We have done our first Stabilised Rammed Wall. When we were starting our build our neighbour, Chris, asked what material we wanted to use for the new boundary fence, then he suggested rammed earth. Why of course we would jump at that! We used recycled concrete from Boral St Peter’s to keep our embodied energy down, a bit of river sand and cement 8:1:1 mix. The results are great - it was a day though. Our mixer had an arm ripped off so we ended up mixing all the materials dry in the back of the tip truck and with any Inner West Build we had to get creative with access - thank you to Hank and JJ for letting us pull out their fence so we could get access from 2 doors up! We have used Envisa 32mPa low carbon concrete for our topping slab which will be polished. The old slab was horizontally insulated to stop thermal bridging with wood fibre going up the walls over the original masonry. I met with Hiroaki Tajima who is building Japan’s first Hempcrete house from all Japanese materials in the last 300 years. The site is in Tochigi, near the historic town of Nikko, on a hemp farm. We discussed techniques and mixtures, ways that we have overcome obstacles and what to watch for. We were quite fortunate that there was a Shimenawa workshop running at the same time. This is a rare experience as it is not done very often and has been replaced by synthetic ropes of late - and it’s extremely labour intensive. Shimenawa is the rope tied around a shrine space, or across its entrance, to mark its sacred nature is called the shimenawa. Traditionally woven from hemp, but nowadays more frequently rice or wheat straw, this rope and its shide paper streamers is a common part of New Year decorations as well.
