do u rly think the writers assumed ppl didnt like simon petrikov tbh.... like they gave him flaws n stuff but it's clear that they liked him seeing as how they gave him a whole focus series?? a character having realistically written flaws does NOT equate to the writers assuming ppl dislike him. the showrunners were literally talking about how much they like simon as they were announcing episodes.
ok THAT i will say is a valid read lol i shot that one at the hip because it isnt exactly the same? but it has some visceral similarities to me
no i do not think the writers wanted people to hate simon, i think they wanted to make him 1) as wet and pathetic a cat as possible and 2) write a story that calls him out for not paying enough attention to betty. And i DO think this could have actually been an amazing setup, the indictment of the man who we see first introduced slowly chipping away at himself to save marcy. But, the narrative haranguing didnt feel like it was really deserved, it comes so fast and the way it is directed at simon felt unearned in the way that feels reminiscent of similar narrative situations. i feel they misunderstood where a lot of the audience would be with simon going into eps 9-10. The ending also isn't quite on the same page with the rest of adventure time, and even lot of f&c itself. I think the writers wanted us to feel bettys disappointment in simon was justified (and the setup for that disappointment didnt land for me) and wrote the narrative in a way similar to the way characters in the post were handled where someone who is sympathetic but with some flaws that definitely could be dug into is suddenly indicted a lot more by the narrative in ways that pacingwise start feeling abrupt and unearned because they fail to weave it in with simon as we see him in AT, earlier eps of f&c. im sad because i feel like they couldve tied episodes 9-10 much more deeply into simons character than they did i guess? but yeah no there was some complex mathematical conversions happening in my brain when i saw that post and said petrikov but. i will stand by my theory lol

analysis anon again with more Thoughts. pb’s anger seems to be expressed through physical punishment towards mint king (ex. forced restraint) and it definitely reads to me, from whats been shown, that her actions are less calculated and more a parallel to simon. in f&c. we see that one of the symptoms of his pretty severe ptsd is sudden, quick episodes of rage (something i intensely relate to as a trauma survivor ngl), complete with consistent triggers. the ice king is the source of his trauma, and people often co pare him negatively to ice king using fionna and cake. so fionna and cake became a trigger to him, resulting in him becoming enraged with astrid (a CHILD) and causing him to basically scream in fionnas face when he first sees her. likewise, betty is another trigger to him, probably for the guilt he feels in her fate, and, importantly, when choose goose pushes his buttons to much it puts simon over the edge with his ritual and leads to him killing choose goose.
and so you can see a throughline. the winter king is the source of her trauma, and she no doubt knows him VERY well, since shes shown to have basically stalked him as candy queen. who knows how many little behaviors and quirks he has that could set her off? and while simons episodes stayed MOSTLY verbal, pb is not nearly as passive a person as simon. i have little doubt that her anger could quickly become physical. its a twisted exposure therapy that just makes both people miserable.
and i gotta say, theres something fascinating about the experience of suffering for reasons outside your knowledge. candy queen didnt know why she was suddenly so obsessed and lonely and miserable. likewise, mint king (without winter kings memories) has no clue why the person who made him suddenly becomes so upset with him, seemingly for no reason.
any au that injects trauma analysis makes me obsessed graaaaah
Reaalllly good stuff omg
My main thing with this au is as awful of a situation as it is, I don't want PB to come off in too bad of a light, God knows I don't want to go down victim blaming territory, she's just a hurt person doing a bad thing and not really thinking about the reality of her actions so to speak?
I'd imagine the au story ending on a really sorta.. neutral note? They talk and go their separate ways, not really forgiving each other fully but at the same time needing that space to recover and heal.
