I legit cried when me:le was announced. I might be a bit dumb but when a game is remastered does it mean like we’ll get the ME trilogy to be extra crisp (I’m talking with nice cutscenes, better expressions)?? I think I’m dumb because I’m a bit confused lol
Hi Nonnie. I cried too  (´。• ω •。`)  The rest of this answer is cut for length.
You’re not dumb. First, though there’s usually a delineation between a “remaster” (usually these are like ports with visual enhancements and sometimes some additional changes) and a “remake” (usually these are old titles that are being reimagined, from the ground up - i.e. a remaster is when they reuse old code, a remake is when there’s no old code) there’s not really a games industry standard on what a “remaster” is. Some companies simply scale-up to a higher framerate and resolution, others do more and make changes to aspects such as lightning, environments, and models. Second, the only main piece of info we have to go on is the announcement post, with full and more specific information due to come in the new year. Third, during the time period when the remaster was a rumor/leak, there was a lot of varying takes and spins on the rumor in the outlets where it was reported on (whether it was a remaster or remake changed depending on what source it was that was relaying Jeff Grubb’s info-drop lol), as well as extensive accompanying debate in the fandom, where folks were outlining their varying hopes of what it would entail. All that stuff can bleed over and make things somewhat confusing.
Here’s what we know about ME:LE specifically: it will have updated textures, updated shaders, updated models, updated effects, updated technical features, faster framerates, sharper resolution, 4k Ultra HD optimization and other visual enhancements, as well as the targeted enhancements and forward compatibility required for the nextgen consoles. It’s a remaster, not a remake, and their stated goal isn’t to reimagine the trilogy but to modernize the experience “so that fans and new players can experience the original work in its best possible form”. It sounds like it’s going to be on Unreal Engine 3, which is the engine the original trilogy was on, so it doesn’t seem that we can expect a change to UE4 or whatever. It looks like Abstraction (a game dev and platform adaptation studio who create, adapt and publish games “from- and to any imaginable platform”) have been working with BioWare on the project and providing them with engineering support. Someone who worked on the project for a few months reminded us that it is a remaster not a remake, adding however that for his part he tested out ME1 in Steam and in his opinion “the new game looks much better than the old one”. We also know from the N7 Day cast and crew reunion panel that the voice actors didn’t know that the remaster was a thing until the same time we did.
Also, back when the remaster was in the ‘rumor’ phase, the original news-dropper Jeff talked about it on a podcast and said that some of the reasons for its delay were to do with ME1 and its gameplay:
Specifically, the reasons for the pushback center around ME1. Its remastered version wasn’t coming up to the level or standard of where the other two games in the bundle are at, and the team were worried it would bring down the overall quality of the whole package if they didn’t address this. These issues with ME1 are both in terms of its visuals and gameplay. With the extra time, the team are going to focus on ME1 and try to make sure it lives up to peoples’ expectations. [link]
How much water that info holds remains to be seen though.
To your question specifically, we can expect it to look crisper graphically. Cutscenes will look better due to the graphical and visual enhancements such as updated textures and updated models. It’ll also look nicer due to the sharper resolution and optimization for 4k Ultra HD. But I wouldn’t be expecting new or completely- or dramatically overhauled cutscenes, and whether or not expressions themselves will be improved on will depend on whether they’re doing work on things like animations and lip-syncing (and whether that’s possible). Basically my impression of it right now as things stand is that looks-wise it’s going to be like playing the MET with a bunch of graphics improvement mods on, and that other changes will be minimal (probably looking at stuff like bug fixes and maybe some quality of life updates). Mostly the same games with a fresh coat of paint and minor tweaks.
Hope this helps some :)
