also THE BIG AND GREAT REASON WHY ANALOGMAN IS A GOOD VILLAIN

like he’s not even like most of my villain science grandpa faves where i like them cos theyre sympathetic or whatever. he instead falls in the hojo ctaegory of “so fuckin love to hate that it makes the entire game great”. The only reason i dont still have that save file right before the hojo boss fight so i can kick his ass any time as stress relief is cos i moved house and lost that memory card. and the european version of digimon world is bugged out so you cant actually see the final battle so i never got to fight analogman myself but DAMN WATCHING LPS IS JUST AS SATISFYING!!!!

he’s such a good villain for THE DIGIMON SERIES SPECIFICALLY

he’s a similar sort of deconstruction of the premise of the series, same reason why ken and oikawa became my faves. just his deconstruction isnt played for sad value like them, he’s a “dark reflection of the digidestined” in a genuinely bad way that makes his tiny five sentence section of the plot REALLY DAMN INTERESTING

cos this game came out before the anime he’s not so much a deconstruction of shonen hero archetypes or mon genre shows so much as a deconstruction of ACTUAL PLAYERS OF THE DIGIMON TAMAGOTCHI IN REAL LIFE

he’s a griefer as a villain long before comeptitive esports and mmorpgs really took off and gave us words for these things!

he’s an asshole who plays the game in stupid minmaxing ways and exploits cheats and hacks and doesn’t care about having fun, being honorable, having any affection for his digimon or yknow the whole fact that he’s playing against literal kids who dont have access to the same resources he does. “I’m just a better player than you are!” says grown man picking on a five year old with his overpowered premium digimon. “It’s just logically the only true way hardcore players should do it! Its the way the developers intended the game to be played!” he continues, throwing money to buy objectively better stats and exploiting glitches in one specific SSBM controller from the early 2000s. “ITS 100% MY OWN SKILL”

look im sorry but that is totally the BEST and MOST RELEVANT villain for this entire goddamn genre of games as a whole. pokemon kinda has a worse problem with these kinds of people just cos it has a bigger competitive fanbase, but hoooo boy Cyber Sleuth had its fair share of this! the ‘every damn person has the same fuckin team’ syndrome... fuckin unfair speed glitch bullshit...

and honestly its all even funnier and more realistic to have this douchey gamer bro personality attached to a generic 30-50 year old businessman. cos that really is the kind of person who’s the worst at this stuff! they predicted the future so damn well! like its funny HOW ITS FUNNY! how is an old guy in a suit such an unexpected design for a videogame hacker when 90% of these people in real life are mean adults picking on children to act out their frustration from their shitty day job. it always bugs me when tv uses “cliche nerds” to represent Bad Nerds and generically pretty supermodels who dont have any socially awkward traits to represent the good ones. generally your “cringe compilation” long haired overweight teenager with a replica keyblade is the nicest fuckin guy you’ll ever meet, and its some “karen’s racist ex husband” lookin dude who’s causing the actual shit.

...yknow what would have still been a better sequel than Next Order? the story of rematching Analogman told entirely through his ex wife’s facebook conversations about how shitty he is. “yeah billy turned up on my doorstep drunk again. says some kid beat him in a videogame and now he’s half digital or something. i think he’s just tryin to get in my pants”

lesson of the day: sometimes a character can be bad in personality but not a Bad Character, because their badness is a finely crafted arrow of precision aimed directly at your frontal cortex to activate primordial rage. sometimes a man is so fun to punch that it raises the entire game’s script by three levels
