Carousel

Continuing with our post lockdown meals, this one is at Carousel. SInce we visited, Carousel have actually decided to move from the location we ate at to a new place on Charlotte Street. However, before we think about their new place, let’s talk about the meal we had at their original location!

This was close enough to lockdown that we were still keen to be sat outside. Luckily for us, they had a small outdoor area and the weather held out too. The thing with Carousel is that rather than have a permanent menu, they get a series of guest chefs to come up with a menu and do it for a few weeks. When we went, they were in the middle of an Asian inspired menu. Can’t get started with the food without a quick drink first!

Thai-style peanuts to kick off the meal. These were sticky, a little sweet, a little salty and a lot more-ish. These disappeared pretty quick!

Next up was the Korean Fried Chicken. This was a little saucier than I usually like my KFC but otherwise, really tasty. The chicken was still nice and crispy and very enjoyable.

You can’t really see too much of this under the layer of crispy rice but what it was was a soy cured egg yolk with mackeral sashimi (you can see that on the side) with very thin slices of okra. Super fresh and perfect for a nice summer’s evening, which it was.

So on the menu, this was a pork katsu curry with cabbage salad. While it was perfectly fried, I was a little surprised when I bit into it that rather than being a big chunk of pork, it was in fact essentially a pork burger. It was still delicious but just not what I would called a pork katsu.

The green onion and sancho pepper rice did go very well with the pork. Not sure I tasted much of the sancho pepper though (I will admit though that I don’t really know what sancho pepper should taste like).

This was Carousel’s version of mapo tofu. Similar to the pork katsu, it’s not quite what I would normally identify as mapo tofu. For one, I’ve never had mapo tofu where you just get one big chunk of tofu. It was also lacking pork which for me is a pretty integral part of mapo tofu. Again, like the pork katsu, it tasted good so not complaining.

Dessert was banana tarte tatin with Thai basil ice cream. I feel like this strayed away from the Asian theme a little but i guess it was Thai basil. The tarte tatin was delicious though. The bananas were beautifully caramalized and the pastry, while not the usual tarte tatin base, was light and crisp. Think this may have been my favourite dish of the whole meal!

As I mentioned at the beginning, Carousel are in the process of moving to new digs on Charlotte Street and if this meal was anything to go by, it’s definitely worth a visit!

@bradshawandsons: Last night we launched the Giffords Circus cookbook written by Nell Gifford and Ols Halas and published by @quadrillebooks on 26th March. Ols has worked tirelessly on the book for years with Nell who supported his dream and helped make it happen by weaving her circus stories together with Ols’s recipes.
