Day 03: Concept Changes
✧ Yesterday’s artefact idea: Transcribed graphics to be sketched onto tracing paper, using different shades of blue to represent emotions. ✧ Today’s updated artefact idea: We sat with Andreas and consulted the plan that we’ve decided on Tuesday. However, the execution that we wanted was too basic and literal (I think I could at least agree on that) so, we were “challenged” to improve on it and that maybe we could try to come up with a 3D object.

Edmund sketching out the music score, as said in our initial idea.
I am well aware that we only have ourselves about three to four days to get this project complete but I am constantly torn between wanting to do something nice simple, so that it would be easy for everyone, and doing something that is challenging but worth it at the end of the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After further discussions with Andreas, I took on the role of editing the audio files and combining them into a single track while Nikki, Amber and Edmund think of a way to come up with a 3D artefact ⏤ in relation to what our concept is all about.
Since Amber is an Interior Design student, she gave us a few ideas on how our concept could flow nicely with a certain structure and here are the pictures that inspired us to visualise our path.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The flow and curves of this structure might just be the key to represent the main visualisation of our concept ⏤ which is to interpret the colour blue through its emotions and feelings.
We collected around a total of seven different audio recordings in total, branching out from different parts of Singapore. There were one or two audio files that couldn’t be used as they didn’t fit the theme quite right. So what I did was to layer the different audio carefully, in a way that creates some sort of melody. Here is what we have come up with so far.

P.S: Low-key hoping we could finalise this piece of tragic but decent masterpiece by tomorrow!

Feb 25 - 9 AM
At the briefing while listening to Jenny Balfour Paul.
I learnt about the historical importance of the color blue.
She spoke about the history, cultural meaning, and aesthetic importance behind the colour “Blue” and “Indigo” and their impact on societies worldwide. Afterwards, we were divided into groups where we proceeded to discuss the objectives of this project. We were encouraged to think outside the box and broaden the horizons of interdisciplinary practice.

Interdisciplinary Project Day 4
Day 4 was a short day with the others as we were all working on each aspect of the final outcome individually. Cynthia has given me the video she did up for me to work with for the sounds. We all met up and went through together what we are gonna present for the presentation based on the slides Edeline has made.
Tumblr media
I then proceeded to work on adding the recorded ambient sounds of the various locations and arranged them according to the video. I did a final edit of the video to touch up and make sure the transitions look fine.
Tumblr media
Using Final Cut Pro X to edit Videos.
Tumblr media
Using Ableton Live 10 to do the sound-related work for the video using the recorded sounds and sound FX.
After a substantial amount of time editing and arranging of audio, the final product which is the video is realized.
youtube
The Final Product.
I am happy with how decent it turned out. It may not have turned out exactly as planned but we make do with what we have and this project so far has made me tap into other fields of expertise such as Photography and Video-related work which is not my main discipline. This has been an enriching experience to be able to use other skills learnt elsewhere in a school context. All that is left to complete is the presentation tomorrow and the admin work that needs to be submitted.

Day 1
Today was the first day of interdisciplinary project and I, as with others, did not know what to expect.
Met my group members; Alicia (animation), Fai (fine arts) and Grace (design comm) in class and we were given a short activity to do where we had a set of rules to follow and to create something out of it.
This is what we came up with in the short period of time
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were then tasks with another activity to come up with our own set of rules and to generate an outcome. We did not really understand what we were suppose to do and did not realise that it relates to the previous activity.
The comments we got from the lecturer was that we did not really do what the task was given so we’ll find out more tomorrow!

D A Y O N E — 25th Feb (IP)
INDIGO: from colour to culture
9 - 11am | INDIGO by Prof. Jenny Balfour-Paul
The word ‘interdisplinary’ hinted at the idea of working with students from other disciplines on campus but I truthfully had no idea what to expect content-wise. The first morning context briefing on INDIGO by Prof. Jenny Balfour-Paul was a little dry but it was interesting to see how her research on INDIGO had several overlaps within history and culture. I personally never thought of the colour, Indigo, holding much meaning other than its visual traits so it was an eye opener on how colours held much meaning in various cultures all over the world.
Discovering the duality in meanings behind colours made me think about the things we interact with in our everyday lives that could possibly mean of sentimental, historic or cultural value to a person or a community of people. However, the idea and routine of seeing the things around us constantly bring about normalcy—so much that we end up losing the ability to appreciate something and realize its value.

Presentation
Concept: Individual spaces on a spectrum of blue
We had conflicting opinions on whether blue was a positive or negative emotion, but we could all agree that it evoked a reaction out of us. So to accommodate our respective individualisms, the group decided to allocate our spaces in the form of boxes. With our individual spaces, we had the liberty to express whatever we liked that would represent our items and our personalities.
Tumblr media
Our various disciplines were also represented in each of our boxes:
Li Yuan’s (Animation) box was highly illustrative, depicting the comfort of home and her memories surrounding it. Her favourite animal, the cat is also nestled away, and her original item, the egg tray can be seen in the overall colour combination and shape.
My box showed how colourful music can be, and the wires represent how everything is connected to the other. The earphones wrapped around the batteries serve as a reminder that ordinary things are given meaning through their function and therefore shouldn’t be overlooked.
Claire’s (Interior Design) box showed how she instantly saw the spatial design and the possibilities she could create in it. She used plastic as one of her materials because that was what she brought on Monday. The neutrality of plastic can be seen in the simple maze she designed; how easily a product can be good and bad at the same time.
Aisyah’s (Product Design) box displayed her use of various methods and crafts employed - paper marbling, use of wires. Her impression of blue as a moody and sad feeling is evident.
Li Yi’s (Fashion Design and Media) box looked dark, fragmented, and design-wise rather two dimensional. However, when she shined her torchlight on it, the fragments reflected the light and the entire feel of her creation changed. Her playing on perception, literally seeing things in a different light, created much content for discussion.
We concluded our presentation with having shown the various ways blue affects us, it is really up to the perceiver to make their own decisions as each individual will have their own views but to remember that each can learn from the other.

Audio
Feb 28 - 2PM
As a part of the research I was doing into conveying blue through sound I found a website that transforms image data into Audio.
https://ojack.github.io/PIXELSYNTH/ I was able to make this Sound Clip by the images we picked for our mood board.
Analysis and Research -
In the process of finding ways to convey the color blue in other formats other than the visual, I came across the process turning raw image data into audio. My Analysis is that this method could be used effectively to convey the despondence and sterile emotion that the color blue seems to convey even when converted to Audio.
Self Reflection -
While reflecting on myself I realized that with enough perseverance I could find a way to convey the color blue through sound.

Interdisciplinary Project Day 3
We met up with all the photos and data we collected on Tuesday to collate and start working on our final product and presentation slides. We managed to all have a variety of wonderful photos taken at our respective locations throughout Singapore.
Some photos taken by my groupmates at their locations:
Tumblr media
@ Orchard Road
Tumblr media
@ Choa Chu Kang North 6
Tumblr media
@ Loyang Tua Pek Kong
With these photos, it was interesting to see the different textures and patterns of the ground that everyone took around their location as it is something that I personally do not notice all this time.
Using these photos, we plan to do a Photo-Montage which is continuous with each pair comprising of a photo of the feet on the ground and the matching Sky above. Each location will have a cycle of photos specific to that location and using the ambient recordings that each of us took at our locations, I will insert it as ambience and foley for the video so that the viewer is able to see and hear how a place sounds like without being there which in relation to our concept is to see the world or environment with a more in-depth perspective such as the “Blue” vs “Indigo” and other shades of Blue.
We decided to use Google Earth to create our transitions from place to place so that it isn’t all just the photo-slideshow.
An Example of a transition:
youtube
We split the work towards the final product equally with each person doing Video Editing, Powerpoint Slides, Organisation of Material and Audio Editing.
Tumblr media
Me working on the transitions.
Tumblr media
Edeline doing up our Powerpoint Slides.
Tumblr media
Cynthia doing the editing and Video.
I am thankful to have such cooperative group mates to work with as each of them brought something to the final outcome in progress and were able to do their tasks well. We ended the day with our photos labeled and for Cynthia to bring home and edit for the video.

Interdisciplinary Project Day 2
Data collection day is here! Picking up on where we left off from yesterday. My group and I met up to have a short discussion and confirmation of the locations we were to explore and take the photos of our feet and sky at our locations.
Tumblr media
I made my way down to Paya Ubi Industrial Park and began my journey through the area. Just as Gilles suggested, I let my heart take me wherever I felt like heading towards. Be it a manufacturing building or the ComfortDelgro Driving Centre to Car Dealerships. It was an interesting new perspective to look at the place as I would only go there usually for work as an AV Engineer at Audio-VIsual Rental companies located in Ubi,
This is an example of the type of photos we are taking:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As seen in the photos, there’s a photo of my feet touching a ground or a texture I find interesting and sky above me, be it blocked by buildings etc.
It took a little bit of walking around and exploring to find interesting textures on the ground and I discovered places I’d never thought to exist in an industrial area such as a Funeral Parlor, Driving Centre etc. It was nice to also see a lot of Jet Fighter Planes fly by.
As we were also doing the same process in familiar places around our housing estate, I proceeded to head on home to my area of Admiralty after I was done walking around Ubi for a few hours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some photos taken at my area.
Taking these kind of photos made me look at these familiar and unfamiliar places in a very different way as I was searching for different textures on the ground and actually taking a look at the sky; So clear and lovely that I never took the time to actually notice if not for this project.

DAY 3 (Entry - 2)  Wednesday, February 27th 2019
TRIAL 2
Drawing in the dark with eyes closed while listening to songs. This, we believe will change their perception of their ‘blue’ memories.
Objective: To use the audio and trigger certain emotions and memories we have of “blue”
Test ‘2′:
We closed our eyes while the audio is being played to ensure that we are focused on our thoughts and not distracted by our surrounding
No prompts (questions) were given. Just the music was being played.
We could not lift up our pens while we were drawing
Conclusion (not very effective)
Cannot relate to the song, therefore end up just drawing according to the song’s tempo, rhythm
Did not trigger any emotion/memories
Improvements for Test ‘2′
There were questions that prompted us to think of a certain memory that is related  to blue
The audio was changed to something more generic (noise)
Pen can be lifted up when drawing

DAY 2 (Entry - 2) Tuesday, February 26th 2019
We narrowed down our ideas from the paper we made the day before and we discussed about what we’re gonna do for our project.
SO! To made everything clear for us and understandable for our lecturer (Chris from Interior Design), we pointed out our ‘WHAT/WHO/WHERE/WHEN/WHY/HOW’
WHAT
• Experience blue through emotions & memories
WHEN
• Last day of IP! (Friday)
WHERE
• Tentative
WHO
• Public! We want basically anyone, any age, any race, any gender!
WHY
• We are doing this because we want to perceive different variations of people’s perception about blue
HOW
So it’s going to be two rounds
• 1st — we will ask those who come, to paint about their perception about blue with the provided blue pallete. Their drawings could be anything. Eg; when i think of blue, i think of sadness and loneliness (emotion), therefore i’m gonna paint something minimalist (lonely) stuff on the canvas with dark blue paint (sadness, dark).
• 2nd — we will ask them to paint again, but this time round they will be painting with eyes closed (blindfolded) while listening to a piece (audio). Therefore, the audio will change their thoughts about blue because what they listened, we believe can bring back certain memories.
All those paintings at the end will be collaged together, and that will be our artwork.
