when I started (typical, they arrived today).
However, as I new I'd not be getting a lot of wear out of this I wasn't precious about the zip. I might take it out at a later date if I feel like it.
So - first thing - the pattern was FANTASTIC. Instructions were clear, complete, matched the pictures shown and were very beginner friendly. I cut this in a size 18UK and it's a perfect fit for me. It's also very flattering. It does come with two sleeve options which I was going to do, but ended up realizing that I'm def a bit partial to sleeveless, and I feel hardcore.
This took two weekends to sew, I'm a slow sewer and worked on this pretty sporadically - if you were sitting and WORKING, I'd say 2 days.
The actual jumpsuit is... fantastically comfortable. There is enough ease that I can sit criss cross without cutting myself in half, and I'm currently wearing it sitting in my chair with both legs tucked up with zero crotch issues. I do have to put the zipper down a LITTLE so it's not RIGHT at my throat but I'm a long person and I have to do that with EVERYTHING.
I can't belive its taken me so long to try these 'indie' patterns and each one of them so far has been a total delight. Although this isn't the best fabric and it attracts fluff and cat hair like a magnet, I'm keeping this on. I'm sooooo happy with how this turned out.
The actual pattern has different options and layouts, zipped pockets and sleeves to pick from. There is a LOT of topstitching so this is a thread hungry fabric, but who cares when it looks this good at the end?
The PDF version of the pattern is £14.25, printed it is £17.25 + postage.
The total cost to me was: 5 yards of DITTE fabric at £3 a yard, a zipper from an old bedspread, and the pattern. I didn't bother with interfacing because this is just a tester, but it holds up okay without. I used almost two bobbins (which is how I measure thread).
I would give this 10/10 for a beginner OR experienced sewer. The end result is super lovely. I can't wait to remake it!

Finally finished the shirt - I'm calling this the "watermelon tunic" and I'm really happy with how it turned out.
The fabric is a light cotton from Mood Fabric (yes I love this shop okay? Buying it makes me feel like I know what I'm doing). It's called the Rose and Green lightweight cotton twill, and it was on sale.
It frays like a motherfucker because it's more of a lightweight weave. However it's cute as fuck and I love it so much. I have discovered what I love is a large check. I enjoy looking like a tablecloth.
It's made with the Kalle Pattern from Closet Core, which is another 'indie' brand I've tried out now, and I was quite happy with the instructions. I would say that it's not AS clear as the Friday Pattern Co, but it's still miles better than the big 4. Very beginner friendly.
I made the mistake of trying to make the bias tape out of this fraying fabric and it was a nightmare. I did manage it, but I'm not super happy with the end result on this - the hem is... not the best work I've done.
I think this DOES need a button but I'm not going to put one in - I used to get a loot crate so I have a LOT of pins and I'm just gonna use those as buttons!
Tumblr media
I don't want to be like 'modesty required' but like, my whole titty could fly out of this collar. I think if you were wearing like a nice bralette or you made this as a pullover for the beach in a lighter / see-through fabric it would be totally fine. But my beige 38 DD bra isn't giving those vibes.
So I love this tunic and I get to wear fun pins.
(I'm still not up for pattern matching)

The problem with sewing jeans and some rather bulk seams: there may be casulties. #closetcoremorgan #closetcorepatterns #sewing #sewersofinstagram #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #diystyle #handmade #wearhandmade #ilovesewing #garmentsewing #handmadefashion #sewcialists #diyfashion #ilovesewing #indiepatterns #sewingpattern #instasew #Sewingisfun #memadewardrobe — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/3GXfD59

And all three finished. I made a cutting mistake with the front pocket pieces so I didn't had enough for a third pair of back pockets. But the pieced together and embroidered pockets look like an intentional design choice and I really fell in love with them. #closetcoremorgan #closetcorepatterns #sewing #sewersofinstagram #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #diystyle #handmade #wearhandmade #ilovesewing #garmentsewing #handmadefashion #sewcialists #diyfashion #ilovesewing #indiepatterns #sewingpattern #instasew #Sewingisfun #memadewardrobe — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2XXFRTc

Look at all the pieces cut out for my jeans. I changed the pocket pattern form the pattern because I need large pockets and I really like the way jeanspockets fit when you have them extanded to the zipper front. #closetcoremorgan #closetcorepatterns #sewing #sewersofinstagram #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #diystyle #handmade #wearhandmade #ilovesewing #garmentsewing #handmadefashion #sewcialists #diyfashion #ilovesewing #indiepatterns #sewingpattern #instasew #Sewingisfun #memadewardrobe #tardis #doctorwho — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2Z3lqoo
