I love the idea of the M.E having some hold over Knuckles’ memories. This ageless omnipresent gem KNOWS things. It’s intelligent and capable of communicating, showing images, giving commands and guidance. It’s demonstrated the ability to manipulate a creature’s biology. It 100% knows what the truth behind Knuckles’ mysterious backstory, and is likely largely responsible for Knuckles being in his current position. For some reason, it doesn’t want him to know. And, though he voices curiosity, he doesn’t seem to want to know, either. Thinking about it gives him a sense of foreboding. Maybe Knuckles asked the Emerald to remove his past? Maybe there was something there that was too painful for him to handle, so he asked to forget?
