(via Philadelphia's Bethlehem & Sad Patrick Make Music About Love, Struggle, Healing 03/10 by Voices For Racial Healing | Music Podcasts)
Join me as I chat with and play some songs by Bethlehem and Sad Patrick, members of the Philadelphia-based musical duo Be Sad Music.  We'll talk about their 5+ year collaboration and themes of love, struggle and healing in their music.
Bethlehem, a singer, songwriter and self-described "vocussionist," was described as “Germantown’s next rising star” by WHYY/NewsWorks Philadelphia after the release of her first solo album, “Bigger Than Music”. Sad Patrick, a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, was kicked out of the Calliope School of Folk Music when he started using “jazz” chords. The duo, and their songs about love, love lost, and love that is better off lost, have won audiences over at notable performances at genre-spanning events throughout Philadelphia and beyond.
“The local duo blends the focused minimalism and poetic lyrics of folk tradition with simmering, freewheeling jazz and blues — slick guitars, soaring vocals, nuanced melodies.” - John Vettese, WXPN The Key and Key Studio Sessions
“Bethlehem brings raw, unapologetic gospel energy to Sad Patrick’s songs. – Homer Jackson, Philadelphia Jazz Project

Performances by
Randie O'Neil - Americana / Folk - Pop
Smooth and charming, Randie puts her whole self into her writing and performances, using honest and witty lyrics about heartache and strength, paired with catchy melodies. Randie’s storytelling comes from a sincere place; through her songs, she conveys a message of understanding and courage to face problems that almost all of us experience at some point in our lives. Adding depth and soul to the songs is multi-instrumentalist John Hone. randieoneil.com/ youtube.com/channel/UCsFNzOKs_KSUU2eE8ZYi_WQ
Bethlehem and Sad Patrick - Vocussion Meets Folk / Jazz Guitar
Bethlehem and Sad Patrick perform songs of love and other struggles. Combining her soaring vocals and driving percussion with his sparse guitar, they deliver powerful songs about being in and out of love, keeping your head in the city, struggling to make your way, and seeking peace on the margins. Sad Patrick’s playing supports Bethlehem’s powerful singing, remarkable improvisations, and nuanced melodies, atop her tarima stomps and body percussion. Their live shows are enthralling. besadmusic.com/
Roia Rafieyan - Singer - Songwriter
Roia is happy to be back to playing guitar after a lengthy period of recuperation from surgery on both her hands. She has had the privilege of playing and singing with some fantastic musicians over the years, and one of her biggest triumphs is having had a song written (and sung) about her by Cafe Improv’s very own Thomas P and his performing partner Doug!
Spook Handy - American Folk Musician
Spook’s credits include performing alongside Pete Seeger more than fifty times in the last ten years of Pete’s life; performing over 3,000 concerts throughout North America; being named “Best Folk Artist” by multiple publications; and charting as high as No. 2 on the International Folk Radio Charts. Seeger’s influence shines bright and clear in Spook’s performance, and the many new songs he has written during the pandemic lockdown. spookhandy.com, facebook.com/spookhandy, twitter.com/spookhandy. PHL / Melinda Steffy: Ruination Day
Tumblr media
Melinda Steffy: Ruination Day repetition, nuance, & catastrophe March 14 – April 27, 2019 RECEPTIONS: Thursday, March 14, 6-9pm Thursday, April 11, 6-9pm ARTIST TALK & PERFORMANCE featuring Bethlehem & Sad Patrick Sunday, April 14, 3pm
[Images]
Ruination Day is approaching
Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia is pleased to welcome Melinda Steffy Ruination Day. Steffy operates in a complex conceptual space, where music and color and geometric forms and lyrics and story-telling and history all intersect. Melinda Steffy was Invited to the gallery by TSA Philly member Terri Saulin.
ABOUT RUINATION DAY
April 14: Lincoln was shot. The Titanic hit the iceberg. The Black Sunday dust storm devastated the Midwest. Three major events in American history occurred on the same date, and each are documented in folk and blues songs. Melinda Steffy’s “Ruination Day” series takes four of these songs and re-constructs them as grid-based color patterns. Her geometric abstraction removes the specific contexts of the songs and reveals the architecture of oral history: repetition, nuance, and catastrophe. On Sunday, April 14, 2019, at 3:00pm Melinda will give a reading of her “Ruination Day Manifesto,” joined by duo Bethlehem and Sad Patrick who will perform the four songs: “Booth Killed Lincoln,” a 19th-century folk ballad; “God Moves on the Water” by Blind Willie Johnson; “The Great Dust Storm” by Woody Guthrie; and “Ruination Day, Part II” by Gillian Welch. BIO Philadelphia artist Melinda Steffy re-interprets music as color patterns, exploring ideas of translation, information/data, and how music weaves throughout human experience. In 2017, she was commissioned by Eastern Mennonite University (VA) to create 100 paintings based on a Mennonite hymn in honor of their Centennial, and by Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church (PA) to create a series of works based on Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Melinda’s work was selected for Tiger Strikes Asteroid NY’s 2017-2018 Flat File program, and her artwork has been exhibited at Crane Arts (Philadelphia), The Art Gallery at City Hall (Philadelphia), 20*20 House (PA), Rowan University (NJ), and the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival (VA), among many others. She is an artist member of InLiquid and a LEADERSHIP Philadelphia fellow, and she was a prize-winner in the 29th annual Faber Birren Color Award Show (CT). Also an accomplished musician, she currently serves as executive director for Philadelphia music education nonprofit LiveConnections and sings with the Chestnut Street Singers. Melinda received a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from The University of the Arts and a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Mennonite University.
