jumping off of my last post since i’m apparently back in tdona hell and i guess i’m just a damn critic, thoughts on what i believe to be the most widely-praised production of the first opera:
the casting, voice-wise, is simply superb, save for the narrator, as i believe the annabel is actually? the same annabel of the recording? which i love??
the narrator sounds too rich and her vibrato is rather wobbly; cleaning up the vibrato though, i think she could make a lovely jackie
jasper has an odd vocal quality when he’s not fucking belting that, while not necessarily bad, makes me somewhat uncomfortable? but i’m pretty sure like 60% of my criticisms come from the fact that he’s a fucking papier-mâché children’s art project
pretty good edgar. bit more limited in range than i’d like, but that’s just a preference. it’s an issue though in act 3
god i could not take a goddamn thing abt bonfire of the dolls seriously because of the jasper doll
they really did not do the voodoopunks justice. just saying.
i reeeeeeaallyyyy don’t like when productions use the same actor for edgar and byron. justifications could be that since they’re father and son, it makes sense, but i think they really need to have extremely distinguishable voices because of that. it’s even worse because he covered edgar, byron, and soldier 7285
having said that, the actor was still stellar and he did a well enough job of distinguishing the characters in his portrayal
i’ve always loved the ten straight seconds of gunfire honestly? i’ve seen people complain about it but i like it. i feel like if you’re going for something more somber than distressing, you need to have a longer pause than they put and the gunshots (PLURAL DAMMIT did they just leave jasper alone to live; they only shot priscilla) have to be right after another immediately
WHY WOULD THEY CUT OUT “soldier 7285, why didn’t you fire?” THAT’S SUCH A GOOD LINE
i hate the jasper doll so fucking much i hate it i hate it i hate it you have an actor right there goddamnit

i’ll review clockwork hart’s tdona production later but i’m SCREAMING i skipped ahead to watch the voodoopunks because casting for byron and representation of the voodoopunks are two of my biggest things abt tdona productions, but i think they gave byron leather pants

tdona memes that are 100000x funnier than edgar's lime pie
- “[insert joke about death/depression]” - jasper probably
- “one day you will learn / and you will burn like my heart burned” applied to minor inconveniences
- silof
- “hello, police?”
- “priscilla, what’d you do?”
- the aphrodisiacs why does no one talk about the aphrodisiacs
- vote for jasper
- byron: “i love my grandpa”
- jasper: “please Don’t”
- the fact that jasper “plays a country station if you give him a pat” is a real line
- fuck you lloyd allen
- p a p a v e r c i g a r e t t e s
- the hilarious repetitiveness of “i will bring you down”
- “soldier 7285 why didn’t you fire” / [insert completely irrelevant answer]
- all the voice cracks in “edgar builds a business” in the stage production come on we all heard them
- the entirety of “edgar builds a business”
- i hate this one too but edgar = the onceler
- the narrator is an asshole
