Week 2.1 : Research 0.8
Mum's story
My Mum was 19 when she was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer in the UK. She had one of the rarest forms of the cancer named Ovarian Dysgerminoma and was diagnosed when she was at stage 3.
My Mum was having severe abdominal pain when she knew to get checked out. Mum had an internal and external examination and when the doctor felt something large in her abdominal area, she was sent to get an ultrasound. The ultrasound detected a mass on the ovaries and the next day she had surgery to remove a tumour the size of a rugby ball from her left ovary. She was initially in hospital for five days during and after her surgery and they performed a oophorectomy. The tumour weighed half a stone which is 3.17kgs.
Mum was told she was clear from the cancer but 10 months later, she got a lump in her neck. She went into have a biopsy and had the lump removed but two days later, she got a call and was told that the lump was cancerous. The doctors did a full MRI to see where else the cancer had spread to and found that it was in her lymph nodes and behind her ribs. The initial cancer had spread to two other places in her body and two more tumours had grown. Because these tumours were behind her ribs, she was told she would go through three courses of chemotherapy. Because of the type of Chemotherapy she was doing, the doctors informed her that it would make her sterile. The doctors did a partial oophorectomy and her ovarian tissue got rushed to a hospital in London. The tissue was sent to Bournehall clinic in Cambridge where the tissue was cryogenically frozen. Once they had transferred her Ovarian tissue, she could start Chemotherapy.
Mum was originally scheduled for 4 courses of chemotherapy where she was in the hospital for 5 days at a time and then home for two weeks on and off. Once mum had recovered from that chemo and her white blood cell count was okay, she could continue with the next treatment. After the four lots of chemo were up, the doctors did a CT scan to see what was happening with the tumour and decided that mum needed further treatment. She was then given another two courses of chemotherapy and her last scan showed that the tumour had calcified. Mum was scanned every three months for a year to see whether it had returned. After a year, it was 6 months every 5 years and then once a year for another 5 years.
In 2002, My parents decided to see whether it was possible to have children despite mum's cancer. They saw multiple specialists in the beginning and eventually went to a fertility specialist. The doctors did tests and discovered that mum had slight ovarian function and that the only way she could have children was through IVF. Mum and dad went through a course of IVF and managed to produce six embryos. Only two of those six were viable and implanted but failed to work. Two months later, mum found out she was pregnant naturally and then a week later had a miscarriage. 3 months later she found out she was pregnant with me.

Bourne Hall in autumn. Have the Martians landed!? Ewell may be part of the outer suburbs of the London sprawl, but the village is very old. Henry VIII built Nonsuch Palace nearby that the mistress of Charles II let go into ruin with gambling debts. Ewell is a Saxon name for well/spring. Stane street, the Roman road from London to Chichester first headed to the spring. The Celts were here and probably a human presence much earlier with the spring that provides water year round (hunters at the end of the ice age?). Named after the original Bourne Hall on the site (the country house/estate in Ewell next to thespring and the start of the Hogsmill river), this early 70's building includes a library, function rooms and a dance floor and looks like a space ship or flying saucer that has landed. With the look of the place, and the history, it would be a great location for a Doctor Who episode! #Ewell #ewellspring #BourneHall #hogsmillriver #hogsmill #kevthenatureguide #spaceship #flyingsaucer #drwho (at Bourne Hall Ewell) https://www.instagram.com/p/CG4zVHIjtLL/?igshid=a7wr2utcrah8

Bourne Hall, built in the early 70's, looks like a spaceship had landed at the spring in Ewell. The original hall goes back to c1770 and Ewell has been around long before suburbia. Henry VIII built Nonsuch Palace nearby. Where the Hogsmill came out on the Thames at Kingston, there was a stone where Saxon Kings were crowned. The Roman road from London goes to the spring and there is evidence of Bronze Age settlement. And since the spring flows out of the downs (Epsom Downs of the original 'Derby' horse race), I guess people were here at the end of the ice age, sharing it with bears, lynx and wolves! #BourneHall #Ewell #naturalexplorer #hogsmillnaturereserve #ewellspring https://www.instagram.com/p/B-FdhP2DSNa/?igshid=1g1gkosxp0bl1
