SAGAFTRA ratifying kinda sucks tbh.
Not only did only like 38% of people turn up to vote, but it wasn't nearly as close as I had hoped it would be.
I work at a 3rd party marketing vendor which makes movie and TV show trailers. Since the strikes this summer we have been using AI to generate voices. This was meant to keep production alive during the strikes... which totally defeats the purpose of a strike.
The fact that there's nothing protecting actors from being pressured into signing... the fact that puppeteers and bg actors and voice talent are being left on the cutting room floor...
... the fact that if you're not a working actor as a senior that your health insurance can be cut off by the union...
We now have seen technology which can generate relatively convincing human movements. We have had the technology to generate voices for a while now. When the time comes to renegotiate in 3 years, why would the studios take SAGAFTRA seriously?
They can keep things running with just some clean audio and a photograph. Strikes won't matter because you're not a threat to their business anymore.
