So obviously nothing can beat the now-notorious Team Snagem Biden, but Colosseum is just a hidden trove of nonsense names, and I wanted to share some other highlights. Come to Orre, we have stellar names such as:
Tumblr media
White suburban mom's hot take on spelling "Simon";
Tumblr media
The letter H;
Tumblr media
Would it be better or worse if this kid was a single child?
Tumblr media
Gara, like from Naruto; yes I know that's not the spelling shh
Tumblr media
Senton G, possibly the only guy to have a last name implied in the entire region (it's more likely a typo but funnier to consider it this way);
Tumblr media
Everyone's favorite Super Mario villain, Bowber;
Tumblr media
Guy who says you should try giving pokemon battles a warl;
Tumblr media
Git gud, Skrub (who is a recurring character);
Tumblr media
Gort.
Tumblr media
And lastly, "we could try pronouncing this as crew-doh but let's be real, absolutely no one is going to choose to read it that way."

Tell me about your Marxist analysis on pokemon XD
:3
i live in a college dorm please pay for the wall or they’re gonna charge me $10000+ please please pls pl
anyway.
I’d like to first establish that the Pokémon in Pokémon XD are something akin the proletariat—the working/laboring class. Pokémon XD and Colosseum introduce the mechanic of “shadow Pokémon,” where Pokémon are literally manufactured in a factory that “closes their hearts,” turning them into nothing but mindless battle machines. Shadow Pokémon are aggressive, may attack opposing trainers, and hurt themselves in their rage.
This is all for a pokémon that is nothing but a mindless battle machine—it is literally separating pokémon from their labor. The Pokémon’s personhood (Pokemonhood?) is dismissed simply for the value they possess in exerting power. in addition to the fact that shadow Pokémon are both laborers and products that are sold and distributed, and this echoes how the labor of the proletariat are devalued, seen as “lessers” merely to be used. They are just as much products as they are the means of production.
There’s also the fact that shadow Pokémon aren’t created from conception however—they’re pokémon that were stolen from their trainers and turned into shadow Pokémon. So, in a sense, Pokemon XD comments how the modes of production require foul play in order to sustain constant productivity, and the proletariat are then manipulated and morphed by the bourgeoisie, stolen from their homes, and have the burden placed on their shoulders. Of course, I’m going very surface level with this analysis but you can read the stealing of Pokémon for shadow Pokémon production in other ways.
Anyway, what makes Pokémon XD, and the GameCube Pokémon games in general, different from most other Pokémon media is just how different the orre region is because orre is uniquely low-income.
This is more apparent in the first game, Pokémon Colosseum, where every location is rife with some level of crime and poverty. The buildings are often dated and worn down, there are no established roads between areas (you have to motorbike/scooter through barren desert), the land is so dry and barren that no wild Pokémon exist within the region, and—importantly—the people of orre are rude.
This is less apparent in XD because Michael is a literal child, but in Colosseum, a large portion of NPCs insult and belittle Wes or Rui. In a sense, Colosseum comments how people in poverty can’t afford to be “nice”—niceness itself is a luxury, and this is also highlighted in the high crime rate in Orre. Even Wes himself is a thief and probably murderer, even if the game never explicitly shows anyone dying.
But the brunt of Orre’s poverty however is how a massive global corporation such as Cipher can operate and fly under the radar in orre. Orre does not have the means nor power to stop Cipher from setting up their main base of operations there because unlike every other pokémon region, there is no established “league” or “government.”
So of course the people of Orre buy into Cipher’s plans and often propagate shadow Pokémon because there is nothing else they can do. It’s them versus this massive corporation that suddenly started taking over and buying up land and stealing their Pokémon if they don’t comply (they do this with Duking).
The inhabitants of Orre then too must operate within Cipher outside their own volition. It’s akin to how the bourgeois in the real world occupy low-income areas, buy out every other property, and eventually take over every aspect of a region. When more rural land owners don’t comply, the bourgeois will develop as close to their property as possible and drive them out of their conformity.
Even the location of Phenac City is a literal gentrified area, the only city in the deep desert that has water and literally housed the region head of a global organization. For what is the most “developed” modern city in the game (that isn’t built into a fucking tree), it makes sense that it would be run by Cipher in this way. It allows Cipher to operate on a level of plausible deniability—haven’t they brought this wonderful city to Orre? Haven’t they helped its people? Perhaps corporations can be good for “helping” people via charity.
All they gotta do is give a Pokémon or two (or steal a Pokémon or two) to Cipher and never say anything about their rulers.
This is the Orre region. It isn’t just one city taken over by a big bad—this is an entire Pokémon region and its main trade being completely at the mercy of a global corporation.
It’s important to note just how wealthy, then, Cipher is. Specifically, its CEO—Grandmaster Greevil. Also known as the wealthy philanthropist—Mr. Verich.
Michael meets Greevil as Mr. Verich, whose bodyguard saves him from a street thug. This is painted as an act of kindness or charity—like kissing a baby on camera—but this deed becomes much more insidious when it’s revealed that Mr. Verich manufactured the whole situation in the first place. That street thug attacked Michael because he wanted to show off a shadow Pokémon. Mr. Verich only saved Michael so that the presence of shadow Pokémon wouldn’t alert the public.
Billionaires perform acts of charity as a smokescreen for the actual harm they may cause, whilst endearing themselves to the public eye. For Greevil, saving Michael just so happened to coincide with his intended goal that doubled as a means to increase his public image.
Greevil is also very well liked by the people of Orre, especially in Gateon Port. The sailors at the diner all cheer his name because Mr. Verich will often pay for all of their tabs, letting them eat free for the day. The novelist, a friend of Michael’s, calls Mr. Verich interesting and intends to write a book idolizing the man’s good deeds and character. There’s an old woman who’s in love with Mr. Verich—people fucking love this guy for existing and being rich.
The bourgeois’ charity is not only celebrated but idolized—worshipped, but this “kindness” is merely an act to further their control. Mr. Verich isn’t merely doing this out of the kindness of his heart nor as a smokescreen for his more nefarious side—it’s so he can gain control over the only means of trade Orre has so that he may distribute shadow Pokémon globally more easily. The rich can not only “afford” niceness, but this niceness itself is a commodity that can be bought using wealth to gain more capital.
So in XD, Michael essentially acts as a “union man” by unionizing the pokémon in an act of ideological un-brainwashing via “purification”, which “opens the heart” of a shadow pokémon. The act of purification in XD is interesting because it emphasizes community between pokémon, synergizing their strengths and weaknesses into something impenetrable, and healing them from being mindless laborers for capitalism.
Michael is uniquely free from capitalistic forces for two reasons 1) he’s a child and therefore able to “imagine a world without capitalism,” and 2) he kinda grew up in a commune. Like, if you think about it, the purification lab is a self-sustaining commune that supports its inhabitants and encourages gradual but effective scientific progression in the Purify Chamber. Michael is the “big Communism builder,” and the Purification Pokémon lab is the commune.
I think the difference in scientific progression of the Purification Lab compared to Cipher’s Shadow Pokémon Lab also needs to be stated:
The creation of XD001–Shadow Lugia—and the mass production of shadow pokémon also illustrates how science and scientific “progress” is largely determined by what the top 1% will put their money into. How streamlined scientific progress is for the Pokémon equivalent of mass bioweapons.
But, in the uniquely communist society that Michael grew up in, Pokemon XD reveals that communism is not a stalling of scientific progress but simply a change in the intentions of it. In a capitalistic society, science is driven by capital and the bourgeois. In a communist society, science is driven by a mutual interest in a common societal “good.”

Pokemon XD AU idea
That one bogus rumor about Pokemon XD claims that Wes was supposed to be the villain of XD (Thank you “Did Yuo Know Gaming”).
But Pokemon Colosseum had a Wes imposter (Cipher Peon Fein, according to the wiki).
So what if Cipher had waited until Wes & Rui left the region then used Fein/a Wes imposter act as the head of Cipher to besmirch his name?

Wonderful Things That May or May Not Be Wonderful!!! Pokemon Colosseum, much like its portable brethren, knew how to have a bangin soundtrack. How bangin? The main villain team for this outing is Team Cipher. Instead of calling their lowest ranked members “grunts” like every other villain team, they call them “peons” which is ten times as demeaning a term. They also look absolutely ridiculous with absolutely ridiculous names like Skrub and Arton and unlike Team Skull and Team Yell in later games, they’re supposed to be a serious threat. Yet with this song blasting, every time you pick a fight with them, they are suddenly one hundred times cooler and more formidable than any team that came before or after (well, at least before). That base line, that electric guitar, that violin that gives me secret agent vibes. Ooooh, it gives me all the goose pimples. Seriously, the Orre games have some stellar music. Maybe I will divulge more another time but this battle theme is wonderful enough for now. P.S. I could only find a link for the 30 minute version. Just thought I'd let people know.

Okay I am on an Orre kick lately and so it is time to tell you about my thoughts on if Orre had a Pokemon League
I don't have the gym leaders figured out yet entirely, but I do have eight locations for gyms in mind and where the Pokemon League itself would be featured. I'll list some names for potential gym leaders of each area too from pre-existing characters only. Should note this is working under the assumption of being set sometime after XD, so unfortunately The Under is inoperable.
Also, there wouldn't really be an order of which gym to challenge. You think the governmental structure of Orre is organized enough to let that happen? They probably can barely cobble together a list of who is a recognized gym leader and who isn't.
So with that, here is the list below the cut:
The Gyms:
Phenac City
Okay so this one is kind of a gimme answer because there is literally already a gym there of sorts. There's really not much to say other than obviously Justy is getting the promotion he deserves of being an actual official gym leader. The type of gym could be a toss-up of Ground, Water or Grass given the multiple environments inside of it. If not Justy, then perhaps bring back Trudly and Folly as double gym leaders like Tate and Liza, or even potentially have a triple battle with Bluno, Verde, and Rosso for a Fire, Water, Grass core.
Gateon Port
It is tradition to always have a port city host a gym in Pokemon, and Orre would be no different. I feel like pulling an Olivine would be fun, except this time have the Lighthouse actually be the gym itself as opposed to just where you find the gym leader. The typing would most likely be Water given the setting, or possibly Steel even given the machine shop. Some potential gym leaders could be Miror B since he performs at the Krabby Club, Perr assuming he's still helping at the machine shop and his position in Kids Grid/ONBS probably got him some cred, or maybe if he turned over a new leaf, even Zook.
Pyrite Town
We are continuing the train of the obvious choices, don't worry, the weirder ones are saved for the last few because unsurprisingly, Crime The Region doesn't have many actual towns. I feel like Pyrite would probably convert the Pyrite Colosseum into its gym, or perhaps they could go salvage a part of The Under and use its remains for it. For gym leaders, the first one that comes to mind would be Cail given that he calls himself the gatekeeper of Pyrite. Other potential candidates would be Duking as the unofficial leader of the town, Silva, who Duking left in charge of Pyrite Colosseum, or even Agnol, the Deep King of the Deep Colosseum who odds are was likely a part of Cipher. Potentially even Reath and Ferma to do the double gym leaders act like Trudly and Folly. The trainers of Pyrite actually are all pretty varied in type, so you could take your pick with any of them here. Potentially Rock or Ground simply to represent the history of the mines.
Agate Village
The last of the actual towns in game, Agate with its cliffside and waterfall and the forest and cave leading to the Relic Stone provides a good handful of locales to host a gym. Maybe there's another giant tree around we didn't notice aside from Eagun's house and something like White Tree from Pokemon White could happen. For types, a lot of the trainers use Pokemon who share a typing of Bug or Poison, and of course the obvious potential Grass motif. As for potential gym leaders, there's the obvious pick of Eagun himself considering he is the only significant NPC who lives there, and if so he's still sporting that Pikachu making him an Electric leader. Other than him, you could potentially have Rui make a return as gym leader. Or I dunno, bring back Skrub the peon. Early internet meme days all over again for the Skrub Lord.
Eclo Canyon
Probably more commonly remembered as the Team Snagem Hideout. Perhaps not the strangest idea really, you could refurbish the blown-to-smithereens base into a nice sized gym, or perhaps some kind of multi-faceted company building or factory. For a gym leader, you have any of Team Snagem members in Gonzap, or the three main grunts in Wakin, Biden, and Agrev. Clearly, all of them end up being capable battlers if you can fight them at such high levels in the post game colosseums. Along with them, you could have Wes himself here as a gym leader, but I feel like if he was involved in the League at all, it would either be as Champion, chairman, or more than likely just not involved with it at all and disappearing into the desert, and serving as a potential superboss in the post game. Aside from him, potentially bring back the imposter Fein, acting like Wes once again only to reveal it wasn't him at all and you just got your hopes up. As for types, uh, I dunno, Steel or Poison I guess, that was Snagem's MO.
Cipher Lab
If it hadn't been taken over by Cipher yet again by now, I feel like this lab would probably be converted into a proper research facility by the governing body of the region, or perhaps become an extension of the Pokemon HQ Lab. As for who the gym leader would be, assuming that all former Cipher members are arrested, the next best choice could be Chobin who might have gotten a better job here instead of working for Kaminko. Aside from him, there is of course Ein or Lovrina, though I think even if all Cipher members weren't rounded up by now, those two would definitely be ones put behind bars for crimes against Pokemon. Though some Cipher members who might work, and bear with me, could be the Hexagon Brothers. These six bumbling fools are definitely not there in scientific capacities, and odds are they most likely are more hazardous to the research being conducted anyways. However, having six different type specialists there would probably serve as great resources for research data on certain Pokemon. They could be a collective gym leader like how Cilan, Cress, and Chili were in Unova, and perhaps depending on the day or other external factors, that determines which one you face for the badge. If not them, more than likely this place would be an Electric gym.
Pokemon HQ Lab
Speaking of labs, the Pokemon HQ Lab I also think could potentially serve as a gym for one specific reason. If there ever was a "first gym" to do in the game, it would most likely be here, specifically because of the Battle Sims system. With that being what is supposed to serve as a tutorial system, I could see it easily being converted into an advanced challenge for beginning trainers, where if you can defeat it and win a badge, then you could probably face any gym. While yes, Realgam Tower is where the advanced Battle Sims happen, I have a different purpose in mind for it that you can probably guess. This way you technically don't have to have anyone be the gym leader at all, the computer itself already is. Though I suppose if you wanted a physical named NPC in charge who could potentially provide a final battle, there's Professor Krane, Lily, Jovi, and of course Michael himself. Unlike Wes, I could actually see Michael being more likely to be involved in the League as an opponent, and if not in the Elite 4/as Champion, then here as a Gym Leader. This gym probably wouldn't have any one type if Michael was the leader except for maybe Normal because of Eevee. If not, then again perhaps Electric, especially if Jovi was the leader with her Plusle and Minun.
Cipher Key Lair
Our last gym is the former Cipher Key Lair, that creepy pyramid now being converted into the world's most off-putting office space. I imagine if Clay ever had a gym in Orre instead of Unova, it would have been this. That aside, I feel like you already have a potentially cool gym challenge based on the exterior. Move those stones around and create a mini labyrinth to get inside, and then begin the ascension to the head office building just like before. Only instead of Gorigan awaiting you at the end, you have someone totally different. Some potential candidates are Zook again here instead of at Gateon Port, or perhaps Eldes since unlike Greevil and his brother Ardos, it felt like he became a better person by the end of XD. Potentially if you wanted to upgrade the ONBS station/former Kids Grid again, move them from Pyrite to being based out of here, and you could have any choice of Nett, Megg, Bitt, Secc, Marcia, or Perr if you move him from Gateon to be the leader. As for type, like Pyrite there really isn't any one choice here, perhaps Normal, Ground, or Fighting.
The Pokemon League:
Realgam Tower
So this was probably obvious, but Realgam Tower is just the perfect location for a big finale. Piercing the skies, a symbol of greed, avarice and the arrogance of humanity, having played a role in a couple crises in Orre already. Now though, it has been purified itself, becoming the home of the Pokemon League. The colosseum in the sky, standing high above the rest of the region, is the perfect place to have the final gauntlet of the gym challenge.
As for who runs this joint, I have a couple ideas, none of them fully concrete. For the Elite 4, I was thinking about a handful of candidates, such as Willie, Cail, Eldes, Miror B, Agnol, Eagun, or any number of Area Leaders from Mt. Battle like Vander or Battlus/Somek. Potentially could have it consist of a mixture of the other past Cipher members as well, like Dakim, Lovrina, Nascour, or maybe even Gonzap.
As for the Champion, I feel like it just would have to be either Wes or Michael. More than likely it would be Michael, simply because I do not see Wes wanting to have all the focus on him, let alone stay in a pretentious place like Realgam Tower all the time. Though considering there was the beta concept of Wes being the second leader of Cipher instead of Greevil, I suppose that is entirely possible. You could still very easily make Wes the leader of Cipher version three, and have him be the champion on top with all the money in the world with the betting battles and the casino below. Either way, it could work.
As for whichever of the two of them isn't Champion, then I feel like they would be the superboss of the game. Perhaps you could travel back to Citadark Isle and find them back at the top of the old Cipher HQ and square off with them. After beating them there, you would unlock them as the final gauntlet of the Orre Colosseum, which still is the criminal underworld final challenge not regulated by the League. Away from the public eye in the middle of nowhere desert, just battling for the sake of battling.
And those are all my ideas right now! I had some other potential location ideas such as the S.S. Libra, or perhaps recreating The Under and using the subway, or the Outskirt Stand. I am still formulating a bit of a story in my head, but if you have any thoughts of your own, I would love to hear them!

So. I've got bad news and bad news. How do I even start? Let's go with my current situation: Please help me. I have been captured by Team Cipher. They've turned Comet the Suicune back into a shadow pokemon. I saw her three days ago, and she broke my right arm. Cipher is letting me have some time to recover, but they're going to want results soon, and they don't exactly like me, for obvious reasons if you've been seeing my posts. I'm not actually supposed to be able to post this, buuut their network isn't actually all that secure from the inside.
I guess it's not completely bad, though, I managed to get the cipher admin that originally got me into this whole mess kicked out of the team. He intercepted me while I was travelling between cities, and I finally had to do what I'd been dreading and running away from all this time: battle him. And boy did he kick my ass. Took down five members of my team, and only lost two himself.
But!
I didn't name my slowbro Event Horizon for nothing. I managed to get him stuck in an endless battle against me. Apparently, this, along with my "evil laugh" and "villain monologue" managed to impress him enough to offer me a job as a Cipher Admin. The pay was pretty damn good too, but I told him to get bent. I have no idea what he was talking about anyway, I was just laughing because I was stressed out of my mind and needed an outlet, and ranting angrily for much the same reason. Plus, you try getting chased all around a region for a month and not holding a grudge against the person responsible for it.
And guess what? None of that ended up mattering, because once he got bored of watching his vaporeon struggle against the brick wall that was Hori, my slowbro, he just got the cipher peons who'd been there all along to knock me and Hori out.
Well, maybe it wasn't all for nothing. Said peons had been recording the whole thing, and while he didn't seem to care about what I said, he was pissed when the video spread around team Cipher. Like, had a huge argument with the other admins over wanting me dead pissed. It probably didn't help that, after kidnapping me, he had a pretty public confrontation with me, where I told him that all he'd done was get himself humiliated while his peons did all the work of actually taking me down. Which somehow got said peons to side with me against him.
This whole debacle, was, from what I gather, the last straw that led to him getting kicked out and one of the grunts under his command being promoted to replace him.
I'm... really not okay. I mean, yeah, my right arm's broken, and I don't think I can escape like that. But Comet is very clearly hurting, and I just... have no idea what I can do to help her. I keep coming up with escape plans. But I have no idea how to get her out with me. And I'm not leaving without her.

My design for Verde, the bayleef user Cipher peon in Colosseum, alongside his signature shadow pokemon
I decided to give him a nest ball, since i thought it would kinda match with the green theme.

she sends a peon who's already in bad standing in cipher, with no knowledge of anything beyond his own assignments with the pokemon for him. a vulpix, ready to bite as soon as it would be released from it's cage.
There was a reason he wore gloves. Thick material that has the underlayer of what was likely kelvar. His own movements were quick, careful, efficient...yet somehow gentle. Moved to simply open the grab, first grabbing the snout and jaw of the vulpix, holding it tightly closed so that it couldn't bite anyone--let alone him. He adjust his grip, then moved his other hand to lift out the creature's body.
Tumblr media
" it's a shame. what they've done to you... "
He hummed lightly, gaze moving up at down the snarling fire type, no mind, only a closed heart and an instinct to attack. How he despised his technology even be related to the process at all, if not for the benefits made through the process being discovered--and purification being actively researched...A testing ground, and as unfortunate as it was, Orre would always be that.
He just wished it could be restricted to the people...rather than the pokemon. Even so, he didn't look angry in that moment, a smile soon creeping over his lips as he flicked a finger for one of the scientists to come over with a syringe in hand.
" don't worry though...you'll be very useful, and at the end of it all, your heart will be open again, you will be free. "
He hummed, his grip tightening to restrain any movements as his fellow scientist pierced the needle into the creature's neck. A silver-like fluid flowing into it's body, causing it to briefly convulse before passing out. Finally, his hand released the jaw of the vulpix and he moved it to simply stroke it's head, holding it close as one might a child.
" you will be just fine...beautiful, even. "
Lysandre held the creature a little longer, before setting it down on a table next to a rather strange looking device. He then glanced towards the Peon, softness fading as soon as it had came as he glared. The smile on his face just barely still visible.
" your presence is no longer needed, i'm afraid. do take care of this. "
Unfortunately, this one had seen a little too much. The shadow of the head scientist's Malamar spreading overcross the Cipher peon. It will at least be painless.

You know... Right now I think that I want to read some Pokemon fanfic about NPCs so obscure within the Pokemon franchise that they don't even have their own Bulbapedia pages.
Youngster Joey? Too mainstream. Yancy? Get outta here! Talk to me about Tuber Jared from Sinnoh Route 213! Where'd he get those Shellos from!? He's a tiny child. You wouldn't think that he'd be the most well-traveled person out there! How'd he manage to level his Pokemon so high!?
You know. Basically if you decide to write about an NPC THAT obscure, you're more or less creating an OC, but one where you don't really get to pick how they look, their name, or what Pokemon they have. But working within these limitations interest me and I want to see what people do with them!
I may just be saying this because I'm writing a thing where I took two random Cipher Peons, smashed them together and decided that he's a secondary character in this story now. But it honestly is a method for creating OCs that I find interesting and immediately gets me invested and to want to know more about them!
So... Uh... Anyone out there have any fic recs about any EXCEEDINGLY obscure NPCs?
