PHOENIX - A teenage boy shot a man trying to break into his home near 75th Avenue and Camelback Road Friday night, police said.
Officers were called to the neighborhood at around 10 p.m. on Sept. 8, according to police.
Here are the details on what happened:
Who's the suspect?
Court documents identified the suspect as Juan Saavedra.
Saavedra, according to court documents, turned 36 on Sept. 11, three days following his arrest. Court documents listed a number of prior arrests and convictions for Saavedra, but those entries were redacted from the court documents we received.
In court documents, Saavedra is listed as a transient.
What led to Saavedra's arrest?
Court documents state that Phoenix Police officers responded to a residential neighborhood near 75th Avenue and Camelback Road for a burglary in progress call at around 10:05 p.m.
When officers arrived at around 10:13 p.m., they contacted a man in front of a home, later identified as Saavedra.
"As officers approached this male, they observed him to be suffering from apparent gun shot wounds to his abdomen and right arm," read a portion of the court documents.
Eventually, officers made contact with an alleged victim, who told officers she had received a motion notification on her security system, and then saw Saavedra on her security camera walking around the front of her home.
"The victim stated she exited her residence and gave the defendant several commands to leave the area or he was at risk of being shot, in an attempt to scare him away from the residences front yard area," read a portion of the court documents. "The victim stated she then ran back inside of her residence, instructing one of her children to close and lock the door behind her. The victim stated as she entered her residence, she began calling police and went to retrieve a firearm in order to protect herself, her husband and five children located inside."
The alleged victim, according to police, later heard Saavedra bang on a carport door. After she told her children to move away from the area and hide as far away as possible, she heard the glass windowpane of the carport door shatter, and Saavedra's hand reaching inside.
"The victim stated as she stood with the firearm, she observed the defendants hand came through the now open and broken window, and reached for the doors doorknob in an attempt to open the door,' read a portion of the statement. "The victim stated at this point her 13-year-old son, seeing that the defendant was attempting to make entry and his mother was not firing the firearm, in fear for the safety of himself and family, took the firearm from his mother and fired the firearm towards the defendant, striking him."
Saavedra, according to investigators, was later taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries, and was eventually released into police custody.
What led to the incident taking place?
In an interview that was done after Saavedra was read his Miranda rights, court documents state that detectives asked Saavedra on why he tried to get into the home. Saavedra replied that he had been smoking methamphetamine with a friend for about 48 hours prior to the incident, and that he was trying to locate his friend in various residential yards.
"The defendant stated upon approaching the victim's residence he heard her inform him to leave the area. The defendant stated he then approached the carport door of the residence, and believed it to be his son, despite knowing the residence did not belong to him," read a portion of the court documents.
When asked by police if he knew his actions could scare the people inside the home, court documents say Saavedra replied, "Yeah, I mean I was high obviously."
So, what happens to the suspect now?
According to court documents, Saavedra is accused of 2nd Degree Burglary, which is a felony.
Meanwhile, a judge has set a $50,000 cash-only bond for Saavedra, according to documents.
Neighbors said they heard several gunshots. Some ducked down on the floor.
They say it’s troubling to hear police say this suspect was seemingly attempting to break into their neighbor's home randomly.
"I’m happy that they had something to defend themselves," a neighbor said. "I would have, we would have done the same thing, so I feel good for them."

A lot of fantasy draws from European cultures with similar kinds of names, fantasy creatures and feudal structures, but you can still have human diversity in your world-building and it feel natural. After all, black and Asian people are a part of European real-life history and culture and always have been. The world has always been a big place and migration, trade and human will have always been the game.
Tumblr media
A trap writers can fall into is to make the cultures they base their fantasy on even "whiter" than they were in real-life mostly due to historical misconceptions. Europe has had constant interactions with North African and Asian populations going back thousands of years, from Arab kingdoms and Sultanates to the Ottomans and the Silk Road. The Romans were aware enough of China enough to call it Serica, and China were also aware of them. Meanwhile, the Roma and Sinti groups, who are originally from India, have been in Europe for over 700 years. There were hundreds of black people living in Tudor London to the point Queen Elizabeth I complained. There were black people like John Blanke, a musician present at Henry VIII coronation, as well as Dederi Jacquoh, who came from what would later become part of Liberia and was baptised in England in 1610. From the Sons of Africa abolition group to black and Asian soldiers serving in WW1 and WW2, POC have always left their mark.
No matter what people are people, and world-wide they have their own individual agency and are often prone to migration as simple as hopping on a boat or raft, or riding horse or camelback or just walking for days, weeks and months in great pilgrimages. Diversity isn't new or modern, it's a natural part of human history, and to remove it can make a fantasy worlds feel less natural, more produced, compartmentalised and artificial. Writers should always give their world some nuance and unexpectedness, wonder and humanity.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) -- A Valley man is now facing charges after authorities say he broke into a west Phoenix home by climbing into a chimney but then got stuck.
Officers and firefighters responded to a home just after 1 a.m. near 39th Avenue and Camelback Road to perform a technical rescue after the family of the house told 911 that a man who knew them, later identified as 47-year-old Ervin Ortiz Guzman, got stuck. Phoenix Fire Capt. Kim Ragsdale tells Arizona’s Family that paramedics worked to ensure Guzman was safe as firefighters worked to get him out.
“Crews were able to monitor him, monitor the atmosphere around him at all times, they were able to have contact with him at all times, speak to the gentlemen and provide water for him,” said Ragsdale.
After the rescue, crews took him to a nearby hospital in stable condition. Phoenix police tell Arizona’s Family that the suspect will face one count of criminal trespassing and an Order of Protection violation once released. _____________________

The gay Denny’s burned down, allegedly due to a grease fire, which really sucks. It’s one of the top LGTBQI+ friendly spots in the Phoenix area, so I hope they reopen soon.
I still remember the first time I ate there with my two oldest kids when they were wee. My kids’ daycare was a few blocks away. I was looking around thinking, ‘Is it just me or are there a ton of gay people in here?’ and then chastised myself for making assumptions about people I don’t know. Later that evening, I mentioned it to a friend, who explained that it wasn’t just me, that the location is known locally as the gay Denny’s because it gets a lot of late-night business from the gay bars down the street.
There’s a Denny’s in Lakewood, Ohio, we used to go to after club concerts. That location is known as the punk rock Denny’s and if you ask anyone from Lakewood or the Northern Ohio punk/alternative scene about it, they’ll know exactly which Denny’s you mean. So I wasn’t even surprised that there’s a gay Denny’s and that everyone in Phoenix knows where it is if you mention it.
Nothing hits quite like Denny’s when you’re looking for after-party food. I always make it a point to tip the servers extremely well, especially the late-night servers. They put up with a lot of shit from drunken fools and cheapskates.

Top Attractions for Travelers Visiting Jordan
Tumblr media
Jordan is a land sacred to many faiths. Located east of Jerusalem, it provides religiously significant places for Christians, Muslims, and Jews. According to the Bible, Moses glimpsed the Promised Land from one of Jordan's mountains before his death. Today, pilgrims visit this same peak to honor Moses and follow in his footsteps.
Amman, Jordan's vibrant capital, showcases a fusion of antiquity and modernity. The cityscape features striking skyscrapers that contrast beautifully with traditional gold-domed mosques. Must-see attractions include the massive Roman amphitheater where grand events were once held, surviving pillars from the Temple of Hercules, and ruins from the 4th century Umayyad palace. Venturing to the so-called Rainbow Street in downtown Amman immerses visitors in the bustling cafes, restaurants, and vibrant nightlife.
Over an hour from Amman lies Jerash, home to some of the most impressive Roman ruins in the Eastern world. Once called Gerasa, this city features paved roads and treasures such as the decorative columns of the Roman Forum and Temple of Zeus, best viewed from the summit. Ongoing excavations have uncovered much of this white-stone city, giving a rare glimpse into the Roman times. Other sites include the Grand Hadrian's Arch entranceway, the Hippodrome arena for chariot races, and the Jerash Museum.
The ancient city of Petra, once the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom over 2,000 years ago, is Jordan's top attraction. Also called the Red City due to its sandstone surroundings, Petra earned UNESCO World Heritage Site status for its immense historical and archaeological value. This entire city was carved out of rose-colored cliffs, revealing stunning architecture.
Visitors pass through a narrow kilometer-long gorge with towering rust-colored walls called the Siq, which leads to the iconic treasure-inspired facade of ad-Deir, also known as The Monastery. Beyond The Monastery lies a sprawling expanse of temples, tombs, theaters, and other structures sculpted from rose-red rock.
In southern Jordan, Wadi Rum is a stunning desert valley that captivates visitors with its vast sandstone and granite cliffs, striking landscapes, and towering rock formations spanning the horizon. This unique setting offers adventurous travelers and hikers one of the top rock-climbing spots in the region. Visitors can also explore the desert expanse on camelback tours and sleep under the starry skies while camping overnight. A full day spent amidst the scenery lets guests witness the changing hues of the rust-toned rocks as the sun travels across the sky.
Nestled high in northern Jordan's hills overlooking the Sea of Galilee is the lush town of Umm Qais, also called Gadara. Its green landscape stands distinct from the surrounding desert environs. Within it lies well-preserved ruins spanning many eras, including Roman-era streets and two impressive theaters.
The town's main attractions are the hilltop vistas showcasing sweeping views of the Jordan Valley, Galilee Lake, Syria, and Israel. Biblically, Umm Qais is known as the location where Jesus once cast out demons from two men into a herd of pigs, as recounted in the passage of the "Miracle of the Gadarene Swine."
No trip to Jordan is complete without visiting the Dead Sea. As the lowest point on land globally, over 1200 feet below sea level, this geographical marvel derives its name from the lack of marine life. Its high-saline waters permit bathing visitors to float effortlessly while enjoying the scenery. Visitors can also indulge in rejuvenating experiences such as soaking in mineral-dense waters or applying its therapeutic mud, renowned for detoxifying and exfoliating properties. Leisurely boat rides across the sea's calming surface while absorbing expansive views offer visitors an even more indulgent encounter.
