Tangled Salt Marathon - Under Raps
My feelings on this episode are pretty neutral. Itâs not anything amazing, but itâs not the worst thing ever either. Itâs just there, I guess.Â
Summary:Â During a love festival, Corona displays a book full of signatures of lovers in honor of an old ruler's falling in love with the leader of a rival kingdom. Cassandra suddenly turns very secretive; Rapunzel learns it's because she's been seeing a guy named Andrew. Cassandra doesn't want Rapunzel's meddling, but the princess suggests a double date and they all go off in a hot air balloon. However, Andrew turns out to be part of an old faction that didn't like the unification of Corona and wants to steal the book.
This Backstory Doesnât Add Up
So we open up with Big Nose narrating about the history of a war between Corona and a group of people called the Saporians. This is important for two reasons. First, because the Saporians are reoccurring villains in the show, and secondly, because it reveals where the underground tunnels running between Old Corona and the Island Capital come from. These tunnels are a reoccurring plot device in the show, along with the book that maps them.Â
The problem is that what the story tells us doesnât match the other information we are given. If it was only the Saporians who invaded then why does an Old Corona, with its own castle, exist to begin with? Why do the tunnels extend from both if King Herz Der Sonne made them? What purpose did they serve if he was only defending the island? Why are the Saporians led by a general and not a ruler? Why would marrying only a general unite the two kings and where was the Saporian kingdom to begin with? Why did they invade? Why are there still Saporians who havenât accepted the merger centuries later and why do they live on the go outside the kingdom? If Herz Der Sonne is such a good guy then why did he curse his grave with a zombie apocalypse? Ect.Â
We keep getting hints throughout the show that Herz Der Sonne isnât all he was cracked up to be, and you keep expecting a reveal that it was the Coronaians who started the war and oppressed the Saporians and then rewrote history, but it never comes. The show wants us to accept this very black and white conflict at face value even as it constantly undermines itself and muddies the waters.Â
Pointing Out That Something is Stupid in the Show Itself Doesnât Make it Any Less Stupid
As I stated back during Rapunzelâs Enemy, the show has a real problem with tone. Constantly showing us festival and holiday after festival and holiday only undermines the more serious elements in the ongoing story and creates mood whiplash. Also anything that reminds me of Cinderella 2Â is not a good thing.Â
Ahh Friedborg, Youâre Such a Wasted OpportunityÂ
So she actually first appeared in Cassandra V. Eugene but I forgot to bring her up there. My bad. Friedborg is something of a fan favorite in the TTS fandom, and I like her too, but she adds nothing. Sheâs a joke character in a tv show already oversaturated by joke characters. More over the joke is actually offensive on some level since it all hinges on her being less conventionally attractive then the other female characters and the mains finding her weird because she never talks.Â
The show tries to justify her existence by making her Big Noseâs girlfriend, but sheâs not who he ended up with in the movie. And once again itâs kind of offensive to imply that only people who donât match societyâs contrived beauty standards can only find love with those that look like them. Thereby completely missing the point of Big Noseâs character arc.Â
Iâll say it right now, Friedborg should have been Zan Tiri, or Demantius. Take your pick. I think ZT makes more sense, but etheir way she should have been a setup for something more important to the plot rather then just be being a vauge oddity that just pops up from time to time.Â
I Miss This Version of Eugene
Throughout the first two seasons, Eugene and Cassandra were willing to point out Rapunzelâs BS. Forcing her to confront her flaws and re-examine her positions.I would argue that the show could have pushed this even further but at least it was there. By the final season no one was doing this. Rapunzel is allowed to be as awful as she wants to be without consequence. Meaning she never learns anything and stops growing as a character and the show acts like this a positive thing. It is not. In fact, it is the biggest flaw of the whole show as it fails to achieve the one thing it originally set out to do; which is to tell a coming of age story with Rapunzel.Â
It also has the added effect of making Eugene a doormat to Rapunzelâs bulling, thereby regressing his character as well and presenting an unhealthy relationship as a goal to be achieved to younger viewers. I can not stress enough to young girls and young men in particular, that Rapunzel and Eugene are not relationship goalsâ in this show. Not after season 3.Â
Xavier Doesnât Get a Proper IntroductionÂ
So Xavier is actually pretty important to the ongoing plot. Heâs more or less the exposition fairy for the show, but heâs not really established. He just suddenly appears here with no prior meeting and he just so happens to know what the main characters need to know with no explanation as to how he knows.Â
His part here is so forgettable that I legit forgot who he was when he reappeared in the mid-season finale. I had thought that the writers just threw in a random character for plot purposes. And to be fair they did. Just they did it here instead of in Queen for a Day.Â
If the showrunners wanted Xavier to be historian who knows everything and tells stories, then he should have been introduced as the narrator of the history of Hearts Day instead of Big Nose.Â
Another Lesson Not LearnedÂ
We get this big heart to heart moment of Raps and Cass coming to an understanding, with Rapunzel promising not to intrude and Cass promising to being more honest about her feelings. This is walked back on several times and made part of the core conflict of the last two seasons.Â
Once again, any problem that can be solved in less then five minutes of talking isnât a strong enough conflict to drive multiple seasons. If this had been a show without an ongoing narrative, like say The Rescue Rangers or even Batman the Animated Series, then the repeated lessons wouldnât be a problem. We expect characters to be static and to reset after each episode since theyâre not shows that you watch in order.Â
But if you do go the overarching arc route for a story, then people expect lasting character development. Even in shows like Gravity Falls or Steven Universe, where the change is more gradual and the characters do repeat mistakes occasionally, thereâs still a marketed change by the end. One that indicates improvement by the characters, and the inter conflicts are never exactly the same each time with exactly the same lesson over and over again.Â
Oh Look, Cassandra Once Again Achieving her Goal of ValidationÂ
Cass is awarded a medal by her father for stopping Andrew. Donât expect her or the show to remember this.Â
Also more Cass and Cap interaction that we donât get to see.Â
Can We Not Imply That Cassandra Still has a Crush on the Guy Who Lied to Her and Then Almost Killed Her, and Can We Not Act Like This is a Good Thing?
So this flower was given to Cassandra by Andrew and her keeping it makes zero sense.Â
First off lets not have one of our few strong independent female characters crushing on the showâs stereotypical ânice guyâ, okay? Thatâs all kinds of gross. Secondly, if the intention was to show that Cass was now more willing to open up about her feelings, then wouldnât her keeping one of the gifts Raps made her earlier in the episode make more sense? After all, thatâs the relationship that actually matters to Cassandra and is the basis of the whole show.Â
But this all boils down to the fact that the creator sees Cassandra as straight, always has, and thinks her crushing on the guy who manipulated her is somehow better than âno-homoâ. Now you can headcanon Cass as whatever you want and ship her with whomever you want, as canon doesnât matter. But I find it hilarious that most of the head showrunnerâs biggest supporters are mainly Casspunzel fans and yet heâs the one who made them âsistersâ and sees them as such.
Like I hate to break it to you guys, but a Cass led spin-off headed by Chris won't be the lesbian rep that youâve always dreamed of. Youâre better off just watching the She-Ra reboot.Â
But things gets even worse when Rapunzel approves of this stupid âcrushâ ...
Donât Ever Tell Someone That Youâre Proud of Them For Going On a Date
Dating is just something some people choose to do together and some people choose not to engage in that. Itâs not an accomplishment and it shouldnât be treated as such. This is insulting to both people who donât date, for whatever reason, and to women who hate being being defined by their relationships, which is most of us.Â
Even if youâre being charitable and try to make this about Cassandra self esteem and her learning sheâs worth âlovingâ, which is the reason some people have offered up for this scene, it still falls apart when itâs not established that Cassandra ever had such self esteem issues to begin with and was not looking for romance anyways. And if that is what the show is going for then itâs still problematic to suggest that being found as attractive by someone else is need for self esteem. In fact, thatâs kind of the opposite of what self esteem is.  Â
ConclusionÂ
Overall this episode was âmehâ. Like most season one episodes the problems stem from the ongoing narrative and lack of follow though in later seasons. However thereâs enough stuff in here on itâs own to rub me just the wrong way that I canât actually call it good either.Â
It doesnât help that I donât see the appeal of Andrew at all. Watching the character is just a cringefest for me. Heâs too similar to real life men Iâve unfortunately met and therefore sends alarm bells ringing in my head. And I agree with Eugene; heâs not all that handsome.Â

Why Nonbinary Borderlands Fans are Mad About Zer0â˛s Pronouns, In a Timeline
2012
Zer0 was introduced in Borderlands 2 as a character meant to be absurdly mysterious in almost every way. Â Zer0 is apparently not their real name, they seem not to be human (but itâs unclear if theyâre an alien, robot, or something else entirely), no one knows where they came from, etc. Still, in Borderlands 2, they defaulted to he/him, and was assumed male.Â
Itâs worth noting that Borderlands 2 also featured Bloodwing, Mordecaiâs pet alien bird. In the original Borderlands Bloodwing was referred to as he/him, but switched between games to she/her. This is explained outside the game by Burch, who says that Bloodwingâs species changes gender halfway through life.
2013
Gearbox released the Diamond Plate Loot Chest. In it was the âPandoran Gazetteâ an in-universe newspaper. It included an âAsk Doctor Tannisâ advice column, the last question being:
Dear Doctor Tannis,
I have heard you are acquainted with the vault hunter known as "Zer0". I have been meaning to ask - that's not really his true name, is it? Hell, maybe Zer0 isn't even a "he". Do you have any details on this mysterious figure?
- Curious in Old Haven
Dear Curious,
I am indeed acquainted with the towering stack of leather and poorly-written poetry that so many refer to as "Zer0". As you have correctly noted, "Zer0" is not the Vault Hunter's true name. Zer0's actual name and gender are (CONTINUED ON PAGE 9)
Page 9 was not included. To my knowledge, this was where it was first seeded that Zer0 may not be male.Â
November 2, 2014
In a panel titled âPlaying as a female character panel - Does it Matterâ during PAX Australia, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford discussed Zer0âs gender:
âThe other things thatâs interesting to me is sometimes when thereâs characters that donât have a gender or have an ambiguous gender Iâll choose them...In Borderlands 2 we left Zer0âs identity very ambiguous. What gender is he?â *crowd laughs* âWe need better pronouns, donât we? Donât we need better pronouns?â (Timestamp)Â
âWhatâs the gender of Zer0?âŚ.That says more about me than it does say about Zer0, the fact that I use the pronoun he when I describe Zer0. In fact, um, we purposely have left Zer0âs gender ambiguous. Thereâs a lot of folks at Gearbox that like to think that maybe Zer0âs of a particular species that doesnât have gender- That is more androgynous.â  (Timestamp)Â

November 25th, 2014
The first episode of Tales From the Borderlands was released. Anthony Burch answered this question on his Ask.fm:Â
To my memory, tumblr blew up with excited nonbinary fans. Prior to seeing screenshots of this, I really didnât have interest in Borderlands. The idea of a cool nonbinary character who used they/them pronouns, admist a virtual desert of representation, made me play through the entire series as fast as I could so I could catch up in time to see these pronouns in action. For a long time afterwards Iâve seen other nonbinary people expressing the same sudden interest in the series after learning this about Zer0. Because, yeah, it was a pretty big deal.Â
2015:Â
Zer0 appeared again in episode 5 of Tales, released almost a year later after the first. Their voice had changed to one that sounds more ambiguous in terms of gender, but Zer0 was still being referred to as âhe/himâ.
Anthony Burch was one of the writers on this episode. Afterward, he answered this on his ask.fm:
Since he claimed it was honestly a mistake, nonbinary fans held out hope. There were posts going around tumblr clarifying that yes, Zer0 was still nonbinary, and still was meant to use they/them pronouns. It was just a mistake made by a thoughtless cisgender man.
Of course, then some presumably-cisgender fan goes to Burch, and validates him, because clearly a character canât just up and CHANGE pronouns! Itâs not like anyone ever does that in real life!Â
Itâs not a fair point. Itâs a dumb point from someone who has no stakes in this.Â
(Another thing worth noting is it has only been other characters who referred to Zer0 as he/him. Zer0 has never made a point of standing up for their own pronouns.)
After this Burch just kind of gives up on the whole idea.Â
This statement about characters being âprogressive enough not to misgender someoneâ is weird, because the characters, even the sympathetic ones, in Borderlands have often blatantly failed to be progressive. The original Borderlands has the worst of it, itâs your basic 2009 edgelord shit. Thereâs blatant misogyny, not to mention the extremely homophobic joke surrounding Mr. Shank (and within that the transphobic joke about his girlfriend being a man in a wig).
Burch only started writing for the game in Borderlands 2, however. Itâs a huge step up, but thereâs still a lot of bigotry. Captain Scarlett makes a âno fattiesâ joke. Mr Torgue fat-shames Ellie. Mr Torgue uses the R-slur. Multiple characters slut-shame Moxxi. Incest jokes surrounding Scooter, who also is implied to be a huge creep towards women.Â
Heck, thereâs the entirety of Sir Hammerlockâs Big Game Hunt DLC is a racist, colonialist mess. Its antagonist is implied to be gay, one of two gay male characters introduced thus far, and heâs a pathetic, creepy stalker.Â
This is the game series where there are two common enemy types whose names are straight up ableist.Â
So citing characters as being âtoo progressiveâ rings hollow with this context.Â
Besides, trans people are often misgendered, even by people whoâd otherwise be considered progressive.Â
Burch left Gearbox the same year, so heâs not entirely to blame for what anything afterwards. He just set a pretty bad precedent.
2019:
Gearbox did seem to take the âmake a new nonbinary characterâ thing to heart.Â
They give us Fl4k, again a nonhuman character, who uses they/them pronouns. And okay, I love Fl4k, but like most nonbinary people Iâm tired of all nonbinary characters being robots, aliens, or otherwise non-human in appearance (a trope that yes, Zer0 falls into as well). Still, Fl4k is cute and having a nonbinary playable character who uses they/them pronouns is cool! I definitely plan to play as them.
Many nonbinary fans were suspicious though, it seemed likely that Fl4k might be meant to appease us and they could keep on using he/him for Zer0.
We were proven right when they released the gameplay preview on May 1st. We hear Zer0 called âheâ. None of us are surprised, but it still hurts, we felt like weâd been baited with Zer0.Â
Besides, why can only one character at a time be nonbinary? Why can a bird change pronouns but not a person? Why was a writer allowed to go out and promise this if it wasnât going to be followed through on (yes, he didnât use the word âpromiseâ but telling a marginalized group something like that isnât something you can just âforgetâ without people feeling betrayed)?
And thatâs where weâre at, as of me writing this.
I feel like there are some comments Iâm bound to get on this, so Iâll answer them here:
Why are you making such a big deal about this?
Me typing a few paragraphs isnât making a big deal. But I feel misled and baited. After a few years of no clarification after Burch promising us they/them Zer0, a lot of people hung on to hope. A lot of people became big fans of Zer0 because theyâre a fun, badass, nonbinary character. Their design is really, really rad! And heck, they were (at least for a time) the most popular playable character in Borderlands 2. Telling everyone, in-game, âactually Zer0 was never really a he, theyâve been a âtheyâ this whole timeâ would have been HUGE. Like how Blizzard made Overwatchâs poster girl, Tracer, canonically a lesbian, and then revealed their badass gruff guy (who fills the roll of your basic FPS protagonist), Soldier 76, to be a gay man.
They/them are still not widely accepted pronouns.
For us who use them, itâs difficult to convince people not to default to something gendered. Especially when we fail to appear completely androgynous. Iâve been told Zer0 canât possibly be nonbinary because they have a deep voice and âmasculineâ body shape. But real nonbinary people come in all shapes and sizes with all kinds of voices!Â
What about Fl4k?
As I said, Iâm very happy about Fl4k. They fall into some problematic tropes even more than Zer0 (as Fl4k is verified beyond a doubt to be a robot, and has an âacceptableâ androgynous shape to them). I donât know their voice yet, I wouldnât be surprised if it also fell into the category of âacceptably androgynousâ.
Fl4k is new and already âthey/themâ. Zer0 is an established character who already has a lot of fans among a bunch of different groups of people. Thereâs definite value in demonstrating a character can switch pronouns, since pretty much every nonbinary person who uses they/them havenât used those pronouns their entire life.
Besides, there can and should be more than one nonbinary character.Â
Fl4k being nonbinary but not Zer0 kind of feels like Gearbox expects us to shut up and be happy with what weâre given.
What about nonbinary people who use he/him pronouns? Canât Zer0 be that?
Those people are real and valid.Â
However, weâre talking about real people versus a fictional character. I admit Iâd feel better if it was stated, in-game, âYeah, Zer0 is nonbinary and uses he/himâ. But even then, itâs REALLY EASY for cisgender people to ignore that information and write Zer0 off as male (And knowing gearbox, theyâd put it somewhere easily missed. Iâve surprised so many straight people whoâd played through Borderlands 2 with the fact that Sir Hammerlock is gay, simply because it was only verified in a side quest). And you know, we were promised they/them, so like, not doing that kind of sucks.
Also I think itâs really important to normalize they/them.
So what are we supposed to do about this? What do you expect to change, anyways?
Honestly? I donât expect Gearbox to fix this so late. In all likelihood, thatâs way too much dialogue to re-record. But I still think itâs worth making our voices heard. We shouldnât silently put up with this kind of thing. Other people will pull the same shit, being either unsympathetic or unaware of the harm they do. And heck, itâs unlikely, but maybe Gearbox will at least acknowledge their wrongdoing.
Also, itâs maybe worthwhile to ignore canon, and keep referring to Zer0 as âthey/themâ, or if this whole thing is news to you, itâs not too late to start. It would mean a lot to nonbinary fans, and make a point about how Zer0 is regarded.

Riverdale Reaction - 3x17 -Â âThe Masterâ
They couldâve renamed this episode âThe Snacksâ and itâd be pretty damn accurate
The Serpents are slithering in the name of justice and laser pointers! Iâm already 10/10 all in
No necklace on V! Is that growth? Can Betty get her a BFF chain thing? Like a heart with two halves and they each wear them? Ohhhh look at my scheming girls.
HA! The Serpents pool table replaced the dining room table. I mean, priorities. Really.
There is an obscene amount of orange juice in the Jones house. Commentary on the acidic relationships? Sunny dispositions? Maybe not. The photos on the fridge have changed and transferred! Woo! OH NO SHE DID NOT grab Jug by his hair and hat. Momma is going down. Iâm siccing the girls on her.
Omg Bettyâs âritualistic drowningâ line and Veronicaâs big smile like âThatâs my girlâ made my heart swell. Love them when theyâre fighting evil instead of perpetrating it.
Did Kevin just put âgardenâ in air quotes? It sounded like he did. They do have a garden. We saw it. Multiple times.
Alice looks good in white. And crazy XD Wear a silky camisole out in the world as a shirt. You do you, girl. I love the orange/red "yeah I used to be a Serpentâ outfit from S2 and hope that comes back at some point.
Why do they choose the creepiest area of Mercy to do interviews? I enjoyed it, weirdly enough. Made their facial expressions reminisce of unimpressed teens sitting in on a scary story. Also, I love how itâs just a check mark box of YES or NO on whateverâs on the sheet and Evelyn didnât bother marking the last one.
Hermione, the whiney ex-wifey. What was she gonna do if Hiram actually stayed down during those 2 murder attempts? Girl, all you had to do was hold those tubes of oxygen and heâd be taking a dirt nap
Archieâs face as he makes a healthy shake while Jughead noms on chips made me laugh. Classic. Also, any time Archie eats something unhealthy he looks anxious like it will immediately deflate his abs. The prison storyline is silly. Still. Am I the only one whoâs still confused by Mad Dogâs status?
The Varchie scene. Sigh. Sometimes I want to bite Archieâs nose because Iâm not passionate enough to slap him but Iâm frustrated enough I wanna leave a pointy little imprint for a minute. âYou worked so hardâŚbeforeâŚâ Oh like Mary, Sierra, and Betty did as well when you were in trial? And yes, Veronica worked her butt off too and made CUPCAKES for your return! THE CUPCAKES! Iâm still upset about it.
âYes, they wear white after Labor DayâŚâ Is it intentional that Cherylâs wearing white in this scene? Foreshadowing? Love the little detail on her sweater and Bettyâs red sweater as if sheâs an ally for the Blossoms.
Ok Iâm loving the over-the-top nonsense of Jughead with a switchblade demanding they look for gargoyles on telephone poles and confiscate âgaming equipment.â The Serpents oughtta get a PS4 or something. I love Deputy!Serpents. SOMEONE has to actually do some investigating in this town. And ass-kicking? And pin-pushing? Hilariously enough. Did anyone else notice Jughead thanked a kid named âJasonâ on the walkie? Is there a Serpent without a stupid nickname? Or is that a codename?! So many questions.
Ha! FP is mad the Serpents âruinedâ his bust. Like, sorry for doing your job before you, sir.
BETTY SNOOPER! What a nickname. Love you, girl.
ELUCIDATE THAT. Damn, sir. You know how to use that vocabulary. I never had an affinity CMM as a teen but heâs got some vibes Iâm digging. Like the colorful candles intermixed with the regular ones.
I love how Elio shows up in a full suit to antagonize men he doesnât know and walks away after it appears Archie is more interested in Fight Club Light
Ok Cheryl has a daddy kink. I know sheâs a canon lesbian but canon also has her very interested in the DILFs as eye-candy. Ooooh I cringed when she called him âEddie.â
I had to rewatch the Archie and Juvie Crew Popâs scene to get the significance of the guy saying âIf I never ate anything but these burgers again, Iâd die happy.â WHELP! Good news, person I presume is âBaby Teeth!â
People are terrible at assassination in Riverdale. Why send her a fish? Thatâs a decent dinner if she could cook. Which I somehow doubt, despite her waitressing at Popâs. Now her apartment smells.
Betty stands alone in a sea of psychos
Oh my god Hiramâs little SPOOOON! Heâs just trying to eat his tiny snacks in peace. He is so done with being accused of everything XD Honestly, heâs probably as sick of his storylines as we are. Also, is that a man with the Olympic torch on the left? Is that gonna be his S4 storyline? Hiram goes for Gold?
Uuuugh I know it was a useless but cute scene and Bughead are so soft I wanna cry. Theyâre glowing.
Are there ribbon-cutting ceremonies for prisons? Only in Riverdale, I guess.
Maybe thereâs a good reason Betty didnât ask Archie to be her mole at the Farm. Heâd definitely join them or just break stuff with his new boxing crew and be like, âLOOK, BETTY! I DID WHAT YOU ASKED :Dâ
So the juvie guys know the same Serpent deputy secret signals, huh? This sequence is so Riverdale. And Jughead takes NO ONE up with him except Mr. Crowbar? Look at this crazy fight sequence. Good thing the Gargoyles choose to wear masks that limit their vision or our boys may have been in trouble. Because in this DARK SHOW with 99% leather and jeans on boys, how would they know who was who otherwise?
Omg Rhino!Archie is on the loose! I have mixed feelings about the raid sequence.
The ascending window-escape wasnât really a build-up? They needed some creepy dialogue or something more than that one line. That fall looked pretty painful though? At least he didnât snag the beanie on a stray plank.
Ok this show doesnât get how marriage and annulment works. But thatâs okay. Hiram can be like Henry VIII and make his own rules. Itâs Riverdale.
VERONICA! You schemey schemer! Iâd clutch my pearls if we still had any!
Okay does Gladys genuinely not care if Jughead gets shot? Like, she doesnât actively want to murder him but sheâd be fine if he was gone? Because that SUCKS. And giving the Gargoyles guns, she knew that was a possibility. Okay, lady. Game on. Jug should tell his dad. Oh man. My heart.
Betty, my precious snoopy angel! Find Edgarâs tapes and Evelynâs if you can!
âLike a seance?â anyone else having flashbacks to Jasonâs wake and Betty and Juggie beinâ cute lil detectives? CherylâŚoh Cheryl. You saw Jason move on. CARRY ON MY WAYWARD BLOSSOM~ Also, I know the Toni breakup thing was a ruse, but uhâŚwhere is she? Just pretending to be broken up with Cheryl? Not caring that sheâs in a cult? Alrighty then.
I wonder if Archie or Hiram kept the random trophies in the gym. Again, Iâm gonna randomly say thatâs gonna be a future season storyline. Forget state champs, these teens wanna get to the Olympics, only to be undermined by their jealous parents!
Okay Betty in a scooped/V-neck? Nice. Also, it looks like Alice is wearing a sheep pin which makes me laugh and also die a little inside.
Alice. You have a daughter. Two, in fact. Neither of whom you have a good experience with because youâre a crap mom, so of course the imaginary dead son is your favorite.
Betty vs. Evernevers! Hell yes! Can we have V join Team Betty more actively as a badass and ignore the speakeasy/divorce stuff in favor of righteous awesome? âK thanks!
The Baby Teeth stuff was gross. No thanks. Next.

The Basics
1. Give their full name, and describe them or post a picture! (Height, build, hair, eye, and skin color, etc.)
Adora Daisy Addicks. Sheâs got brown eyes, a swimmerâs body, scars up and down her back with a few on her arms. Darker skinned and has a lovely black afro.
2. How old are they?
23
3. Sexuality and gender?
Lesbian, cis woman
Pre-Game
1. How did they end up at the Hope County Sheriffâs Department? How long have they worked there?
It was sort of a chance opening thing that she applied for and got. She had to move to the area, but she decided it was worth it. She hasnât been there more than 2 months when the shit goes down for Joseph.
2. Relationship with Pratt, Hudson, and Whitehorse?
She isnât the biggest fan of Pratt. Heâs too loud and sheâs sound sensitive when her hearing aids are in. She has to turn them down near him.
Hudson becomes one of her closest friends! She knows sign so they can talk a little easier than Adora can with others. Helps that theyâre both lesbians.
Adora things Whitehorse is pretty cool! At first sheâs a little iffy, but he becomes a sort of bonus father figure. Which is cool cause she already has two dads.
3. Do they have an education?
Yep! Gotta to be a cop.
4. Where are they from? Did they speak a different language there?
Washington. The state. Knows english and ASL fluently. Is trying to learn other forms of ASL. Knows some spanish.
5. Is there anyone outside the valley that might have come looking for them?
Her dads. They wouldâve come for her and her brother Adam.
6. Did they have a religious background of any kind?
Sheâs Jewish! She does her best to keep kosher whenever possible. She observes the holidays too, going home to her dads whenever possible.
Inside Hope County
1. What was going through their head when the helicopter went down and during the subsequent chase?
She was sure sheâd die. She sort of doesnât care itâs her death, itâs more a brief thought of âmy family will be so sadâ before she passes out, along with disappointment in herself for leaving Adam alone.
2. Were they afraid of Joseph and Edenâs Gate? Angry?
Angry more than anything. As a Jewish lesbian of color, sheâs been yelled at by white christian men most of her life. Sheâs got practice.
3. Did they trust Dutch?
Yeah. She isnât sure why she does, but then she meets Jess and is like âoh this is a family i can trust. Itâs geneticâ.
4. How did they feel about their team being taken by the cult, did they count them as lost, did they want them back, did they not care?
Her priority was Hudson. Sheâs not close with Pratt, she doesnât care about the marshall, but Hudson she puts at the top of her list. Sheâs one of the only people that keeps Adora from feeling alone in the county.
5. How did they take to the idea of being part of, if not leading, the resistance?
Sort of a âmay as wellâ sort of thing. Sheâs a hardy type of person and if she can help, she will. Her entire religion has multiple religions based out of âthey tried to kill us and they failedâ.
6. Which companions did they recruit, and who did they travel with the most?
Jess was first and she never left Adoraâs side after that. She got everyone, but Jess was the only one who if you saw Jess, Adora was probably nearby.
7. Did they have time to find romance amidst the chaos? How did they do it?
Yes. She, well, walking into the lumber mill, killed some peggies, opened a cage and was suddenly head over heels, completely smitten, and every other way to say it, with one Jess Black. It took a bit, but they most definitely ended up an item. Iâve got so much planned for them, actually.
8. Feelings about Joseph?
She despises this man with every fiber of her being. She casually hated him for his whole deal before, but what really sealed it is how he talks about killing his infant daughter. She wants nothing more than to end him.
9. Feelings about the other Seeds?
Jacob: She hates him. A fuck ton. A whole lot.
John: More hate! For what he did to Hudson and for the word on her chest. She wears WRATH proudly. She will be wrathful and angry and she will have her justice.
10. How did they handle having to kill animals and other humans? Had they done it before?
Sheâd gone hunting before. Thatâs not an issue. With humans, it was tougher, but for every peggie she killed, she saved more innocents. If you kill a killer, the number of killers in the world remains the same. Thatâs why you kill as many killers as you can.
11. Which canon ending did they choose in-game, and would you have changed the ending at all?
Fighting.
But Adora is not the Judge. Adora did not get taken by Joseph. Adora made it to the prepper hideaway sheâd found and shared with Jess, Grace, and Hudson. In my ending, all of them make it there and Pratt is the Judge.
Personal
1. Favorite weapon(s)?
Bow and Sin Eater
2. Stealth or firepower?
Stealth!
3. How did they spend their time, when not fighting peggies?
She loves to fish. She fishes whenever she can.
4. Where did they live during the events of the game?
Started out sort of in Dutchâs bunker or where ever she could find a safe place to sleep, eventually ended up finding an abandoned bunker that was still stocked (the owner probably having been killed by peggies). She turns it into her own hideaway, letting only three others (Jess, Grace, and Hudson) know where it is.
5. Any other facts you want to share about your Deputy!
Sheâs deaf! She was captain of her swimming team through grade school and college. Iâve got an entire story planned out for her and Jess after they get out of the bunker.

Holby city and casualty & biphobia
Holby city and casualty have recently been trying to step up when it comes to diversity, especially when it comes to sexuality, and in most cases this has been done well. The Dom and Isaac storyline in particular was written well. They have a history of trying to tackle sensitive topics with a lot of grace, and are well above average on the diversity scale compared to similar shows.
But, there is a clear pattern of biphobia across both sister shows that I want to draw attention to. Not because I donât appreciate the efforts from the shows, but because I have a feeling the writers and some audience members might not even understand how harmful some of the biphobia on the show could be. So this is just to show you where some areas can be improved.
Letâs start with casualty, as thereâs less to talk about in that show compared to holby city.
1. Jez
I really like Jez as a character, but right from the get go he has been the stereotypical oversexualized bisexual. Yes, people can enjoy having a lot of sex, but when itâs done in reference to a bisexual character it just seems iffy to me. Itâs like heâs having more sex because heâs with both men and women on different days of the week. Then, when we finally see him starting a relationship with Louise (weâll get to her in a minute, wow) he breaks it off - for reasons other than his sexuality, admittedly - and is very soon in a relationship with his current boyfriend. To me this seems like heâs being pushed around partners quicker than any other character because thereâs âmore choiceâ. You donât really see this with anyone else. Casualty love pairing people up but they usually drag out one couple and one love interest for months, but bisexual characters move from partner to partner.
Sidenote: as a bisexual person, the more choice thing is a myth. You might be in a club with 200 people and not fancy any of them, no matter their gender.
And, of course heâs attracted to multiple genders and can end up with anyone. But the fact they pair him with men more frequently seems slightly dismissive to me. The writers have not stated a preference, and there may well be a preference, but they are not using the opportunity to address biphobia toward bisexual people who end up with someone of another gender to their own. Obviously letâs add yes give me all those same sex couples, i love it, but they arenât exploring this enough at all. I want more same sex couples on mainstream tv but I just wish they would take the chance to explore different aspects of the bisexual dating experience.
Iâve been thinking about this post for months and before that they had never referenced Jez as bi. Now in the last week they have, and thatâs amazing and Iâm really happy about it. But it took the writers A YEAR. I KNOW THIS, BECAUSE I WAS WAITING. When Jez first talked about his sexuality it was âfluidâ or âunlabeledâ or some other such nonsense that basically meant they didnât have to say the b word. They have since rectified this as stated, but when even contemplating writing a bi character, do some fucking research beforehand guys, it isnât hard. And yes I know some people donât like labels, but when itâs done in tv it seems like a lazy excuse and we all know it.
2. Louise
When Louise started her brief romance with Jez she was hesitant because of his sexuality. Jez said that it's ok and that it doesnât affect their relationship, but no one really said that her opinion was uninformed, let alone wrong. It was basically something she wasnât comfortable with and no one called her out on it and itâs never been mentioned again.
This scene was sort of infamous for me because this is the scene where Louise said âItâs your choice.â
Choice? Choice? C H O I C E???/
And the worst thing is Jez didnât even call her out on it. He just let her call his sexuality a life choice and then got into a relationship with this woman who didnât respect this part of him. Are you kidding me? I might be forgiving of ignorance when we learn from it, but mate. No way would this happen. And, not to mention that Louise is a trained health professional and should know about different sexualities by now.
3. Toby
For those who are slightly newer to casualty, Toby was a very sweet natured f1 a couple of years ago. Very timid for a long time.
So, after a traumatic experience, he had an ill advised relationship with the pregnant daughter of a senior staff member (all above board, it just probably wasnât the best idea given their issues at the time). After some mistakes, he sought out the help of a counsellor, Ben, who he ended up dating. So, we have a canon bisexual character.
Then, when the affair was exposed - It shouldnât have been happening anyway because Iâm pretty sure you shouldnât date your therapist, so that seems predatory in itself - Toby was ashamed of his sexuality and accused Ben of taking advantage of him. Ok, so they end up together when Toby decided to leave the hospital butâŚ.man.
The whole âashamed of his sexuality, accuses colleague of taking advantageâ was something the show did again with gay character Seb in recent months. This isnât solely biphobia in that sense, but general shitty writing for lgbtq characters. Itâs a storyline that paints them as malicious, ashamed, sneaky. This happened in Holby with Dom and Malik as well, and itâs just a horrible storyline that seems to only happen with lgbtq characters and I do not know why at all.
4. Alicia
In recent times Alicia found out her father was cheating on her mother with another man. She had a massive problem with this, mostly because of the cheating, but she couldnât seem to accept her dadâs sexuality. Yes, cheating is always wrong. I canât remember exactly how her father identifies but if he is bisexual then....well, he didnât just marry her mum out of convinience, he loved her. And he could have cheated on her with anyone. And to me it seemed Alicia was more angry that it was a man than anything else (please correct me if her father does identify as gay, though the point still stands about Aliciaâs reluctance)
It just seemed like it was thrown in there to make it âworseâ or something and Alicia was sort of awful about it all really and used it as an excuse to ruin her own life (though my issues with that character are for another time)
So now, the holby city section
1. Serena (/Bernie)
Ok, so. Before the avid fanbase for this ship, like, comes at me, let me just disclaim: yes, anyone can identify however they want! But! When it speaks to a pattern of biphobia! I have an issue with it!
So, we had the really wonderfully acted love story between two older women on Holby, Bernie and Serena. Bernie has had a relationship with a woman after the breakdown of her marriage but Serena never has. They had a really lovely story that I enjoyed.
But the word bisexual was rarely, if ever, used. When Serena was first coming to terms with her kiss with Bernie, she tried out calling herself a lesbian. Even though she had many relationships with men and one even after she first kissed Bernie. So, because she did have a romantic connection with Robbie after Bernie, I think itâs pretty clear sheâs bisexual, and this would have been a lovely discussion if they didnât just start calling her a lesbian straight away (same with Bernie, even though she was also married to a man. Iâm more familiar with Serenaâs story so it might well be that Bernie was always a lesbian but Iâm pretty sure she reads as bi too but maybe thatâs my opinion.)
Thereâs also that fucking awful scene in which her and Raf test out whether they want to kiss each other. She does not want to kiss Raf, and so they declare she must be a lesbian.
WHAT?
Iâm sorry, I didnât realize not wanting to kiss your mate, a skinny scottish man who cries too much, was how we measure our sexualties now. Just because I donât want to kiss every man I know doesnât make me a lesbian. You can be a bisexual woman and not want to kiss some guy you know at work, guys. In case you didnât know.
Iâm just like...just say bisexual. It isnât hard.
2. Lee
Ok, so, Dom, whom I love dearly, started a relationship with a man named Lee. Lee stole all of his stuff. Lee was not a nice man. Lee also had a pregnant girlfriend. Lee is bisexual.
Lee comes back after having been in prison and proceeds to physically attack people on the ward.
Itâs like they equated the lies and the cheating with his sexuality. Instead of showing us a positive relationship between a gay person and a bisexual person (which is another issue within the community itself that they could have done something positive with but nope) they showed us a gay man being lied to, cheated on and attacked by a bisexual man who seemed to have mental health issues. Also his sexuality seemed to be directly related to his mental health issues, like he was being self destructive and cheating because of his repressed sexuality. Then he attacks Domâs new partner and says Dom still loves him and all of that, so his mental health is always tied up with his feelings for Dom which I donât this is helpful in anyway.Â
Like, do I even need to explain how harmful that is? I donât think so.
3. Fleur Fanshawe
Biphobia from gay characters on holby is not something new. Instead of being progressive in their writing, the holby writers just choose to give into stereotypes again and again. Fleur Fanshawe was an older gay woman = great. What wasnât great was how she treated her ex girlfriend, Sophia.
So my memory isnât a plus because I hated the storyline but what I remember is that, after they broke up, Sophia went back to her boyfriend. Fleur was very angry about this, about her âgoing back to menâ. It was all just written very weirdly and just wasnât good representation for bi/gay relationships. The behaviour, again, was never called out, and because their exit dates are the same I assume they got together again, even though Fleur always seemed to look down on Sophiaâs bisexuality.
This is just another example of bisexual characters experiencing shame reinforced by their partners and others around them. Itâs just tiring to me. Itâs exhausting that the bi characters are always having to explain themselves or feel guilty.
4. Try be bi
Thatâs what Iâm calling this section. This is the section where we talk about the odd, random, bisexual kisses that donât seem to have a bearing on the plot.
Zosia, who is bipolar, is usually a character written very sensitively. She kissed Sophia whilst experiencing a bad mental health episode. I cannot speak to whether this behaviour is accurate and I wonât pretend to be an expert on bipolar disorder. However I think this kiss was thrown in there just to be shocking and to be a symptom of mental illness. Zosia is never confirmed bisexual and has never done anything like that afterwards, so I think it was a cheap shock ploy and it did a disservice not just to bisexuality but to mental illness as well. This was represented as a symptom of her mania but I think there were probably better ways of doing that.
Then quite a few years ago we have Donna, a nurse, having a one night stand with lesbian friend Micki. She was drunk at the time I think, and she never had any other relationships with women. Again, cheap shocks. Bisexuality is not something you just try out for the night. This is like those girls who kiss each other at parties without understanding that itâs for someone else's benefit and that they, as heterosexuals, are privileged above lgbtq people doing the same thing. Just a weird, unnecessary interlude in general.
5. Lofty
Now last night nurse Lofty was confirmed as having feelings for a man and a woman. He said âHe loved them both.â Not in a poly way, since he left the woman because of his feelings for her brother. Now I along with many others welcomed this development! I want more lgbtq rep!
What I didnât like is everyone suddenly calling him gay because he kissed a man, when he literally said in the same episode that he did love the woman he was with at the time. The media was also to blame since they basically described it as a gay bombshell. It was, in my opinion, a bisexual bombshell.
And, ok again this is my view this isnât fact or how you have to see it, but for me this came out of nowhere, since his sexuality wasnât ever brought up before. It almost seems as if, possibly, they are introducing it as a way to let Dom be with someone? And ok this is not confirmed but the two lgbtq characters on the same ward usually get together.
Look I like Lofty and this could be great. However, it might have been nice to introduce a new bisexual character without shoving it onto a preexisting character for the sake of convenience.
6. Jas and Morven
Now, given what I just said about Lofty and the writers randomly pushing bisexuality onto existing characters just because, you might think - Hold on a sec...but hear me out.
I love these two, my beautiful daughters. I adore them and their friendship.
But the friendship took a turn when, after weeks of Morven connecting online with a man called Nathan, she found out Nathan was actually her best friend Jasmine, cat fishing her because of her own loneliness.
Before this, Morven had said sheâd really connected to âNathanâ and that she had very strong romantic feelings for him.
But they disappear as soon as she finds out it was Jasmine. Itâs like, the words, the talking, the feelings were all genuine. And yes, Nathan was a fiction, but I think they could have Roxanneâd this and had her realise her feelings for this person were real, and that in actual fact that person was Jasmine. But no. They just had them fall out instead of falling in love. No bisexual roommates for me.
Oh and whilst weâre here, letâs talk about how apparently you can only have one lgbtq couple a ward (Berena as opposed to both Berena and Jasmine/Morven) Raf and Fletch, also best friends who lived together and helped raise Fletchâs children together. Jokingly described their relationship as a âsexless platonic marriageâ. Couldnât make it a relationship? For whatever reason. I guess what Iâm trying to say is that the writers consistently deny friends to lovers relationships that have basis and positivity in favour of dramatic coming out stories, shock kisses and various other biphobic shitty things.
7. Dan Hamilton
In the words of my good friend, this was a real shit show.
Briefly romantically involved with the likes of Chrissie, Dan was originally portrayed back in 2011 as a ladies man. He shared a kiss with canon gay character Malik. This attracted criticism because apparently this was a ârepetition of gay storylines seen on other dramasâ. And ok this was a few years ago but...really
The storyline starts with him having tension with Malik - especially after he finds out Malik is gay. When Malik threatens to report Dan for something he did on the ward, they fight and then share a kiss. After this Dan rushes to his then girlfriend Chrissie and confesses his love for her. He proceeds to just try and avoid Malik and forget about the kiss. This is what they said about the storyline at the time (they being producers)
"It really isn't a 'coming out' storyline. The focus really is on Dan's character. Dan is Mr Conventional â he wants Chrissie, he wants the wife, the house, the career and 2.4 children. It won't be about him coming out and coming to terms with his sexuality. If anything, the kiss with Malick has made him even more determined to try to have a conventional life â because that's what he wants the most."
I mean, yes I like the fact not every story is a coming out story but...it seems weird for them to put it that way, especially since it was a coming out storyline if weâre being honest. Because they never discuss the bisexuality in the same way they discuss being gay on the show. Seems suspicious that they try not to delve into bisexuality. Instead of really showing how he felt for Chrissie and Malik the story was more about him being ashamed. Because thatâs all the writers seem to know how to write. And I understand that itâs important to show these kind of struggles but...we never see Dom or Fleur or Malik being âashamedâ, only ever the men and women discovering their bisexuality. Malik tries to blackmail Dan, saying he would reveal their kiss to Chrissie. Itâs almost implied - intentionally or not - that the sexuality is the issue above the cheating.
Astill also said he hoped Dan would âtransform into a bisexual predator - no man or woman is safe from him.â I think the actor means he wanted Dan to be openly bisexual and as we know heâs a player, that that would still remain a part of his character. But the phrase bisexual predator is just fucking awful and harmful. When he left the show he did praise the fact Dan was the happiest weâd seen him after coming to terms with his sexuality (and I think leaving with another man?) and like, yes thatâs good, but it was such an overdone story and it had its flaws for definite, not the least of which was once again painting bisexuals as confused, repressed or sexual predators or cheaters. And it seems again, a cliche, to make one of the most sexual characters bisexual, because it seems to go hand in hand on this show.
Very quick end point to explain something I said earlier: I want more same sex couples on my screen, but by showing a bisexual person in a relationship with someone of the same gender you could: explain some of the problems within the community as regards to biphobia - but that isnât happening. By showing a bisexual person with someone of another gender you could delve into the myth of bisexual privelage - but that isnât happening either. Instead what we have is bisexual characters very often only dating the opposite gender after their bisexuality is revealed. We see this with Dan, with Jez to an extent (he seems to have more positive relationships with men) Toby and most likely with Lofty. Again, not saying this is wrong or that these characters canât have a preference. But the preference is never stated, itâs just implied. What this suggests to me is that the writers are having these characters âchooseâ. Which is another myth that needs to be dismantled. Bisexual people do not stop being bisexual because they are with someone of a certain gender, but for the purposes of writing these shows thatâs what it feels like. Bisexuality is revealed as a shock, through a bombshell featuring a same sex relationship, and then forgotten. It feels as if these writers are using bisexuality as a stepping stone for the characters actually being gay. Now people might not agree with this and everyoneâs experiences are different, but to me as a bisexual viewer that is how it feels.
I guess what Iâm saying is theyâve had enough bisexual characters by now that they should be writing them as well as they do other lgbtq characters. For shows that usually handle things very well and sensitively they are still failing in this department. I love these shows but itâs 2017 guys it isnât hard to talk to bisexual people, or you're bisexual viewers, fix your mistakes, talk to your target audience and the audience youâre trying to represent and see where you can do better. Why the fuck are we still having this conversation.
