“Bonn - Alte Freunde, Neue Feinde” has a new home - it’s now streaming on Netflix (so far it’s only in Germany and maybe a few German speaking countries…) ❤️
The creator of the show hasn’t ruled out another season, although that branch of story is most likely focus on the character Otto John.

Max as Wolfgang Berns in “Bonn - alte Freunde, neue Feinde” - Episode 1:
Synopsis:
London, New Year's Eve 1953/54 - 20-year-old Toni Schmidt (Mercedes Müller) takes care of the children of a wealthy London family, in whose town house she spends the turn of the year. Here she comes into contact with Lucie and her husband Otto John (Sebastian Blomberg), the President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV). The former resistance fighter in Graf Stauffenberg's inner circle is impressed by Toni's thoughtful manner.
Bonn, 1954 - It's the time of the Cold War. As head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Otto John pursues war criminals who have gone into hiding and fights against a resurgence of former Nazis in Germany. One of John's greatest adversaries is Reinhard Gehlen, head of the Gehlen Organization, a foreign intelligence service named after him. John is convinced that Gehlen is actively obstructing the hunt for former Nazi criminals, but he has no solid evidence of this. At the top of Otto John's wanted list is Alois Brunner, who was responsible for the deportation of hundreds of thousands of Jews during the war. Wolfgang Berns (Max Riemelt), one of John's best agents, also wants to track down Brunner.
In search of Brunner, Wolfgang follows a lead to the forger Viktor Heimann, who uses false papers to help former Nazis escape. When he breaks into Heimann's apartment, he surprises the orphan boy Schwarte, who promises to inform him of Heimann's return. But the plan is thwarted, Heimann flees and Wolfgang is beside himself with rage.
Meanwhile, Toni returns to Germany and is warmly welcomed by her mother Else, her father Gerd Schmidt (Jürgen Maurer) and her sister Ingrid. Toni's fiancé Hartmut (Julius Feldmeier) is also there and the joy of seeing them again is huge. Toni is impressed by the family's new wealth - the economic miracle has left remarkable traces. The building materials company is doing well and her father is a respected entrepreneur. But there are also downsides: Stefan, the only son, has not returned from the war and is considered missing (NB: this is the soldier shown at the beginning of the episode).
Against the will of her family, Toni wants to go her own way. Children, kitchen, church and working as a saleswoman in Hartmut's television shop are not enough for her. Completely incomprehensible for sister Ingrid, who is overjoyed as a temp in Hartmut's shop. Surprisingly, Gerd supports his eldest daughter and gets her a job as a foreign language secretary for his old companion Reinhard Gehlen (Martin Wuttke). Shortly afterwards she meets Otto John again in the lobby of the Ministry of the Interior office. For him, Toni could be the key to getting explosive information from the innermost circle around Gehlen. John puts his best agent on her: Wolfgang.

“Bonn - alte Freunde, neue Feinde” - Episode 5 & 6
Synopsis:
Otto John gives Toni the task of finding out who supports "Scipio" financially. She finds what she is looking for in her father's office and comes across dubious payments. When trucks are loaded with the mysterious boxes in the yard, Toni lays in wait. In an unobserved moment, she jumps onto the loading ramp. But where does the journey lead?
Otto John wants to get down to business to arrest Alois Brunner at a train station. But contrary to the information in the “Heimann list”, he is not on the train. Did someone warn the criminal? At the weekly meeting at the Ministry of the Interior, John is scorned and ridiculed for his failure.
John makes his way to Antwerp to meet with the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and learns that the data on the "Heimann List" has been deliberately falsified. Who was the client? In Bonn, John presents his investigations into "Scipio" and Schröder gives the green light for a large-scale operation - John's last chance to save his own career.
At the "Day of the Resistance" celebrations, John hopes to triumph in front of the federal government with newfound information about Gehlen and his group. He has all the trumps in his hand, but will he be believed?
Toni's life has been turned upside down. After she confronts her family with the cruel truth and nobody believes her, she leaves with a few belongings and moves in with Wolfgang. The two realize how strong their feelings are for each other, even when everything is crumbling around them. But in the middle of the night Wolfgang packs up his things and drives to Bavaria, where he wants to meet Alois Brunner. The two have more in common than Wolfgang would ever reveal. He would even jeopardize his love for Toni for this.
In order to prevent Brunner from escaping, Wolfgang overpowers a driver who is supposed to take the war criminal across the border. But Brunner recognizes Wolfgang and torments Wolfgang with the horrible truth of his life, they struggle and a shot is fired.
Otto John is desperate, no one listens to him. His fight seems lost. Finally, his wife Lucie encourages him to attend a meeting in East Berlin to report what he knows about "Scipio". John gets into a car and makes his way to the Brandenburg Gate. Will he ever return to Bonn?

Max plays Wolfgang Berns in “Bonn - alte Freunde, neue Feinde”
Wolfgang Berns works as an agent in the Federal Office of the Protection of the Constitution. He reports directly to the President of the Office, Otto John, and is used by him for undercover investigations. Wolfgang's work defines him as a person; it is all he has. So what he doesn't have: a private life, friends, family.
The hunt for criminals from the Nazi era is his whole purpose in life - above all he is looking for one man in particular with almost morbid intensity: the former SS Hauptsturmfuhrer Alois Brunner. The man in his mid-thirties may appear to be a charming, confident and sophisticated man on the outside; but inside, he is broken. The loyal agent, who reliably stands by his boss and closest confidante Otto John, is able to hide his trauma. But nobody knows if he would put his own agenda ahead of job duty at the decisive moment. Maybe not even himself.
At first, Toni is just a means to an end for Wolfgang. But then the two fall in love with each other - and Wolfgang endangers not only her, but also his own mission.

What Max says about his character:
The character Wolfgang Berns is an agent of the protection of the constitution and a purely fictional character. Like many Germans at the time, he had a dark past that he hoped to overcome by working as a "Nazi hunter". However, he also pursues his private interests at the same time and it is difficult to assess which side he is actually on. He is a very torn person, traumatized by the war, who is out for revenge but still wants to serve the right side. So it was very appealing to play this character.
