Now for myself, I learned my skills makin' small ones out of bigguns from the ground up, first with a blacksmith hammer and wedge, then a maul, when I was tall enough. Gotta read the grain, and know where the wood is already trying to split, and then help it. The wood doesn't know it is trying to split or it wouldn't need the help, it's your job to read it.
I have a REALLY big logsplitter these days. I can do the same thing much faster, but the same know-how and technique applies even when you can multiply the force by a thousand. So I've always viewed the ballad of John Henry from a different perspective. I consider it another incident where racism led to bad decisions. Because a man who can read rock well enough to dig a tunnel with a hammer should have been driving the machine, not competing with it. Both man and machine should have survived the day, and made more progress, and the man would get smarter every day he worked with the new machine.

Tired of it.
Outside today moving items from the yard that I will be taking with me (pallets of bricks, metal siding, snowmobile project, atv project, ect...) into one area of the property, while clearing the house area for a better/cleaner look for prospective buyers.
Between the fire pit and the wood shed is a tree that had been dying for years and finally died this year. It's kind of small, total of maybe 18' tall but the main trunk is only about 8' tall and 10" round. I start lopping off the ends of the lower branches. Parts I'll put in the trash trailer, parts I cut for the kindling pile. Get to the point I have to use a saw to cut the branch off the trunk, I pull out my 1-man buck saw and had cut 4 branches off when my FIL shows up.
He gets upset because I'm using the bucksaw with my heart condition and in the (according to the news) deadly heatwave of 92 degrees. I should have my chainsaw (with the 26" bar) to cut off these 3" to 4" branches from the trunk. Because a handsaw it too hard to use.
Honestly, I'm tired of anyone who thinks working up a sweat, is working too hard, trying to tell me how I need to do things.
I like the physical nature of using hand tools. Keeps me from getting lazy. Even with my health issues.
I know how to pace myself, when I need to take a break or rest period and to drink plenty of liquids when working. Even before my health issues developed.
As for this "deadly" heatwave. I worked really heavy labor outdoors in hotter temperatures during the 1970's coming Ice Age and the 1980's Acid Rain periods than it has been around here for the last couple of decades.
I ignored him and finished cutting the branches with the bucksaw. Thinking I'll take the double bit axe tomorrow and cut the trunk down, then my draw knives and chisels to do something with the part of trunk I'm going to leave. No need to waste gas and oil to cut a 10" tree trunk.
