21/09 - Saigon - Day 2 - Fat girl gets stuck in old war tunnel
Reality check- I got a dodgy belly today.
Not that I knew that until I was sat in the travel agents office waiting for my bus to arrive for a 2 hour journey to the Chu Chi tunnels. The lady I booked my tours with yesterday recognised me, I was the only one going with this particular agent which was a little unnerving but I trusted her for some reason. She told me to go and get some breakfast as I was a little early and it would be a long morning so I walked up the road for a few seconds before settling on a yoghurt from a Circle K shop which is like a Tesco express, I’m so original. I was given the smallest spoon ever with the yoghurt so took this back to the safe zone of the travel agents to scoop millilitre by millilitre into my mouth. She had been out and got herself some kind of solid blooded meaty jelly which was when I started to feel a little jaded, I asked to use their loo which had a locking mechanism of her putting a large fan in front of the door to stop anyone coming in. I started to rethink this whole travelling thing, I could be at home right now feeling normal and in familiar settings! Being ill and knowing you’re going to be on a bus for 2 hours is just mental torture.
Anyway I popped a tab and everything was fine, a little lady came and collected me from the office and I got on a nice air conditioned bus with about 20 other people. There were Austrians, Germans and Spanish on this trip and one Vietnamese couple who were the only people to make eye contact and say hello the whole tour! I didn’t mind this too much as I’d been up until 5am with jet lag and wasn’t feeling that sociable myself.
The tunnels! I didn’t get stuck in a war tunnel, you sickos, Laura told me once that this is called click bait, sorry! I didn’t actually go down the tunnels through fear of getting stuck, my friend Faith and I have an extreme case of the ‘morbid thoughts’ so most of my bus trip there I was wondering what was going to go wrong. I ended up with the scenario that I was going to trip, fall into and get stuck head first in the tunnel, shit myself and then someone would steal my rucksack off my back and I’d have trapped people in the tunnel like a big plug, cut off their air supply and would be responsible for mass murder. When I got there I could see that none of this would even be possible to happen but I’d already resigned myself to stay with the old and claustrophobic up on ground level, there was loads to learn and see other than trying out the actual tunnels and I was glad in hindsight as everyone came out a sweaty mess.
The small rectangle you see below was a photo opportunity, it was a fake tunnel where you get in and put the lid on your head as if you’re leaving the tunnel. After seeing a ‘heavy set’ but smaller than me Korean girl get her hips stuck in here and being air lifted out under the armpits by her husband and another guy from the tour I decided it was a photo i could live without.

The tunnels are a series of dug out rooms underground on different levels with tunnels connecting them, the Vietnamese had whole villages live underground so that there weren’t visible to attacking forces above or on ground, we saw the booby traps they layed, the hide out shooting posts which were just a slit at ground level they’d pop their gun through and the chimneys they used for air supply and getting rid of cooking smoke. Very interesting stuff! At the end of the tour we had some Tapioca which is a tree root and tasted like a sort of sweet boiled potato and you dipped it in peanut, salt and sugar, it was nice but I stuck to my one segment.
Next was the War remnants museum, I fell asleep with my contacts in on the bus back to town, not my smartest move but with a little readjusting I was ready to wake up and learn some more. In hindsight I think 4 nights in Ho Chi Minh would have been better, I was shoe horning the museum into a couple of hours and I was knackered so wasn’t absorbing as much information as I should of. One thing that stuck in my head though was Agent Orange which was a herbicide agent that the US sprayed over huge parts of Vietnam during the war to kill forests etc so they could see where to bomb, of course this killed people too and caused physical and mental defects to them that are still being passed down through generations via DNA.

I left the museum early as I was just getting in peoples way, I was so tired I was reading things 3 times before giving up. I skimmed the rest of the museum which was mainly war photos which were especially harrowing. I ordered a grab taxi to take me home around 5:30pm and had a beautiful nap, with my contacts in, again. I woke up about 6:30pm with very dry eyes and absolutely starving through eating only the yoghurt, a pack of go ahead apple slices I bought from home and the slice of tapioca. It was dark outside and I was feeling groggy so I went upto the restaurant in the hotel for dinner, the views are incredible from the restaurant so I didn’t feel too bad about not leaving the building to eat. I had stir fry noodles with beef which actually came out as a deep fried bowl of noodles, it was delicious and cost about £3 so I was a happy girl.

I packed my bag for tomorrow’s tour and went to sleep, only to awake bright and early at 1am so good morning! I’m going to try and go back to sleep now as I have a 7:30am day trip to the Mekong Delta. Catch you later!
Lots of love,
Rosie
