Because I finished Katrielle Layton and the Millionaires' Conspiracy last night, it's time for Thoughts™ because holy shit.
THE GOOD
Kat Layton is the cutest detective on the planet and I adore her
I too love solving puzzles and eating lots of good food
THE PUN NAMES HAVE ME CACKLING (Grant Sloanes? Gene Ohm? HONESTLY)
STACHENSCARFEN AND GRANNY R RETURN HALLELUJAH
Kat is just. Completely unfazed by this talking dog on her doorstep. It talks, so what?
Sherl, the dedicated grouchy voice of reason in all circumstances, is a very good dog
The outfit changing thing was so cute (and honestly the cardinal cape coat is my favorite)
I actually liked that the cases ranged from theft to murder and so on without all of them being super grim
The last case had a little of the original Layton flavor to it with the mansion and whatnot
The information about Ernest totally blindsided me and I may have cried a little but it was so good
The name "The Seven Dragons" is just nifty as hell
That scene when Kat and Sherl are on the run from the giant metal ball, Indiana Jones style
The NPCs used for the puzzles were wonderful and I'm always a fan of spotting them over and over again
Benny from San Grio! I wonder how old he is. It seems like he would probably be in his 20s or 30s or so
THAT CLIFFHANGER LMAO HEY LEVEL FIVE HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT FOE THE NEXT ONE?
THE LESS GOOD
Sometimes the mouth movements and captions didn't match what was being said during cutscenes, which seems a little sloppy compared to the previous games
The non-cutscene dialogue also had typos that couldn't be explained by heavy accents or anything
The episodic nature was fun, but given the opening cutscene implying Kat is searching for the professor, they weren't connected very well
Seriously, I miss the interconnected feeling the previous games have always done so well, and wrapping it up with one stunning post credits cutscene (okay to be fair that cutscene blew me away and I'm so damn hyped) didn't really do it for me
Sherl's case is just. Ignored the whole time pretty much, even though that's what kind of launches the game
The puzzles tend to be mostly really easy, or they're in the same spatial awareness vein as slider puzzles which means I suffer
We didn't see more of Emiliana and her backstory
What is Kat's backstory anyway? Beyond being raised by the professor, what else is there?
Kind of disappointed there weren't more clues about Ernest sooner because that kind of foreshadowing would have had great payoff
THE THEORIES AND BIG QUESTIONS
Didn't Kat write a letter to someone named Lucy at the game's start? If this is Lucy Baker and we get to see her and Alfendi, I'll cry very genuine tears
SHERL IS HERSHEL LAYTON I STAND BY THIS ABSURD DAMN THEORY
Look, he's a talking dog with amnesia, he makes jokes like "if that's true, I'm a professor of archaeology," the local cats say he's a "gentleman- no, gentledog," and Sherl and Hershel use the same letters
How Kat's dad has been turned into a talking dog is absolutely beyond me but DAMMIT I'm clinging to this
Bonus round: Dean Delmona jokes about him returning casually after being wrapped up in a big puzzle and GEE WHAT IS SHERL DOING NOW? HE'S SOLVING PUZZLES INCLUDING HIS OWN HISTORY
Speaking of which, holy shit, I feel like it's completely possible she's actually Luke's daughter and she's been adopted by the professor, given that she's not bothered by a talking dog and she loves puzzles and food and overall justice and kindness, which aren't hereditary necessarily but shhhh this is a game let me have this
But that still leaves a big ??? about why Luke (or whoever her bio parents are) wouldn't be there to raise her
Also there's a ??? about why she seems mostly indifferent about the professor; she says she wants to solve the riddle he left her, but she doesn't seem too choked up about his disappearance
How long has it been since the professor vanished anyways? It seems like it's been at least a couple years
Is Constable Barton the chief super now? Please let him be because that was a delightful detail in Mystery Room
Where are Grosky and Chelmey, just for kicks? I miss those damn inspectors and Hastings isn't the same
Though I hope Hastings is a Poirot joke with all my heart (Poirot's sidekick is Captain Hastings and in the David Suchet tv series, Poirot always talks about using the "little gray cells" so I may be reaching but also it's absolutely there)
