Pagmamalaki sa Nakaraan, Pag-asa sa Hinaharap
Salud, Buena Vida-Mabuhay! Welcome to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
3. Lunch at Hotel de Oriente Binondo Hall
Pagkain ba kamo? Tiyak na mabubusog ang bawat isa sa set lunch na inihahain dito. Ito ay kasama sa aming binayaran dito at sulit na sulit sapagkat mayroon pa itong kasamang panghimagas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Bataan’s Best
Where to eat
Loleng’s Hu Tieu-an Morong, Bataan Coming from Manila, the nearest municipality is Morong. This makes Loleng’s Hu Tieu-an a perfect place for a simple breakfast. Loleng used to work at the Philippine Refugee Processing Center, where she learned to cook Vietnamese dishes like hu tieu (savory noodle soup) and banh mi (traditional Vietnamese sandwich with meat and fresh basil). Her carinderia sells them at affordable prices, too! The special hu tieu with Vietnamese-style rice noodles costs just P50, while the hu tieu with the plain mami noodles costs P35. Read more about Loleng’s Hu Tieu-an. Romalaine Seafood Restaurant and Leisure Park Mariveles, Bataan Romalaine’s sign may be battered and fading, but it’s still a good place for a simple meal. Price range here is P150 to P300, and the house favorites are seafood pansit, seafood kare-kare, inihaw na pusit, and ginataang kuhol.
averde Coffee Shop Abucay, Bataan If you ask us, Saverde takes inspiration from Japanese fast food. Their beef tapa rice (P75) has the rice wrapped in an omelette, similar to the Japanese dish called “omurice.” They also have thick slices of rich buttermilk toast (P25) similar to those in Japanese dessert cafes. For a Mexican twist, try their taco pizza (P120). Geno’s Ice Cream Orani, Bataan This small ice cream store looks average from the outside, but we were in for a surprise! Their bestseller is gabi (taro) ice cream. Get yourself a cup for P20. What to see
Dambana ng Kagitingan Mount Samat, Pilar, Bataan Bataan was one of the last areas to surrender to the Japanese forces during World War 2. Filipino, American and Filipino-Chinese soldiers held out in the mountains of Bataan for three months before giving in. By the time they surrendered and were subjected to the brutal Death March, many of the soldiers were already sick and starving. Their bravery is remembered by the Filipino people at the Dambana ng Kagitingan, a 30-storey cross atop Mount Samat. An elevator ride to the top gives visitors a dizzying, birds-eye view of the area. Entrance fee is P20. Zero KM Death March Marker Bagac, Bataan The starting point of the Bataan Death March is commemorated by this small memorial. Visit it to take a quick photo and to pay your respects. This is walking distance from the Japan-Philippines Friendship Tower, which symbolizes peace and forgiveness between the two nations. Zero KM Death March Marker Mariveles, Bataan There’s a second marker? During the Death March, soldiers were split into two groups, which is how the march started at two places at one.
Philippine Refugee Processing Center (also known as Vietnamese Village or PRPC) Morong, Bataan The PRPC was the last stop for over 400,000 refugees before being repatriated to Western countries. They came in boats rescued at the shores of Bataan, and the processing center was where they learned English, attended school, lived and received medical treatment. These days, the village has a small museum about the refugees, and is mostly rented out to companies for out-of-town seminars and conferences.
Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar Bagac, Bataan Take a short bangka ride to this heritage village. Think wide, cobblestone streets, Spanish-era houses, horse-drawn carriages and more. Each house here was purchased from a different part of the Philippines, disassembled and painstakingly rebuilt piece by piece. You’ve got houses from Tondo, Binondo and Bulacan. One of the grandest houses here has a marble floor, a painted ceiling, a wide wooden staircase, bedrooms with four-poster beds, lattice woodwork and antique wooden furniture everywhere you look. Period drama fans will love to rent this house for P15,750 to P45,000 a night.
If you love the town’s sights but don’t need to stay in the fancy houses, the island also has simpler cottages that you can rent for P3,800 to P4,500 a night. There are also bicycle rental shops and restaurants for your convenience. Plaza Mayor de Balanga Balanga, Bataan Drop by the city square for the nightly light show! What to do
Mount Samat Treetop Adventure Just one kilometer from the Dambana ng Kagitingan is the jump-off point for a zipline down the mountain. Drew’s tip: Come here at 5:00 PM for an epic sunset view. The 540-meter-long ride lasts for 40 to 45 seconds and costs P425. The small park includes the Dunsulan Waterfalls, which is too dangerous to swim in, but is worth a photo op. Balanga Wetland and Nature Park Balanga, Bataan Rent a bike, go kayaking, boating, bird-watching, and rent a bamboo raft to enjoy a meal in the water! The “Biyahe ni Drew” crew was treated to steamed crabs, prawns and even stingray. That, plus some green mangoes and bagoong, and we’re good to go.
Where to stay
Vista Venice Resort Morong, Bataan Their deluxe room, which costs P4,500 a night, is good for four people and comes with two king-sized beds. The private bathroom comes with a hot and cold shower. There are also cottages for larger groups; rates range from P3,000 to P12,000.
The food here is good, too. We ordered the lemon chicken topped with cashews, crispy pata and cashew milkshakes. The cashew shake is made with the soft part of the cashew fruit, and is a bit of an acquired taste: Drew didn’t enjoy it that much, but some of our crew finished two glasses! The taste is a mix of durian and guyabano, if you ask us. Vista Venice also has swimming pools and several kinds of spas: a regular spa that offers massages, a fish spa for the feet (P150) and a full-body volcanic sand spa (P750).
Bataan White Corals Beach Resort and Hotel Morong, Bataan If you want to spend some quality time at the beach, this resort is your best bet. Wide coast? Check. Powdery white sand? Check. Affordable accommodations? Check! Room rates for two range from P3,000 to P4,000 a night. Nolette’s Inn Pilar, Bataan At Nolette’s, you can get a room for two at just P1,500. But since this is an inn and not a hotel, you won’t get a beach or pool. Think of it as a place to crash after a day out. What to buy for pasalubong Cashews Bataan is rich in this healthy nut. Get a pack of roasted cashews or try cashew polvoron at the Bataan Tourism Office in Balanga, Bataan. It’s a one-stop-shop for all your pasalubong needs, featuring products from all over Bataan.

Want to Escape the City? Visit this historical place and got enchant with some amazing stories behind these amazing houses.
The lovely town of Bagac, Bataan, may not be as popular as the heritage cities of Taal, Silay, and Vigan, but in a vast stretch of the town’s coast lies a development that easily combines the best of the three and so much more. Las Casas De Filipinas De Acuzar Heritage Resort is a sprawling complex that features 27 Spanish-era heritage houses known as bahay na bato.
These houses are not indigenous to Bagac but were transported brick-by-brick and plank-by-plank from different parts of Luzon to this resort. How they were able to do this daunting task is as impressive as the careful restoration from their dilapidated state to their current pristine look. Casa Bizantina, for example, was originally built in 1890 in Binondo, Manila. A century later, it became a forsaken structure occupied by informal settlers. In 2009, it was dismantled and transferred to Las Casas and was refurbished into a luxury accommodation.
If you think that you’re just going to waste a day looking at stone houses, you are very much mistaken. Prepare for a multi-sensory nostalgia and fun-filled trip once you enter the resort gates.

Memories With Strangers (The Luna Sea Experience)
This is a guest post from one of your fellow travelers, AK Castillo. She joined us in the recently concluded Luna Sea 3. Read on as AK tells her story of trust, friendship, staying up all night drinking and having conversations with strangers turned into friends.
***
For the past months, we’ve been dying to have that chance again to go to an out of town location very, very far away from the everyday busy noise of the metro. That’s why when our colleague, Alfie, asked us to join their road trip this May, we immediately nodded. But when we asked where the location is, hesitation slowly creeped through my mind. Usually, you had to plan for out of town trips, right? The catch for this trip though was you have absolutely no idea where you will be going. Good luck on planning for that. But the theme was really intriguing. Luna Sea. Moon by the sea. And the perks were even enticing. I mean, unlimited drinks? Actually, you got me with just that. So, I thought, why not? There’s a first for everything. When the day came, we met with our Travel Manager, Danes, at Centris. Right then, he made us sign a waiver. My mind suddenly envisioned myself coming back from this trip without any internal organs left. After everything was set and we’re ready to go, we braced ourselves on the thought that we’ll be having Vitamin Sea under the sunset soon. Not. Eons of hours later (Our expected 4-5 hour travel time extended to a 6-7 hour one) filled with landscapes of nature and cows and Danes trying his best to still keep mum about the location despite having to resort to Waze because we had to do a detour from the traffic caused by an accident and, worse, we got lost, we finally caught a glimpse of the sea. It was so near yet still so far! We stopped over for a moment as we saw the Road Trippers along the way. I was too tired from the length of the ride when I hopped down for a smoke, but I was met with the most overwhelming yells of welcoming greeting from the other Travel Managers that I forgot I was even tired in the first place. Armed with newfound strength to carry on (well, as if we had a choice of turning back at this point), we trudged on the dirt path until lo and behold, the sign with Luna Sea! We even saw lanterns scattered like fireflies on the whole venue. By that time, it was already evening. Again, we were greeted enthusiastically by the Travel Managers. We were told that we can use one of the five tents present to sleep in. AJ also gave us glow sticks and Luna Sea shirts that we can cut and style however way we want. The amazing thing though was he was able to memorize all of our names in one go. We were given time to freshen up, but we opted to take a look at the sea first. As we were quite an asocial bunch, we decided to lay down our blankets between the sea and the stage. We didn’t participate much on the events happening on stage, save for the cheers we yelled for the people we are acquainted with (just imagine our surprise when we found out that the fire dancers were our travel buddies all along). Dinner was an amazing feast of curachas, shrimp, chicken, and buko juice. Then, the mixed drinks were passed around, just in time for the first set of the acoustic band, Pusakalye. Their songs were like lullabies to broken souls. And right then, I realized, there it was: the moon was glowing softly. The scene unfolding before me was a fleeting moment of beauty: Everyone blurred in a drunken haze of sand, lights, and laughter. As I said, we were quite an asocial bunch. But kudos to the Travel Managers who kept the drinks flowing and made sure we were comfortable and having a good time. Danes even stayed with us for a long time to chat. He was such a funny and caring fellow! I say, if you see Danes as the Travel Manager on one of Experience Philippines’ roadtrips, book it immediately. Also, one Travel Manager, Jayvee, who was just supposed to give another round of drinks, even ended up playing Tong Its with us. Then, as midnight passed and majority of the people were already wasted, Jayvee went back to recruit us for another round of shots. He got us with a promise of cigarettes, but even when we ran out of them, even if there were no “chasers” at first, even if Alfie promised us he will get us so drunk but ended up doing yoga poses while asleep, even if I was in a circle of drunk people I don’t even know personally, I never felt out of place at all. It was as if I was with long-time friends I finally met again - for the first time. The next day, sadly The Party Only people have to leave in the morning (editor's note: For Luna Sea 3, you could choose between Full Road Trip or Party Only). After a good dose of sinigang, which is an amazing medicine for hangovers, we packed our bags and were ready to go, but the Travel Managers were not finished surprising me just yet. They gave us a heartwarming send-off that made me feel they want to see us again, despite the limited time we were together, despite us being complete strangers the day before. You see, trust is very hard to give, most especially to strangers. We were hardwired since childhood that strangers equal to absolute danger. But for these “strangers”, I’m glad I made an exception.
Thanks, AK, for joining Luna Sea 3! It sure was a lot of work for all of us Travel Managers, but we couldn't think of a better reward than hearing stories like these from our Road Trippers! Hope to see you on our future trips!
