HISTORY OF PALANI MURUGAN TEMPLE AND LIST OF FESTIVALS OF PALANI TEMPLE

Palani Murugan temple, Dindigul, is around 100 kilometres southeast of Coimbatore and northwest of Madurai.   It is located in the foot-hills of the Palani hills.The temple is associated with Lord Muruga  who was located at Palani after he had been outsmarted through his brother Ganesa in a contest for going who worldwide first.

Lord Shiva expressed his intention of dividing the fruit between his two sons, Ganesha and Murugan, and the sage recommended against cutting it.   He determined to award the fruit to one who first circle the world thrice.   Accepting the challenge, Lord Karthikeya began his trip worldwide on his mount peacock.   Nevertheless, Ganesha, who surmised that the world was not more than his parents Shiva and Shakti combined, circumambulated them.   Cheerful with their son’s discernment, Lord Shiva awarded the fruit to Lord Ganesha.

Karthikeya felt the need to get matured from boyhood and for that reason chose to remain as a hermit and discarded all his robes and ornaments.   He went into meditation to know about himself and selected the place Palani.  The idol of the Lord Muruga in Palani, was created and consecrated by sage Bogar, one in every of Hinduism’s eighteen great siddhas.  The idol of the deity is made from an amalgam of 9 poisonous materials which varieties an eternal remedy, represents the god Subrahmanya in the kind He assumed at Palani

ten-day festival is carried out at Arulmigu Lakshminarayana perumal temple.   At the Periyanayakiamman Temple also, Lord Muthukumara Swamy, together with Valli and Deivanai, rides within the silver car along the streets across the Temple.

Agni Nakshatram:

For the duration of the final 7 days of Chitrai and the first 7 days of the next month(i.  E.  Vaikasi) the devotees of Lord Muruga go across the Hill by foot, early in the mornings.   It is considered holy to worship the Hill temple from afar or from near or around it

Vaikaasi Festival:

Celebrated for ten days.   On the Perianayaki amman temple, it’s celebrated for 10 days with procession daily.   There’s car procession on the 10th day i.  e Visakam.   Visakam is Lord Muruga’s birthday star.   This is celebrated at all Murugan Temples.

Aani-Annabhishekam

In the course of the Tamil month of Aani ((3rd month of the Tamil year) Annabhishekam is performed at Thiruvavinankudi Temple, Hill Temple, Periyanayagi Amman temple and Periyavudaiyar Temple.

Kandhar Shasti:

During the 6 days in the month of Aippasi (7th Tamil month).   This is headquartered on the mythological story of Lord Muruga Killing the demons.   On this day only the Lord comes down the Hill, and after vanquishing the demons, ascends the Hill again.

Thirukkarthigai:

Celebrated for 10 days and every day “Chinna Kumarar” goes in procession in the small golden car.   On Karthigai day, he goes in the Golden car.   On the tenth day, woman devotee’s light lamps and worship Murugan.

Markazhi Pooja:

During Tamil month of Markazhi ((9th month) the Hill Temple opens at 4 am and recital of Thiruvembavai is done.   The early morning Pooja is done in all the foremost Temples in Palani.   The recital of Thiruppavai is done at Perumal temple.

HOW TO REACH AMARAVATHI DAM FROM PALANI HILLS? FIND BETTER ROUTE TO REACH AMARAVATHI DAM

Amaravathi Dam at Amaravathinagar is located in the picturesque Indira Gandhi flora and fauna Sanctuary in Tiruppur district, Tamil Nadu, India. The 9.31 km², 33.53 m Amaravathi Reservoir is an offshoot of this steep dam. Amaravathi dam was built in 1957 across the Amaravathi River about 25 km upstream and south from Thirumoorthy Dam. The dam is erected to a top of 90 toes.

It was built particularly for the irrigation and flood management of these regions. Now, the Dam generates four megawatts of electric power at an average. There’s a good laid-out park where one could climb steep steps on the dam to have a picturesque view north of the plains under and south to the Anaimalai Hills and Palani Hills above.

The distance between Amaravathi Dam to Palani to Hill is 41 km, and Journey time is approximately one hour, without a lot trouble. The experience can be made more enjoyable if one opts for stop over for food or relaxation. The distance and journey time would change as per site visitors and avenue conditions. It’s a 1 hour drive where you would have to take via Kolumam Road and Kallapuram Road. To reach Amaravath Dam, take Thiruvalluvar, and then St, Red Cross Rd which then leads to Subramania Puram Rd.followed by Palani-Alangium-Dharapuram Rd in Indra Nagar.

This place is popular for fishing as well. The non-indigenous tilapia fish was once presented here and this reservoir was known for best fish yield within the state. Tilapia is the most popular fish caught from this the reservoir. Solid nets are generally used for subsistence fishing. Normally, one fisherman can catch over 20 kg/day of fish from here. The Fisheries department estimates a yield of one hundred ten tonnes per year of fishes from this reservoir. Fisheries department shaped the Amaravathi Nagar Tribal Fishermen Cooperative Society to give tribals fishing rights in the Amaravathi Reservoir. In 2007, around 50 tribals from the Karattupathi settlement, close to the reservoir, enrolled as contributors of the society and eight of them have obtained a fishing license. Another attraction is the crocodiles present in the reservoir. The largest wild breeding population of crocodiles in South India is found in the reservoir, and within the Chinnar, Thennar, and Pambar rivers that drain into it. These wide-snouted mugger crocodiles, often referred to as marsh crocodiles and Persian crocodiles are probably the most original and preferred of the three species of crocodiles determined in India. The Amaravathi Sagar Crocodile Farm, placed in 1976, is one among the popular crocodile nurseries in India. Crocodiles of all sizes are basking under sunlight and all of the sudden making a stride or piled up on one another is an interesting sightseeing of this palce. There are around 98 crocodiles (25 male + 73 female) present as per the recent count taken.

HOW TO REACH KUTHIRAIYAR FALLS FROM PALANI HILLS?

Kuthiraiyar Falls is located in the Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu.  It is part of the hill station city of Palani.  The months – October to March are considered as the best time to visit Kuthiraiyar Falls.  Kuthiraiyar Falls is accessible from Pappampatti, and the famous hill station of Kodaikanal is at a distance of 65 kilometers from the cascade.

THE INDIRA GANDHI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY AND NATIONAL PARK – NEXT ROAD TRIP FROM PALANI HILLS

The Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park is a well preserved sanctuary in Tamil Nadu that lies in the Western Ghats – south of the Palghat gap, better known as Anaimalais.

Major reservoirs like Parambikulam, Aliyar, Thirumurthi, Upper Aliyar, Kadambarai, Sholayar and Amaravathi are fed by the perennial rivers which originate from the Sanctuary.

There are over 300 species of birds are sighted in this Wildlife Sanctuary.  This Wildlife Sanctuary  is known as a birders’ paradise.  Apart from the great pied hornbill-the flagship species, rare birds like the Frogmouth, Red-winged crested cuckoo are found here.  Birds of prey like Crested Serpent Eagle, Spot-Billied Eagle, Black Eagle, Crested Gohawk, Rufous Bellied Eagle, Jerdon’s Baza, Mountain Hawk Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, and Owl are common in this place.  Many species of Flycatchers, Drongos, Treepies, and Birds of prey, Thrushes, Warblers, Babblers, Woodpeckers, Parakeets, Pigeons, Shrikes, Cuckoos, Swifts and Owls are also found here.

The Sanctuary is highly diverse in its topography, altitude, rainfall, climate and temperature.  Therefore, it naturally supports wide variety of plants and wildlife including several rare, endemic and endangered species of plants and animals.  Diversity of landscape and its components enchants one and all alike be he a tourist, a trekker, an anthropologist, a wild lifer or a naturalist.

Moderate warm climate almost through the year makes it attractive destination throughout the year but the best time to visit would be December to April.

Elephant Herd

Valparai is one of the highest mid elevation hill resort in the country.  The tea plantations are surrounded by evergreen moist deciduous forest a rich elephant tract and a panther prowl.

Grasshills can be reached conventionally through Pollachi over the Attakatti ghat or from topslip via Vargaliar and Manompally.  The shoals and grass lands which are continuous with the grass lands till konalar hut and a briddle path connects the grass hills of the Eravikulam National Park in Munnar.  Tiger, Panther, Elephant Nilgiri Tahr and many other wildlife are found to be peacefully existing in this area.  The grass hills road ends at konalar, a small mountain stream across which the konalar hut is located.

The Crocodile farm at Amaravathi dam is one of the four major crocodile farms in the country and is a popular destination.  The crocodile farm is also the home of grizzled squirrels with many nests located on trees within the farm.  The forests around are ideal elephant tracts.

Attakatti is about 36 km. on the Pollachi Valparai state highway.  A well maintained trekking shed is available near Attakatti.  The area is an ideal dry deciduous and moist deciduous forest tract and home of wildlife like elephant, tiger, nilgiri tahr, sambar etc.
