This lavishly decorated piece is a Byzantine bracelet dating from the 6th century. The Byzantines created complex and precious pieces, such as this bracelet, which is encrusted with expensive gemstones and pearls, demonstrating the wealth of the Byzantine empire.
The openwork technique, also called Opus interrasile (meaning ‘to scrape in between), is done by punching or piercing holes in the metal with a chisel or other sharp tool, resembling delicate, lace-like patterns.

Gold Signet Ring with Virgin and Child
Byzantine, 6th–7th century
As Christianity became the dominant religion in Byzantine society, Christian imagery was increasingly found on jewelry. Crosses appear by the fifth century; the Virgin Mary, saints, angels, and other holy figures became popular in the sixth century. The images were thought to protect the wearer, aid in prayers, and even perform miracles.

BYZANTINE GOLD PAIR OF EARRINGS
Ca. 600-700 AD
A matched pair of openwork gold earrings in a crescent shape, each with a hook and eye closure and intricately decorated with granulation and tendrils. Byzantium was justly famous for the elegance of its jewelry, whether in precious metals for the aristocracy or in bronze for people further down the social ladder. The item has undergone X-ray fluorescence analysis to confirm the metallurgical content suggesting its ancient origin and lack of modern trace elements.
Size: L:30.5mm / W:25.6mm ; 8.25g.
