San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl winner Russ Francis killed in New York plane crash | US News
Tumblr media
Former NFL Player Russ Francis and Ex-US Air Force Commander Die in Plane Crash In a tragic incident, former American football player Russ Francis, aged 70, and Richard McSpadden, aged 63, an ex-US Air Force commander, lost their lives in a plane crash. The accident occurred on a Sunday afternoon when their small aircraft encountered trouble shortly after taking off from an upstate New York airport. The New York State Police reported that their Cessna 177 plane crashed into an embankment at the corner of Lake Placid airport right after departing the runway. Mr. Francis, who achieved Super Bowl victory with the San Francisco 49ers in 1985, was also the president of Lake Placid Airways, a company that offers charter and scenic flights. He held a pilot's license for nearly half a century. During his playing career, he spent 13 seasons as a tight end with both the 49ers and the New England Patriots, earning Pro Bowl selections for the Patriots for three consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1979. Patriots owner Robert Kraft expressed his condolences, saying, "Russ was a fan favorite throughout his playing career. He was a dynamic player on the field who had an even bigger personality off it. He knew no boundaries, pushed the limits, and lived his life to the fullest. Our thoughts are with Russ's family, friends, teammates, and the many Patriots fans who mourn his loss." The San Francisco 49ers also released a statement, expressing their sorrow at the tragic passing of Mr. Francis and extending their deepest condolences to the Francis family during this difficult time. Mr. Francis joined the 49ers in 1982 and was part of the team that secured a Super Bowl victory against Miami in January 1985. He returned to New England in 1987 and retired the following year, leaving behind a remarkable career with a total of 393 catches, 5,262 receiving yards, and 40 touchdowns. Mr. Francis's impressive statistics rank him 21st of all time in catches and 16th in receiving yards for the Patriots, and 30th and 32nd in the same categories for the 49ers. On the other hand, Mr. McSpadden was a senior vice president of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, known for his expertise in aviation safety. His career included a role as the commander of the Thunderbirds, a US Air Force demonstration squadron and display team. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the crash. [ad_1] LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- The small plane crash that killed former NFL tight end Russ Francis and another man at an Adirondack Mountains airport occurred after the craft's engine apparently lost power, a federal investigator said Tuesday.Francis, 70, and Richard McSpadden, 63, had just taken off from the Lake Placid Airport on Sunday afternoon in a single-engine Cessna 177 when the plane encountered trouble. The plane, which has two steering columns, had turned around in an attempt to land, officials said."The engine apparently lost power," National Transportation Safety Board investigator Todd Gunther said at a briefing Tuesday. "The pilot, or pilots in this case, turned back toward the runway."Gunther said the plane hit a berm at the end of the runway and fell about 30 feet into a ravine, according to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise.Multiple witnesses told investigators that the pilots called over the radio to say they had a problem and were returning to the airport, Gunther said.Editor's PicksTwo planes were involved in a planned scenic photoshoot of the 1976 Cessna that Francis and McSpadden were flying. The photographer's plane took off first, followed by the Cessna, according to the newspaper.Francis was a Patriots first-round draft pick in 1975 and played in New England until 1980. He was named to the Pro Bowl three straight seasons from 1977 to 1979. He joined the San Francisco 49ers in 1982 and was part of the 1984 team that beat Miami in the Super Bowl. He returned to New England in 1987 and retired the year after.Francis was a veteran pilot and president of Lake Placid Airways, which runs charter and scenic flights.Gunther said the investigative team will be working in Lake Placid until Friday as they gather material for a preliminary report on the crash. A subsequent final factual report will include analysis and a probable cause for the crash. [ad_2] Source link

Not Smart Enough
Imagine back to when you were in the 8th grade, about 14 years old. You must make a decision that impacts the balance of your time in school. You can take a vocational program, which you attend to grade 12, or a university prep program, which you attend to grade 13. Once you make your decision, you cannot change to the other program. Now, consider being that 8th grade boy and before you make…

Helicopter parenting has gotten a bad rap over the years. It takes a lot of effort, dedication, and money to own a helicopter. That’s why I’ve never done it.
No, I like my pound puppies to stay on the ground. For one thing, you have a couple extra Very Important Bearings for safety, and also it’s slightly easier to walk home from a crash. And another, it’s just plain expensive to buy even a busted-ass old helicopter. This is probably because of low supply: any farmer stupid enough to hold onto sixteen old Sikorskys will probably get strafed by a passing Air Force jet jock that is freaking out about the Top Gun remake while zonko on government-issued methamphetamines.
Still, there is a temptation to get to the open air, the sky. I could buy a plane ticket, but that would involve interacting with other people, not to mention having to empty my pockets of tools for the first time since approximately 1996. Buying a plane is slightly easier than a helicopter, but still requires an investment greater than I am accustomed to, and where would I even work on it? The cops would really notice something is up when they pull up on a dude parked on the curb, pouring hot engine oil out of a Cessna 177 into the storm drain.
That’s why I thought about starting a flying car company. With investor confidence at an all-time high, and investor intelligence at an all-time low, I figured it was the perfect opportunity to come up with some ludicrously expensive horseshit and steal some bankers’ weekend coke money. Step one, as it is with many business plans, is to apply wings to the doors of a Geo Metro. This operation does not require much seed capital: an angle grinder to cut through the lock on the body shop’s dumpster, and you’ve got some expired 3M body adhesive that only smells a little bit like purple. Using that newfound Inhalant Confidence to find a set of unloved plane wings is relatively easy after that, and is left as an exercise for the reader.
Anyway, this is all a long-winded way to say that I’m now on the Tesla board of directors. They really liked my idea for a car that runs entirely on gravity, based on the prototype of my 1996 Neon that doesn’t have a working starter. And their private plane is almost always available for a fly-and-drive whenever I spot a primo shitbox on Craigslist.

This is a relatively unusual Cessna 172 variant, the Cutlass RG which was introduced in 1979 as a retractable landing gear version of the venerable Cessna 172 Skyhawk. Outside of the engine and the retractable landing gear, the Cutlass RG is a Cessna Skyhawk and the landing gear system is the same as used on the Cessna Skylane 182RG. The engine and constant speed prop were the same as what was used on the fixed gear Cessna 177 Cardinal. Though the Cutlass was in the same class as aircraft as the Piper Arrow, it was relatively underpowered compared to contemporary retractable gear piston singles but that wasn’t the niche Cessna was after- the Cutlass RG was seen as a more complex trainer that was a step up for flight schools from the ubiquitous Cessna Skyhawk, offering commonality and economy while meeting the training requirements for a complex aircraft. From that perspective, the Cutlass RG did well with the bulk of its sales going to flight schools even though only 1,177 were built as the type had the misfortune of being introduced just as the general aviation slump was starting. The Cessna Cutlass RG is considered to be one of the most economical retractable gear aircraft to own and operate, something that points to its Cessna Skyhawk roots. Of the over 44,000 Cessna 172s built in all variants, only 1,177 were Cutlass RGs. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #KADS #ADS #Addison #airport #planespotting #instaplane #instagramaviation #Avgeekery #Cessna #Cutlass #Cessna172RG #Cessna172 #N9573B #splendid_transport #instaaviation #aviationlovers #aviationphotography #flight #AvgeekSchoolofKnowledge (at Addison Airport)
