ok but actually I think one of the really compelling things about mistynat and the reason natalie is so drawn to misty is that, among tai and shauna, nat is the only one who has a realistic response to what happened to them. taissa and shauna are so busy buckling under their layers of repression, of trying to compensate for their trauma with intense performance of social success. taissa and shauna are so busy trying to convince themselves they’re fine.

but misty, meanwhile, is the opposite of that.

like misty arrives in the narrative in ‘96 in a similar place to nat. in that nat has already looked her shadowy depths in the face — largely through her upbringing, through the death of her father. and misty meanwhile seems to have this natural (?) predisposition to be unfazed, unsqueamish, no matter the terror, no matter the blood. they come to it in different ways, but they’re both able to look their lives in the eye and face the truth of them.

and I think nat must be craving that. she comes into f sharp wanting answers, and misty is the only one she goes to for them. she makes a fucking beeline for her. and she assumes misty sent the postcard, yeah, but once shown any evidence to the contrary, she drops that quickly, trusts misty, takes misty’s information. again and again nat lets misty into her confidence, seeks her out. and despite her vocal disdain of misty, in her actions, she keeps on seeking her out, letting her in.

like, natalie has this baseline trust of misty from the jump. and that’s because nat values straightforwardness. consider her refrain from the pilot to doomcoming — that’s because it’s bullshit — i’ve had enough of your weird bullshit lottie. nat values integrity. and misty may not have any of that, but she is straightforward. what you see is what you get. And I think that’s like a drink of cold water to Natalie. she craves and is endeared by Misty’s openness.

and I think it’s very critical that misty is endeared right back. as far as misty’s concerned, the sun rises and sets with natalie. nat’s refusal to take bullshit, Nat’s inability to do anything but be true to her experience and trauma no matter the mess? to everyone else it’s part of what makes nat an object of derision. but to misty it’s all just more to love.

jackie tells nat at the bonfire you are so completely yourself . i think it’s interesting that while misty isn’t there in that moment, when we do see her at the bonfire, it’s natalie perceiving her. perhaps just a hallucination. an extension of nat’s consciousness. which tracks, given that that line could apply to misty as well. misty quigley has never been anything but completely herself. and both of them are shamed for that fact. but it’s also the very thing that draws them helplessly to each other.
